Kevin Benderman Faces July 28th Court Martial for Refusing to Fight in Iraq

San Francisco Bay Area, 26.07.2005 17:43

After serving in the military for eight years, including a tour of duty in Iraq, Kevin Benderman decided he could not participate in the Iraq war and occupation. He filed for conscientious objector status in December 2004. His application was denied, and on the weekend of Jan. 7th, 2005 Benderman refused to re-deploy to Iraq with his unit. He was charged with Desertion and Missing Movement by Design. On May 10th, 30 cities held public support events for Kevin Benderman and Navy refuser Pablo Paredes. On May 11th Kevin’s court martial judge overturned his hearing, citing a biased investigation, and ordered a new hearing. On Wednesday May 25th, the military filed a new court martial against Kevin, which has been scheduled for July 28th. Last Friday, a military judge threw out charges of larceny against Benderman that had stated that he had stolen $2,922 in unearned combat pay after his refusal to deploy to Iraq.

Courage to Resist is asking people to attend protests all over the country on July 28th to support military resistance. There will be an Open Mike Spoken Word-Poetry Read Out from 5pm to 8pm on Thursday at the Armed Forces Recruiting Center at 2116 Broadway, between 21st and 22nd Streets in Oakland. More info about the protest

TWO WEEKS IN JAIL! What's the crime?

San Diego, 26.07.2005 07:13

It has now been two weeks since David and Danae were sent to jail for standing up for their (and our) first amendment rights. Conditions are not great in the jails where they are being kept. David has been put in solitary confinement multiple times (mostly to punish him when there have been support rallies outside) and Danae is feeling sick and malnourished.

Please help raise money for their support and defense.
-Wednesday, July 27th - Vegan dinner, slideshow and the film "Office Space" at Voz Alta - 7pm, 1544 Broadway, $3-$10
-Saturday, July 30th - Garage Sale in Hillcrest (location TBA)

Attend the next support Rally - Thursday, July 28, 3pm at the Federal Courthouse on Front and Broadway. This rally coincides with the court case that could get David and Danae out of jail.

Marvelous Marvin Bush -- W's younger brother -- the Man Who Seems to be in All the Right Places

Portland, 26.07.2005 06:43

Let me say right from the get go that I'm not a conspiracy theorist by nature. As a journalist I like to see the facts line up solidly before I go with an accusation. At the same time, I also subscribe to Noam Chomsky's approach of looking at how the media and government deal with similar situations and issues when they involve the right and the left.

And on that basis, I have to marvel at how the corporate media, and the various government and quasi-government bodies that investigated or are investigating 9-11, have ignored curious things involving the Bush family.

The one that has me in shock right now is the information dug up and actually published (In the Prince George's Journal of Prince George, MD, and in Common Dreams) way back on Feb. 4, 2003, reporting that George Bush's obscure youngest brother Marvin (did you know he had a younger brother named Marvin?), was on the board of directors of a company called Securacom (now changed to Stratesec) that was responsible for providing "electronic security" to the World Trade Center right up to 9/11/2001.

Oregonian Ties Gays to Meth in Ill-Timed Front Page Article

Portland, 26.07.2005 06:43

In yet another attempt to insert its foot even further into its mouth, The Oregonian featured a article linking gay men, meth, and the spread of HIV on the front page of its Sunday edition. As if the gay community did not already have enough ammunition leveled against it in its fight to gain equal rights and civil unions, THE OREGONIAN provided even more ammunition to those who seek excuses to vilify and deny an entire population. It is questionable ammunition, at best.

Cynthia McKinney and the 9-11 hearings: A report-back

Portland, 26.07.2005 06:43

July 23, 2005 -- House Hearing on anniversary of 911 Report -- Representative Cynthia McKinney (D-GA) chaired a 9-hour hearing in the Cannon House Office Building on the anniversary of the release of the widely-criticized 911 Commission Report. Witnesses, including 911 family members, former intelligence officers, former diplomats, politicians, academicians, and legal experts were uniform in their contention that the 911 Commission was deeply flawed and its report failed to address why 911 occurred. A number of the Commission members had major conflicts of interest. The Executive Staff Director Phillip Zelikow is a long-time Republican activist with close ties to Condoleezza Rice and the right-wing funded Miller Institute. The Commission was also criticized for focusing more on increased authorities for intelligence and law enforcement and intelligence restructuring than on the events of 911 and past U.S. policy in the Middle East and South Asia that led up to the 911 attacks. read more >>

Portland, 25.07.2005 23:44

The Klamath River tribes are back in Scotland to try to convince Scottish Power to removal all the dams that they own in the Klamath River. Scotish Power owned Pacific Power the company that is responcible for the Klamath dams, which have devestated the Klamath Salmon runs, thus the Klamath Tribes health and way of life. While this is going on 100,000 fish just died above the Klamath dams.

Anarchists Reclaim Parks and Streets in Modesto

San Francisco Bay Area, 25.07.2005 20:13

Various anarchist and community groups/collectives converged on Tower Park in Modesto, to draw attention to police repression, urban sprawl, homelessness, and environmental racism. The event attracted around 100-150 people throughout the day, three meals were served as well as a Really Free Market, and a group of about 30-40 anarchists and anti-authoritarians from Modesto, Fresno, and the bay area also marched through the streets of Modesto in an un-permitted march that lasted close to an hour. Police managed to stop the march, and ticketed three people they considered "leaders". Read full report here.

