STALL THE HUNDRED DAY HEADLINES IN NORWAY: FREE AT LAST: A BREAKFAST FOR CHAMPIONS

Ireland, 02.10.2005 21:37

"Shellshock Rock" sez Wag "Banned in Norway " 20:00hrs 30/09/2005 FROM THE COMMENTS: On the 16th of June 2005, "Bloomsday" the 5 were still free, and protesting. That was the morning the Corduff's abandoned breakfast was photographed and we read of how Shell had illegally entered the lands in Rossport to begin illegal work on an illegal pipeline. Mr. Corduff's Bloomsday Brekkie will have gone cold by now. It would not be sexist to suggest Mrs. Corduff will make him another with cuddles on top. 20:00hrs 30/09/2005 We the Rossport 5 would like to thank our neighbours, friends and fellow Irish citizens for the loving support we and our families have received during these 94 traumatic days. In addition we would like to thank the incoming Norwegian government for their respect, support and assistance. We remind SHELL and their Irish government partner that imprisonments have historically and will always fail as a method to secure the agreement of Irish people. We now call on our supporters to intensify the campaign for the safety of our community and families. We invite all citizens to join with us at a national rally tomorrow (Sat 1st Oct - Ed: Reports and Photos) Saturday, October 1st. The rally will depart from the Garden of Remembrance at 2pm and march to the Dáil. The campaign has now begun in earnest. Portland, 02.10.2005 14:37

Millions for the Art Museum, pennies for the janitors? Rally in support of PDX janitors! Rally at Museum ribbon-cutting:

Oct 2, 2005 *11:30 AM
Portland Art Museum
1219 SW Park Avenue (corner of SW Park and SW Main)

The Portland Art Museum has just named its new building after Melvin "Pete" Mark, multi-million dollar building owner. On Sunday, October 2, Mark will be celebrated as a generous philanthropist at the museum's ribbon-cutting.

Though Mark has donated $3 million to the Art Museum in the past few years, janitors cleaning his luxury office buildings make just $28 a day, don't have affordable health care, and have no money left over to appreciate the museum.

Take action by going to  http://seiuaction.org/campaign/Art_Museum to let the art museum know that ordinary Portlanders value people before paintings.

AUDIO FILE: Reclaiming Our Election Process

Portland, 02.10.2005 14:37

In July of 2005, at the First Unitarian Church in Portland Oregon a forum was held concerning the legality of our recent elections, and the viability of the United States election process itself. Here in this report, you will be able to access audio files of these important and urgent presentations, either in RealMedia format or in MP3 format.

This forum featured two speakers, Thom Hartman, author and well known radio talk show host; and Paul Lehto, attorney, who recently wrote a paper on election fraud, and who is involved in a lawsuit in King County Superior Court, against Snohomish County and Sequoia Voting Systems.

This week end, September 30-October 2, 2005, a three day event is being held entitled, "National Summit To Save Our Elections." Our community will have the opportunity to learn how corporate-owned electronic election systems affect their vote, and how they can help restore citizen ownership of our elections. Both Thom Hartmann, and Paul Lehto will be making presentations, as well as other well known, and unfortunately for our right to vote, less known speakers will be in attendance.

Today I start heading home. I'm writing these words for a few reasons. One is to share a bit of the reality of the revolution going on here in Chiapas with you. Another is so that I can remember it all well. Another is to encourage you to come to Chiapas if you think it is for you.

These are some of the words of a San Diego Indymedia journalist who has recently been in Chiapas, Mexico. Traveling, working, and learning about Zapatismo and indigenous autonomy in southern Mexico, you can read his reports and see his photos below.

PL Cited for Violation on Old-Growth Logging Plan

San Francisco Bay Area, 01.10.2005 14:37

Pacific Lumber jumped the gun on logging operations in a controversial logging plan that contains a large stand of ancient redwoods which serve as habitat for an endangered seabird, the Marbled Murrelet. PL received a “Notice of Violation” Thursday from the Regional Water Board citing timber operations inside the so-called “Bonanza” timber plan that took place without a required waiver for waste discharge (sediment) into Nanning Creek. According to the Environmental Protection Information Center, the Bonanza harvest plan contains the largest unprotected, contiguous, occupied marbled murrelet stand left on Maxxam/PL's land.

California Governor Vetoes Marriage Equality Bill

San Francisco Bay Area, 01.10.2005 14:07

On September 29th Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed Equality California-sponsored Assembly Bill 849, the Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Protection Act, which had passed the state Senate and Assembly. He said that he did not feel that the legislature can overturn an initiative that the voters had decided. As a result of his veto, hundreds of thousands of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Californians and their families will continue to live without equal protection of the law. Equality California chapters and allied organizations hosted community gatherings in response to the Governor's veto on Friday, in Bakersfield, Los Angeles, Modesto, Sacramento, San Francisco (Photos: 1), San Luis Obispo, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, Solano County, and Ukiah, and on Thursday in San Diego.

