Update on 7/8 Anti-G8 Protest in San Francisco

Santa Cruz, CA, 16.07.2005 01:02

POSSIBLE LEGAL FALLOUT FOR PROTESTERS FROM SF'S ANTI-G8 DEMO

Demonstrators at the July 8th action met at 8pm at the 16th & Mission BART Plaza. During the first half hour, protesters converged, and bilingual pamphlets were distributed to residents, passers-by, and protesters. Within a few minutes of marching, the SFPD declared the march illegal and ordered those present to disperse. People continued to march down Mission St. and were pushed from the streets onto the sidewalks. A sound system was confiscated and the person carrying it was arrested relatively quickly for noise "violations."

Once it turned onto Valencia Street, the march broke up as one portion was blocked in by riot police and the other portion outran the cops. The march was periodically broken into different groups, taking different routes along Mission & Valencia streets. Many corporate businesses were targeted for property destruction and newspaper stands were placed in the roads as barricades to block the police. Damage to corporate targets included: Two Wells Fargo Banks, a Bank of America ATM, Kentucky Fried Chicken, PG&E, Chevron, Vanguard Properties, Skechers, and Shoebiz.

At 23rd and Valencia an altercation with police officers took place. Reports say that officers ran their car into the crowd at unsafe speeds, protesters attacked the car, and the police tackled people in the crowd. A scuffle broke out and left one police officer injured with a cracked skull that required 7 staples. 6 people were arrested and face severe charges. One person is still being held on a $50,000 bond. Corporate news is reporting that this incident is causing a political fallout within the SFPD. Deputy Chief Greg Suhr is being transfered from the SFPD and it has now been confirmed that the FBI is investigating the incidents.

Two San Diego Organizers Jailed for Resisting the Grand Jury

San Diego, 16.07.2005 01:02

8pm(PST) - A rally and vigil for David and Danae started at the Federal courthouse at 8pm, and soon after moved to the Federal Prison down the street. With chants of "Civil Rights are under attack, what do we do? Act Up, Fight Back!" and "Freedom Now!" the 35 demonstrators got responses both from the prisonsers inside (who banged on the windows) and the guards outside (who threatened to arrest anyone on Federal Property). Photos from the Rally

5pm (PST) - Michael Cardenas has finished testifying and has been dismissed. He expressed that he does not feel that he shared any information that wasn't already publicly available or already known to the prosecutors. Detailed account

3pm (PST) - Danae Kelley and David Agranoff have been taken into federal custody.

Grand Jury Prisoners Update

San Diego, 16.07.2005 01:02

On Tuesday, July 12th, David Agranoff and Danae Kelley appeared before Judge Irma Gonzalez at the District Court in San Diego for refusing to cooperate with a federal grand jury. Judge Gonzalez, with the
prosecution's encouragement, ordered the two jailed immediately for civil contempt. David and Danae are currently being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in San Diego. They are imprisoned tonight, not because they have committed or are suspected of committing any actual crime but because they have refused to cooperate with the federal government’s latest witch hunt.

The Grand Jury probe is demanding that those subpoenaed disclose their political beliefs, the names of their friends and associates, the
political beliefs of their friends and associates and even the names of those in attendance at a public speaking event two years ago. Of all eight people known to have appeared before the Grand Jury, only these two refused to testify on the grounds of First Amendment objections. Help is greatly needed to put pressure on authorities to release them.

Please call the jail now and continue calling. Be polite but insistent on demanding their immediate release. Also inquire about their status and well-being. David and Danae are both vegan and we want to ensure that they have access to healthy vegan food (per Judge Gonzalez’s order). Keep in mind that, like the Feds, the jailers often lie... so be persistent.

The next rally will be held at the Federal Building (880 Front Street & Broadway) on Tuesday, July 19th at 5:30pm and will move to the MCC. Please keep up the pressure until they're free!!

