Bay Area Protests Against Ringling Bros. Circus

San Francisco Bay Area, 22.08.2005 21:07

On Sunday, August 21st,, the last day of Ringling Brothers Circus appearance at the Oakland Coliseum, circus-goers were greeted with informative signs and leaflets, which detailed the mistreatment of circus animals, and suggested animal-free circus alternatives. Most people were receptive to this information, and some stated that they would never attend another animal circus, now that they were aware of the inherent cruelty. Animal liberation supporters will now turn their attention to upcoming Ringling Bros. appearances in San Jose from August 24th to 28th and San Francisco from August 31st to September 5th. Harvest Moon 2005: All the Work That Must be Done

Portland, 22.08.2005 20:37

Here in the City of Roses, in sea-warmed, mountain-sheltered Cascadia, it is the peak of Summer. The warm nights under this full moon are balmy enough for a tank-top. The sky slowly bleeds to black through a deep deep blue. Whistling through the tree-lined streets of pre-WWII neighborhoods on my bike -- hearing the crickets at one corner, human revelry at the next (it seems like everyone is out on their porch drinkin' a beer with friends tonight), running headlong into a cloud of flower scent, feeling the air rush by (or just rustle, if you're coasting slow), seeing the lights of the West Hills twinkling across the river as you sink into the happy hippie valley of inner Southeast -- it seems like Paradise. We are all riding a wave of time with its own momentum, whose force has already been generated, and which will play itself out only by crashing.

And in a way, it is. Gardens are overflowing with fresh vegetables, and the flood hasn't peaked yet. Though the temperature can rise into the nineties, the humidity is low, and the shade cool. Night-time swims in the Sandy River (or covert dips in condo hot-tubs), casual circles around backyard bonfires, and lazy post-bar walks mark the sky of the social calendar like comets; brief, flashing moments of joy with others, in an atmosphere of sultry pleasure.

The air is charged, under this moon, in this month, in Cascadia, and everything and everyone seems to feel it, in some way.

Stop the Lies, End the War, Save Our Climate

Madison, 22.08.2005 20:07

This essay suggests the Iraqi War, repugnant in its own right, also distracts from more immediate threats to our civilization – namely climate change and stopping religious based terrorism. It will be forcefully argued that the Iraqi war must end now – demanding immediate phased withdrawal and adoption of better strategies to fuel our society and stop murderous fanatics of all types.

Counter-Recruiters Attend "Soldier For a Day" Event in Medford

Rogue Valley, 22.08.2005 19:08

Peace activists and counter-recruiters from Applegate Citizens for Political Change (ACPC), Citizens for Peace & Justice (CPJ), and Peace House's Youth & Militarism program attended yesterday's "Soldier for a Day" event in Medford's Hawthorne Park. US Army recruiters transformed the park into a virtual boot camp, complete with an obstacle course, rock wall, and an armored Humvee, to offer local youth a chance to experience the military up close and personal. They were met by a group of counter-recruiters with an information table presenting alternatives to military enlistment and exposing the myths recruiters use to coerce young people to sign up.

As a dozen young people participated in simulated military drills, complete with camouflage face paint, fake guns, and grenades, activists spoke with community members about the realities of war and military recruitment. A large banner detailing the current number of US soldiers killed and wounded in Iraq presented a surreal backdrop to a group of small children playing with the Humvee's mounted gun.

Organic? The USDA’s Manipulation of Organic Products

DC, 22.08.2005 19:08

From Organized Coup: In this age of bio/chemical-terrorism that is enacted by several industries, like the fossil fuel industry, the pharmaceutical industry, and pertaining specifically to this article, the food industry, health conscious folks strive to maintain a healthy lifestyle by taking on certain lifestyles and practices. Health conscious people attempt to eliminate foods from their diet that are genetically modified, pesticide coated, refined, hormone ridden, etc., and instead, cough up the few extra bucks to get that product labeled "organic". But just when you thought it was safe to pick something up off the shelf to benefit your health, you may have to reconsider.

