Social Security Card Burn

New Hampshire, 12.11.2005 23:09

When Social Security was first foisted on America, the cards were imprinted with, "Not to be used for Identification." People were wary of the tyranny involved with a national ID card, so the government had to promise that the Social Security number would never be used for ID.

Sen. Gregg's social spending cuts pass the Senate

New Hampshire, 12.11.2005 23:09

NH Sen. Judd Gregg has seen success in his plans to cut social spending on student loans, Medicare and Medicaid. Senate bill 1932, The Deficit Omnibus Reconciliation Act, sponsored by Senator Gregg, was narrowly approved by the full senate in a 52-47 vote on Nov. 3. The bill will reduce government spending on social programs by $36 billion over the next five years.

Smullin Pulls The Plug on Walmart Movie

Rogue Valley, 12.11.2005 22:38

Plans for Sunday's premier film screening of "Walmart: The Higher Cost of Lower Price" were rudely interrupted Friday morning 11/11/05 when ASANTE announced that the reservation for Smullin Center was cancelled. All our plans for the movie screening were nullified. They indicated that the reason for the shutdown was that Smullin Center usage was limited to Health Care Issues ONLY.

Multnomah County's ITAX Record Problem?

Portland, 12.11.2005 22:38

Beware! I don't know if I'm one of the lucky few to get a letter from Multnomah County, demanding a 2004 ITAX payment that was already paid months ago. But if you haven't kept records or you don't recall if you already paid it, better check. This notice arrived in today's mail.

When I received the letter, which basicly treated me as though I had not paid the Multnomah County tax and demanded payment and response by November 8th or December 8th (depending upon which statement in the letter you chose to believe), I went to my 2004 tax file, pulled my photocopies of the check and the form and confirmed with my bank that the check made out to Multnomah County had been cashed long ago.

Do we have tenant rights in Portland?

Portland, 12.11.2005 22:38

My landlord evicted me, entered my property to remove all of my belongings, locked me out of the property, is now threatening to throw my stuff to the curb and I can't find anyone to assist me.

I'm a good tenant. I have always paid my rent on time, I mind my own business and I respect the property that I live on.

However, in the middle of last month I received a handwritten note from my landlord asking me to move by the end of the month. One other woman was asked to leave at the same time. The landlord told her he was kicking out all of the women in the coming months, which he later referred to as a "band of lesbians".

It was my understanding that even though he asked me to move by the 31st, I legally had thrity days. This being said, you can only imagine how shocked I was to walk into the building on the 1st to find that my stuff had been removed from my apartment and there was already someone living there! Landlords' Rights ... An Update

Finding professional assistance has been and still is an uphill battle. I still don't have a lawyer, but thanks to the supportive responses from those of you who have also been in this position, I have a few more leads to follow.

My fear? I fear that I am devoting almost all of my energy to this and will get nothing in return.

I fear that it takes money to find justice. I know that I am not the woman this landlord has treated this way. Perhaps if one of those women had stood up for her rights I would not be in this position. I can't blame her though ... if I had a place to live I probably wouldn't care much either.

For the "City That Works" I don't see a lot working for the people in my position. There are a lot of people willing to speak to what the law states and few people willing to enforce it ... unless the issue is liquor laws, or drug laws, laws that protect business ... or the laws that protect the landlords. Two Anarchists And A Drunk With A Dog Meet The Taoiseach

