Calm Before the Storm: NYC Solitude

NYC, 26.07.2004 20:48

As New York city braces itself for the malestrom that will be the Republican Convention, The Indypendent weighs in on some ways to find solitude in the big city, and catch your breath before the republican storm.

"Some of the most peaceful spots in the city can be found on rooftops. Maybe you can sneak onto your roof at work; the more intrepid might need to employ the fire escape. Check out your roof at home or in a friend’s building — just scout out the area first for motion alarms, security cameras and self-locking doors."

Look Out CNN! Anarchists are Gonna Get Your Mama!--How the Media Demonizes Radical Dissent

Boston, 26.07.2004 19:30

As the political conventions come closer, Boston and New York's law enforcement brace for protests. In their battle to protect the citizenry from itself, police and FBI (with the help of a lap dog media) are using an age-old tactic: Demonize the Anarchists! I was listening to CNN Radio in my home this morning when a broadcaster started a new story on yet a new "elevated terror threat.” This time, the "threat" was centered around an "unconfirmed" report that a domestic group had plans to attack the media at the upcoming Democratic National Convention. Who was this menacing group? The anarchists. This is nothing new. The anarchists have never had a fair shake as far as the media is concerned.

Summary of DNC-Related Events, Sunday, July 25

Boston, 26.07.2004 15:11

As the Boston Social Forum wrapped up on Sunday, the day before the start of the DNC, protests were already under way.

About 1,000 people attended the anti-war march organized by International Act Now to Stop War and End Racism (International ANSWER) , which started on the Boston Common and went to the Fleet Center, site of the Democratic National Convention (DNC). While the event was on the Common, a right-winger set up a booth nearby, with anti-gay and anti-reproductive rights signs and literature. A shouting match ensued and ANSWER’s parade marshals forcibly escorted him away. As the march passed the Fleet Center, the police arrested a man of South Asian appearance for looking around “a little too curiously”, a blatant act of racial profiling. He was later released.

Later in the evening, there was a People’s Party to support the Fund the Dream campaign in a small park across from the Stony Brook "T" (subway) stop in the neighborhood of Jamaica Plain. It was within shouting of Sam Adam’s Brewery, where one of fifty-eight parties for delegates to the DNC, organized by Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, was taking place. Despite the fairly tame nature of the event, the police showed up with a paddy wagon. They threatened to arrest the National Lawyers’ Guild legal observers if they did not show their ID. The legal observers did not comply.

South Yorkshire Bus Strike

United Kingdom, 26.07.2004 14:59

A significant all out strike is under way by 800 bus drivers employed by First Bus, a major multinational with annual profits in excess of £160m, the strike has been solid as it goes into its second week.

Drivers are striking for a 40 hour week, a reduction of the maximum hours a day to eight-and-a-half hours and a quicker increase in pay for 'starter rate' drivers, who currently have to wait three and a half years to earn more than £5.85 an hour! Steve Clark, the regional organiser for the TGWU, says "Clearly we are in for the long haul".

Racial Profiling at DNC

Boston, 26.07.2004 14:34

Gay Rights Protesters Will Picket "Unity 2004"

Boston, 26.07.2004 14:27

DontAmend.com has been outraged that national gay rights organizations have demanded nothing around equal marriage rights from the Democrats. "Rather than forthrightly saying that the civil rights of millions of Americans should be defended, most Democratic politicians have treated our equal marriage rights as at best, an unfortunate 'diversion' in their election campaigns," said Andy Thayer, National Action Coordinator for DontAmend.com. In addition to Kerry, other leading Democrats in Massachusetts are in the forefront of a move which could once again ban gay marriage there as early as 2006.