Activist to Reappear before Grand Jury

San Diego, 22.08.2005 19:08

Nicole Fink will reappear before federal grand jury on Tuesday, August 23 at 9 a.m. On August 17, she appeared in court for what she believed would be a contempt hearing for refusing to testify. She was surprised to find that there was no contempt hearing, and that the judge actually rescheduled her to appear before the grand jury. Again, she will refuse to testify. Migrant People awarded Ranch of Minutemen Supporter

San Diego, 22.08.2005 19:08

August 19, 2005 | DOUGLAS, Arizona -- Two immigrants illegally detained and assaulted when they crossed the United States border two years ago now own a 70-acre ranch of one of their attackers.

Fatima Leiva and Edwin Mancia have taken title to the ranch in connection with a Center lawsuit in which the pair claimed the ranch owner, Casey Nethercott, illegally detained and assaulted them.

VA reviewing 72,000 Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder claims

Portland, 22.08.2005 19:07

On August 11, the VA announced it would be reviewing 72,000 PTSD [Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder] claims filed between 1999 and 2004. The claims to be reviewed will be ones where full disability for PTSD was granted. This amounts to about one-third of all PTSD claims.

The VA's reasoning is that many PTSD claims were approved without proper medical evidence. What? Then why were they approved? Do you smell a rat here? How can a claim be approved if the veteran doesn't meet the standards set for that claim? This doesn't make any sense.

Fascists Don't Resign; They Must Be Removed

Portland, 22.08.2005 19:07

 • Liberals: get with the program or get out of the way.
"Why hasn't Karl Rove resigned?" seems to be the question written on the faces of all my liberal friends as they walk around Martha's Vineyard this summer in a conscious stupefied form of denial I have literally never seen before. "Why hasn't Karl Rove resigned?" Not even Bill and Hillary Clinton had the guts to press the public flesh as they always have in the streets Martha's Vineyard towns teaming with tourists hoping to meet the sexy prez and his smart wife the Senator from New York. No they were virtually non existent when it came time to raise money for Hillary's New York senatorial incumbency from the liberal elite's here this August. No they were hidden behind the gates of a billionaires estate here on Martha's Vineyard the world's largest gated community knowing full well the question if not spoken would be written on people's faces: "Why hasn't Karl Rove resigned?" and of course the follow-up question "Why the Fuck haven't you done anything about it?"

Report from a demonstration against animal "research"

Portland, 22.08.2005 19:07

I was on my way home on a bicycle on broadway, and passed through a nice lively demonstration headed up to OHSU. Went home to get my camera and joined them up at "pill hill"

Quite a few people came up the hill, and the Portland police were there for a while. OHSU's private security observed and took pictures from the enclosed walkway above the street and lurked in the emergency door. I had the distinct feeling of being "sized up" like a stranger wandering into a grimy college town sports bar at 1 in the morning.

Haitian Police responsible for more killings

Portland, 22.08.2005 19:07

Over the past two weeks, more than 15 people have been killed during police raids in Port-au-Prince, most were hacked to death by civilians wielding machetes who appear to have accompanied the police. What is known for sure is that the killings took place during or directly after police raids in the slums of Solino and Bel-Air. In Bel-Air, a Reuters cameraman filmed young men armed with machetes hacking apart an unarmed man who had just been shot by the police. The police did nothing to stop them declaring that the victim was a "bandit".

Activists Vs Nazis: Game tied, 1 to 1

Portland, 22.08.2005 19:07

This is really disgusting. This event, if corporate media is to be believed, appears to have happened with little opposition(if this was not the case, then by all means please write about what happened). This is the best publicity that they could possibly hope to recieve. It is like a beacon shining brightly to nazis getting their chicken-shit asses kicked everywhere else that Oregon and Portland are a nazi safehaven. Circle the fucking wagons folks, this means trouble!

The Vertical Range War: Fear and Transgression at the Hobson Horn

Portland, 22.08.2005 19:07

The Byzantine madness that passes for forest management in these the final troubled days of our short-lived empire is enough to drive a man to cynicism and strong drink. Those were the thoughts racing through my fevered brain as I barreled headlong down a dark gut tightening mountain road after having survived one more supply run to the hearty souls maintaining the line in defense of mother earth at the place the powers that be have named Hobson's Horn. It had been another night jitterbugs and jangles, you know, hugs and hellos tinged with fear and loathing. That kind of happy to be where you are, but unable to stop looking over your shoulder in the dark for the steps you're only hearing in your mind sort of night; that kind of night that seems to happen way to often when good Americans dare to raise their voices against the powerful and mad. Rumored threat and actual threat flowed like thick wine around the meeting place, mixing and mingling with the light of the nearly full moon. read more >>

