We Need Your Help to Stop CAFTA

Rogue Valley, 08.07.2005 21:05

Southern Oregonians understand what a lost job means for working families. We have seen too many of our jobs shipped overseas. In the last decade Oregon has lost 14,000 jobs because of NAFTA and now there is an attempt to expand the free trade area into Central America. The new Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) has passed in the Senate and will come to a vote in the House any day. Our Representative, Congressman Greg Walden, could cast the deciding vote to stop CAFTA and the outsourcing of Oregon Jobs.

The Voices and the Violence in Gleneagles

DC, 08.07.2005 21:04

The Voices and the Violence in Auchterarder When I began to write the day after the march in Gleneagles, it was the violence that griped my mind, that formed the words. I, unlike many of the people I spoke to on wednesday, had been drained by sight of it. I felt the moral force ebb away from our protest even as it happened, and it was my sincere wish to be somewhere else. But there are many other stories of that day, and I shall begin with them, because the worst effect of violence is that nothing else can be heard above it - no other voices find their way through. The issues are forgotten, even if the violence is short lived.

The Santa Cruz Midnight Mystery Ride

Santa Cruz, CA, 08.07.2005 21:04

Santa Cruz had its first Midnight Mystery Ride two Fridays ago. 30 riders explored the dark hours of pedal powered play. It was announced at Guerrilla Drive-In where 200 people cheered, but when it was time to ride only 2 people came along.

"Just follow the flaming can of PBR on the back of my bike, and maybe we'll pick up some folks along the way".

We darted down creekside paths through the circles and emerged onto the ocean cliff, booming in the moonlight. The air was crisp and we jangled past the lighthouse: car free and serene. We rounded the bend to the Pub, expecting to see no one, but instead were challenged by an boisterous mob of bikey kids.

"Where have you beeeeeen? We've been waiting 15 minutes....we already have our milk and cookies...we want to go....."

And then the Mad Mystery ride began. We paraded up Pacific Ave, bells and yells, sharing the Friday night traffic dance with the the cars and pedestrians. story and photos...

Metro Workers Struggle for Contract

Santa Cruz, CA, 08.07.2005 21:04

Santa Cruz Metro workers, are ramping up pressure for a fair deal after their contract talks reached a stalemate. The contract for bus drivers, mechanics, and other workers, expired this week, but was extended for one week while the talks continue. The workers maintained a three hour picket line at the downtown bus station Wednesday, after talks with management broke off.

Transit workers around the nation have been facing off with employers over health care and wages. In Oakland, CA a strike of 2,300 Bay Area Rapid Transit workers was derailed early Wednesday morning, after union officials, and BART management agreed to contract terms. Elsewhere, union officials in Phoenix, AZ put the brakes on a June 30 bus strike, and in Philadelphia last month, SEPTA (transit) workers agreed to stay on the job without a contract until Sept 5.

San Diego, 08.07.2005 21:04

Ricardo Morales Carbajal was shot and killed by sdpd officer Phillip Bozarth outside the home of Carbajal’s wife on June 25. Carbajal was Bozarth’s fifth fatal victim while on duty and at least his seventh shooting during his 22 years with the sdpd. The police propaganda machine has put out the usual story, involving a gun on the seat, too dark to see, etc. etc. Carbajal’s family is disputing this account.