Ireland, 12.11.2005 22:07

"he is intent on treating us like thick kids or perhaps smart dogs -I am not sure which" Today the Taoiseach was once again doing what he does best –making meaningless but reassuring remarks. In an article in today's Irish Independent Bertie insisted that the US military’s use of Shannon does not make Ireland a potential target of Islamist terror. Whatever the truth of this is Bertie’s longstanding strategy of actively supporting the US military while attempting to portray himself as a neutral party is fooling noone least of all the Pitstop Ploughshares who are now facing yet another retrial. Below is an account of a chance meeting with the Taoiseach and his inimitable political style. Extract: An idea or rather an image bubbles up in my head of a human being held in one of the prisons for captives in the “War on Terror” - their sense of self slowly disintegrating under the pressure of uncertainity, torture and fear. I try to articulate what I think about Guantanamo. My heart is pounding and I am stabbing the air with my finger. Meanwhile the same lackey is continuing to repeat his demand that we condemn Republican violence. This is absurd. I had expected grubby debating society tricks, oily pragmatism and weasel words but I wasn’t ready for such lazy contempt and a sheer inability or unwillingmess to argue for the merits of his decision on refuelling at Shannon. Unexpectedly one of the retinue makes a coherent point about the plight of the Kurds and I begin talking to him. Bertie is still looking up and down the street though and his prayers are answered in the form of a beetroot faced man with a bristling moustache, a stocky little black dog and more than a couple of jars inside him. Complete Article As Submitted To Indymedia Ireland Today the Taoiseach was once again doing what he does best –making meaningless but reassuring remarks. Late on a Saturday morning a beefy, self-satisfied middle-aged man carrying a golfing umbrella knocked on the door to my north inner city flat. He tells me with more than a little pride that the Taoiseach is meeting and greeting his constituents and being one of that lucky number I was being invited to meet the great man. Foggy headed and tired I just want to return to my lair and I decline his offer. I go back in and tell my girlfriend that Bertie is out and about. She immediately proposes that we go and share some of our gripes about the military use of Shannon so we decide to go and meet the Taoiseach We go out and he is now twenty metres up the road. His entourage is calling in on my neighbours and asking if they want to meet the Red Tsar. Nearly everybody is just resignedly taking the leaflet, nodding politely and closing their doors- there are shopping lists to compile, hangovers to nurse, kitchens to clean, We cross the road and there he is- a bit like what you see on TV just a little more rotund and shorter. The face is so familiar that you feel you know him. It is an unusual face like something from a cheap Irish version of the Muppet show -a face that is at once sheepish and cunning. Up close I can see tiny broken veins across the bridge of his nose and this briefly endears him to me. He grins and despite all the illusions I like to entertain about myself I feel a little bit nervous and bit awkward. He greets us and we explain that we are not happy with Shannon being used to refuel US warplanes. He says that it is good that Saddam is gone but “I am anti-war” and if “we had our way the war wouldn’t of happened”. When this rather open and inclusive version of what constitutes anti-war activity doesn’t mollify us he explains that the High Court has judged US refuelling to be legal. I am getting a bit irritated and I am surprised at myself I thought this exchange would be fairly superficial and breezy and I am not making my points very well. N is doing a much better job she is asking him about Iraqi civilians and in response to this Bertie is talking about all the people killed by Saddam. The conversation is lurching around and I realise that he is just throwing out lines that he thinks might placate us. . The whole thing is a bit like that playground trick where you point at something non-existent in the distance in order to distract someone and take their ball or crisps or whatever. In fact as the conversation continues it becomes clear that he is intent on treating us like thick kids or perhaps smart dogs -I am not quite sure which. I say that Shannon has been used to ship detainees bound for Guantanamo and torture. He flatly denies this. “I am anti-war” he says again and grins nervously at us and then some finely honed political instinct tells him that because we haven’t just dropped the matter we have to belong to some parliamentary party or other and are really just trying to score points. He goes on the offensive Bertie style “I am anti war and I am anti-Provo and I am anti-UVF” I think guessing, incorrectly, that we are members of Sinn Fein. The sheer inanity of this remark is making me feel even more annoyed. N is talking to him about sensory deprivation techniques used in Guantanomo and he grins, looks left and then looks right. His only response to the stubborn, awful facts of war and human rights abuse seems to be placid arrogance. One of the men with golfing umbrellas pipes up for his boss with “you should condemn the murder of innocent people on your own shore!” Obviously he sniffs Fenianism at the bottom of all this as well. N says that is not what we are talking about. An idea or rather an image bubbles up in my head -of a human being held in one of the prisons for captives in the “War on Terror” their sense of self slowly disintegrating under the pressure of uncertainity, torture and fear. This man with a dog is delighted to see Bertie and he enthusiastically pumps his hand “Hi ya Bertie. Hi ya Bertie. You are a great man Bertie” Bertie greets him, relieved he is once again a friend of the people. This man has overheard some of our conversation and he is not impressed-he is going to defend Bertie from the slings and arrows of unwarranted criticism He also has his own very individual method for debating the pro and cons of the war in Iraq. He bellows at us “You should go to the North Wall”.At this stage I am unsure if this is a very cunning insult or a reference to some piece of injustice closer to home. He shouts at us again. Bertie is still grinning. “They are coming in on pallettes in the North Wall. The refugees are coming in on pallettes on the North Wall”. Improbable as this is it is clearly not a good thing as far as he is concerned and he wants action now. Bertie plays safe with his fan and says nothing. After witnessing the most powerful politician in Ireland mount a defence for the State’s support of US refuelling that would not convince a weak minded child I am depressed and angry We begin to walk away. I am wasting my time I am not doing anyone any favours- least of all for the people of Iraq.. Bertie clearly couldn’t care less about Iraq or my badly expressed objection to Irish complicity with the US war effort and I don’t want to now start arguing with a bellowing racist pickled in booze. Bertie’s fan thinks we are walking away because we are scared and encouraged by this he follows us screaming about immigrants and insulting us. He takes a new tack “Get a job. Get a fucking job”. I want to say to him “now? but this is my day off ” but something tells me taking the piss might also be a waste of time. I turn and look up the street and Bertie is walking away in the other direction and I realise that two disgruntled anarchists who don’t vote and one happy-to-be-angry racist are the only people who want to talk to the Taoiseach on my whole street. God bless common sense. http://www.indymedia.ie/attachments/nov2005/confusedblackdog.jpg