Green Cross Dispensary Closed by City, Faces August 17th Hearing

San Francisco Bay Area, 25.07.2005 17:43

A public hearing was held on July 15th to discuss the status of the Green Cross medical marijuana dispensary in San Francisco. Neighbors of the Green Cross have complained about traffic violations, drug dealing, and lingering marijuana odors. They also question why dispensary patients don’t look outwardly sick. Neighbors have also complained that “this business does not benefit the neighborhood,” and does not “foster a spirit of local community.” The dispensary's building permit was revoked on June 10th.

The Zoning Administrator has agreed to continue to receive written comments about this issue until Tuesday, July 26th. The Green Cross has requested that patients, neighbors, and health care practitioners write letters to express support for maintaining the permit of The Green Cross. There is also a request that neighbors tell Bevan Dufty and his staff person Amanda Kahn that as their elected official, it was wrong for him to pursue revoking the permit of The Green Cross with the Zoning Administrator. Read the history of Noe Valley neighbors' conflict with the Green Cross, and find email information for the Zoning Administrator's office. Recent statement from the Green Cross

Holyoke Mall Now a Weekend No-Teenager Zone

Boston, 25.07.2005 16:13

Having spent a childhood hanging out, working at, loving, and hating local malls, it was with disbelief that this commentator read a piece in the July 13 edition of The Republican (Springfield, MA) that says that the Holyoke Mall at Ingleside has instituted an "MB18" ("Must Be 18") policy on Fridays and Saturdays from 4 p.m. to closing at the facility--after some "success" with similar rules at other malls owned by The Pyramid Companies. Any teenagers under 18 during those periods who are not accompanied by an adult, will be targetted by mall cops and escorted from the premises. Mall owners claim that racial profiling will not be involved in such targettings, but interestingly, Pyramid is instituting the policy in the relatively urban Holyoke mall frequented by that city's burgeoning Latino population, but not at the Hampshire Mall in more rural Hadley, MA, which it also owns. The Eastfield Mall in urban Springfield, MA, owned by Mountain Development Corp. of New Jersey, is planning to implement a similar policy.

The Love and Death of a San Diego Activist

San Diego, 25.07.2005 09:44

The Challenge of Steve McWilliams death, the courage of his life, gives balance to our struggle for freedom and justice. . . [read on]

Steve McWilliams committed suicide by overdose on July 12th. Read Steve's Last Words and commentary from his wife. He had been fighting federal charges for growing a small garden for the Shelter from the Storm Collective, in San Diego, was saddened over the Supreme Court decision in the Raich v. Ashcroft case. He was in a lot of pain, since he had been denied access to medical marijuana since his arrest in 2002. He had had to take powerful pharmaceutical opiates, anti-nausea, anti-migraine, etc. drugs in far higher amounts than when he had been able to medicate with marijuana. Apparently these medications were used in the overdose. Read more

Americans for Safe Access put out a call for people all over the US to organize vigils to honor Steve McWilliams for the patient, caregiver, and activist he was. On July 19th vigils were held in 16 or more cities. In San Francisco, a vigil was held at 12 noon at Civic Center Plaza. In Oakland, there was a vigil at 5:30pm before the City Council meeting. There was a vigil in Santa Rosa at 8pm.

Scottish Parliament to Consider Resolution to Support Klamath River Tribe's Campaign to Remove Dams

San Francisco Bay Area, 24.07.2005 20:43

Member of Scottish Parliament (MSP) Robin Harper announced on July 21st that he will be introducing a resolution to support the Hoopa, Karuk, Klamath, and Yurok Tribes' efforts to have Klamath River Dams removed, and the fishery restored. These are the three largest tribes in California and the largest in Oregon.
The Tribes are campaigning in Scotland to pressure multinational energy giant Scottish Power to remove dams which block over 350 miles of spawning habitat for salmon and degrade water quality. Since the building of the dams, Klamath salmon numbers have plummeted to less that 8% of their historic levels, devastating tribal cultures and local economies.

Elder Forest Activist Killed in Car Accident

San Francisco Bay Area, 24.07.2005 20:43

Yesterday was moving day. Joan Norman was moving into an apartment that she had endured two years on a waiting list for, in Brookings. She was killed in a car accident and her nephew, who had been in the car with her, survived with minor injuries. Joan Norman was interviewed by a Portland Indymedia reporter during the women's actions in the Biscuit earlier this year. Ms. Norman had been arrested on March 8th, and one of her statements in the interview was, "There are only 5% of the old growth trees left in the United States." She was arrested twice during the Biscuit campaign. At 72 years of age, she spent several weeks in jail, as she had refused bail on the moral grounds that she was not the law breaker. She was arrested more than 100 times in her more than 30 years of activism.

Activists were attending a Sisters of the Siskiyou benefit in Ashland when this news was relayed to them last night. Joan Norman had been their "number one Sister of the Siskiyous, dear friend, mentor and leader." The group decided to do what would have please Joan-- Biscuiteers will take lawn chairs and sit down in front of the McGuire timber sale. A new blockade in the Siskiyou Free State had just been started this week. The action will occur in a timeframe most respectful toward Joan's family. Details about Joan's memorial will be announced soon.