VA set to execute Robin Lovitt on July 11

Richmond, 16.07.2005 01:02

The clock is ticking once again! At 9:00 PM on Monday, July 11, Virginia is set to execute Robin Lovitt. This will mark the 95th time since 1982 when the first execution in the Commonwealth post re-instatement of Capital Punishment took place. The evidence in Mr. Lovitt's case, which state law requires be maintained prior to an execution, has already been destroyed. No one disagrees that the records in the case have been destroyed. All sides agree that the evidence is irretrievable. The disagreement is whether Robin Lovitt, the man whose life is literally “on the line” as of 9:00 PM tonight deserves to die as a result of a “mistake” by the State of Virginia. By Virginia law, Lovitt is entitled to a complete review of the record and a testing of DNA materials involved in his case before his destruction by the State of Virginia. At the present time it would appear that the only official with the power to undo the mistakes of the Commonwealth is Gov. Mark Warner. As governor, he has the power to stop the clock at any time between now and 8:59 PM on July 11th. When the state by its own admission has destroyed the only existing evidence that a condemned man relies upon to prove his guilt or innocence, there should only be one path to follow. Gov. Warner needs to commute Mr. Lovitt’s sentence and order a new trial. To do any less would condemn Robin Lovitt to the slow death of life in prison without parole or to the scheduled execution on July11th. You can contact Gov. Warner via his website or by phone and fax. Gov. Mark R. Warner State Capitol, 3rd Floor Richmond, Virginia 23219 Phone: (804) 786-2211 Fax: (804) 371-6351 TTY/TDD (For the Hearing Impaired): (804) 371-8015 To send an electronic email message to the governor click below: http://www.governor.virginia.gov/Contact/email_form.html For a Fact Sheet on details of the case of Robin Lovitt visit: http://www.vadp.org/action.htm .

Need Some Mutual Aid? Check Out the MAP!

Chicago, 16.07.2005 01:01

MAPMutual Aid Phonebook, or MAP, is an ambitious project, to create a directory - starting in Chicago and branching out across the country - where anarchists and anti-authoritarians can post an ad (for free) advertising any skills you may have to offer your comrades. Skills might include: bike repair, barbers, computers, recording studios... anything at all.

MAP is an attempt for us to start putting our ideals into practice - namely, Mutual Aid. How often do we really help each other out? How often do we have a skill that goes under used because no one else knows we have it? How often do we give money back to capital that would be much better used inside our own movement?

Well, let's stop! Submit your skill, your resource, or your project to be listed in MAP, and let others know about it! Help each other and yourself!

Just check out the contact page, submit your project, and spread the word! If we all really work at it, building alternative structures to capitalism is actually pretty easy. Read more.

Federal Agents "Visit" Black Panther's Widow, Son

Chicago, 16.07.2005 01:01

Akua Njeri, Fred Hampton Jr. From the newswire: "Federal agents descended this morning on the [Chicago] home of Akua Njeri, the widow of assassinated Black Panther leader Fred Hampton to 'question' her about an alleged threat to the U.S. Attorney for northern Illinois. According to Njeri and her son Fred Jr., who was present during the incident, federal agents connected the inquiry to Njeri's support of jailed police brutality opponent and former death row inmate Aaron Patterson."

Njeri said in an interview: "The last time I saw the FBI was December 4, 1969, when they came calling," referring to the date the FBI and local law enforcement raided a west-side apartment, killing Hampton and fellow Black Panther Mark Clark in a predawn attack as part of a coordinated series of counterintelligence programs against the Black Panther Party and other radical groups.

Around 2 million people in Massachusetts have criminal records that are accessible by potential employers, public housing officials, and sometimes any member of the public. Last Wednesday, the local Union of Minority Neighborhoods kicked off a campaign to change the Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) system by holding a public organizing meeting. In this radio piece, Ronald -- a Boston native who's spent 25+ years in jail -- talks about the difficulties, underlying racism, and possible reforms to CORI checks in Massachusetts.