Apologists for Iraqi War Going Bonkers

Portland, 22.08.2005 19:07

It is all in the realm of a collective madness! Apologists for the Iraqi War, a motley mob of sanctimonious Right Wing ranters, ranging from Ann Coulter, to Linda Chavez, to Robert Novak, and others, are going bonkers. (2) They are literally cracking up under the strain of seeing a war that they fully supported, which was based on a pack of deliberate lies, turning into a huge debacle. Their roles as shameless boosters for the Bush-Cheney Gang in the failing scheme known by its dubious Pentagon-imposed title, "Operation Iraqi Freedom," should forever darken their names and sully their reputations.

As their pro-War ship of bile continues to sink, these lackeys for the Establishment have targeted for abuse a prime symbol of the rising opposition in the country to the immoral conflict: Cindy Sheehan!

August 2005 dispatch from Jeff "Free" Luers

Portland, 22.08.2005 19:07

On a daily basis I defend my actions in interviews with journalists, arguments with guards, and debates with prisoners. When I am confronted by fascists for being an anarchist, when I am teased for being a "feminist" - or as I prefer, an egalitarian - or when I'm called a hippie and a tree hugger, I stand my ground and force them to accept it or do something about it. I'm not looking for a fight but I sure as hell ain't gonna back down from one.

Over the years, my debate skills have become so honed I can rattle off facts and numbers at the drop of the gloves. I know how bad things have gotten. I clip articles from dozens of sources. I keep notebooks full of information on climate change and U.S. tyranny. The knowledge physically makes me ill.

Abandoned for over 7 years...

United Kingdom, 22.08.2005 19:07

Unsatisfied with years of council inaction, an abandoned block of flats on Burns Street, Arboretum, has been occupied and turned into living spaces once again. The new homes, which are owned by the City Council had been left to rot for over 7 years.

The occupiers, who squatted the building early August, have been repairing damage and planting flowers in the garden with local residents. The council have given the new residents a 'notice to leave', stating they would obtain an eviction order through court, if they would not leave within 7 days. There is much support from local residents, as for them, the property has been an eyesore, attracting drug users and causing a general hazard.

Από πού πάνε για τη Σκωτία;

Athens, 22.08.2005 19:07

Athens Pride 2005

Athens, 22.08.2005 19:07

Kurdish refugee ends hunger strike

Athens, 22.08.2005 19:07

UPDATE 29.06.2005 Bahoz ended his hunger strike today. Read his statement

(türkçe) Zulkuf Murat Bora, more widely known as Bahoz, was forced to leave Turkey in 1995 due to his political beliefs and the repression he was facing by the Turkish state as a direct result of his struggle for the rights and liberty of the Kurdish people.

Bahoz was on hunger strike from the 17th of May to the 29th of June. The Greek Minister of Public Order promised to grant him asylum for one year due to “humanitarian reasons”, as long as he gave up his hunger strike and his right to claim political asylum.

At the same time another political asylum seeker -Yusuf Temiz- is being kept in a detention centre in Greece and is under the threat of imminent deportation in Turkey, where he faces death penalty.

Timeline of Solidarity events:

* June 24: occupation of the School of Theatre in Thessaloniki and solidarity action with Bahoz and Temiz in Edinburgh, Scotland

* June 23: demonstration in Athens and solidarity action in Patras.

* June 22: occupation of a radio station in Patras and press conference by the Committee of Constitutional Rights in Athens.

* June 21: 1,000 people demonstrate in Thessaloniki and Volos. Earlier on, occupation of the EU info centre in Thessaloniki

CCTV: The License was Renewed, the Unconstitutional Private Data Archiving Goes On

Athens, 22.08.2005 19:07

In 2005/08/02, the Greek Authority for the Protection of Private Data, intentionally neglecting the ongoing reactions and denouncements of the private data archiving by the police, renewed the license for the operation of the CCTV over the streets of Athens, until 2005/05/24, claiming once again that the cameras are legal as long as they are to be used for "traffic management issues", under the same prerequisites considered for such operation during the period 2004/11/25 - 2005/05/24.

During the last 8 months of the CCTV operation, the police, in co-operation with the so-called "independent" (and in this case "myopic") Authority, managed to let the Greek Police break every single prerequisite, while the Authority turned a blind eye to the electronic archiving of the people living and moving within the Attica basin; a fact that continued even during the "blank" period in between the expiration and the renewal of the license, as it is being proved by the provided photos.