The Governor did sign four remaining EQCA-sponsored bills: Assembly Bill (AB) 1400, the Civil Rights Act of 2005 (Laird, D-Santa Cruz), Senate Bill (SB) 973, which allows domestic partners of public employees who retired prior to January 1, 2005, to receive death benefits if the retiree dies before their partner; SB 565, which ensures legally recognized domestic partners are treated the same as spouses under California's property tax laws; and AB 1586, the Insurance Gender Non-Discrimination Act. The struggle of the unpaid workers of Sex Form company

Athens, 01.10.2005 13:07

The workers in Sex Form underwear industry (all of them women) are on a lock-up since the 29th of August, demanding immediate payment for their workhours so far. They attempt to strengthen their struggle by having an everyday presence outside the factory, trying to convince the strike-breakers for joining the strike, participating in demonstrations and rallies outside the Ministry for Labour and Social Affairs .

On the 26th of September, they blocked the entrance of the factory, resulting into the production process being stopped. The day after, the police force showed up, in order to make sure that the strike-breakers can get in the factory.

Maxxam/Pacific Lumber Slapped with Logging Violation Notice

Portland, 01.10.2005 05:37

Santa Rosa, CA -- In a brazen move, Maxxam/Pacific Lumber Co. (Maxxam/PL) began logging in the contested "Bonanza" timber harvest plan (THP # 1-05-097 HUM) on Tuesday, September 27 without the required authorization from the North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board (Water Board). After logging an unknown amount of the 250-acre plan, the illegal logging was stopped by the company.

Accordingly, on Thursday, September 29, Maxxam/PL was served a Notice of Violation by the Water Board for logging without a required permit.
The Bonanza harvest plan contains the largest unprotected, contiguous, occupied marbled murrelet stand left on Maxxam/PL's land. Last year, a comprehensive Status Review for the murrelet, prepared by a blue-ribbon panel of top murrelet researchers, warned that if current trends continue, the endangered species faces a very high probability of extinction in California within a very short time.

Reportback From GodHatesFags counterprotest

Portland, 01.10.2005 05:37

When I heard that the Westboro Baptist Church was coming to a Beaverton High School yesterday, my initial reaction was, "Won't somebody please think about the children!" However, after witnessing the counterprotest today, I realized that 'the children' are thinking for themselves.
<p>
As a youth, I was queer and in the closet. I grew up in the Midwest in a school of ninety kids. Being out really wasn't an option. I suppose I could have done it. I would have been threatened, isolated and humilated on a daily basis without even my family to support me. I couldn't do that. I thought of myself at that age today when I headed to Beaverton's Southridge High School.

...Chavez is a revolutionary, and you can agree with him or not with how far he goes with his rhetoric, but he has placed the resources from his country's oil sales into health care and literary programs for the poorest of the poor. I have to admire that. I know of no credible sources claiming that he is enriching himself at his peoples' expense. That has been the clear habit of Latin American leaders in the last several decades, but Chavez seems clean. He is an avowed leftist and friend of Fidel, but a corrupt militarist he's not.

House Approves Bill Gutting Endangered Species Act!

Portland, 01.10.2005 04:37

Sierra Club Press Release: Congress Takes First Step Toward Gutting Endangered Species Act; Rep. Pombo's Legislation Would Turn Back 30 Years of Successful Stewardship

Washington, D.C. -- Congress took the first step today toward gutting the 30-year old Endangered Species Act, America's safety net for fish and wildlife at the edge of extinction, voting 229 to 193 for legislation crafted by House Resources Chairman Richard Pombo (R-CA). The bill eliminates habitat protection measures for fish and wildlife facing extinction, creates an exemption for the approval of potentially dangerous pesticides and establishes a new entitlement program for developers and polluters by requiring the federal government to pay developers, the oil industry and polluters to avoid destroying the habitat of publicly owned fish and wildlife.. According to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), implementation of the Pombo legislation will cost the U.S. taxpayer $2.7 billion over the next five years.

This attempt to rewrite the landmark law is just the latest attempt by Rep. Pombo to undermine America's bedrock environmental protections. In addition to his assault on the Endangered Species Act, he's also working to weaken the National Environmental Policy Act, and pushing controversial measures to drill in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and off America's coasts, and sell off National Parks to private interests.