Report from Boston: Stay Out of the "Free Speech Zone"

NYC, 26.07.2004 11:47

Last night, I had my first direct experience with the so-called free speech zone. It left me with one conclusion: whatever you do, do NOT go inside. It’s not only a blatant offense to free speech, but also highly dangerous and unsafe. I would suggest protesting anywhere in Boston but inside of it. No amount of hyperbole can accurately describe how disastrous the interior actually is. It’s like a scene from some post-apocalyptic movie – a futuristic, industrial detention area from a Mad Max film. You are surrounded on all sides by concrete blocks and steel fencing, with razor wire lining the perimeter. Then, there is a giant black net over the entire space. Llamamiento a la Campaña de Financiación del GFL (Foro Legal de Génova)

Euskal Herria, 26.07.2004 09:22

Study Says Elites, Fluff Dominates WTTW's "Chicago Tonight"

Chicago, 26.07.2004 00:00

The local media watchdog group Chicago Media Action has released a comprehensive analysis of WTTW's flagship public affairs program, Chicago Tonight, and the results paint a picture of bias and exclusion. The report, "Chicago Tonight: Elites, Affluence and Advertising", has found that the majority of WTTW/CT stories are actually infotainment news -- and the majority of guests are advocates for the business community, political elites and advertisers. Blacks, Latinos, union members and reformers were a miniscule percentage of guests over the study period, particularly on topics related to business, the economy, politics and elections.

'Public' stations like WTTW are supposed to provide an alternative to commercial broadcasting, something CMA's study suggests the station is failing abysmally to do. CMA is encouraging local residents to contact WTTW about the lack of diversity in "Chicago Tonight", and has set up a webpage that allows viewers to send their message directly to the station. Read more.

Danger - Free Speech Zone: Keep Out!

Boston, 25.07.2004 23:10

Last night, I had my first direct experience with the so-called free speech zone. It left me with one conclusion, whatever you do, do NOT go inside. It’s not only a blatant offense to free speech, but it is highly dangerous and unsafe. I would suggest protesting anywhere in Boston but inside of it. Here’s the story. After having dinner in Boston, about 9 activists and myself thought we would take an after dinner stroll to check out the space that the city of Boston had reserved for the citizenry to express themselves. For several minutes, it was hard to find the entrances, as the outside is a intractable mess of fencing, piles of stored construction equipment and wire, with a large sign posted the main entrance that stated, “Hard Hat Area: No admittance” It took a while for us to realize we could use these to enter, in direct contradiction to the signs directive. speech, but it is highly dangerous and unsafe. I would suggest protesting anywhere in Boston but inside of it.

Boston: Razorwire Enclosed "Free Speech Zone" Greets Protesters

NYC, 25.07.2004 20:38

As anti-RNC protesters prepare to herd themselves into pens on the West Side highway at the end of August (or make other plans), anti-DNC activists in Boston are facing truly repressive conditions as the Beantown Convention gets underway.

One Bostonian writes: "how do I describe the sense of dread that crawled under my skin as I observed that there were only two entrance/exits to this long narrow cage enclosed with two chain link fences, covered with a mesh net, topped with two rolls of razor wire." FBI Intimidation Escalates

Boston, 25.07.2004 16:08

Anarchists in Four States Harassed In what seems to be a campaign to intimidate and discourage activists across the country from attending upcoming protests in Boston, New York, and Washington DC, FBI Agents have tracked, intimidated, and questioned over twenty anarchists in Boston, Kansas, Missouri, and Colorado. FBI agents have given the subjects of these investigations conflicting reasons for the questioning. One agent in Kansas City stated that the agency was worried about the “E.L.F., the A.L.F. and P.E.T.A.” Another in Denver reportedly mentioned the Anarchist Black Cross and asked activists if they planned to engage in “terrorist activities.” Some agents claimed they were investigating the possibility that news trucks may be attacked by radicals, even though the FBI has not even stated whether the information the investigation is based on is credible or not.

Mission Accomplished: The Failings of the 9/11 Commission

Hudson Mohawk, 25.07.2004 15:59

While the report of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks in the US documents many of the failures of the US intelligence agencies leading up to the attacks of September 11, 2001, it leaves many basic questions unanswered. Many of the shortcomings of the report are directly attributable to the limited charge given to the Commission in its creation, and the significant conflicts of interest among the Commission members, all prominent politicians or members of the national security team. Congress and President Bush only reluctantly agreed to the Commission's creation due to the lobbying and moral pressure from family members of the 9/11 victims. Controlling the damage to the President, Congress, the foreign policy establishment and the two major parties was the overwhelming mandate of the Commission members.
