Tree-sitter hit by arrow at Sten Tree-sit

Portland, 14.09.2005 02:38

On saturday september 10th the Sten tree-sit in the Mckenzie Watershed was again attacked by hostiles, this time by a man armed with a high-powered compound bow shooting tri-tipped hunting arrows. One tree-sitter was hit and cut by an arrow and his 5 gallon water jug ended up with an arrow through it. Everyone is OK, other than rattled nerves and the trees are still occupied. More updates on this situation will be forthcoming soon.

One commenter adds: "The would-be murderer comes out on the weekends, and this weekend is fast approaching. We need to mobilize as many supporters as possible for the well-being of all." [More...]

Two Men Found Guilty in Murder of Gwen Araujo

San Francisco Bay Area, 14.09.2005 02:07

A Hayward jury came back from deliberations on September 12th with convictions against Michael Magidson and Jose Merel in the re-trial for their roles in the murder of transgendered Newark teenager Gwen Araujo. (Photos of 9/12 Press Conference) The two men were found guilty of second degree murder in the 2002 killing. The jury was unable to reach a verdict on a third defendant, Jason Cazares. Attorneys for the three defendants moved away from the unified front used last year, and used "transgender panic" defenses less, as well. The jury did not convict the men of committing a hate crime. Prosecutors will announce their decision on a third trial for Cazares on November 18th. Magidson will be sentenced on January 6th, and Merel’s sentencing date will be set on October 28th.

Trans advocates and progressive and queer organizations have applauded the Alameda County District Attorney's office for prosecuting this case twice. It is believed that the successful prosecution and conviction of two of her killers will help to reduce the risk of further violence against transgendered people both in the East Bay, and all over the country. It will now be up to the Alameda County District Attorney to decide whether to pursue a third trial against Jason Cazares.

Tennessee Immigrants Respond to Katrina

Tennessee, 14.09.2005 00:09

Tennessee immigrants responded to Hurricane Katrina with a Labor Day "radio-thon" organized by Nashville Latino radio stations "La Sabrosita" (WMGC810am) and "Latina Etereo" (WDKA 1200am), as well as several other Latino businesses and community organizations. In one day, Hispanic families donated more than $8000 dollars, as well as tons of food and clothing.

Algiers New Orleans: Where Common Ground Is Found

Portland, 13.09.2005 20:38

Traveling by rental car we arrived in New Orleans around 3:30 P.M. central standard time. On the approach to the city it was a clear day. Damage was everywhere. Tree's were in twisted mangled messes along the roads. Roof tops off of gas stations had been completely ripped off in some places. Street signs were bent backward from the winds and hard to make out, and in some cases they just didn't exist. Gas stations are working as few as ten miles away. All the roads from what I saw were clear and traffic (yes there is traffic) was flowing.

On the way in almost all of the off ramps were blocked in one form or another. Check points are setup all over the place with military units dress in full camouflage with M-16's were walking around in full view.

Our main concern was to get to Malik Rahim's (a great guy and former Black Panther). A local resident of New Orleans in Algiers. There is a curfew from 6:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. in place and is being enforced. Our main concern was to get from where we were to Malik's. After about fifteen minutes we found the house and were welcomed warmly to a very active household of independent journalists, bloggers, community organizers, doctors, nurses, people with vans bringing food and water, you name it.

Two Men Found Guilty in Murder of Gwen Araujo

San Francisco Bay Area, 13.09.2005 20:37

Many members of the transgender community are resting easier, as a Hayward, CA jury came back from deliberations on September 12th with convictions against Michael Magidson and Jose Merel in the re-trial for their roles in the murder of transgendered Newark teenager Gwen Araujo, whom the men knew as Lida. (Photos of 9/12 Press Conference) The two men were found guilty of second degree murder in the 2002 killing. The jury was unable to reach a verdict on the third man, Jason Cazares. The decision followed a re-trial that starkly contrasted with the 2004 trial. As attorneys for the three defendants moved away from the unified front used last year, their overall reliance on "transgender panic" tactics subsided as well. The jury did not commit the men of committing a hate crime. Prosecutors will announce their decision on a third trial for Cazares on November 18th. Magidson will be sentenced on January 6th, and Merel’s sentencing date will be set on October 28th.