While we fix the tech problems with the razorwire, Richmond IMCistas are posting breaking news to this feature: 2:40 PM Report from Dave, a street medic: Police are making manuevers, with more equipped police arriving with gas masks in tow, but not on. There are only 20 police visible, but he's aware that there are more around every corner. The crowd of protestors has remained with those locked down in front of Massey, with energy steady. Some protesters are using bullhorns to address Massey corporate leaders on the inside. Report from Aaron, RVA IMC editor: Larry Gibson is going to be allowed to go into the Massey headquarters to meet with coal company representatives. Larry is going to tell them to come outside and meet with the protesters directly. 2:05 PM Call from locked-down protester: "We're here in solidarity with people of West Virginia and Appalachia, whose homes and lives are being destroyed by Massey coal company. Massey has a processing plant right next to an elementary school, where many children suffering from asthma because of this. We want Massey to immediately stop processing coal near the school, and to stop mountain top removal. We are also here in solidarity with the G8 protests in Scotland." 2:00 PM The police stopped several protesters from hanging a banner from a traffic light that read: "Massey Is Destroying Us." There were no arrests. 1:55 PM A lockdown has just taken place directly in front of Massey's front door on 4th Street. There are 3 lock boxes, 4 people locked down to 2 heavy paper mache mountains. 12 people have linked arms in solidarity, including Larry Gibson of West Virginia, whose family has lived in the mountains there for hundreds of years. They're chanting "king coal, off with his head," handing out flyers to curious and generally supportive bystanders. Police presence is still light. 1:15 PM The march to Massey corporate headquarters has begun, pausing at the intersection of Belvidere and Franklin. Numbers holding strong in the vacinity of 300. So far the police presence is fairly light with five officers on bikes keeping their distance and two cruisers trailing the march. Children are playing in the grass while anarchists, Appalachia residents and earth lovers stand amid colorful, paper mache puppets and hand painted banners with slogans such as "Industrial Capitalism is killing our people." Canadian judge rules to extradite Tre Arrow to U.S.

Portland, 08.07.2005 21:04

Mr. Tre Arrow was ordered to be committed for extradition by Judge Kirstie Gill this morning, July 7, 2005. This means the judge's functions are done, and the extradition process now goes into the hands of the Minister, subject of course to Tre's right of appeal, which he plans to file-a notice of appeal-Mr. Tre Arrow will absolutely appeal this decision.

Basically, Judge Gill didn't accept Tim Russell's arguments; she chose to accept the Crown's. She found that she has no jurisdiction to consider the constitutional issues that Tim presented-and found that in this context, she wasn't going to engage the co-conspirators exception to the heresay rule. In considering those elements, she committed Tre for extradition.

Again, Mr. Tre Arrow will exercise the appeal process of Canada to the fullest extent possible, as he would NOT receive a fair trial in the United States of America.

Bombs explode in London; Perpetrators unknown

Portland, 08.07.2005 21:04

UK IMC reports: It appears that there were 3 explosions on the London Underground along with another bomb that exploded on a London Bus blowing its roof. There was no warning and although an unknown group linking themselves to Al Qaeda has claimed responsibility on a known Jihadist web site (Arabic web site, translation here), this has not yet been confirmed. The BBC are reporting that the death toll now stands at 38, with another 700 or so injured, whilst at least The Sun (not one of the more reliable of the UK papers) is now reporting 53 fatalities. Reports that the Israeli embassy had been tipped off are circulating although a Scotland Yard spokesman denied this. more, at UK IMC >>A Brit reflects on the day's events and 'terrorism'Isn't it wonderful? The timing of the bombs? Right after the G8 meeting? I won't be surprised if the crisis in Africa go untouched now, considering that America's eyes have shifted from poverty to terrorism. Anyone else have similar suspicions? As word reels in from London about the horrific blasts in the subway there, I am not sure how to feel. My mate expresses horror that innocent civilians have been targeted. I point out that a poor man's war is no more devastating than a rich man's war, that there are no innocents in London or America if you're living through Iraq. That it's the consumption habits of firstworlders like us that leads to bombs raining down on people "over there." I believe that. But somehow, even to me, those words are just not adequate to capture all the complexity in this.

Because the truth is, the people on those subway trains are just people, just like me. And because they were riding the trains rather than driving in cars, I believe the working class was disproportionately hit. And finally, because a million people stood shoulder to shoulder in the streets of that very city to demand an end to the wars in the middle east, I question the need to blast them out of complacency.

I do not know who lit the fuses, so to speak. If we are to believe the corporate media, then it was Al Quaida. But I never believe the corporate media, so I'm convinced it could just as easily have been the bush regime, just to show Londoners a lesson -- "See? Terrorists. Better get behind this never-ending war on terror." In fact, considering who stands to gain and who stands to lose the most, it seems much more likely to me that it was American terrorists than anyone else. Who knows.