Eat Anjem Choudary Hot Worm Stew: Why The Irish Public Has To Swallow The Hard Truth About War

Ireland, 12.11.2005 21:07

Neutrality Schmeutrality: Islamic Radical Tells It Like It Is. Deal With It. Anjem Choudary (also known as Omar Bakri Muhammad), a Muslim cleric born in Syria and who participated in the 1982 revolution against the Syrian Ba'athist regime to be later given political asylum in the UK spoke at a debate in Trinity College on Thursday night. Choudary is well known for his extremist Islamic views and was leader of Al-Muhajiroun, an organisation whose eventual goal was to prepare the way for a global Islamic theocracy. Extract: Choudary's remarks pointed out something in blunt terms which anti war campaigners have been saying since 2001, when it became common knowledge that Shannon was being used as a refuelling base for US warplanes. He said that "if you allow Ireland to be used to refuel US warplanes which are going on bombing raids, what do you expect the reaction of the Muslim world to be? This is not neutrality. It is better for the Muslim world to tell you this reality, so we can change this situation, and to make sure what is taking place in other countries will not happen here in Ireland." His remarks were in the context of his argument that Ireland is open to attack by terrorist groups, because of its support for the Bush administration's war on terror. Complete Text of Article as Submitted to Indymedia Ireland: Islamic radical tells it like it is. Deal with it. So predictably the remarks made by Anjem Choudary during a debate last night in Trinity College Dublin, hosted by the Philosophical Society ("The Phil", dont you know) have sparked off something of a minor outrage among politicians and sections of our reactionary media. He was speaking along with several other prominent Muslim figures (see the event posted in the calendar here: http://www.indymedia.ie/newswire.php?story_id=72909) on the motion that "this house believes 9/11 was a legitimate form of resistance of American pressure to the Islamic world." The Phil, along with its opposite number in UCD, the L&H, enjoys courting controversial figures and putting on debates to provoke and stir shit up, outwardly for lofty ideals, but mostly because they're a pack of college 'wags' and this is just another notch in their belt to make it seem like they're "loike, so crazy, man". If you've ever had the misfortune to attend one of these debates, the level of intellectual rigour practised by the 'regulars' hovers somewhere in the vague childish student spectrum of society in-jokes, cheap witticisms of sparse wit, and smutty double entendres to compensate for the fact that following the free drink reception afterwards, they'll all be far too shitfaced to have sex. Choudary's remarks pointed out something in blunt terms which anti war campaigners have been saying since 2001, when it became common knowledge that Shannon was being used as a refuelling base for US warplanes. What is so unpalatable about those remarks? Is it because the truth hurts? 100,000 people showed up on the streets of Dublin nearly 3 years ago to protest against the looming war on Iraq - and to call for the end of Shannon as a refuelling base. Other towns and cities in Ireland (and beyond, all around the world) also staged large antiwar marches, the like of which have not been seen since. Yet the war began anyway. And Shannon is still being used as a refuelling base. And for all the guff spouted by certain groups about a new movement emerging at the time of the F15 marches, those people never, ever came back out onto the streets again or got involved in antiwar activities. So presumably there are a large body of people out there who read the papers every day, listen to the radio, or watch TV - who were on those marches or supported them at the time. RTE and O'Reilly's empire are not Indymedia; but occasionally there are stories about Shannon, the number of troops passing through there, the Catholic Worker trial, the CIA torture plane landing, statements from TDs about neutrality, etc. Those people know that this country is being used as an instrument of war. Is there a feeling of guilt out there? That people know, deep down in their hearts and minds, that neutrality has been breached but they cant be bothered doing anything about it? Perhaps not, but this might explain the knee-jerk reaction to Choudary's remarks. The bottom line is: we have become involved in a war. Not just any war: George Bush's global war on terror. A vague, endless, structureless war that encompasses a fight against a strategy rather than your standard enemy of a state or faction. By allowing his planes and troops to stop here, we are on his side. There are other people out there, also religious fundamentalists who see their struggle as an eternal battle between good and evil. They are equally determined to fight. Its obvious to anyone who thinks for more than half a second that neither side particularly values human life. We are placing a knife into the hand of one side of a row that has essentially nothing to do with us. We are an accessory to the US war machine, and the sooner we openly admit that to ourselves then we can begin to face the fact that we are open to retaliation from the other side for our actions. For too long we've skated on the thin ice of our reputation as being neutral or even somewhat vaguely revolutionary in far off places because of the "northern struggle". Ken Bigley and Margaret Hassan tried to negotiate their lives on the standing of the state in the Muslim world, and unfortunately this failed them. Remarks at the time about Shannon/Ireland being part of the UK/US alliance were played down by politicians, and dismissed as dangerous for putting the lives of hostages at further risk. Rory Carroll's abduction ended happily, but how long can we trade on the flimsy notion of not being involved in the "coalition of the willing"? Choudary's statements havent opened a can of worms, he's merely scooped the worms out and made them into a very bitter stew that we have to collectively swallow. Do we want war on our doorstep? Imagine your rural village or town flattened by a MOAB or Daisy Cutter. Every single person you know is dead or injured. Or perhaps you wake up in the middle of the night and your skin is burning, you cant breathe, and your last memory is the cries of your family - just like the use of chemical weapons on Fallujah. But it seems that Westerners cannot relate to deaths in the Middle East or identify fully with people who live in different conditions to their own. So lets put it in terms we understand - the people of London and Madrid have seen this with their own eyes. You're on a crowded DART with your friends, enjoying the trip into town to get some food and go to the cinema - when suddenly there's a hot, sickly flash of light and a noise that splits your ears open. Each of your nerves scream with the intense heat and pain. You eventually open your eyes and there are pieces of bodies everywhere. Arms, legs, heads, fingers, genitals - all fused together in a filthy mesh of blood, flesh, metal and tears. Old and young are turned inside out, destroyed in seconds. All around you are the dead and dying, praying, crying, calling for help that may not arrive in time. This is what war means. We either end our participation in war and make a strong, loud, defiant affirmation of peaceful resolution and call for the destruction of all arms - or we continue to support war and become victims of it ourselves. We either stop the CIA torture plane landing at Shannon - or we may have to endure the torture of losing people we love and care for. We either make our neutrality a reality instead of a half-baked concept - or we accept that we are just as much a target as any of the other participants in this conflict. War is not some abstract geopolitical game, its a brutal reality that kills people just like you and me. It has taken a Muslim fundamentalist to stir up debate, but we have been in this situation before. Maybe it will take an attack on innocent people on our own soil before we digest the truth. http://www.indymedia.ie/attachments/nov2005/iraqichildwithtubes.jpg

