No a la valla. Movimientos contra la guerra en la frontera.

estrecho / madiaq, 01.11.2005 05:37

estrecho / madiaq, 01.11.2005 05:37

We Can Win; Now When We Take a Stand for Human Rights It Means More. . .

Maine, 01.11.2005 05:37

With legislation on the verge of passing to close the "School of the Assassins", the time has come this November to stand up against violence, torture, and war! This Nov. 18-20 we ask that all those who stand for justice and democracy join us at the gates of The U.S. Army School of the Americas (SOA/WHINSEC), in Fort Benning, Georgia. In November of 1989, 14-yr old Cecilia Ramos, her mother, and 6 Jesuit Priests were murdered by a Salvadoran Death Squad attempting to instill fear in anyone who raised their voice against El Salvador's military. This November - as the 15th anniversary of the SOA Watch movement and support for legislation HR 1217 on the verge of closing the school - we need YOU, your family and friends, to join us at the gates in Fort Benning to end the violence and demand justice and freedom.

Students Disrupt Fee Setting Meeting

Aotearoa, 01.11.2005 04:08

Victoria University council members met on Monday to set student fees, following on from a much-publicised leak and publication of the fee options in the student paper in early October. About 40 students protested against the fee increase and eventually forced the council to move to a private location, but not before fees were hiked by up to 10%.

Dr. Dhafir Sentenced October 27th

Portland, 01.11.2005 02:37

Dr. Dhafir was sentenced today, in Syracuse. The place was packed and silent. When Dr. Dhafir came in the room everyone about 100 people stood in respect of him. It lasted about 3 hours from 9:30 am to 12:00 noon He is a highly respected and peaceful man in the Muslim community and in the general Central New York area. He has been sentenced to around 22 yrs, I believe, more details to come from the news tonight or tomorrow.

The case of Rafil Dhafir, a Syracuse NY based oncologist of Muslim faith and Iraqi descent, shows what can happen when a zealous justice department (FBI) and an eager prosecution are willing to bend the rules to win a conviction. To our knowledge he is the only person to convicted of breaking the sanctions against Iraq.

E-Mails Needed on Fee Hearing!

Portland, 01.11.2005 02:37

Pasted below is an action alert from our friends at Western Slope No Fee Coalition. We all have an immediate opportunity to provide decision makers in the US Senate with much-needed public comment about the implementation of the RAT. These Senators know there are problems. They just don't know how bad those problems are or where, specifically, they are occurring. This is an call for E-MAILS. Please help. Thank You.

The Senate Subcommittee hearing held on Wednesday, October 26th to review implementation of the new fee law, the Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act (FLREA), presented plentiful evidence of agency overreach beyond the letter and the intent of the law. On our side is the fact that the Senate unanimously passed Sen. Craig Thomas's (R-WY) bill in 2004, which made permanent Park Service fees ONLY, and would have allowed US Forest Service, BLM and US Fish & Wildlife Service recreation fees to lapse. Key Senators were extremely upset when the FLREA was foisted on them with no opportunity for debate, hearings or a vote, as a rider attached to a must-pass spending bill in Dec 2004.

vital to the success of our efforts to curtail the agencies' overreach in the implementation of the FLREA is YOUR INPUT to Washington DC! Quite simply, more will happen, and faster, if an unprecedented number of emails are received at the offices of the Subcommittee. Written public testimony is being accepted into the official record of the hearing until November 4th

N.C.A.D. Students Say F.U.C.D.

Ireland, 31.10.2005 18:07

On Thursday we held our silent protest as all members of staff went to the 'Questions and Answers' meeting regarding the proposed closure of our Thomas Street campus... The silence lasted only until the meeting began, to be followed by 3 hours of colourful and noisy opposition to the move! Hundreds of students lined the corridors around the meeting and shouted slogans, many directly to Colm O'Briain, the director of NCAD, one of the main men involved in the proposal of this plan. As of yet, there's no official word from the government in relation to the move. Local Councillor's have been contacted and many are in opposition to the proposed plan, and will meet with City Council officials and Colm O'Briain on November 11th. In relation to spin-off's question: "I wonder have the SU contacted those "suppliers" and "small businesses" &c.., in the area to ask them about their views on losing their customer base? Quite probably budding artists will remain loya It was first revealed to the NCAD Students Union on Thursday 20th October, by an anonymous source, that the Board of NCAD were strongly considering the possibility of relocating the college to the Belfield campus of UCD. Students have reacted swiftly to this largely unwelcome development. The Campaigns officer of the NCAD SU submitted this report on the first student action taken in opposition to the proposed move. On Thursday (27th October) we held our silent protest as all members of staff went to the 'Questions and Answers' meeting regarding the proposed closure of our Thomas Street campus... Local Counciller's have been contacted and many are in opposition to the proposed plan, and will meet with City Council officials and Colm O'Briain on November 11th. . . . Local business' have been contacted and are all generally in disbelief about these plans, and are entirelly opposed to the porposal. Our local Centra even got involved at the protest with the manager bringing boxes of bottled water to the students in order to encourage us to continue the protest. As the staff finished their meeting, the protest again moved to the entrance in order to allow staff to hear our opinions as they left. With music and chants ringing loudly through the campus, the staff walked through and applauded our protest, thanking us for having enough respect for ourselves, the staff, and the local community. The director, Colm O'Briain, left through the fire escape and walked around the campus in order to avoid having to face the students! Overall, we believe the protest was hugely successful, and we promise the staff of NCAD, the local business' of the area, and the local community who benefit so much from the college's presence that we will continue to fight for an independent National College of Art and Design on Thomas Street! Support Needed For Those Arrested at Minutemen Protest

San Francisco Bay Area, 31.10.2005 17:07

The Bay Area Coalition to Fight the Minutemen called for an action to oppose the Minutemen Project's rally to gather public support for their attempts to harass poor, undocumented border-crossers and to announce their support of a new initiative that would establish a state border police in addition to the existing federal border patrol.

There was a rally on the West Capitol steps in Sacramento on Saturday October 29th. It featured the founder of the Minutemen Project, Jim Gilchrist, and the legislative sponsors of the California Border Police Initiative, amongst others. About 600 people representing anti-racist groups throughout California arrived at the Capitol in busses and carpools from the Bay Area and the Central Valley to confront the Minutemen. Among those attending the protest against the vigilantes were Mexican American Political Association National President Nativo Lopez, former Green Party gubernatorial candidate Peter Camejo, and representatives from Bay Area Coalition to Fight the Minutemen, Deport the Migra Coalition, Zapatista Solidarity Coalition, Brown Syndicate, various anarchist collectives, and other statewide organizations. Three people were arrested Saturday at an anti Minuteman rally at the State Capitol, and two were treated for injuries. Photos | Press Release on Arrrests | Read more
