Resistance to War Spreads to Small Town America

Santa Cruz, CA, 07.10.2005 10:07

Regular Wednesday Protest in Felton

Wednesday afternoon, anti-war protests spread to the small town of Felton, a Santa Cruz County town of 1500. Protesters promised to hold their vigil every Wednesday afternoon until the end of the war.

The protesters meet at the corner of Highway 9 and Graham Hill Road. They held signs and lit candles. Some signs read "Ask the President What He Plans To Do About the War" and "Email the President and Tell Hium to Meet With Cindy."

More than a dozen protesters greeted the afternoon stream of commuters returning to the San Lorenzo Valley. Many commuters honked and yelled in support of the protest.

Students and Workers Teach Republicans a Lesson in Solidarity

Santa Cruz, CA, 07.10.2005 10:07

On Thursday, UCSC's College Republicans held a rally against the striking Metro bus drivers. While publicized all over campus, only a handful of students showed up to join them.

However, having heard of the anti-worker rally, students from the Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan (MEChA) and the Student and Worker Coalition for Justice (SWCJ), who have been very active supporting the bus drivers, were quick to react. They carpooled down to the rally and had far outnumbered the Republicans even before they arrived. While the mainstream media jumped at the opportunity to discredit the bus drivers' union (UTU Local 23), the pro-worker students showed that UCSC is overwhelmingly in solidarity with the bus drivers.

On Monday at UCSC, over 50 students and workers walked into Mike Rotkin's office, resulting in his acknowledgement that the Transit Board made a bad decision. On Friday, students and workers from UCSC will march at 4pm from the base of campus to the downtown Metro Center to show their solidarity.

Safavian, Abramoff, DeLay, And The K Street Project

San Francisco Bay Area, 07.10.2005 00:37

The separation of the Bush political machine from organized crime is often like the thin layer of rock between a seemingly ordinary surface and volcanic activity rumbling below. Sometimes, the lava spews forth and the illusion of normalcy is shattered. In the weeks ahead, a dangerous eruption is again threatening to shake the Bush family’s image of legitimacy, as the pressure from intersecting scandals builds.
So far, the mainstream news media has focused mostly on the white-collar abuses of former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay for allegedly laundering corporate donations to help Republicans gain control of the Texas legislature, or on deputy White House chief of staff Karl Rove for disclosing the identity of a covert CIA officer to undercut her husband’s criticism of George W. Bush’s case for war in Iraq.
Both offenses represent potential felonies, but they pale beside new allegations linking business associates of star GOP lobbyist Jack Abramoff – an ally of both DeLay and Rove – to the gangland-style murder of casino owner Konstantinos “Gus” Boulis in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 2001. These criminal cases also are reminders of George H.W. Bush’s long record of unsavory associations, including with a Nicaraguan contra network permeated by cocaine traffickers, Rev. Sun Myung Moon’s multi-million-dollar money-laundering operations, and anti-communist Cuban extremists tied to acts of international terrorism.