AUDIO FILE: Bark Hike To The Hipo Timber Sale

Portland, 12.11.2005 19:38

The October Bark Field trip was to the Hipo timber sale, one of four sales sold as part of the Hilynx Timber Sale.. The Hipo Sales, which are in the White River watershed of the Barlow Ranger District have already been logged, and though called a thinning project, resemble more a clear cut.

Join Bark this Sunday for a different kind of Bark-about. Sunday, November 13 at 8:45 AM. Traditionally Bark has focused on logging as the primary threat to our public wildlands and forest ecosystem. However, a primary threat is not to be confused with a solitary threat. Our experienced volunteer hike leader Laurele has worked on many grazing projects in the past and is full of information to keep your mind stimulated. On this unique hike, we will examine the recently released Long Prairie Grazing project area and use the trip to investigate the issues raised by cattle grazing in the Mt. Hood National Forest. Just as many people don't realize that logging occurs in our National Forests, so are many unaware that cattle are imported to the forest with potentially severe consequences to the ecosystem, wildlands and waterways.

Armistice Day with Vets for Peace

Portland, 12.11.2005 13:38

Members of Veterans for Peace commonly observe federal holidays among themselves, but this time were joined by approximately 60 others: friends, students, other activists, and strangers passing by, who were encouraged at the end to sign on to a movement to ask Governor Ted Kulongoski to recognize "Armistice Day" in 2006.