Juridical "Laboratory" of Making-up Accusations and Guilt

Athens, 22.08.2005 19:07

Juridical "Laboratory" of Making-up Accusations and Guilt

Thursday 7th of July: G. Kalaitzidis and P. Karasarinis were arrested, having in possession broken pieces of police-shields, taken away after an attack to a riot-patrol wagon. A few days later, P. Aspiotis was arrested, too. Having exceeded the time limit of the "manifested guilt status" for 12hrs, the public prosecutor and the investigator overcharged them, by applying the harsh anti-terrorist law. Thus, through a procedure of juridical alchemy, the detainees stand as the scapegoats of 200 molotov blasts (specified as "explosive" instead of "inflammatory" material), as many as the total of the ones shot since 1998! The three detainees are kept in separate prisons (Koridalos, Amfissa, Nafplio).

Power to the Peaceful on September 10th

San Francisco Bay Area, 22.08.2005 19:07

On September 10th, 2005, the 7th Annual 911 Power to the Peaceful Festival (PTTP) will take place at Speedway Meadow in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. PTTP is an annual series of free, outdoor music and arts festivals with a social justice message bringing together international musicians, local artists and renowned speakers in a large festival atmosphere. Last year, over 50,000 people attended it. This year, the San Francisco Mayor’s Office will proclaim September 10th Power to the Peaceful Day at the festival. This year’s theme, Bring ‘Em Home, seeks to remind the public that the best way to support American troops abroad is to bring them home today.

This year, PTTP will include a skate ramp, a zero-waste program that will include bio-diesel vegetable fuel for power, an open-air art gallery, earth-conscious vendors, massage and yoga, a DJ dance floor, eco-village, kid’s zone, a food drive, and the SF Bike Coalition. Protests Against Ringling in Oakland

San Francisco Bay Area, 22.08.2005 19:07

On the last day of Ringling Brothers Circus appearance at the Oakland Coliseum, at least 20 activists greeted circus-goers coming and going with informative signs and leaflets. Hundreds of leaflets were passed out, some detailing the mistreatment of circus animals, some suggesting animal-free circus alternatives. Other than the occassional hot-head making a scene in front of his children or aggressive circus security details, most people were receptive and a few noted right away that they would never attend another animal circus once they became aware of the inherent cruelty. Report and pictures here.

photos from Cindys vigil, Newport oregon

Portland, 21.08.2005 13:07

140 people showed up in support of Cindys vigil. A group of dedicated (but unknown to myself) folks made wooden crosses , painted them white with the names of the dead on the front and the details of their deaths on the backs. They sink them in pails and we line the highway with them. Too many crosses and its just the tip. I think of all the Iraqi dead and I feel sick.

We stand there with our candles and flowers as 9 out of 10 cars go by wildly honking and waving in support. A man and his son with a Support Our Troops sticker drive slowly by handing out to go cups of coffee. I refuse one and the man says softly, come on, drink on for our boys. I hold back tears.

My friend takes out his harmonica and softly plays TAPS. Now I have to cry. [ read more | Nye Beach crosses ]

Baltimore Shows its Solidarity with Cindy Sheehan!

Baltimore, 21.08.2005 13:07

A rally in solidarity with Cindy Sheehan’s Crawford, Texas’s “Vigil” was held in Baltimore, MD, on August 17, 2005. Sharon Ceci of the “All Peoples Congress,” said, “Sheehan has touched a nerve with people across the country.” Renee Washington told me her daughter is in the US Army, and she prays that she doesn’t go to Iraq. “I didn’t raise her to kill anyone,” she said. Activist Virginia Rodino stated, “The Iraqi War was based on a pack of lies!”

Christopher Hitchens Smears Cindy Sheehan

Baltimore, 21.08.2005 13:07

Cindy Sheehan’s gallant anti-War vigil outside of the ranch of our half-demented President, George W. Bush, Jr., in Crawford Texas, is drawing massive support from around the country. It is also attracting pro-war snakes, like that former “Nation” magazine ranter, Christopher Hitchens. A Brit, who comes across as an insufferable Tory, he accused Sheehan of trying to “ventriloquize the dead” and of spouting off “sinister piffle.”
