November 17th Brown Bag Event About Lynne Stewart's Case

San Francisco Bay Area, 11.11.2005 07:37

Radical human rights attorney Lynne Stewart was convicted of helping terrorists. She faces 30 years in prison. Attorneys feel that her arrest was meant as a signal to the defense bar to cease and desist zealous representation of persons criminalized by the government. They say that "With this conviction, the U.S. government attempts to silence dissent, curtail vigorous defense lawyers, and install fear in those who would fight against the U.S. government's racism, seek to help Arabs and Muslims being prosecuted for free speech, and defend the rights of all oppressed people." Stewart's sentencing date will take place on December 22nd, at 9:30am. A 9:00am rally will be held before the sentencing, at Thomas Paine Park, Worth St and Centre in New York City.

The New College National Lawyers Guild Chapter will be holding a "Brown Bag Event" Thursday, November 17th from 12:30pm to 2:00pm at New College of California School of Law, at 50 Fell Street, Room 212 in San Francisco. Speakers will include Jeff Mackler, West Coast Coordinator of the Lynne Stewart Defense Committee and Luke Hiken, from the Military Law Task Force of the National Lawyers Guild. They will address the constitutional issues that are raised by Stewart's case. Read more

Buy A WATT of Power- Radio CPR

DC, 11.11.2005 07:08

Greetings! We are 97.5 fm, your community powered radio. We love you. Radio CPR is a space that brings neighborhood people together to create our own news, tell our own stories and play soulful and ass-kicking music that you will hear nowhere else on this city’s radio dial. I’m writing to ask for your support so we can breathe stronger, new life into the airwaves. CPR needs a more powerful transmitter to boost our radio signal. This will cost us $3100, which is the amount we’re trying to raise. If you saw the equipment that currently keeps us on air, you’d laugh.

Tenncare Activists Disrupt Governor's Speech

Tennessee, 11.11.2005 06:09

#media_3820;left# Nashville, TN: On Tuesday, November 8th Tenncare Activists disrupted the Governor's speech to the Manufacturing Convention at the downtown Sheraton Hotel. The action, which was intended to heighten awareness of the affects of the Tenncare cuts to the Tennessee Economy, were at the beginning of the Governor's keynote speech to an audience of 400 business manutacturers. #media_3821;right#Pam Beziat, Tenncare Activist and former Tenncare Enrollee until she was cut off this summer, presented the Governor with a Tennessee "Bad for Business" award before she was escorted out of the "SHINGO" awards luncheon by plains clothed State Troopers. Another enrollee was unable to present the Governor with a Thank You award from the Tennessee Funeral Association. The Tenncare cuts have resulted in the deaths of several Tennesseans who were unable to receive crucial life saving medications, the activists contend.

Kentucky Based Grassroots Radio Show for Prisoners Expands Broadcast

Tennessee, 10.11.2005 22:09

What if media artists in the rural coalfields of Appalachia produced community radio in response to the growing number of prisons being built in their region? And what if the primarily urban prisoners and their families began working with the media artists and their friends to produce a program that speaks boldly and eloquently for human rights and justice? This is what is happening at the 36 year old regional media arts center Appalshop with its project Holler to the Hood (H2H). It was started in 1999 by two young media artists to confront the social impact of moving hundreds of thousands of inner-city, minority offenders to supermaximum security prisons in rural Virginia. Using a variety of mediums (live performance, radio, video, and digital) and forms (including a multi-media installation and a website), H2H provides the means for all those effected by the prison system to tell their story in their own voice.

Feds let Niger Forgery (Forgeries, see photos) pass. What else? 9/11?

Maine, 10.11.2005 22:07

The Bush administration exploited FAKE intelligence to sell Congress on the Iraq war. FAKE intelligence, not faulty intelligence. We show photos of the forgeries here and point out the glaring errors in them, so you can see for yourself. The CIA and intelligence community let the forgeries slip by until after the war started. Then Joe Wilson exposed the forgeries, and his wife, Valerie Plame, got outed to pay him back and shut him up. WHAT ELSE DID THEY LET SLIP BY? 9/11 MAYBE?

