The Health Department’s Dirty Little Secrets

Tennessee, 31.08.2005 20:08

In the article,”Chemicals: Turns out they are all around us, and consequently, in us” (Tennessean, August 23, 2005), Dr. Sanmi Areola, environmental toxicologist for the Metro Public Health Department claimed that the insecticide they spray for mosquitoes “is safe in the doses that Metro uses.” This is exactly what Dr. Areola and other Health Department officials told people who called them in 2003 and 2004 complaining of symptoms (burning skin, nausea, headaches, sore throats, respiratory problems) after the spray trucks were in their neighborhoods. No one was told that the symptoms they were calling about were listed right on the Material Safety Data Sheet!(Some of these people were sprayed on the streets in clear view of drivers so there was no doubt why these people felt ill.)

This is only part of a large movement against the MinuteMen, La Migra and the Border itself. Thursday night before the conference, La Raza Rights Coalition held a community forum to present their demands around these issues to legislators. Next weekend, Sept 2-4, BorderHack 2005 will be taking place in Tijuana. Also that weekend, on the 3rd, is a forum against the Minutemen in Chula Vista.

The Encuentro was planned as a space to strategize about how to create a world without borders, how to effectively challenge racism and how to put an end to the Minuteman Project. These strategies will be put into action from September 16-18th in a series of actions and a No Border Camp in Calexico.

Analyzing 'The Movement': In defense of polarization

Portland, 30.08.2005 21:37

At every public event I have attended for the last two years - all of them being related to opposing the war - I have invariably run into someone speaking with a thoughtful, sensitive, reasonable inflection about the need to "reach out to the other side" and help stop the polarization that is creeping into American society. And I have had to practice my best diplomacy to respond... because if I said what I want to say how I want to say it every time I hear this bullshit, I would look like a bully. People who adopt these "reasonable" tones are often skilled passive-aggressives who could easily make anyone who opposes them look like a bully. I suspect they also often have agendas.

Let me say now with no equivocation, I endorse polarization. Deep, wide, disruptive, knock-down-drag-out polarization. That's what social upheaval looks like, and upheaval is exactly what we need.

Mckenzie Watershed: Tree-sitters and ground support shot at by loggers

Portland, 30.08.2005 21:37

At 1pm on saturday 8/27 a large white suv with 3 or 4 loggers stopped just below the tree-sit. A man got out and unloaded 6 shots at the sit and 2 ground support people. Each shot was answered by war whoops and yells. As the ground support got closer to the fireing the shooter took off in the truck and fled, as support made loud chicken sounds in appreciation of their false bravado! 4 shell casings were recovered, steel jacketed 45 shells. read more >>

CHP to Honor Medical Marijuana Recommendations at Traffic Stops

San Francisco Bay Area, 30.08.2005 19:37

Americans for Safe Access reports that the California Highway Patrol (CHP) has abandoned its policy of arresting medical cannabis patients and confiscating their medicine. ASA had filed a lawsuit filed on behalf of six patients. On August 22nd, the CHP quietly changed its policy to officially recognize the rights of lawful patients under California’s Proposition 215.

The CHP has been responsible for over one fourth of all medical cannabis arrests and confiscations that are reported to ASA in California. It had been CHP policy to confiscate all medical cannabis found during traffic stops regardless of whether or not the patient had an ID card or a valid doctor’s recommendation.

ASA says, "The new change in CHP policy is a dramatic step towards protecting medical cannabis patients and caregivers in California. The new policy requires CHP officers to honor state-issued medical cannabis ID cards and letters of recommendations as proof of an individual’s status as a legal patient or primary caregiver... patients and caregivers (will have) vastly more freedom and peace of mind when carrying medication on California’s highways." ASA says that it will now pressure local police departments and county sheriffs to bring their policies into line with the CHP. ASA still plans to pursue the lawsuit, to be sure that patients and caregivers have legal recourse if the CHP fails to uphold the new policy. Read more

Actions Against the Borders

Athens, 30.08.2005 12:07

A series of demonstrations in the cities of Xanthi and Komotini, followed by a march towards the "refugees reception center" in Vena, took place in the frame of the "Actions Against the Borders". Outside the detention center, the protestors had a violent conflict with the police (videos 1 | 2),, while trying to get in. Finally, a group entered the place and managed to write down the names of the refugees, in order to submit asylum requests on behalf of them, while video-taping the place and the awful living conditions.

