Curry County District Attorney Imposing Harsh Conditions on Blockade Arrestees

Rogue Valley, 03.08.2004 21:59

Curry County DA Charlie Steak is flexing his legal muscle to indimidate the nonviolent protesters who were arrested at last week's road blockade at the Indi timber sale. Sarah Sabol, the woman arrested in the platform, has been released from jail under the condition that she remain in Gold Beach and check in with the jail every day for the next month until her trial. She has no friends or family in the Gold Beach area and her attorney is working to reverse this extreme condition of release.

Shanna Foley, one of the women arrested on the ground was bailed out of jail this evening after the DA doubled her bail amount to $20,000 based on the fact that she was recently arrested at a Greenpeace action. Patrick Schubert, the other inmate still in jail was originally offered an opportunity to be released if he agreed to stay out of active logging sites until his trial. This condition of release and bail has now been revoked. His public defender will attempt to re-instate bail Wednesday morning.

The Mendocino Model

Santa Cruz, CA, 03.08.2004 21:41

On March 6, 2004 residents of Mendocino County passed Measure H, banning the planting of Genetically Engineered (GE) crops -- also known as Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) -- within their county. The measure is now being used as a model in at least a dozen other counties in California where local residents are well on their way to passing similar measures. Organizers in Butte, Humboldt, Marin and San Luis Obispo counties have already collected enough signatures to place measures on the November ballot. Californians feel that local measures seeking to ban the cultivation of GE crops are critical steps toward economically and ecologically sustainable agriculture.

California farmers produce more than 350 varieties of crops and export more than any state in the US. Although California is recognized as a world leader in organic food production and sustainable agriculture, the world’s largest biotechnology companies are attempting to force GE crops onto California’s farms. Genetic engineering poses a significant risk to the environment, our food supply and the economic health of farmers.

The Media and Emotions: A Critique of Mainstream Media Coverage of the Anti-DNC Protests

Boston, 03.08.2004 20:26

Every night last week I would come home and watch my comrades (and sometimes myself) march through the streets of Boston, rally across the city, or hold a bazaar on Boston Common. Even when the media did use one of the many interviews they filmed, I still wasn’t satisfied. When protesters were shown, they were not portrayed as intelligent, but rather as insane for wanting to protest the Democrats. Violence seems to be the only story most reporters are looking for. Besides the standpoint that protesters are crazy, there is an inability to capture the emotions of the people. The vigor with which the makeshift drums are beaten is not apparent to the television viewer. The gigantic sense of unity with complete strangers is not done justice on the airwaves. You cannot tell how serious and desperate we are from a video of us chanting. More importantly, none of the reasons we do any of these things is examined, but rather the editing and censoring discredit the fact that we do them.

New Terror Alert: A Look at The Morning Papers

NYC, 03.08.2004 15:16

Thinking hard about the most recent terror alert issued by the U.S. government? Here's just a brief glance through the New York Times the day after NYC went into a state of high security:

"Much of the information that led the authorities to raise the terror alert at several large financial institutions in the New York City and Washington areas was three or four years old, intelligence and law enforcement officials said on Monday. They reported that they had not yet found concrete evidence that a terrorist plot or preparatory surveillance operations were still under way."
-- Pg. A1

"I believe that the American people would be less likely to believe that the terror alerts are not political if Tom Ridge, the homeland security secretary, had not ended his press conference on Sunday by saying, "We must understand that the kind of information available to us today is the result of the president's leadership in the war against terror." Mr. Ridge made it political at that moment."

Richmond, 03.08.2004 14:35

Come out this Saturday August 7th to the Queer Space for an Richmond IMC Workshop about the "copyleft" movement inspired by freeware pioneers Linux and the Free Software Foundaation.

"...society needs to encourage the spirit of voluntary cooperation in its citizens. Where software owners (ie. Microsoft) tell us that helping our neighbors in a natural way is "piracy", they pollute our society's civic spirit." - Richard Stallman, Free Software Foundation

Stay afterwards to watch a film called "Freedom Downtime"

FREEDOM DOWNTIME is the story of computer hacker Kevin Mitnick, imprisoned without bail for nearly five years. The film tries to uncover the reasons why the authorities are so scared of Mitnick as well as define what exactly he did. As word of a new Hollywood movie portraying Mitnick as a terrorist becomes known, hackers begin to turn to activism to get their message out. Through interviews with relatives, friends, lawyers, and experts in the computer and civil liberties arena, a picture of a great injustice becomes apparent. A cross country journey uncovers some realities of the hacker culture as well as the sobering reality that so many technically adept young people seem destined for prison.

Peak Oil

Aotearoa, 03.08.2004 05:03

From the Brisbane Indymedia newswire:

Remember the movie 'Independence Day'? How the alien ships arrived over major cities around the world and a countdown began towards apocalypse? Well that's kind of where we are today except the mainstream media and world governments are hiding the threat from view while the US regime under Bush 2 is running rampant across the globe to secure as much as it can before the news breaks worldwide. Apparently we've run out of cheap oil.

That's right a "peak" in oil production is on its way. And once it's here fuel price will rise dramatically.

Peak oil occurs when half the oil in the ground around the world has been pumped out.

This is a scary thing when one considers just how much we rely on petroleum for: Fuel, pesticides, fertilizers, clothes, power, medicines, plastic etc.

These factors a good argument for using public transport and also, surprisingly, vegetarianism - a pound of beef takes three quarters of a gallon of oil to produce.

As conventional oil supplies dwindle oil companies start to consider using deposits which are harder to exploit, such as the shale oil plant in Gladstone and tar-sand deposits in Canada.