"How Rotten Are These Guys?" Robert Parry, Consortium News

Safavian, Former Chief Procurement Officer for the OMB
On October 5th, 2005, David Safavian, was accused in the federal grand jury indictment of making false statements to investigators. Safavian was arrested on September 19th, three days after resigning from his job as the chief procurement officer for the Office of Management and Budget. The charges against Safavian go back to his former position as chief of staff at the General Services Administration. While he was in that position he is accused of taking gifts from Jack Abramoff and covering up help he allegedly gave Abramoff, who was pursuing land deals with the General Services Administration. As, Chief Procurement Officer for the OMB, Safavian helped create the rules for federal reconstruction contracts in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
Jack Abramoff, Lobyist & Republican Activist
Abramoff is a central figure in a series of high-profile political scandals linked to the Republican Party. He is currently under investigation by grand juries in Washington, D.C., for his involvement in the Abramoff-Reed Indian Gambling Scandal, and by a grand jury in Guam over a separate matter. He was indicted on August 11, 2005, by a third grand jury in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for bank fraud arising out of an unrelated business deal.
Abramoff also is under investigation for his ties to the murder of Konstantinos Boulis; in September 2005, police charged three men in the 2001 gangland-style slaying of the Florida businessman who was gunned down in his car months after selling a casino cruise line to a group that included Jack Abramoff. Two of the three men charged had been hired as consultants by Adam Kidan, one of Abramoff's partners in the SunCruz Casinos venture. The men accused of the murder are allegedly connected to the Gambino crime family, but had received money from Abramoff in the months before the murder.
The investigations and indictments of Abramoff have taken on significant national importance because of the lobbyist's close political connections with leading national Republicans, including President of the United States George W. Bush. Congressman Tom DeLay, former Majority Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives, has called Abramoff one of his “closest and dearest friends.” Abramoff also has been a leading George W. Bush political fundraiser.
Tom DeLay, Former House Majority leader
On September 28th, 2005, a Texas grand jury indicted House Majority leader Tom DeLay (R - Texas) and two political associates, charging them with a conspiracy to violate Texas campaign finance laws.
The K Street Project
The K Street Project is little known outside the Washington beltway and its effectiveness as a political stratagem is only possible because of the unique importance of campaign finance to American politics. DeLay, together with Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum and some conservative activists conceived the notion 10 years ago that they should use the Republican majority in the House as a lever to ensure that the lobbyists, law firms and trade associations that inhabit Washington's K Street, heart of the industry, should only employ Republicans or sympathisers. It worked. The most influential Washington lobbyist is Barbour, Griffiths and Rogers; it employs not a single Democrat. Last year, in a classic operation, House Republicans let the Motion Picture Association of America (the film industry lobby group) know that appointing a Democrat, Dan Glickman, as its head would mean $1.5 billion of tax relief for the film industry was now in peril. Glickman staffed up the MPAA with Republicans, but the threat remains. In 2003, the Republican National Committee could claim that 33 of the top 36 top-level K Street positions were in Republican hands. Today, it's even closer to a clean sweep.