At the first day, during a demonstration across the Greek-Bulgarian borders, two vans were temporarily blocked on Bulgarian side. Finally, given the pressure by the demonstrators on the Greek side, they were allowed to cross the borders. in Bulgarian

August 29, 2005 One of the ever-repeating environmental scandals of Delaware is the "redevelopment" of contaminated sites in the City of Wilmington without really cleaning them up. The Minner and Baker administrations, fronting for developers, are married to the "cover it up and forget about it" approach.

Here is a notice about an important public hearing on a neglected brownfield in Wilmington DE.

Portland, 30.08.2005 04:39

Arturo Commando, host of the Arturo Commando Show on Portland Indymedia Web Radio, recently interviewed human rights activist Matthew McDaniel. The interviewed aired live on Sunday (8/28/05), the regular day of Commando's show.

McDaniel spoke at length on his human rights activism in Southeast Asia, specifically with the Akha tribe. They also talked about the United States involvement in Southeast Asia, the US funded drug war, and the vast measures the United States is employing to keep McDaniel and his wife out of the United States. The interview is 45 minutes long and available for download and for streaming. It is a great introduction to the horrors that exist in SE Asia and provides insight on how we can help bring justice to SE Asia.

Protest Bush in San Diego

San Diego, 30.08.2005 00:37

Two events are planned for Bush's visit to San Diego:

Candlelight Vigil: President Bush, Our loved ones are dying in an unjust war. WHY?
Monday Evening, August 29, 2005 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM
WHERE: On Coronado Island along Ocean Blvd. Near Flora Ave and Rh Dana Place. (Directions: Take Coronado Bridge to Orange Ave. Left on Orange Ave. to Rh Dana Place. Right on Rh Dana Place - becomes Ocean Blvd.. Vigil will be on Ocean Blvd. along the beach.) No parking will be permitted along Ocean Blvd. on Monday and Tuesday. Carpool if you can and park as near the Hotel Del as you can.

Demonstration at NAS NORTH ISLAND MAIN GATE on Alameda. Main Gate on Alameda, Coronado, Tuesday, August 30, 6 a.m. Gates will open at 6:00 a.m. for the 10,000 "invited guests" and the ceremony will take place at 8:00 a.m. True to form, this will be a harbor-side event so protestors can be kept far from this location. However, the road leading to North Island in Coronado would be a good protest location. Since parking in Coronado is scarce and parking laws are enforced, the North County Coalition for Peace and Justice will be using public transportation to get there. Directions from North County are below; San Diego people should check with the bus company to figure out best route for themselves to arrive at demonstration location: NAS NORTH ISLAND MAIN GATE on Alameda.

Sill in Lawton, OK, to protest the imprisonment of 3 soldiers who refused to fight in Iraq for the sake of conscience: Blake LeMoine, Dale Bartell and Neil Quentin Lucas. Participants included James Branum and Tre Runne of the Oklahoma Committee for Conscientious Objectors; Mark Faulk (of FaulkingTruth.com), a student from Putnam City High school (I forgot her name), Huti Reynolds & Jean McMahon (both of the Muskogee chapter of Code Pink). We began the vigil about 200 yards from the gate (positioning ourself at a stop light where folks would have time to read our signs), but later moved north to about 50 yards from the gate (as close as we felt safe getting without crossing the property line for the military base). The response from those passing by was mixed, but was more positive than negative. One motorist said that she was a veteran and her daugther is overseas right now in the service, but she is glad we are there for them. Another woman stopped to talk to us. She said her husband had just been sent on a second tour to Iraq against his will, and she was very concerned for him. (we referred her to the GI Rights Hotline and to OCCO for conversation about his situation) Many other motorists were not supportive. One woman drove by two times to flip us off. One person yelled at us “Support the President!” and most humorous of all was the young man who yelled to us “Peace is for pussies!” (which we later realized was an unintended compliment, since the female vagina is one of the human body’s strongest organs) All in all we felt it was a good day. We only wished that we could communicate to Blake, Dale & Neil in person, to tell them that we supported in their stand. Tensions Between The US And Venezuela

San Francisco Bay Area, 29.08.2005 18:07

8/28/2005: Clashes have broken out in the streets of Caracas between supporters and opponents of President Hugo Chávez. Tensions have been building between the US and Venezuela since Chávez rescinded the rights of US DEA to operate in Venezuela on August 12th, claiming that they were involved in spying and themselves engaged in drug trafficing. On August 23rd, Christian Coalition leader Pat Robertson used his nationally syndicated show the 700 Club to call for Chavez's assasination. Chavez responded to the threat by temporarily suspending permits for foreign missionaries and offering to provide the poor in the US with cheaper gasoline. While a US aircraft carrier is stationed off the coast, any US attempt to overthrow Chavez may have been undermined by the widespread condemnation of Robertson's statement.
