100+ Person Rally at Seaboard Corp. Office: Return the Land Now!

Boston, 31.07.2004 22:48

"Here we are with Harry Bresky’s office behind us, and we’re here to say, ‘Give it back, Harry.’ The Ava Guarani and Kolla communities have made an urgent appeal for international solidarity. We have heard the appeal, and today we act upon it." This is one of many lines in an educational skit delivered today on the steps of the office of the Seaboard Corporation’s President and CEO, Harry Bresky, in Brookline, MA. Over one hundred activists gathered to express their disgust about Seaboard Corp’s complicity in the displacement of the Ava Guarani and Kolla communities from Salta, Argentina and allowing brutal repression of those re-occupying their native land.

RNC Protests: Another Party for Elite White Kids?

NYC, 31.07.2004 21:14

by Kirsten Anderberg www.kirstenanderberg.com As I watch all the money and energy being put into the RNC protests in NYC this year, I have begun to be repulsed. Why haven't these troops of protesters been called out like this for the issue of "homelessness," or "hunger?" Why is it that tens of thousands of Americans are willing to put this much time, money and energy into one national convention protest, but not willing to do the same for the poor and hungry?

Camejo, Palest: The Loss of Democracy in 2004 vs. Benjamin / Ellsberg Anybody But Bush

Hudson Mohawk, 31.07.2004 12:13

Peter Camejo, running for VP along with Ralph Nader, says "there is a mystery to the 2004 presidential election; a silence has fallen on America regarding a glaring contradiction. As we enter the second half of 2004, there is massive popular opposition to the war in Iraq and to the USA PATRIOT Act -- possibly a majority of Americans. Yet these same people are about to vote in overwhelming numbers for John Kerry for President." Greg Palast talks about the real Kerry agenda. Meanwhile, a number of progressives are calling for a vote for the Green Party in safe states and for Kerry in the battleground states.

Woodlawn Community Residents Battle Land Grab

Chicago, 31.07.2004 11:27

Residents of Chicago's south side Woodlawn community are engaged in a pitched battle to resist a land grab that would benefit high-end development at the expense of long-term residents.

The stakes are high, with the neighborhood's 61st Street business corrider -- a formerly thriving stretch of Black-owned businesses -- at stake.

The gentrification scheme is backed by 20th ward alderman Arenda Troutman and her boosters, including powerful developer Brinshore Development, LLC, which stands to profit from the redevelopment scheme -- and the displacement it would create.

Troutman has used her local power over zoning changes to push the gentrification plan -- and community residents are fighting back. Read more.

An Assessment of DNC Strategy and Organizing

Boston, 30.07.2004 23:02

So…… Now that the DNC is over perhaps there can be some assessment of the effectiveness of our strategy and organizing. I want to start with the good. It’s clear that logistics came together amazingly. The problem is the people simply didn’t come to take advantage of all the hard work that went into logistics, and there never was a real vision put forth for action.

Boston Incubates Decentralized Resistance

Boston, 30.07.2004 23:01

The City of Boston and Federal Agencies transformed Boston into a totalitarian police state in the days leading up to and during the Democratic Convention of 2004. The organs of oppression prepared for the arrests of 2000. During the weeks leading up to the DNC, the FBI and local police officers harassed dissidents and anarchists across the United States. Naturally, these acts of oppression gave pause to some protesters and the numbers that turned out for the DNC were smaller than expected. Despite this, the resistance to the DNC was a success. The city saw many decentralized actions, planned and executed by small groups. This new form of organized (or disorganization) was difficult for the police to infiltrate and many actions took the police by surprise.

Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition tells Senator Frist: Education Not Deportation!

Tennessee, 30.07.2004 22:17

On Friday, July 17 fifty members of the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights coalition and their supporters gathered in front of the Downtown Nashville Convention Center to deliver 9,000 signed petitions to Senator Bill Frist, Senate Majority Leader. The petitions were in support of the Dream Act, legislation currently pending in the Senate which would greatly improve access to higher education for the children of immigrants and refugees residing in the United States. Police denied members of the coalition entrance to the convention center to deliver the petitions to Senator Frist, who was speaking to a gathering of Tennessee Republicans. Tennesseans Complete 400 Mile Canoe Trip with Message to Governor - "Stop Mountaintop Removal Coal Mining"

Tennessee, 30.07.2004 20:20

On a bright Saturday afternoon, on the east bank of the Cumberland River, coalfield residents addressed members of the media and representatives from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. As members of Save Our Cumberland Mountains spoke about the need for the state to take action to stop mountaintop removal, a fleet of canoes, kyaks, motor boats, and even a sail boat landed behind them. At the same time, a team on the opposite bank of the river unfurlled a a 50 foot banner which read: Gov. Bredesen Don't Let Mining Turn Rocky Topless.

But has Johnnie Kerry been good so far?

Fifth Day of Protests, July 29th

Boston, 30.07.2004 15:43

To close the protests against the DNC, the police decided to attack the protesters. Tension mounted all day, starting with the 100-person Critical Mass bike ride at 8:00 am, which was trailed by a dozen bike cops. There were also a number of independent actions by affinity groups. Throughout the day, activists reported being tailed by undercover police, a helicopter hovered above the Convergence Center, and several activists were temporarily detained and searched by the police. A permitted No Blood for Oil March, of 100-150 people, left Copley Square at 1:00, swelling to 500 as they marched towards the Fleet Center, site of the DNC. Upon arriving at Government Center, near the Fleet Center, a stand off with the police ensued, with the police eventually attacking protesters (on the excuse of a non-existent Molotov cocktail), arresting three people and sending at least one protester to the hospital. The protesters were released after six hours of jail solidarity work. Then final protest of the day was a queer kiss-in at 6:30.