Anti-Corporate Campaigners Call on TIAA-CREF to Dump Wal-Mart and Coke Stock as Unethical Investments

Boston, 16.07.2005 01:01

On Monday, July 11, 2005, a dozen people gathered for half-an-hour starting at noon outside TIAA-CREF’s offices in Boston’s financial district. They were protesting and passing out informational fliers as part of the lead up to next week’s TIAA-CREF annual shareholders meeting, where members of the Make TIAA-CREF Ethical Coalition will press TIAA-CREF, one of the country’s largest pension funds, to divest from Coca-Cola, Wal-Mart and other corporations that do not do business ethically. Wal-Mart is well known for its exploitive labor practices, while Coke is guilty of a number of socially irresponsible practices, ranging from marketing junk food to children in the US to complicity with death squads in Colombia.

In solidarity with everyone protesting against the G8 and global poverty, as well as to highlight a positive step people can take towards reducing global pollution and climate change (go by bike!) roughly 35 cyclists set off from Hoglands Park in central Southampton- also the meeting point for the Make Poverty History demo which, unlike our little outing made the local TV news...

Cowley Road Carnival

United Kingdom, 16.07.2005 01:01

Hooray! No cars! All the fun of a reclaim the streets action but no hassle from police! Despite the day's greyness Oxford's cultural diversity was celebrated in all its multi colour fabness. The freedom of the streets came to East Oxford in an organised fashion this year celebrating the theme of the 'Earth'.. with everyone dressed up as hippies with lots of green and flowers everywhere.. I even spotted some people dressed up as vegetables.. All with the exception of the cheeky 'G8 leaders' who made a re-appearance to celebrate capitalism and poverty only as they know how, with a brief stop to bow down and worship at Tesco's on their way..

There was some great music to be heard from all walks of life, with artists and performers from the local community and from overseas too... with some specially sponsored graffiti above some local shops to jazz it all up and remind us of a great day had by all.

Check out the main carnival website for more info and photos.

Heed the People - Respect the Law - Stop the Dig - Save Tara!

Ireland, 16.07.2005 01:00

Excavations on the site M3 and Tara Interchange have begun. Work has started on the M3 at last. However the only area signed off for commencement is at the Tara area on the route. From a Concerned Commenteer: The Tara campaign has become quiet of late, and it is time to mobilize public support in a very public way. There has been a need to separate litigation from the Save Tara Skryne Valley Group, in order to ensure protection from liability for the members of the non-incorporated group, who are not taking action, or directly supporting it. However, a strong message needs to be sent to the Government, and to the nation, that the people want the digs stopped. As you have seen, a new survey (PDF here / Methodology here) shows the majority of Irish people are against the route, and thus the excavation of Tara. On June 14th, the Minister for the Environment, The Attorney General, Meath County Council, and the National Roads Authority will come to the High Court and give their first answer to the legal charges railed against them. Certain procedural determinations will be made that way, on how the case will proceed. One of the main issues, of course, will be whether the authorities will stop work of their own accord, and respect the legal process, or whether they will plough ahead, and the judge will be forced to either issue an order or an injunction. The fact that works are still continuing since the July 4th hearing in the High Court, when leave was granted to review the lagality of the M3 motorway scheme, shows the contempt the authorities have for the law. They must be shown up, for the cultural criminals they are. A protest will begin outside the High Court on the morning of Thursday 14th July, at 9.00 am. It will continue throughout the day, until the hearing is concluded. The hearing will begin at 11.00 am - and could run into the afternoon. Mass peaceful demonstration must happen, if it is ever to happen for Tara. This is an opportunity to reverse the PR and lies being circulated by the likes of Minister Cullen, Meath Chambers of Commerce, IBEC, to the effect that only a small minority of troublemakers care about Tara. This must be a spontaneous outpouring. We need a strong representative group of Irish society there, including children, housewives, businessmen, shopkeepers and old age pensionners to come down and make their own sign. It is better that this is not seen to be 'organised' by Save Tara Skryne Valley group, since they are not taking litigation. It must be representatives of ALL environmental, social and political groups and PARTIES, who have an interest in this issue. Please call your party, your boss, your society and get a mandate to put out a call. This is the best opportunity we will have for months. The world media will be watching, and we have to shout now, as loud as we can. Details / Photos of Work In Progress At Tara Work has started on the M3 at last. However the only area signed off for commencement is at the Tara area on the route. Archeological dig licenses have been issued for work at Tara and nowhere else on the M3. Despite the M3 having been designed in stages, the Irish Government and Meath Co Co have adopted an all or nothing approach. Work should be commencing for the undisputed section from Clonee to bypass Dunshaughlin but there is no sign of this, and indeed it seems the section will only happen once the Tara section of the M3 and the Tara Intersection is complete. As Dunshaughlin is a major bottleneck on the N3 it would make sense to start that stretch. However, judging by the manner of the digging at the site of the Tara Interchange, excavations of the whole 3km stretch through the valley will be completed in a matter of weeks. Though this might seem like good news for commuters, it will unlikely be bad news for those with an interest in Gaelic heritage and culture. Hopefully the diggers don't come across another 'Tara Brooch' because judging by the in the interest of those digging, not alone will the digger destroy it but it'll never be discovered (or maybe that is the point). http://www.indymedia.ie/attachments/jul2005/tara_2.jpg http://www.indymedia.ie/attachments/jul2005/tara_3.jpg http://www.indymedia.ie/attachments/jul2005/tara_6.jpg http://www.indymedia.ie/attachments/jul2005/tara_5.jpg http://www.indymedia.ie/attachments/jul2005/tara_1.jpg http://www.indymedia.ie/attachments/jul2005/taraylayoutbest.jpg