Paris is Burning: Racism and Repression Explode in Week of Uprisings

San Francisco Bay Area, 10.11.2005 19:37

On Thursday, October 27th, 2005, a group of 10 highschool kids were playing soccer in the Paris suburb of Clichy-sous-Bois. when police arrived to do ID checks, the kids ran away and hid, because some of them had no ID. Three of the children hid in an electrical transformer building of EDF and were electrocuted. Two of them died and a third, was severely injured. The mayor of Clichy, Claude Dilain, called for an enquiry into the deaths of the two boys. All eyes were on Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy. The response? As people were gathering in the mosques for the Night of Destiny, the most sacred night in the month of Ramadan, a night people usually spent at the mosque, the empty streets of the Cité du Chêne Pointu filled with about 400 CRS militant riot police and gendarmes, blocking off the neighborhood. Yet very few people allowed themselves to be provoked into breaking the sanctity of this night, despite racist insults from the police. On Sunday, however, provocation turned into outrage as the women's prayer room at de Bousquets mosque was teargassed by police. As people stumbled out gasping for air, the policemen called the women "whores", "bitches" and other insults.

Ever since that night, Clichy-sous-Bois has been burning, with the insurrection spreading on Monday to Seine-Saint-Denis and on Tuesday night (November 1st) to nine other Parisian suburbs. A week after the death of the two boys, the uprising is spreading throughout France.

A state of emergency was announced November 8, along with the call-up of police reservists, authorizing local governments to impose curfews and permits police to conduct raids and searches without warrants. Jose Bove has urged the French parliament to debate the root causes of crisis, describing the unrest as "a revolution by desperate youths who have lost all hopes." Muslim thinker Tareq Ramadan blamed the entire political class in France for the riots, saying the political class has been "blind" to what has been happening in the suburbs, with their unemployed youth of Arab and African origin and bleak high-rises. Bove has also asked Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy to apologize for his anti-immigrant remarks.

Recent High School Grad Wins Seat on School Board

San Francisco Bay Area, 10.11.2005 18:37

An eight-way race for three seats on the Northern Humboldt Union High School District Board resulted in the election of recent high school graduate Shane Brinton. Running on a progressive platform of “Education not Indoctrination,” Brinton opposes military recruiters in schools. “We need to be educating the future doctors and teachers of America, not sending them to die in Iraq or some future quagmire,” said Brinton.

Brinton is a life-long resident of Humboldt County, and has volunteered with many local groups, including Democracy Unlimited of Humboldt County, Humboldt Senior Resource Center, Humboldt County Democratic Central Committee, the Redwood Peace & Justice Center, the Placebo, Tenants Union of Humboldt County, Food Not Bombs, and as an assistant soccer coach for the Humboldt Youth Soccer League. Brinton recently represented the US as a delegate to the World Festival of Youth and Students in Venezuela, with 15,000 other young people.

Alpenrose Dairy goes rBGH free!

Portland, 10.11.2005 18:08

The family-owned independent dairy, based in Portland, has been a highly-respected fixture in the NW Oregon dairy scene since 1916. Since early 2004, Alpenrose, like all dairies in Oregon that still use rBGH, has received hundreds of consumer comments generated by Oregon PSR - post cards, e-mails, letters and phone calls -asking them to go rBGH-free.

Oregon PSR's Campaign For Safe Food has been communicating with Alpenrose, and showed their Power Point on rBGH, discussing the problems that rBGH presents. In addition, the campaign has been contacting grocery stores and coffee shops regarding concerns with rBGH, and some of them have in turn relayed these concerns to Alpenrose. In August this year, a large parochial school in Beaverton, discontinued their milk contract with Alpenrose. This followed Oregon PSR's Power Point presentation to the principal and food service director and expressions of concern led by a parent/PSR volunteer. In addition, PSR volunteers had made initial contacts with the Portland Public Schools, which serves Alpenrose milk, expressing their concern with rBGH.

Alpenrose now becomes the third Oregon-based dairy since 2003 to go rBGH-free. Tillamook announced that its cheese (not other products) would be rBGH-free as of April 1 and Eberhard announced it was going rBGH-free in June.

Sisters of the Road to Celebrate 26th Anniversary

Portland, 10.11.2005 05:38

Sisters of the Road Cafe which serves Portland's destitute through barter trade for meals will close at 1pm Friday Nov. 11 to prepare for the celebration and will re-open for an anniversary party 5-9pm which will include music and refreshments.

At Sister of the Road, poor people trade their labor washing dishes and serving food, among other tasks, at a rate of $6.00 per hour for hot meals that sell for $1.25 per plate. Their ability to accept EBT food stamps for hot meals is unprecedented in Oregon state which adheres to the draconian Federal standard which allows EBT food stamps users to buy only uncooked and unprepared foods.

Sisters of the Road Cafe is no ordinary soup kitchen. Their menu is both hearty and healthy. Perhaps their most unique aspect is their expessed intention to build positive social relations between the poor whom they serve and the service provider. Their motto is: "In here there are no strangers...just friends we've never met."