Oklahoma Veteran Arrested in DC on Sept. 26

Oklahoma, 06.10.2005 22:37

C. huti Reynolds, of Porum, OK, a member of Veterans for Peace, Green Party of Oklahoma and Unitarian Gihad, was one of 370+ people arrested at the White House on Sept. 26th. Another Oklahoman, Mary F. from OKC, was also arrested. Another Oklahoman, Mary F. from OKC, was also arrested. C. huti Reynolds, of Porum, OK, a member of Veterans for Peace, Green Party of Oklahoma and Unitarian Gihad, was one of 370+ people arrested at the White House on Sept. 26th. Another Oklahoman, Mary F. from OKC, was also arrested. I rode to DC with Mary, in her car. The trip had been arranged by a mutual friend, but then the friend decided not to go at the last minute. Mary drove, I don't have a license, due to 'poverty' and stubornness. We split the cost of gas. We stayed at a Codepink person's house in Nashvile on the way to and from DC. In DC, we stayed at Rhonda ?'s house, in Eccokeek, Maryland, 1/2 hour from DC. On Sunday the 25th, at the an organization meeting that was had attended by a 1000 with 400 people volunteering for civil disobedience-to be arrested. We had some nonviolence and legal training and broke up into affinity groups. I decided to join the Veterans for Peace agroup, which ultimately its size became about 19 people. I was wearing my pink floppy hat, which many people complimented me on and could have joined Codepink, but I thought they only wanted females. We VfPs initially determined how many were volunteering to be arrested (15) leaving four supporter persons-people who were not volunteering to be arrested, who would be our jail liason, take charge of our personal property, including wallets, cellphones, etc. and to be there when we were released. Joann, the spouce of Ron, a Veteran from California was the primary support person; there was also a Veteran who was an MD who would support people with medical conditions like me (I have heart disease-I needed to be sure my medications were available). Against Rhonda's advice, Mary drove in to DC Monday morning; heavy traffic, parking difficult and expensive, the underground garage closed at 11pm. But we were late. The 400+ met at the South end of the Ellipse, split in to two groups to literally surround the White House. This was a 'permitted' march in the streets. It was a bit of a strenous walk for me and some others but we made it to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. After a short rally, a small group of Blue Star Mothers?, including Cindy Shehann, along with the clergy/laity group, went to the White House gatehouse and asked to see pResident Bush. We, the remainder of the larger group, followed. I hurredily gave my med bag and cellphone to JoAnn, keeping ID and money. War criminal Bush didn't appear of course. After a brief confrontation between the crowd and police, Cindy and the small group sat down on the sidewalk while the rest of us remained standing, crowded around them. Minutes past before I saw the police (Capital Park Police) pickup Cindy (it appeared gently) and take her and a few others away to a paddy wagon. The police condoned off the sidewalk, separating the arrest volunteers from the others, using horsemounted police, at one point. They told the press to leave or they would be arrested. The press moved past the barrier. The different groups assembled with their groups; clergy and laity group, Codepink, Veterans For Peace, Buddhists/UUs, +. We alternately stood and sat sat down on the sidewalk. The police announced more than once, "If you don't leave this area, you will be arrested". The police began arresting people, it appeared at first, randomly. Then it became apparent that there were three teams working. There were a few resisters who used passive resistance but most of us 'cheerfully' cooperated. A man, no one knew who, jumped over the White House fence and was quickly subdued by the Secret Service, we were told. Among the several people who appeared were two Swat-type men carrying submachine guns who looked like they were ready to use them if the man had gotten closer to the White House. A lot of people could have been hit if they had started shooting. I stood holding onto the fence watching them drag the guy away when a policeman poked me in the side and said get back! We Veterans, fifteen males and two females, had decided as a group to be fully cooperative-not to risk a charge of 'resisting arrest' (and/or bodily injury) by refusing to cooperate. We were handcuffed tightly and very uncomfortably, behind our backs with plactic restraints, searched, photographed, possessions: ID,s, money etc, was placed in plastic bags and blue plastic ID bracelets (my #: 4-119) were place on our wrists. We shortly were placed on Metro busses (males on one bus, females on another). We had to learn to sit with the minimum pain with hands restrainted behind the back, otherwise it comfortable, A/C was on. There was a police driver and a uniformed Park Police Guard. The guard was friendly and there were amusing exchanges between him and us. One comment the white guard made was that the area arround the police station where we were being taken was a dangerous part of the city. On the way to the jail, singing broke out. Perhaps because of being a grumpy old man, I wasn't too much into singing, especially after 'This Land is Your Land' was sung, someone remarked "everyone loves that song". "Except Native Americans" said another. Being Cherokee, the remark has caused me to not like that song anymore. Sorry Woody Guthrie. We arrived at the police station, the bus is parked right in front. We saw several of the women who had been arrested earlier leaving the police station. We cheered them. Then nothing happened for hours. We just sat there. The guys began saying they needed to go to the bathroom (there were port-a-johns a few feet away). The cops took us off the bus one by one, cutoff the cuffs, we went to the john, they put the restraints back on, but not as tight as before. Hours later, guys started complaining about the restraints hurting and causing muscle cramps, the cops cutoff the restraints and put on new looser ones with hands in front. We're all much more comfortable now in the air-conditioned bus. After dark they moved us to what looked like a garage; it had rollup doors with a heavy wire floor-to-ceiling fence separating the two sections. It was not air-conditioned. The males were put on one side, females on the other. The 1/2 dozen females were soon joined by the codepink women. There were three dozen of them. They were singing dancing, having a good time. Medea Benjamin, the founder, was doing most of the leading. I managed to cut my hand with a sharp edge of the plastic restraint and it bled a bit because of the meds I take. A policeman cutoff my restraints, bandaged my hand and didn't put restraints back on. This is getting better and better! Sometime later four other guys and I were taken to a holding cell but the door was left open. We were processed: paperwork done, fingerprinted, picture taken, citations given [#P0571452; Place: 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, NW, WDC; Offense: Demonstarting without A Permit], valuables returned. I was told I had to leave the premises; to go either out the front gate or through a side exit to the nearby Metro station. Ron, the California Veteran had said (he had previously talked to JoAnn via one of the women's cellphones in the holding area) to meet her at the front gate. This began my few minutes of real apprehension. A woman (not my support person) was there with a cellphone and a van was stopped at the stop sign. "I'm part of the support group", she said. "I'll ask these guys in the van to take you to the Metro station". The guys said OK. I got in the van and we drove off. The driver asked "where do you want to go?". I didn't know. "The nearest Metro station" I said. "Where's that?" asked the driver. We're getting further away from the police station, in the wrong direction I thought. "I don't know, but I think its in the other direction", I said. We were now driving over a divided bridge, traveling a long way in the wrong direction. Eventually there was a place to turn around and we started back in the other direction and what seemed like many long minutes later found the Metro station. I thanked them as I hurredily got out. But my support person wasn't there. The son of an arrestee was there and he said he would help me. We called Joann on his cellphone, she told me to get on the Metro and get off at 'Dupont Circle'. Still very shaky, I bought a Metro ticket with the son's help, went downstairs, ask a person sitting on the platform which train to catch and became relaxed when I was able to read the signs on wall, got to Dupont Circle and met JoAnn. She said the police would not let her stay outside the gate because of potential danger from locals and that the Metro station was dangerous as well after dark. A whole lot of racism at work here I think. She asked where I wanted to go/do? I didn't know. I got my meds and cellphone and called Mary. She was still sitting on a bus, it would be hours before she was out and she was going with the Buddhists when she got out. Ron had gotten released and was on his way. JoAnn and I went to the nearest restaruant where I had the best sandwich and two beers of my life. In the meantime, Ron had arrived and not seeing us had gone looking for a pizta place with other releasees. JoAnn offered to let me stay in their hotel room. I accepted and we took a taxi to the hotel. In the room she said you and Ron can take the bed, I'll sleep on the floor. Exhausted but tense I went straight to bed. She turned on the TV, Jay Leno came on, his guest was the 'govanator'. She said "Do you mind if I change the Channel? I can't stand that man". I said no before going off to sleep. Mary called at 7am and told me to meet her at the car, which was two/three blocks away. Nvwato hiyadv idehesdi (Cherokee-let us live together in Peace)