read more >>CNN fans the flames of anti-Muslim hatredJust watched Lou Dobbs on CNN. "Islamic Terrorists" bombed targets in London this morning, according to Dobbs. No mention of proof. They did it period. Dobbs has become the posterboy for racist, lying reporting that regularly demonizes immigrants, legal and otherwise. Any illusions that CNN is somehow 'better' than FOX News is totally disproved by the reality of Dobb's vicious nightly attacks. But to actually declare within 7 hours of these bombings that 'Islamic Terrorists' were definitely responsible is nothing short of irresponsible propagandizing. CNN tries hard to come across as fair and balanced, but Dobb's ultra-primetime slot every single night betrays CNN's true philosophy. When the trials for 911 begin, there's going to be a lot of 'newspeople' defending themselves against conspiracy charges. Conspiracy to coverup the truth, and aiding and abetting MASS MURDER. Lou Dobbs will be at the very top of that list. Can't wait to see his smug mug behind bars in Leavenworth, right next to Bush and Cheneythesatan. comment >>Indymedia UK Statement on London bombsIndymedia UK stands in solidarity with all the victims of today's horrific attacks in London. We share the disgust felt by all about these acts and their perpetrators, our thoughts are with the victims and their families. We are also acutely aware that these events will be exploited by the most reactionary elements of the British media and political establishment for their own selfish purposes. We are particularly concerned about a possible backlash against Britain's Muslim community as we saw following 9/11 in the USA. read more >>Who did the London Bombings? Those of you who understand the significance of propaganda should be able to understand that the Live 8 event signified that people like the Bolivians and the Venezuelans are finally winnning their centuries long battle with those Capitalists, thus requiring Capitalists to start caring, or at least try to look like they care, these being capitalists you should remember. And wouldn't you know it, next thing you know that Osama Bin Laden would show up and start blowing up working class people so that politicians could then take away some more of their civil rights.

...Personally, I think this operation looks more like a classic Karl Rove operation, rather than an Osama operation...

G8 Day1: G8 Blockades, Mass Arrests and Fence Breaches

United Kingdom, 08.07.2005 21:03

Movement against the G8 started very early this morning: while the beacons of dissent were still burning in the dark in the Ochil Hills, hundreds of people were making their way out of the Stirling convergence eco-camp 'Hori-Zone' to head for Gleneagles. Initial clashes with riot police forced many back, but other went on to occupy roads. In Edinburgh there was an attempt to blockade G8 delegates in the Sheraton Grand hotel and people obstructed delegate coaches as they passed through the streets. The M9 motorway was also blocked by a several hundred people.

Throughout the morning multiple blockades were set up on the approach roads to Gleneagles, from people locking themselves together to the late afternoon Kids Tea Party blockade. All this activity resulted in many G8 delegates having to delay their trip to Gleneagles. Later in the afternoon, and despite sporadic torrential rain and long traffic jams, people continued to converge aound Gleneagles Hotel. Just before midday, the police announced that the G8Alternatives march and rally at the town of Auchterader had been cancelled, but despite this announcemnt thousands of people continued to stream towards the G8 Summit location. Coach loads of protestors were also delayed for hours by police roadblocks, but the majority were allowed through in the end.

Meanwhile a spontaneous demonstration was taking place in Edinburgh. This was mainly made up of some 700 people whose buses had been prevented from reaching Auchterader. The demonstration started in Princess St and was quickly penned in by police, with some people arrested violently. Local people watching the police actions shouted "outrage" and "disgrace".

In Auchterader at around 1pm, up to 10,000 people started to move towads the perimeter of the fence. The demonstration included many national and international groups and networks, as well as a large battalion of the clowns, Seattle’s Infernal Noise Brigade and an International Samba Band. This mixture of people, groups and nationalities gave a cheerful and colourful athmosphere to the demonstration.

When the march reached a fence blocking the road to Gleneagles Hotel many people paused bringing the entire march to a standstill. Later a determined group of people dismantled the fence in front of police lines, whilst another group of about 700 people moved into a nearby field towards another fence that actually formed the enclosure of the Glenegales Hotel. This was also partialy dimantled by this crowd, and a watch tower attacked. At this point police presence was masive, with hundreds of riot police, police on horses, police with dogs, and even military helicopters that kept dramaticaly flying in more riot police. The crowd maintained their ground for over an hour resisting police charges, whilst a group of about 100 people staged a sit down protest in front of the gap caused by the earlier breach of the fence. Eventually a big police charge managed to push people back down the hill and out of the fields. While Auchterarder itself was full of protestors, many local residents were friendly and there were no clashes or property destruction.