US peace activist detained under terrorist charges in Australia! Call the Australian Embassy!

Portland, 13.09.2005 17:38

September 10, 2005

Scott Parkin, a US peace activist from Houston, Texas, has been
detained by police in Australia without formally being charged with any crime and
threatened with deportation. His reasons for being held are ambiguous
but his legal advisor has confirmed that among the reasons given for his
detainment is that Scott has been identified as a terror threat to
Australian national security. Scott is in no way a terrorist threat; he
is a political activist, plain and simple, and is being detained because
of his political activism.

Bristol 14 Sept - Solidarity Vigil Against Arms Fair

At the last Bristol Dissent meet it was noted a number of Bristolians were travelling to protests against DSEi ( more info http://www.dsei.org ), and that there was a call for a 'solidarity vigil' in Bristol to coincide with the main day of protest - 14 September. That vigil was set to occur at the same time as the historic 'Bristol peace vigil', namely 5pm, opposite the Hippodrome, St Augustines Parade, central Bristol. There has not been much (any?) publicity for such a vigil, nor any central organiser...but it would be good to see it happen and publicise both the protests and the arms fair's existence (no doubt the London protests may be on the news that day). So spare an hour to make your opposition heard, bring a banner, placard, whatever. There is some anti-DSEi publicity available at Kebele (14 Robertson Rd, Easton, BS5) that could be taken and handed out.

Frances Newton Faces September 14th Execution Date in Texas

San Francisco Bay Area, 13.09.2005 02:07

The state of Texas is scheduled to execute Frances Newton on September 14th. She was convicted of the 1988 murder of her husband and two children. Newton's original state-appointed attorney was Ron Mock, who has lost so many capital cases that he is known as "death row Mock." He has never won an acquittal in a capital case. Mock is the attorney who is notorious for having fallen asleep in court while defending the late Shaka Sankofa In a recent interview, Assistant DA Roe Wilson contradicted a key piece of evidence that led to Newton's conviction- there seems to have been a second gun that was never tested in a crime lab. Newton would be the first African American woman executed by Texas since the Civil War. Her December 1st, 2004. The ACLU of Texas has written a letter asking that she be given clemency and upporters say the courts should grant Frances Newton another trial based on new evidence.
The International Action Center is asking for people to write letters to Texas Governor Rick Perry, Attorney General Greg Abbott, President Bush, Congressional leaders and Senators and Representatives from Texas and the Texas State Legislature, the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles, and other authorities, to demand that Frances' execution be stopped. WHY I'LL VOTE "NO" on the Gasoline Tax#723