A pair of empty combat boots, worn but highly shined, stood at attention in the middle of the circle at 11:11 AM as the veterans opened with a two-minute silence followed by the playing of "Taps". In this wide circle, veterans and non-veterans alike were then invited to step into the center to share their thoughts and feelings on this day of remembrance in an open forum.

Grant Remington, President of Veterans for Peace Chapter 72, started out by reminding the assembled circle of the origins of Armistice Day, and its significant ties to remembrance and peace. Quoting President Dwight Eisenhower in 1954, people were reminded to "reconsecrate ourselves to the task of promoting an enduring peace."

“DROP THE G8 CHARGES” DEMANDS DEFENDANTS SOLIDARITY GROUP

Scotland, 12.11.2005 13:08

The July 2005 Solidarity Group and Scotland Against Criminalising Communities (SACC) have united to condemn the police publication of G8 'Wanted' photos. The photos were taken during the Carnival for Full Enjoyment, an anti G8 demo which came under attack from a huge force of riot police. The Carnival - organised to oppose wage, benefits, debt and Army slavery - was warmly received by many Edinburgh citizens who joined the festivities in numbers and were quick to condemn 'heavy handed policing ' in its aftermath. Festival goers were attacked by baton wielding officers and police horse charges - as demonstrators held their ground a stramash ensued. SACC and July 2005 Solidarity have pledged support to all arrested during the G8 protests and are demanding that all the charges be dropped. On 21st October, two women arrested at the Carnival were found not guilty, after recounting how they were violently assaulted by riot police.

Vandals Try To Destroy Santa Cruz Coastal Rail Trail

Santa Cruz, CA, 12.11.2005 13:08

A post on Santa Cruz Indymedia earlier today (11/11/05) stated, "A group of workers from the [Union Pacific] railroad came on 11/10/05 to the newly built trail next to the railroad tracks near Almar. They used a grader to tear up the volunteer-built trail as to render it difficult to ride a bike on. They also took down the "welcome" signs. Too bad!"
From: Rail Trail - Almar Ave

I rode my bike to the Coastal Rail Trail off Almar on the Westside of Santa Cruz and came across a sad scene of willful and vengeful destruction of an important community resource.

GhostCycle.org: Raising Vehicle Driver Awareness

Portland, 12.11.2005 11:38

Walking down the street a few months back, I noticed a visibly mangled bicycle with white-washed and twisted tires and frame, chained to a lamppost with the sign, "Ghostcycle.org #39" hanging on it. Curious, I went to GhostCycle.org and found it is a "bike accident awareness" organization. GhostCycle is a Seattle project that could be mimicked in any city. The group solicits stories online from bicyclists who have had accidents revolving around interactions with cars on Seattle streets, primarily. The site tells the story of a bicyclist's accident, and then a memorial broken bike is placed on the spot of the accident. The bikes are painted an eerie white, and the tires are contorted and completely painted white, too, which really works well for a "ghostly" effect.

bike sadness adds: There have been about nine or ten Ghost Bike memorials put up in the last few weeks in Portland. Yes, there is one at NE Sandy & 37th. Yes, there is a plan to replace the SW Broadway memorial, though memorials downtown probably won't fare well. Coming soon: ghostcyclepdx.org, with photos and info on all the local memorials plus features for reporting crashes, dangerous intersections, etc.

True Cop Confessions

Portland, 12.11.2005 11:38

In a recent posting, we heard from "I was there" who claimed to be one of the cops who shot and killed Fouad Kaady. This got me to thinking: What if we had a truly informative exchange with cops (reformed or otherwise) who feel the need to purge their guilt?

As a former cop, with many years of high stress experience, I do understand the need for the officer to cover his ass with bland statements like "I would do it again," and to protect his ego and his job by creating some imaginary bogey man with the strength of ten, to somehow justify the killing. I feel his pain. I have been very close to his shoes a number of times. Fortunately for me, I chose the "protect" part of my oath over the self preserving need to kill all threats. When I think of the number of persons I could have killed, I am very glad that I no longer am faced with the challenge that these guys face.

Pirate and FCC Activity in San Diego

San Diego, 12.11.2005 07:09

California: there's been lots happening in San Diego. 106.9FM has voluntary signed off after running out of funds to broadcast. According to the station blog it's hoped the hiatus is only temporary. Meanwhile Free Radio San Diego returned to the air over Halloween weekend, three months after it was raided and cleaned out by the FCC. The signal strength is reportedly much weaker.