The Legal Support Team reported "hundreds of arrests" throughout the days actions and blockades, whilst a later update spoke of "over 400 arrests" confirmed, several of which are the result of London's FIT teams.

G8 Day 2: Thursday 7th

United Kingdom, 08.07.2005 21:03

After a long day on the streets [Personal Accounts: 1 | 2] the people that slept at the eco-village awoke to being surrounded by police on the second day on the G8 meetings at Gleneagles. The police stated they had no intention of invading the eco-village, but were concerned about "more disruptions". People were barely allowed to leave the camp all day, with police only letting small groups out at a time if they provided personal information. The police used Section 60 as justification, effectively halting movement from the eco-village. By five pm all actions from the camp had been cancelled and there was consensus to not resist the blockade today, although at times tension rose high as people demonstrated in front of the police lines. However, the anarchists did challenge the police to a football match and claimed victory when the police did not play.[Pics of Eco-Village 1 | 2]

Meanwhile in Edinburgh, prisoner support actions took place in the early afternoon at Saughton prison near Haymarket station accompanied by Seattle's Infernal Noise Brigade. There was also a spontaneous prisoner support rally in front of the Sheriff Court where at least two people were arrested [pics]. More solidarity actions are planned for tomorrow Friday 8th July. [Prisoner Support Statement | Wombles targeted in Glasgow police operation]

In Glasgow, six people locked down to Weir Pumps, one of the first companies in the UK to win contracts in Iraq. On the other hand, and following explosions in the London tube today, bomb threats were also made and responded to in Edinburgh.

G8 Day 3, Friday: Glasgow Party and Prisoner Support

United Kingdom, 08.07.2005 21:03

To celebrate the end of the G8 summit and to hightlight opposition to the extension of the M74 there has been a street party called in Glasgow. [Detailed timeline]

With hundreds of arrests, many waiting in the cells, and bail conditions telling people to leave within near impossible speeds, there were someprisoner solidarity protests planned. Around 100 people demonstrated outside Saughton prison in Edinburgh this afternoon.[Detailed timeline]

In the eco-village in Stirling, the situation is calm, but the police are still checking people going in and out. 3 arrests were made, apparently based on information from the Forward Intellegence Teams (FIT). The local police confirmed that (despite rumours) no private homes had their windows smashed and that the report of children being injured was false. [ Detailed timeline | photos 1, 2,3 ]

