Indymedia Bristol Server Seized by Police

United Kingdom, 30.06.2005 22:01

On Monday, June 27th, Indymedia Bristol's server was seized by the police. An Indymedia volunteer was arrested during the raid on suspicion of incitement to criminal damage. He is now on bail. See Indymedia Bristol Statement (28th June 05):

"We are outraged at the actions of the police. They have completely disabled the entire Bristol Indymedia news service. By their actions they have undermined the principle of open publishing and free access to the media, thereby removing people's opportunity to read and report their own news. This situation has serious implications for anyone providing a news service on the Internet. We do not intend to let this stop us from continuing the project."

MAXXAM - Killing Two Birds from One Throne

San Francisco Bay Area, 30.06.2005 19:00

Pacific Lumber may be land-sliding into bankruptcy, but its parent company - the Houston based Maxxam – continues to target endangered habitat for logging. The Marbled Murrelet – a fast-flying seabird - is an “old-growth dependent” species, and a large stand of ancient redwoods where they nest has recently been marked for cut.

The logging plan, called “Bonanza”, is open to public comment until July 8, 2005. Of the 249 acres covered by the plan, 192 acres are occupied stands for the murrelet. The Environmental Protection Information Center is requesting letters opposing the plan be sent to the California Department of Forestry. A sample letter is available.

Since the take-over of PALCO by MAXXAM CEO Charles Hurwitz in 1986, the forest – and the timber industry it supports - has suffered a swift decline. A recent report commissioned by the California Water Resources Control Board found that logging such irreplaceable areas would not deter bankruptcy. “..even if (MAXXAM) cut every tree they own, it may not be enough to pay back its current debts.” Maxxam continues to pursue logging in landslide-prone areas, in habitat for many sensitive, threatened and endangered species including the northern spotted owl, marbled murrelet, and coho and chinook salmon. “Maxxam is driving Pacific Lumber and endangered habitat into bankruptcy,” said a long-time critic of the Texas-based corporation. Advertisement on children's TV stirs up 'terrorism' fears

Portland, 30.06.2005 16:26

So, I use my VCR to do my morning yoga...but when I turn it off, the TV comes on. This morning it was on a morning cartoon show (Sabrina, the teenage witch). Then this commercial comes on showing a little girl sitting at a table eating her breakfast and she looks up and asks her mother if she should go to grandma's house if there is a terrorist attack and she (mom) is not around. Then a voice of authority comes on and big words come across the screen, "Do you have a plan in case of a terrorist attack, talk to your children".

A Critical Review of Morgan Reynolds' 'Why Did the Trade Center Skyscrapers Collapse?'

Portland, 30.06.2005 16:26

The article Why Did the Trade Center Skyscrapers Collapse? published on the libertarian-oriented website, has garnered considerable attention. It makes the case for the controlled demolition of the Twin Towers and Building 7 with much the same eloquence as David Ray Griffin, whom it cites. Its author, Morgan Reynolds, brings unprecedented credentials to the community of skeptics of the official story: He is professor emeritus at Texas A&M University, former director of the Criminal Justice Center at the National Center for Policy Analysis, and former chief economist for the US Labor Department during 2001-2002.

Reynolds provides an excellent summary of evidence for the controlled demolition of the WTC skyscrapers. However, he also devotes about a third of his article to supporting the dubious idea that neither the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, nor the field in Shanksville, PA were the sites of the crashes of the jetliners commandeered on 9/11/01. His article thus weds the thesis of controlled demolition of the skyscrapers with the denial that Flights 11, 175, 77, and 93 crashed where reported. This is unfortunate because it functions to discredit the case for demolition by associating it with ideas that lack scientific merit, are easily debunked, and are inherently offensive to the victims of the attack -- especially the survivors of the passengers and crews of the crashed flights.

30 Years since Pine Ridge Shootout

Santa Cruz, CA, 30.06.2005 15:32

Leonard Peltier is still imprisoned thirty years after the shootout on the Pine Ridge Reservation in which two FBI Agents and an AIM member were shot dead.

On June 26th, 1975, two unmarked cars sped onto the Jumping Bull Ranch on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Two plain clothes FBI agents came onto the land ostensibly to serve a warrant for the theft of a pair of used cowboy boots. During these years, the "Reign of Terror," firebombing, beatings, intimidation, disappearences, and other COINTELPRO tactics were more than commonplace, they were the rule of law.

Download the mp3 to hear more about the case of Leonard Peltier, still caged in Leavenworth Penitentiary as you read these words (1 | 2 | 3 | 4), more than thirty years after the shootout. He's been inside longer than he was ever out.

Produced for Freak Radio Santa Cruz, featuring Ward Churchill, Peltier Attorney Barry Bachrach, John Trudell, and other AIM leaders. (18:25 minutes / 16.9 MB)

The Project: Spring Insurrection

Santa Cruz, CA, 30.06.2005 15:32

The Project Collective strives to document and inspire radical actions that are relevant to local, regional, and global socioeconomic justice. We believe independent media plays a crucial role in facilitating dialogue, organizing mass mobilizations, and encouraging daily acts of resistance.

