Hurricane Katrina and Amerikkkan Apartheid

Portland, 09.09.2005 07:37

Hurricane Katrina and Amerikkkan Apartheid The message is clear; Blacks loot. whites courageously find supplies. Two cities. Only in amerikkka. whitey had the way and the means to get out. The poor and Black did not. Without a car or money for gas or public transportation, where the fuck are you going to go? FEMA and Katrina: REX-84 Revisited "The disaster that struck New Orleans and the southern Gulf Coast has given rise to the largest military mobilization in modern history on US soil. Nearly 65,000 US military personnel are now deployed in disaster area, transforming the devastated port city into a war zone..."
Katrina and White America's Denial ou blessed your chimichanga in the name of Jesus Christ, and then proceeded to spend the better part of your meal--and mine, since I was too near your table to avoid hearing every word--morally scolding the people of that devastated city, heaping scorn on them for not heeding the warnings to leave before disaster struck... They lied to us to get us to move Before we were close enough to speak, they began firing their weapons over our heads. This sent the crowd fleeing in various directions. As the crowd scattered and dissipated, a few of us inched forward and managed to engage some of the sheriffs in conversation. ... [They] informed us there were no buses waiting. The commander had lied to us to get us to move.
Dress rehearsal for martial law? [O]n Friday, Bush administration officials sent Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco a legal document demanding that she sign over control of the state's National Guard as well as state and local police units. The memo sought their federalization under the Insurrection Act, a statute that allows the president to take control of state militias under conditions in which state governments themselves are unable to "suppress rebellion." Cheney Live on CNN told to 'Go F--k Yourself' When a usually polite Southerner tells the Vice-President of the United States "Fuck You", live on national TV, in MISSISSIPPI of all places, you know the Bush Machine is in deep shit. Also dug how Cheney and his wife gave Sheppard Smith the evil eye when he mentioned Nancy Pelosi's rejection of their fixed "commission".
what really happened in new orleans? The struggle continues, and we must not allow them to get away with their evil plans. It would be a social, architectural, and cultural crime to let Bush destroy New Orleans. New Orleans needs to be brought back to life in its existing buildings, most of which can be saved, and with its former inhabitants. Katrina's Silver Lining If there is any silver lining to the smoke-laced cloud that is hanging over the toxic cesspool and mass graveyard that used to be New Orleans, it is the just deserts that are coming to the millions of people who put the Bush Administration and the lunatic right in power in Washington.

No Detentions, No Deportations

United Kingdom, 09.09.2005 01:07

The 28th August saw the Government's plans come into being that allows for the forced deportation of Iraqi Kurds to Iraq, based on the claim that it is now safe for return.

Following a meeting of local Kurdish and Yemeni communities, protests against this policy of forced deportations were organised in Sheffield by the Campaign Against Detention and Deportation of Iraqis.

It was agreed at the meeting to hold demonstrations every Saturday at 2pm in the Peace Gardens. Over 100 people turned out for the first demonstration on August 27th.

The Sheffield No Borders group is hosting a film night and benefit gig on Friday 9th September. A film about the European joint efforts to create a system of detention centres and the resistance against it will be shown, along with clips from no border actions in Scotland at the G8 summit this summer. Funds raised will go to support the Magical Mystery Tour action which seeks to highlight to people in Sheffield the government agencies and private companies involved with (and profiteering from) asylum seekers and migrants, and their subsequent detention and deportation.

Katrina's Power Shows It's Time to Take Global Warming Seriously

Madison, 09.09.2005 00:07

The decimation Hurricane Katrina has brought to Louisiana, Mississippi and parts of Alabama has sparked increasing scientific concerns about the threat of global warming. According to the National Climate Data System, Hurricane Katrina was one of the strongest storms to impact the coast of the United States during the last 100 years. Less than a month before Katrina reached the top level of the Saffir-Simpson scale (Category 5), the prestigious British journal "Nature" published an article by a professor of atmospheric science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, showing evidence that hurricanes and typhoons have intensified in the recent years as global warming has continued. But as renown and respected author Bill McKibbens writes, "so far the U.S. has done exactly nothing even to try to slow the progress of climate change". Maybe it's time to take another look at this picture?