San Diego has also recently been the site of some serious FCC enforcement involving other forms of unlicensed operation. Specifically, the use of point-to-point microwave radio communications between corporations in the San Diego area and "sister companies" located over the U.S.-Mexico border in Tijuana. The FCC has issued 11 Notices of Apparent Liability against 10 companies, seeking to collect a total of $86,000.

CompanyProposed Fine
Anderson Desk Company$10,000
International Customs Brokers$4,000
Kojo Worldwide Corporation$10,000
Lamkin Corporation$4,000
More Enterprises Communications Network$10,000
Norman Krieger Incorporated$4,000
Pacific Spanish Network, Incorporated$10,000
Pacnet Incorporated$10,000 / $10,000
Tocabi America Corporation$4,000
Uniradio Corporation$10,000

The range in size of proposed fines is primarily based on whether or not a company held a pre-existing license to the sort of radio system they were operating. Most of the dinged companies actually market stuff, like desks, cabinetry, fabrics, and golf grips. They most likely use radio links to communicate sales and order data from the U.S. to production factories in Mexico. Two are transport concerns, tasked to the haulage of stuff cross-border.

However, More Enterprises and Uniradio actually operate radio stations, licensed in Mexico but controlled across the border via unauthorized studio-to-transmitter links. This adds to San Diego's unique history of unorthodox radio piracy.

War criminal traitor Ron Wyden votes to eliminate Habeas Corpus

Portland, 12.11.2005 00:38

Mr. Wyden voted in the Senate to approve an unconstitutional law that purports to strip prisoners of Habeas Corpus rights recently upheld by the Supreme Court. The move amounts to an unconstitutional attempted power grab by the legislative on behalf of the executive branch to wrest power from judges to decide basic constitutional questions.

Ron Wyden violated his oath of office to defend and uphold the US Constitution yesterday, by voting for a law which purports to strip judges of the ability to decide the legality of arbitrary detentions of people arbitrarily labelled "enemy combatants" by Texas ex-governor GW Bush Jr. and his hirelings. In this time when our rights are so endangered by high-level criminals acting under color of illegitimate authority, Wyden has voted to give more power to the criminals.

Wyden Votes to DENY Habeaus to anyone Bush calls 'enemy combatant'

Wyden voted today to bar anyone at the U.S. prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, from filing lawsuits in American courts to challenge their detentions, despite a Supreme Court ruling last year that granted such access.

In a 49-42 vote, senators added the provision by Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., to a sweeping defense policy bill.

Under the provision, Guantanamo Bay prisoners would be allowed to appeal their status as an "enemy combatant" one time, to the Circuit Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C. But they would not be able to file petitions known as writs of habeas corpus, which are used to fight unlawful detentions, in that or any other U.S. court.

Report back from fur protest (for liberator Peter Young)

Portland, 12.11.2005 00:38

On November 8, approximately 30 protestors let Schumacher furs (811 SW Morrison) and Nicholas Ungar furs (1137 SW Yamhill) and their customers know what they thought of their shameful participation in animal cruelty. The proprietors and employees of Schumacher's watched, sometimes smirking, sometimes seemingly dumbfounded, as the protestors called attention to the reality of how fur used for clothing is obtained.

Protestors held signs, passed out literature, and vocally let people know how wild fur-bearing animals are caught in steel-jaw leghold traps (left for up to a week, sometimes dying of cold and dehydration, not uncommonly chewing off their own limbs in an attempt to get free); and how wild caged animals like mink go crazy from stress, confinement, and boredom until they are finally anally electrocuted for their fur. Dogs and cats in China are slaughtered for their pelts (which are mislabeled and sold in the US). But the proprietors of these fur shops, and their bloated customers, seemed wholly unconcerned by what happens to the animals.

Hangings Outside the Shell Centre for Ogoni Day

United Kingdom, 12.11.2005 00:38

In November 1995, nigerian writer and activist Ken Saro-Wiwa and 8 of his colleagues, were executed by Nigeria's military regime for campaigning against the devastation of the Niger delta by oil multi-national Shell. Yesterday, activists from London Rising Tide and supporters dropped nine nooses infront of the Shell UK headquarters on London's South Bank to highlight the anniversary of Saro-Wiva's murder. The demonstrators also highlighted the current struggle on the north west of Ireland, where Shell is set to transform a remote conservation area in County Mayo into an environmental disaster zone which carries serious public health and safety implications.