Critical Mass is Thirteen

San Francisco Bay Area, 06.10.2005 16:37

It's been 13 years since the first “Commute Clot” brought together about 50 bicyclists at “PeeWee” Herman Plaza at the foot of Market Street in San Francisco. Within a few short months it had gained the moniker “Critical Mass” and the excitement and euphoria and sheer novelty of an “organized coincidence” that fills the streets with bicycles instead of cars was rapidly reproducing itself across the planet. Now there are websites galore documenting Critical Masses in towns everywhere, from Australia to Italy, Chile to Canada. Of the more than 400 places where Critical Mass rides have taken place, hundreds continue to ride every month.

Bristolian Shortlisted for Investigative Journalism Award

Bristol, 06.10.2005 16:37

And then there were six... And then there were six.. Bristolian Newsdesk writes: The short list for the inaugural Paul Foot Award for campaigning and investigative journalism has been announced: The Bristolian 'Spikey, angry, iconoclastic, rude, abrasive. The "smiter of the high and mighty" says The Bristolian on its masthead, evoking irresistible memories of early Private Eye. Run on its wits, talent and a shoestring, The Bristolian is the authentic voice of the streets. Foot would have loved and admired its two- fingered approach.' Stand-off At Greenstar Dumpsite At Killaghmore, Co. Galway

Ireland, 06.10.2005 16:07

'New native sport of the Irish' sez Wag, 'stalling them diggers' . A stand-off has been arranged in the saga at Killaghmore, Killconnell. Greenstar has agreed to stop work on the road used by bog owners, land owners and members of the Local Community and are going to meet with concerned community members and their representatives on Friday (tomorrow) at 2 pm. The saga so far is that Greenstar attempted to cut off part of a road and divert the people with rights on this road through land LEASED by Greenstar without even consulting with the local community. Last Tuesday week Brendan Kelly, a local man who uses the right of way to access his organic farmland, found his way blocked by a digger and dumper. He objected and his way was cleared. This Local Man had several such experiences until last Friday when he mounted a permanent vigil and blocked all machines belonging to Greenstar from interfering with his rights. He was threatened with jail and the guards were present several times. On Monday in the presence of the guards and other concerned members of the Local Community he stood in front of a digger and stopped it. His actions were carried out using his rights under Agenda 21 and the Aarhus Convention. Greenstar claim to have an EIA, though Galway County Council say they don’t have an EIA. Greenstar claim to have bought this road but refuse to say from whom they bought it – it is a right of way used by several people. Greenstar claim to have a tree-felling license but refuse to produce it and we know that they are already been investigated by the guards for felling much more trees than their license allows. Greenstar claim to have had public consultation but none of the local community were aware that Greenstar could stop people using a road that they and their ancestors have been using for generations. There are several questions that need to be answered and this concerns everyone in the Country. Can Greenstar do what they like when it comes to the rights of peasant farmers and can Greenstar be trusted to operate any project? Are Greenstar going to be the next Shell? Finally, I would like to congratulate the Rossport Five for all their efforts. These brave men have given us the courage to fight for our rights and the safety of our community as they fought for theirs. Contact: Brendan Kelly Killaan, Woodlawn, Ballinasloe, Co. Easton Community Centre to be handed to 'Christian Values' Group