THE OKLAHOMA LEGISLATURE also passed a tax cut benefitting primarily the rich ... so many programs in the public interest have had to be cut, and there's no cash to fix our roads and bridges. "Oops, no money." NOW, STATES LIKE OKLAHOMA are having to pass regressive taxes including sales taxes and "lotteries" to pay for crucial needs "in the common good & general welfare" (roads, schools) ... actually shifting taxes OFF the backs of the rich and ONTO the backs of working and poor citizens. THIS IS WHAT WE ARE BEING ASKED TO VOTE FOR. NO, THANKS. INCIDENTALLY -- The Oklahoma Legislature has budgeted money for road and bridge repair in the past, only to shift the allocated resources to other needs. "Oops, no money." BEND OVER. HERE THEY COME AGAIN. CONGRESS AND THE OKLAHOMA LEGISLATURE are planning more TAX CUTS FOR THE RICH .... attacking the Estate Tax which they love to call the "death tax." This is just one more tax shift benefitting America's rich ....... at a time when incomes are rising ONLY for the wealthiest 5% of Americans, and are stagnant or falling for 95% of Americans. (Here's a plan: Let's vote for MORE TAXES on working and poor Oklahomans, while silently standing by while the Legislature and Congress eliminate the ESTATE TAX, giving more tax relief to the wealthiest 2%) As long as Oklahomans -- and all Americans -- participate in TAX SHIFTS OFF THE RICH and onto working and poor families, our "conservative" elected officials will happily continue to do it to us, while Rush Limbaugh, Shawn Hannity, Glenn Beck, and Pat Robertson use the public airwaves to explain to us why it's a good deal for us. They are real "family values" Americans. ***************************************** OKLAHOMA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION - ODOT - PURSUES A STUPID AND WASTEFUL HIGHWAY PLAN: The "ODOT" plan to build another Interstate Highway through the middle of Oklahoma City (parallel to the current overhead I-40) is horribly misguided and ill-timed .... a catastrophic misuse of public monies, supporting TRUCKING and discouraging RAILROADS at a time when railroads will be most needed to save energy and reduce hydrocarbon gas production. US Representative Ernest Istook on the Transportation Committee is always excited to build new highways which pave over existing railroad lines. It's a huge boondoggle benefitting the TRUCKING & PETROLEUM industries. 1. It will pave downtown Union Train Station and four important railroad lines which WILL BE NEEDED to make Oklahoma City a railroad hub for the nation whenrailroads "return" (as they will, because shipping freight by rail uses only 5% of the energy per-ton used to ship by 18-wheel tractor-trailer rigs.) 2. EACH HEAVY TRUCK does as much damage to overhead highways as 9,600 automobiles. GET THEM OFF THE OVERHEADS. HEAVY TRUCKS could be routed around Oklahoma City on the south or north loops, which would make the existing overhead I-40 fixable. Truckless, it would last indefinitely. 3. SUPPORT RAILS - The rails which ODOT's plan will pave will be needed for an Oklahoma City "light rail" or trolley public transportation system. The rails and Train Station will be needed for AMERICA's future shipping needs. YOU BET I'M ANGRY!!! Nathaniel Batchelder www.peacehouseok.org The Peace House 2912 N. Body Count Treaty

Tennessee, 12.09.2005 22:09

We are all aware that the US government enters into treaties with other nations on a regular basis. This has been a normal function of government since our founding. Article 6 paragraph 2 of the constitution reads, “all Treaties …shall be the supreme Law of the Land.” Through the years, that has been interpreted to mean that treaties are on an equal footing to congressional laws. In other words, the US government can not enter into a treaty that would violate your right of free speech guaranteed in the First Amendment. The constitution is superior to laws or treaties.

AUDIO: Splitting the Sky and Big Man at Reed College

Portland, 12.09.2005 17:38

I attended the 34th anniversary of the Attica rebellion and massacre, on September 9th at Reed College, where Splitting the Sky spoke. I recorded the audio of Splitting the Sky, and Black Panther Elbert "Big Man" Howard, who was also at Attica to help negotiate a settlement, speaking of their experiences at Attica. Over all it was an excellent event and I applaud the organizers for putting this togeher.

Big Man had set the stage of the Attica experience that night by giving a discriptive feeling of what he saw and felt when he walked inside the prison long ago. He spoke briefly but the experience he shared was a good intro into the past and reflection of the time. Then Splitting the Sky came on and socked you in the stomach with his experience of what happened at Attica. If you have never heard this man speak then you don't know what your missing. He discribes a vivid reality of his experience and delievers it with such a passion that your in shock. In all seriousness it was an amazing speech that touched on current events and brought a energy to those who attended. I remember talking with several people afterward and we all agreed that after the speech we felt inspired to smash the state. It was an inspiration to bring change that bordered on rioting because of past and present injustices of the government.