FBI raids homes of SD Grand Jury Resister

San Diego, 01.10.2005 01:07

30 September 2005 - 9:50AM PST

The FBI raided two homes this morning in search of computers and correspondence from Ms. Danae Kelley. Danae is currently in Federal custody in San Diego, after being found in contempt of court for refusing to co-operate with a Federal grand jury that has been convened to disrupt peaceful & legal animal rights and environmental activist groups in southern California.

Two homes were raided this morning at approximately 6:30am. Justin Hand and Danae Kelly's residence was searched for computers, and currently Justin is overseeing the raid at his home. Morgan Roberts, a friend of Danae and Justin also had his family's house raided this morning. Several computers and letters from Ms. Kelly were confiscated, using a warrant to collect information on Ms. Kelley.

It is becoming increasingly clear to me that the FBI and Federal prosecutors are only interested in harassing Ms. Kelley’s friends in an attempt to coerce her into testifying. The government has already offered her full immunity from prosecution---meaning they do not suspect her of any illegal activity.

PL Cited for Violation on Old-Growth Logging Plan

San Francisco Bay Area, 30.09.2005 23:07

Pacific Lumber jumped the gun on logging operations in a controversial logging plan that contains a large stand of ancient redwoods which serve as habitat for an endangered seabird, the Marbled Murrelet. PL received a “Notice of Violation” Thursday from the Regional Water Board citing timber operations inside the so-called “Bonanza” timber plan that took place without a required waiver for waste discharge (sediment) into Nanning Creek.

Last year, a comprehensive Status Review for the murrelet, prepared by a blue-ribbon panel of top murrelet researchers, warned that if current trends continue, the endangered species faces a very high probability of extinction in California within a very short time.

The violation is the most recent incident in a string of clashes between PL and the Water Board, whom PL blames for it’s financial troubles. The Board denies such responsibility. PL’s latest failure to comply with water quality permits is likely to prolong the tension.

Stop AWACS, behoud Schinveldse bossen

Netherlands, 30.09.2005 22:07

California Governor Vetoes Marriage Equality Bill

San Francisco Bay Area, 30.09.2005 06:37

On September 29th Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed Equality California-sponsored Assembly Bill 849, the Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Protection Act, which had passed the state Senate and Assembly. As a result of his veto, hundreds of thousands of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Californians and their families will continue to live without equal protection of the law. Equality California chapters and allied organizations are hosting community gatherings in response to the Governor's veto on Friday, September 30th. Most of the gatherings will take place between 5 and 6pm. Protests are scheduled for Bakersfield, Los Angeles, Modesto, Sacramento, San Francisco, San Luis Obispo, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, Solano County, and Ukiah. People in San Diego held a protest on Thursday night.

The Governor did sign four remaining EQCA-sponsored bills: Assembly Bill (AB) 1400, the Civil Rights Act of 2005 (Laird, D-Santa Cruz), builds upon the Unruh Civil Rights Act and related provisions to clarify and reinforce that all businesses that provide services, goods or accommodations to the public cannot discriminate based on sexual orientation, gender identity or marital status; Senate Bill (SB) 973 (Kuehl, D-Santa Monica), allows domestic partners of public employees who retired prior to January 1, 2005, to receive death benefits if the retiree dies before their partner; SB 565 (Migden, D-San Francisco), ensures legally recognized domestic partners are treated the same as spouses under California's property tax laws; and AB 1586, the Insurance Gender Non-Discrimination Act, (Koretz, D-West Hollywood), adds gender and gender identity to existing anti-discrimination provisions in California laws regulating insurance companies and health care service plans. GodHatesFags Coming to Beaverton

Portland, 30.09.2005 04:37

Members of Pastor Fred Phelps' church, the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka,KS are heading to Beaverton this Friday with one message, "God Hates Fags." Southridge High School in Beaverton, OR was planning on putting on a production of "The Laramie Project," a play about the aftermath of Matthew Shepard's murder in Laramie, WY. However, the school principal, Amy Gordon, stopped the play before it could get underway, saying that it was "too controversial" (the politically correct way of saying 'too gay'). Yet, members of the Westboro Baptist Church, which runs the website godhatesfags.com are still coming to Beaverton to let the school know that they never should have considered the play in the first place. First off, this is homophobia and discrimination in stopping this outstanding play. Second, this is bigotry of the most extreme degree coming into town to make sure that this homophobia stays in place. This needs to stop. Southridge High School at 2pm (on the dot, they're prompt) tomorrow and tell these people where they can stick their mis-interpreted bible. Southridge high school is located at 9625 SW 125th Ave. [ Schwarzenegger vetoes California's same-sex marriage bill | Gay bashers Protest at Beaverton School