Bristol, 06.10.2005 16:07

Easton Community Centre – future decided? Easton Community Centre – future decided? BS5'er writes: Last Monday Bristol City Council held an interview panel for 3 bidders to manage Easton Community Centre. Although a decision was due on Tuesday, there has been no news until now...The following email has just popped up on the Easton residents elist "I've just spoken to a friend who has been trying to find out who won the bid to manage ECC (interviews were on Monday). Apparently the BCC press office told him that Toc H have won, with a full press release out later today (it'll be on BCC's website front page I expect). St Werburghs CC & CA were told on Tuesday that they were 'runners-up', but didn't know who had won. Toc H are a faith-based (christian) charity founded in Belgium during WW1, although they were very shy about discussing their faith at the ECC Q&A session on 20 September." Parent Leaders Support Head Start Workers' Vote to Strike Over Non-Economic Issues

Santa Cruz, CA, 06.10.2005 11:08

The Santa Cruz County Community Counseling Center (SCCCC), the parent corporation for the Head Start Program, publicly expressed disbelief that workers would be willing to strike over non-economic issues. Parent Leader Paola Rojas says she understands easily.

According to Rojas, elected parent leaders who make up the Parent Policy Council have submitted no fewer than three petitions to the agency in the past twelve-months. Federal mandates require that parents have a say in how the program is run along with the agency’s Board of Trustees. “But SCCCC has done everything it can to stop us” says Rojas. Not only have petitions been ignored but Administrators have attempted to intimidate us and walked out of meetings when confronted.

Workers, too, say the agency is not listening. Last week, they voted to give their negotiators strike authorization. The message to SCCCC is that time is running out. For workers, the long negotiation process has deepened divisions with the agency. Workers voted for a union because of heavy-handed agency actions; the difficult negotiations have only strengthened the workers’ resolve. Agency non-responsiveness to workers and parent leaders has convinced workers that they must hold out for binding arbitration to assure fairness when grievances arise.

Students and Workers Demand a Sweat-Free UC

Santa Cruz, CA, 06.10.2005 09:08

As part of a national anti-sweatshop campaign taking place at over 40 colleges and universities in the U.S., students and workers from UC Santa Cruz held a rally and march to demand that UCSC apparel no longer be produced in sweatshops.

The marchers, a few of whom had family members currently working in sweatshops overseas or have had personal experiences themselves, initially educated the many passerbys in busy Baytree Plaza before marching to the Chancellor's office where a list of demands was presented to an administrative representative. The administration's follow-through will be closely watched.

KBOO supernova

Portland, 06.10.2005 08:37

KBOO is currently in a last sprint to prise $220 K from a reluctant CPB. Among the Staff and the Board, this is viewed as a worthwhile goal, but as only a part of the Pledge Drive. We've defied CPB cuts before, and we sailed past the Republican "death sentence" cuts years ago, because we decided to take our case directly to the people. This is in contrast to other "community radio" stations around the nation, who buckled under to Federal pressure to abandon dissenting commentary and "real news" in favor of boutique, balkanized ethno-music schedules. If we get the CPB money (based on a harsh deadline), great, and if we don't, the Feds can screw themselves!

At present, KBOO seems to be building a greater national presence (see KBOO.FM). Despite some problems with maintaining news department continuity, we are on track to start up some decent reporting. And the Internet has had the effect of breaking the AP News propaganda buzz. We hope to do more local reporting soon.

The new Board is chock-full of bright, eager, experienced activists. Expect some changes. And they are ready to listen to you. [ read more ]

Protesters Met Vancouver Mayors' Prayer Breakfast Attendees

Portland, 06.10.2005 08:37

The annual Mayors' Prayer Breakfast in Vancouver was sponsored by the Full Gospel Business Men's Fellowship (FGBMF), a group that denied a Muslim to lead prayer, denies women membership, and is known to support "traditional" families. Some of us called asking mayors not to participate, or not participate on taxppayer time. The FGBMF is an intolerant group.

Five protesters were at the Hilton's sidewalk in the morning's still darkness, chilly air, and under sprinkling skies. We carried signs, "Mathew Shepard is my brother," " 'God'" includes all," and you are eating at a bigotfest. One thought the people coming in were real small in numbers. I think maybe 100 came.