I just got back from a FEMA Detainment Camp

Boston, 12.09.2005 16:08

[Re-posted from AboveTopSecret.com with permission from the Editors] I'm extremely depressed to report that things seem to only be getting sadder concerning the people so devastatingly affected by Katrina last week. Two car loads of us headed over to Falls Creek, a youth camp for Southern Baptist churches in Oklahoma that agreed to have its facilities used to house Louisiana refugees. I'm afraid the camp is not going to be used as the kind people of the churches who own the cabins believe it was going to be used. Jesse Jackson was right when he said "refugees" was not the appropriate word for the poor souls dislocated due to Katrina. But he was wrong about why it is not appropriate. It's not appropriate because they are detainees, not refugees.

Anti-War Activity and Events in Ireland

Ireland, 12.09.2005 15:07

An Indymedia Editor presents: A short analysis of ongoing anti-war activity in Ireland within the context of global events including some of the most prominent upcoming events. One Mother's Quest For Justice “If my son had died for a noble cause, I would be just as heartbroken...I would have cried just as many tears. A noble and just cause would be some wee consolation for my boy’s death.” "Janey mac" sez yer man Wag "they call that a short analysis? There's a quare load of material to shift through here boy, I'm off to catch d'wedder." While Hurricane Katrina recently devastated the lives and livelihood of many US citizens, we approach the anniversary of another disaster where many other Americans also lost their lives. Though some people are saying that the recent disaster is worse than that of September 11th, the events of that day have had a far greater impact than that of those whose lives were lost on the day itself. Indeed, four years later many lives are still being destroyed as an indirect result of what happened on that day. The barbaric attack on the World Trade Centre provided the neo-conservative Bush administration with the excuse they wanted to invade and occupy other countries resulting in the maimimg, torture and death of civilians from those countries. Another side-effect of the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan is that the maximum overseas deployment time of the National Guardsmen was increased from 6 months to 24 months so that while the troops are killing and dieing for the interests of the neocons, other US citizens feel that they are more urgently needed back home. However, it's not only US soldiers and the victims of US state violence that are losing their lives in the open-ended "War on Terror" which was declared in the aftermath of September 11th. Many other allies of the US have joined with them in their imperialist ventures. The most notable of these is the United Kingdom who has since the Second World War enjoyed a "special relationship" with the US. Tony Blair has been an ardent supporter of the "War on Terror" but it's not Blair or those who supported the decision to invade Afghanistan and Iraq who are dying in the conflict. It's others such as Glaswegian, Gordon Gentle who was killed in June 2004 by a roadside bomb in Basra, Iraq. Rose Gentle, the mother of Gordon has become a vocal opponent of New Labour's decision to go to war. She is one of many bereaved families of dead soldiers struggling to secure an independent inquiry into the legality of the 2003 attack on Iraq. She spoke at the recent G8 Alternatives events in Scotland against the actions of the leaders of the G8 countries and last year, she stood for election as part of a campaign to bring British troops home from Iraq. Tonight (Thursday 8th September), Rose will speak at a public meeting organised by the Dublin Catholic Worker Movement in Wynn's Hotel on Abbey St. The post 2001 increase in naked aggression from the American Empire has been matched by greater anti-war sentiment from many people who felt that this new level of violence was both unjust and immoral. In her opinion piece on bereaved mothers such as Rose Gentle, Deirdre Clancy briefly analyses the rise and fall of anti-war activity in Ireland over the past four years. This analysis is further developed in a comment by another Indymedia Ireland contributor. However, despite the relative lack of numbers (compared to early 2003), anti-war activity is ongoing and events continue to be organised by committed groups of activists. Benefit gigs, public meetings, pub quizzes and other anti-war events are organised regularly by groups around the country. Some of the most recent and current of these events are: Ongoing anti-war actions include weekly vigils on Dublin streets by the Dublin Catholic Workers including the Pit-Stop Ploughshares who will face trial in October for their disarmament of a US military plane at Shannon airport in February 2003. The anniversary of September 11th will be marked by anti-war campaigners holding a candlelight vigil at the GPO to commemorate "those who died in New York, London Bali etc and the so called 'War on Terror' in Iraq and Afganistan". Finally, towards the end of the month, a demonstration at Shannon airport has been organised on the 24th September by a number of anti-war groups and peace campaigners to protest "against the Irish government for its complicity in the killing of innocent people". Shannon Airport is a civilian airport which the Irish government has effectively handed over to the US to use as a pit-stop in the conduct of its military campaigns in the Middle East. There is also strong evidence that along with soldiers and munitions, torture victims are also being transported via the aiport. On the same afternoon, the Peace and Neutrality Alliance will also hold a vigil at the American Embassy for those not travelling down to Shannon. http://www.indymedia.ie/attachments/sep2005/rosegentle.jpg

