Reflections on Portland's November 2 Protests

Portland, 05.11.2005 09:38

N2 and the future. . .. bring a bike we can look at many of the failures, and i suppose some of the successes of N2, i agree with the sentiment that we need other things, ideas, locations for resistence for nov 17th, there is another march, called for by the united for peace and justice folks it is starting at pioneer square at 1pm, pretty much the same thing as what just happened, but i say BRING A BIKE!! [ read more ]

a vision from the next protest I see our next action in Portland taking a different form. I see the days of lead-up creating possitive tools of communication: including fliers, puppets, costumes, instruments, gardens. I see several opptions of where to start: mostly on the East-side. I see gatherings starting in a dozen parks. FNB and Rainbow Family, and other kitchens are set up to feed people, get them nourished and strong. [ read more ]

Nov. 2: Stop complaining and get involved! Putting together a rally and a march is hard work! And it is everyones responsibility! So I want to emplore those of you who are criticizing this event, saying it was too small, too quiet, not brave enough, not enough civil disobedience etc: Get involved and make it happen! This is not the last event! We need everyone to really work, and not just wait for the next one to happen, come, get dissapointed, and feel demoralised. [ read more ]

What if we spread out away from the ghetto of demos in liberal hot-spots? Lots of activity in the same old places. Do they ever go to the places that REALLY could use their energy? Don't assume that so-called "conservatives" don't want to think outside their spoon-fed paradigm! On and before Nov.2 i was travelling in various portions of Washington and noted how dead everything was. People who obviously had no knowledge of the situations being organized in the usual liberal hot-spots. [ read more ]

No Media Coverage - Lets Make Them Publish It There was absolutly no news coverage and that makes it a little harder to reach a larger scale of people. I called the Oregonian today and asked why it was not covered in the paper. The public editor was not in at the time but his advisor said there was actualy multiple people calling in and asking the same thing. [ read more ]

Assault the Media Ive been reading many comments regarding the lack of media coverage on the protest. Why the suprise? Why would the corporate media go out of their way to show people they are not alone, and that there is a solid resistance to tyranny, when they could sell more anti-depressants for their sponsers. We have to remember that we own the streets, and they are fear mongering intruders. [ read more ]

Woman arrested for asking about animal research goes to trial on Monday

Portland, 05.11.2005 07:38

Recently a woman named Mars called OHSU to ask questions about the animal experimentation conducted there. She was told that they had printed materials on the subject and she went to the campus to pick them up. Soon after arriving and stating her purpose there, to pick up the information, she was accosted by OHSU security. She was told to leave the property and after she exited, she was grabbed on the public sidewalk, handcuffed and arrested.

On Monday, Mars will go on trial for trespassing.

Clearly at OHSU, just asking about their animal research is considered suspicious behavior. The public pays millions of dollars for this experimentation and it is supposedly for our benefit yet we have no right to even ask about it?

Fall Creek Salvage Sale Timber Auction

Portland, 05.11.2005 07:38

On Tuesday, November 2, at 10 am, Cascadia Forest Defenders organized a protest at the Middle Fork Ranger Station in the Willamette National Forest, in Westfir, OR to show opposition to the Fall Creek Salvage Sale, where 2.422 million board feet were to be auctioned off to the highest bidder. Just under twenty protesters occupied the lawn and lined the highway in front of the Ranger Station. After speaking with the head LEO of the Willamette National Forest, one activist, black flowing cape and all, was allowed entry inside the building, and was permitted to sit at a table alongside the bidding timber companies (Bald Knob, Butte Timberland, and Silver Creek Lumber), with stern warnings not to disrupt the proceedings.

Fifteen minutes after the bidding began, it ended, with Silver Creek Lumber (a front for Columbia Helicopters) winning the high bid of $195.00 / 1,000 board feet. If you do the math, it comes out roughly to be $480,000. Attempts to pass out literature and to converse with the timber companies about forest fire ecology proved futile, with timber company execs. unwilling to listen to what they insist are "hippie-isms."

Paris Enters Into it's Second Week of Race Riots

Philadelphia, 05.11.2005 01:38

Riots have erupted in a Parisian suburb which is home to immigrant communities over the course of the last eight days, in the area of Seine-Saint-Denis, a northern Parisian suburbs. They erupted on Thursday, October, 27th due to the "accidental" death of two young people (15 and 17 years old). The circumstances of the death are shrouded in secrecy. These urban acts of violence many argue are due to the actions of local police, and a lack of jobs for young immigrants and a lack of subsidies for local associations. More generally, young people in this immigrant community are living in impoverished urban areas which chronically suffer from a lack of opportunities, consistent obstacles to integration, both of which are caused by unjust government policies.

Cops, gangmembers, and low intensity war games: R U statecraft illiterate?

Maine, 05.11.2005 01:07

The idea that western society is a 'chain-of-command' society and that the low intensity wars that happen here are played out by pawns of those wars appears to be a way of seeing what few seem to consider. To see this is to begin to not only understand why the feds have worked so hard to shut down and undermine the IMC projects (because we have here the *threat of a good example*) but also build a basis on which to envision truly serious alternatives.