Many right wing commentators have tried to link the murder of these innocent people with the anti-war movements, the broad muslim community, those people who protested against poverty and war at the G8 summit in Scotland, in particular anarchists. However, these claims are contradicted by the sweeping condemnations of this act that have been issued by the groups in question. The tears of a muslim mother are no different from those of a non-muslim mother. The colour of blood running in muslim veins is the very same as that running in non-muslim veins.Who do these despicable perpetrators of this barbaric act want to fool? Irish Muslim RepresentativeThere is a danger of a racist backlash in Britain aimed against the Muslim population and other ethnic minorities. The day following the bombings the Muslim Council of Britain reported that 30,000 threatening e/mails have been received by Muslim organisations. This threat must be fought against . CWIOur thoughts are with all those killed and wounded in this morning’s terrible attacks in London. London is a centre of peace, the most multiracial city in Europe and a global centre of opposition to the war and occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan. A majority of those killed and wounded will have opposed the war in Iraq; some will have joined the huge marches for peace. SWP UKAs social anarchists and libertarian communists, we deplore the horrific attacks on innocent people this morning in London. We express our deepest sympathy to anyone affected by the blasts. We condemn the use of violence against ordinary people and the perpetrators of the bombings whether they be Islamists or anyone else. UK AnarchistsOn behalf of Sinn Féin I offer my sincere condolences to the victims and the families of those killed and injured and to the people of London. Gerry Adams/Sinn FeinWith so many Irish people resident in London, there has always been a close affinity between the Irish people and the British capital and all our thoughts will be with those who have been injured or who have lost relatives in these attacks. Pat Rabbite/Labour PartyIndymedia UK stands in solidarity with all the victims of today's horrific attacks in London. We share the disgust felt by all about these acts and their perpetrators, our thoughts are with the victims and their families. We are also acutely aware that these events will be exploited by the most reactionary elements of the British media and political establishment for their own selfish purposes. UK Indymedia We have worked without rest to remove the causes of such violence from our world. We argued, as did the security services in this country, that the attacks on Afghanistan and Iraq would increase the threat of terrorist attack in Britain. Tragically Londoners have now paid the price of the government ignoring such warnings. London is a centre of peace, the most multiracial city in Europe and a global centre of opposition to the war and occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan. A majority of those killed and wounded will have opposed the war in Iraq; some will have joined the huge marches for peace. These bombings followed the biggest ever protest in Scotland’s history against world poverty. The anti-war message was everywhere on that magnificent march. These bombings target ordinary people travelling by bus and underground to work and study; people who oppose Tony Blair’s support for George Bush and their occupation of Iraq. They are in no way a blow against imperialism or the G8 leaders, who are ensconced in a luxury hotel 450 miles north of London. The British government cannot avoid its responsibility for these terrible attacks, which are a consequence of its support for war and occupation in Iraq and Afghanistan. The best way to ensure that there are no more such terrible attacks is for British troops to be withdrawn from there immediately. As a mark of respect for the dead we have cancelled the opening day of our Marxism 2005 event. We call on the international anti-war movement and the global left to rally round the people of London and, in the face of these terrible attacks, to redouble their work for global peace and justice. Every year they meet to discuss how to further their interests, expand their empire, and tighten their grip on every aspect of our lives. Although a BART strike was averted by a last minute agreement and a new contract, there is still much commuter dissatisfaction with the Bay Area's largest transit system. Doh BAAAARRRT!

San Francisco Bay Area, 08.07.2005 21:02

Although a BART strike was averted by a last minute agreement and a new contract, there is still much commuter dissatisfaction with the Bay Area's largest transit system. BART was created in the 1960s well after General Motors, it's front organization National City Lines, the automotive industry, the oil cartel, and the US Government decided to destroy inner-city mass transit by declaring it obsolete and declaring that the private automobile with its wasteful and polluting internal combustion engine was the pinnacle of freedom.

From the Newswire..."BART workers need to realize that the riders ought to be their allies, not their enemy. Instead of engaging in a work-stoppage strike, BART workers ought to consider a strike that allows all riders to ride for free.... Meanwhile, BART ridership needs to realize that the BART workers are not their enemy either. BART workers don't decide to raise BART fares, BART management does." Read More.

4 Bombs Rock London: Scores Dead, Hundreds Hurt

San Francisco Bay Area, 08.07.2005 21:01

7/8: As the subway lines are now re-opened and London attempts a return to normalcy, authorities are reporting that 50 people are confirmed dead in the bomb attacks, with at least 10 more expected to be found as they search through the rubble in the subway system. The number killed on the double-decker bus has been reported as thirteen. Investigators at this point believe each bomb weighed less than 10 pounds and could have fit into a backpack. The preliminary presumption regarding responsibility is that the bombers were part of an al-Qaida cell but no further information about perpetrators is available. The significance and meaning of the attack is being debated across the media.
7/7, 1:50pm PST: Casualty figures in the coordinated attacks have risen to 37 dead and over 700 wounded with many of those in critical condition. British authorities are said to be in search of perpetrators. It is still unknown if suicide bombers or placed-explosives are to blame. Conspiracy theories have begun to fly around the internet as to who is responsible, possible motives, and who might stand to gain or lose politically from the attacks.
7/7, 8:35am PST: In London this morning, three subway bombs and one in a double-decker bus have killed scores of people. At the moment, reports are in that at least 21 have died in one subway attack, 5 in another, and 7 in the third, while it is unknown the number killed in totally destroyed double-decker bus. London's transport system has been shut down. A group calling itself "Secret Organization Group of al Qaida of Jihad Organization in Europe" has claimed responsibility. Tony Blair has said he is returning to London from Gleneagles.

In the Bay Area, D.C., and nationwide transportation officials are on heightened alert. US officials have raised terror alert system to "Code Orange" for domestic mass transit.