Dänische Polizei räumt Wagenburg in Christiania, Kopenhagen

Germany, 12.09.2005 14:37

The Houston Astrodome: Do You Know What Is Really Happening?

Portland, 12.09.2005 12:37

It turns out that the city is talking about closing down all the shelters in the city this week to get people out and find them jobs. I don't know how people are going to find jobs without a place to stay, let alone no address.

More and more people are leaving the Astrodome. Family members are not being allowed in to find other family members. If your outside the gates from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. you are not allowed back in if you are a survivor. You have to wait till 5 a.m. to get back inside.

There were about 8,000 people left in the Astrodome when I was last there, and shinking. They were moving everyone to another building right across from the Astrodome last time I checked. There are free one-way tickets by plane to anywhere any survivor wants to go, all you gotta do is ask.

One of the problems though is that you have to ask if you want to get anything. There are currently not enough people going to the dome to volunteer. Much of the elderly are being overlooked as they sit in wheel chairs in the dome, and will soil themselves because there is nobody to help take them to the bathroom.

US Peace Activist to be Deported

Grand Jury Grinds On

San Diego, 11.09.2005 20:07

After over 40 days in jail for refusing to cooperate with an investigation into a public forum, San Diego activists are now, and will continue to stand by their beliefs. They need your support in the form of letters, donations and books more than ever.

The following statement from David Agranoff was recently posted to San Diego Indymedia: In the wake of Recent Events I wanted to issue a statement for all of MY SUPPORTERS here in SAN DIEGO, Nationally and Yes WORLDWIDE. Many of you have sent wonderful letters, money and books. Locally you have carried signs and SHOWN UP faithfully to court dates and fundraisers. I can honestly say that it TOUCHES ME DEEPLY.

Since our Dago Activist Community came under attack there have been ups and downs in terms of betrayals and solidarity. MOST of you have stood strong to resist this GRAND JURY REPRESSION. At this point I have already SPENT 40 DAYS IN PRISON TO DEFEND the ACTIVIST COMMUNITY. Some of you were at Rod's Lecture or maybe just friends were there. I am doing OK living in this PRISON the system CAN NOT break me.

ALL I ASK, you don't have to protest, you don't have to write a letter, ALL I ASK is you READ this essay from beginning to end. I am not asking for much. [Complete Call for Solidarity]

Police shoot and kill obviously unarmed man near Sandy

Portland, 11.09.2005 17:37

A 27 year old man who appeared to be mentally disturbed was driving erratically out near Bluff road. He allegedly rear-ended someone and then fled. At some point, either before or after this incident, he removed his clothes. The police were called to respond, which they did in their customary manner. After tazing him a couple of times, and determining it wasn't having the desired effect, they shot him.

The man, 27 year old Fouad Kaady, was on foot at the time of the killing. He appeared to be having some sort of psychotic breakdown, and according to the public information officer (PIO), was "out of control." Two officers armed with state-of-the-art "less lethal" weapons and all the academy training tax dollars can buy, ultimately decided that he presented some sort of threat that they were unable to deal with any other way than to pull out their "lethal backup" and blow him away.