Info Meeting About Bay Area Caravan to New Orleans on November 5th

San Francisco Bay Area, 04.11.2005 20:37

The Common Ground Collective has called for a National Caravan to bring some 300 volunteers to in New Orleans, arriving on November 20th and working over the week of Thanksgiving until November 27th. Common Ground says that rebuilding the 9th Ward is both relief work and a political act.
A meeting on Saturday, November 5th at 11:00am will be the place for people interested in participating, in any way, in the Bay Area Caravan to help rebuild/repair/clean-up the 9th Ward in Louisiana. The meeting will be held in the Green Party office in San Francisco, at 1028A Howard Street, between 6th and 7th Streets. The meeting will cover: background on Common Ground and the 9th Ward; what the Roadtrip and the on-the-ground work will look like; what volunteers need to know; making goals and action plans for raising money and supplies; matching riders with drivers and gettting leads on vehicles; a communication plan for Bay Area volunteers; and determining the location, date, and time of the send-off gathering. A meeting was held on November 2nd, and Saturday's meeting was scheduled to accomodate people who were not able to attend on Wednesday. On Sunday, November 13th from 4:00pm-8:30pm, an anti-racist training, especially for white folks, will be held. Organizers are asking that people who plan to attend RSVP.

The Roadtrip for Relief volunteers will bring donated funds, and building and cleaning supplies to New Orleans. Volunteers will work on a particular section of the 9th Ward, picking up yard debris, cleaning streets, tarping rooftops, etc. For nearly a month, Common Ground has been organizing and meeting folks in the neighborhood as they return. A community center was just established which will soon be the site of another Common Ground distribution center of needed goods.

Lloyd Center Victoria's Secret Uprising Quelled by Crack Mall Security Team

Portland, 04.11.2005 17:38

A small riot broke out in front of the Victoria's Secret mall outlet storehouse in the Lloyd-controlled District [yesterday]. Mall security forces posted within and around the Ladies' undergarments supply depot effectively silenced the rowdy group of Ladies' garment discontents by dragging them through a service corridor and dumping them in the gutters, where they belong. The Department of Homeland Security issued an orange alert empire-wide as similar skirmishes erupted throughout the day. Security teams report that all sectors of the Portland region of the United Empire of States are now secure, additional forces have been posted to retain order at all Ladies' undergarment depots, and that nothing else bad is happening anywhere else in the world.

Bristol Students in Solidarity with Murdered Colombian Student

Bristol, 04.11.2005 13:07

Colombia, The Terrorism the Media Ignores Justice for Jhony Silva Oliver Edwards writes: Following the killing by police of twenty one year old Jhony Silva Aranjuren in the University of Valle in Cali, Colombia, on 22nd September, students in the University of Bristol, that were in Cali that day on a human rights delegation, carried a coffin through the Students’ Union and placed it on the steps of the Union building at the freshers fair. Before the event today, doctoral student Geoff Norburn said “we will make certain that this will be done in a conduct appropriate and respectful to Jhony’s family and friends. I am sure that we can ensure, as people in the University of Valle on the day, that others will accord this symbolic action with the recognition it deserves”. At noon, students from the Bristol Students Colombia Solidarity Campaign carried a coffin through the Students’ Union and placed it on the steps outside, to bring this tragic incident to the attention of students at the freshers fair. Carrying roses, two of the students wore T-shirts with the slogan ‘Justice for Jhony Silva’. Others distributed leaflets and talked to passers-by about the significance of this killing within the context of the repression of public university communities in Colombia. Lara Coleman, who leads the ‘Universidad Viva’ campaign in the UK through the Colombia Solidarity Campaign, said “In Colombia, any social criticism is met by fierce reactionary measures ranging from death threats to assassination by military and paramilitary forces”. Fears of a Bristol Police State as Sainbury's Five Trial Begins

Bristol, 04.11.2005 13:07

'Prevention of Terrorism Act' or 'Prevention of Freedom Act'? Freedom to Protest? Day Three...due to pressures on the judges' time, the defendants were told that a full written verdict would be delayed until November 1st. Day Two in Yate, Bristol - Ms Poots (Prosecution): "So you admit that [as per Sainsburys statement] there is no proven risk?" [from drinking GM-fed cow's milk]. Natasha (Defendant): "I don't think that a lack of evidence is assurance."Bristle Editor 4 writes: Recently, on 23 September, swift thinking by Bristol’s No2ID campaign enabled them to catch-out Home Office Minister Andrew Burnham MP...Elsewhere, other campaigners against ID cards were less fortunate. In Newcastle on 8 September 6 campaigners driving to picket the EU Justice Ministers meeting were stopped by police on their way, and held for many hours in order 'to prevent violent disorder'....A feature of these and many other incidents has been the abuse by the state & police (and indeed local authorities such as Bristol) of existing legislation [while our rights such as] The Geneva convention on refugees, the European Convention on Human Rights, even the EU Human Rights Act, are proving to be worthless pieces of paper, as our freedoms of speech, expression, assembly, and even thought are attacked. Full article. Meanwhile, feeling the pressure of the State, the Sainsbury Five begins writes Miss T; Avon Magistrates Court, Yate, Bristol, saw the opening day of the trial against 5 protesters who blockaded a Sainsbury's depot to stop the distribution of GM-fed milk back in February. The protesters are charged with Aggravated Trespass, but claim that they were acting to protect the public and their children from the harmful effects of Sainsbury's milk which is from cows fed on GM. Around 30 people came to the court to support the defendents and spell out the message "GM IS IN MILK" with their bodies, as well as perform street theatre with a Damian-Hurst-style-see-through-plastic cow banner. The day progressed well. The prosecution's attempt to lay heavy compensation claims unravelled under examination as it appeared that Sainsbury's figures had been plucked out of thin air. One prosecution withess, a 'National Public Order Tactical Provider' described the protesters at the time of the action as being "Quite pleasant".