In our latest issue, titled "Spring Insurrection," we focus on the string of radical actions that hit the UC system during Spring quarter. From those who participated we receive accounts and critiques of the counter-military recruitment action at the career fair, the various strikes (AFSCME and CUE), Tent U (1 | 2), and the disruption of the Regent's Meeting at UCSF (1 | 2 | 3 | 4). In addition are articles on the Bush Administration's policies of torture, Bush's favorite Jesus-loving rapist, an interview with Barrios Unidos founder Daniel Alejandrez, an interview with Mayor Mike Rotkin, and other tidbits to fuel the insurrection!

Government Manipulation of the Legal System to Suppress Dissent

Santa Cruz, CA, 30.06.2005 01:21

From racist attacks targeting Lodi, California’s Muslim community, to attempts to silence and imprison political activists in San Francisco and San Diego, dissent and freedom of speech are under attack. As government repression in general increases, so does the use of the federal grand jury to intimidate, incarcerate and render impotent activists across social movements. In recent years, pressure on the animal rights, environmental justice, anti-war and anarchist movements has increased exponentially. Government officials seem anxious to pin the label “terrorist” on anyone that is effectively campaigning against injustice. At a recent hearing before the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, John E. Lewis, Deputy Assistant Director of the Counterterrorism Division of the FBI, testified that, “Investigating and preventing animal rights extremism and eco-terrorism is one of the FBI’s highest domestic terrorism priorities.”

Activists and people of color are not the only people being persecuted, lawyers are feeling the heat as well. On Febuary 10, 2005, New York civil rights attorney Lynne Stewart was convicted of conspiracy, providing material support to terrorists and defrauding the US government. Yet, Stewart never provided any financial support, weaponry or any other concrete aid for any act of terrorism. No act of terrorism is alleged to have resulted from her actions. Lynne and her supporters argue that all she did was represent her client effectively as a good attorney should.

Ontruiming pakhuis Afrika, de nasleep

Netherlands, 29.06.2005 21:00

Shell vs. People of Rossport. "Mafia threats" from judge. Farmers attempting to stop Shell from laying high-pressure gas pipeline across their land in Rossport, Co. Mayo in the west of Ireland (a development of a type admitted to be without precedent by a minister in the Irish government) have been appearing in court in Dublin today.Reports are coming in from supporters of the defendants that the judge, Micheal O' Seighin (President of the High Court), has taken an extreme activist position on the case and threatened the defendants in a very disturbing manner. Breaking news from the newswire: Latest news from the Shell in Mayo case in court this morning report that things are not looking great for the people of Rossport. The judge, who is also the President of the High Court, at one point appeared to threaten every farmer in Mayo with imprisonment. The case resumes in the High Court in court No. 6 at 11.45am. It is looking more likely that some of the people on trial will be sent to jail although sentencing may be deferred until Friday. All support very, very welcome. UPDATE: All five defendants sent to jail. Further reports will be posted throughout the day. Background on the case was previously reported on here and back online

Indymedia Bristol Server Seized by Police

United Kingdom, 29.06.2005 13:31

On Monday, June 27th, Indymedia Bristol's server was seized by the police. An Indymedia volunteer was also arrested during the raid on suspicion of incitement to criminal damage. Last week, police demanded access to the server to gain the IP details of a posting. The alternative media outlet is receiving advice from civil liberties organisations and the NUJ. Before being legally forced to hand over the server, Indymedia Bristol stated: "We do not intend to voluntarily hand over information to the police as they have requested". Bristol Indymedia see the seizure of their server and the arrest of one of their volunteers as an attack on the freedom of speech. A further statement from Bristol Indymedia volunteers is expected soon.

This is the second time that law enforcement authorities have attacked Indymedia servers in the UK in the run up to a major event. Last October, just prior to the European Social Forum, Indymedia servers in London were seized in an international law enforcement operation - prompting a wave of protests and solidarity statements from a wide range of organisations [report]. This time, events are unfolding one week before the G8 Summit begins in Scotland.

In order to provide grass-roots non-corporate coverage during the G8 protests and events, Indymedia UK needs additional http mirrors to help decrease bandwidth costs. If you would like to help, please contact us at or donate here.

No Party Ordinance Approved!

Santa Cruz, CA, 29.06.2005 07:21

Santa Cruz City Council voted to approve the "no party" ordinance tonight. It will go into effect in 30 days from today.

The vote was five to two in favor of the broad sweeping ordinance, which with its current language, disproportionately punishes renters and students who hold two or less parties within a 12-month timeframe, sends letters to the parents of 18-21 year olds, and letters upon the first warning to landlords, does not create an appeals process, nor did it create measurable criteria for what constitutes a violation of the "quiet enjoyment of public property."

Opponents of this ordinance will be meeting to organize soon to campaign for the repeal of this draconian ordinance unfairly targeting students and young people.