Roberts Avenue Beautification Project Sparks Community Dialogue

Tennessee, 08.09.2005 22:08

In a spirited public meeting last Thursday, residents of Roberts Ave in East Nashville gathered at the Eastwood Church to talk about what they were going to do about their street. Veronica Frazier of Metro Beautification, Traffic Engineer Ali Afis, Metro Councilman Mike Jameson and East Nashville Green Party Community Activist John van derHarst attended the meeting along with several residents of Roberts Ave who are concerned about what is happening on their street. The concerns were sparked by the activities of van derHarst, a member of the East Nashville Green Party, who has been working on beautifying his street for the past nineteen years. About a year ago, van derHarst began constructing stone planters on the median of his street, made of stone he had salvaged from garbage and rubble piles in East Nashville. The planters, which van derHarst has been working on for over a year, became the subject of controversy last month when metro public works threatened to tear them down, in the face of overwhelming support for preserving them coming from his neighborhood.

San Diego, 08.09.2005 18:37

We call on people everywhere to converge on the San Diego/Tijuana region and the Mexicali/Calexico region of the Mexico/US border in order to stop the vigilante operation being planned there by the Friends of the Border Patrol, beginning on September 16th. We also call on those who cannot travel to these areas to organize solidarity actions in their home towns rejecting the Minutemen, Borders and the racist ideologies that Borders are built on.

When the list becomes active, people will be able to post requests for skills they need or would like to learn, and offers of skills they could teach to other people. Almost any skill could be shared. Just a few examples could be: speaking a language, playing an instrument, gardening, doing homework, using computers. Everybody knows how to do something which someone else would like to learn. Skill sharing can take up as much or as little of your time as you choose. Santa Cruz Resident Aids Katrina Survivors

Santa Cruz, CA, 08.09.2005 14:38

Hurricane Katrina swept through the Gulf Coast region, August 29 leaving a path of death and destruction. With the eyes of the world focussed squarely on the relief efforts there, we are hearing alot of stories about the inadequate response of the federal government. Rather than complain, some people have decided to take matters into there own hands, and provide some measure of relief to whoever they can. One such person is Santa Cruz resident Gary McGlaughlin, a construction contractor who got in touch with some old friends in Tennesee working with the group Plenty International.

Portland, 08.09.2005 07:37

I just got back to Portland from the Sten timber sale treesit east of Eugene, and the firing of live ammunition that went on last weekend hasn't stopped. Pickups full of men wearing logging caps keep creeping by the site, shouting, harassing, and occasionally firing. Although they haven't aimed directly at the treesitters since last weekend, the danger is still high, and support is needed!

I am including audio interviews with two of the forest activists.

Report back from last night's African American Community Response Training Session

Portland, 07.09.2005 21:38

I attended a training session to be on the welcome committee for the soon to be arriving New Orleans hurricane survivors. The project has been named by Portland as "Operation Welcome Oregon". Hosted and facilitated by Portland's African American community in the Emmanuel Temple Church, they tried to give out a lot of information, collect volunteer's contact info and dispel rumors. The facilitators said that they approached the Red Cross and said you need Portland's African American community to be involved in this project.

The Red Cross and Multnomah County reps and other community leaders were around to help and also gave presentations. We saw the "Welcome to Portland" slide show that the survivors will be seeing courtesy of Red Cross, talks from physical and mental health professionals as to what to expect and what to look for from the survivors. They will be arriving by plane through the PDX Airport. There is no information when or how many individuals will be arriving, only that it will not be more than 1000 people in Portland.

Massachusetts is currently the only state that grants civil marriage licenses to same-sex couples. This was the result of a decision by the state's highest court. Vermont and Connecticut provide civil unions for same-sex couples, and California and New Jersey presently offer domestic partnerships. This victory in California, the state with the largest numbers of same-sex couples in the country, is anticipated to have a positive influence on the future of marriage equality nationwide.

Direct Action to Support Youth Who Find Alternatives to Military

San Francisco Bay Area, 07.09.2005 06:07

The People Power Can End the War Collective is calling for a September 23rd demonstration. At 4pm there will be a Speak Out with performances at the Chevron Gas Station at Telegraph Ave. and Grand Ave. in Oakland, followed by a march to the Armed Forces Recruiting Center at 2116 Broadway. The latter part of the demonstration will include direct action.

Organizers say, "This action supports people power campaigns that are building to stop the Iraq war and occupation, and policies of empire behind it. If the government won’t listen to the people, we will stop the war ourselves by organizing campaigns to remove the pillars of support on which the war depends; troops, corporate profiteers and corporate media. We're working to uproot the system behind the war, to replace racism and poverty with economic and racial justice!"

A Training for Nonviolent Direct Action/People Power Strategy to Stop the War will be held on Saturday September 10th at Power to the Peaceful, Speedway Meadow, Golden Gate Park, SF: 12 noon and 2pm. There will also be trainings on Sunday September 18th in the evening, and Thursday September 22nd, at 6pm, location tba. Artmaking for the Action (with Art in Action) will take place on Saturday September 10th at Power to the Peaceful. Read more