Rossport 5 Statement After High Court Appearance On The 14th July

Shell has accepted, by implication, that it is in breach even of the rolling consents granted to them by ex-Minister Frank Fahy. We welcome Shell’s promise to abide by the consent and hope that this indicates a new attitude on their part to what behaviour is tolerable in a democratic society. It is regrettable that this decision to abide by the law has been extracted from Shell as a result of the action of our legal team, and is not a voluntary conversion. What a commentary this is on accepted business ethics, when such behaviour is practised with impunity. We are in jail, as a last resort, to protect ourselves and our families, our neighbours and our area, from potential destruction by gas pipeline rupture. That remains our position, our one and only requirement: no-one can do less. Pipelines rupture: no pipeline engineer intends this to happen but it does, with sickening frequency. The outlandish pipeline here proposed, to be forced in close proximity past our houses, is the stuff of nightmares. What they do to us, they will do to you. The solution we are proposing, i.e. a shallow offshore platform, is the only positive one. It means yes to gas, yes to jobs, but yes to health and safety. Rainforest Action Network Protest At Wells Fargo

San Francisco Bay Area, 16.07.2005 01:00

On Wednesday July 13th, local environmental and social justice activists hosted a lunch-hour sidewalk “cook-in” at Wells Fargo’s headquarters in San Francisco’s busy financial district. Activists called on the banking giant to "get on the wagon" and stop profiting at the expense of communities and the environment. The protest was timed to coincide with Wells Fargo's 153rd anniversary festivities.
Wells Fargo is one of the largest US banks still operating without meaningful social or environmental safeguards to prevent destructive investments. Despite their surprise July 11 announcement of a so-called "10-point environmental commitment," Wells Fargo continues to be a top financier of environmentally and socially destructive corporations like Burlington Resources, a Houston-based company drilling for oil on indigenous homelands in Ecuador, and BlueLinx, a timber-importer linked to illegal logging and human rights abuses in Indonesia.
Unlike competitors such as Citigroup, Bank of America, and JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo refuses to take seriously its role as a bankroller of global warming, and consistently avoids making any specific commitments to curtail oil investments, safeguard endangered ecosystems, or to uphold human rights in areas where it invests money. Moreover, Wells Fargo profits from other types of social injustice such as predatory lending and charging exorbitant fees to low-income immigrants seeking to wire money home to their families overseas.
