Portland, 14.11.2005 17:08

Did you know....
1. 80% of all votes in America are counted by only two companies: Diebold and ES&S.

2. There is no federal agency with regulatory authority or oversight of the U.S. voting machine industry.

3. The vice-president of Diebold and the president of ES&S are brothers.

November 17th??

Portland, 14.11.2005 17:08

With much talk about future protests, in numerous occasions, people have mentioned November 17th. So the question is, is there going to be a protest on November 17th? If so, where and when? There is a lot of angry people out there and January 20th is too long away for the next anti-bush protest.

comment:Here's some info. National "Not Your Soldier" Youth and Student Day of Action, Thursday November 17/18th at a high school or college campus near you.... Are military recruiters invading your schools and using promises of scholarships and career opportunities to convince your friends to join the military? You are not alone! On November 17, International Students Day, join youth and students from around the country in the first nationally coordinated day of action for and about young people! NOT YOUR SOLDIER!

United For Peace announcement | Another UFP article | National Youth & Students for Peace Coalition | Flyer

Comment: Another important note: Recruiters Near You. I will stress to people not to rely on some big organized protest to vent there anger at the system, with no defined goal. Biggest question that I think needs addressing in this movement RIGHT NOW is, What is Non-violence and what is violence?

Join the O2 Collective For a Relief Trip to New Orleans!

Portland, 14.11.2005 17:08

The Oxygen Collective is organizing a trip in our biodiesel bus for the first three weeks of December to bring supplies and volunteers to offer direct aid and relief work for people in the New Orleans area. We will be joining with an inspiring grassroots effort spearheaded by the Common Ground Collective in the Algiers Neighborhood. The folks at Common Ground are engaged in many amazingly inspirational projects, but they are stretched thin and are desperately in need of people on the ground to help them. The Common Ground Collective operates a health clinic that serves thousands, an fm radio station bringing news and information to the Greater New Orleans Area and two supply distribution centers, including the only relief center located in the heavily damaged 9th Ward District. They also serve as the central hub of the grassroots, anti racist community organizing effort occurring in Southern Louisiana. They play a crucial advocacy role for the empowerment of poorer residents facing a deeply entrenched racist system that is in many cases marginalizing and neglecting people rather than helping them return to their homes. Our plan is to leave Southern Oregon on Dec. 3rd, completing the journey by Dec. 22nd at the latest. Please contact oso@o2collective.org or laurel@o2collective.org for more info or to pass along useful contacts, make a donation or volunteer to come along.

November 15 - Protest Howard's Attack on Australian Workers

Aotearoa, 14.11.2005 04:08

The Australian Trade Union movement will be holding a national day of community protest on November 15. The protest may eclipse former union rallies, including the huge protest against Government's industrial relations reforms on 30 June 2005. The Howard government’s IR changes and anti-terrorist legislation are closely linked and are in keeping with the political behaviour of Australian conservatism in government. The new Sedition Laws suggest that industrial disputes or industrial matters may be labelled seditious, where there is an absence of "good faith". The reforms further push Australian Workplace Agreements, with the right to strike effectively being lost, while employer use of lockouts is encouraged. Solidarity rallies will be held in Wellington and Auckland. November 17th Brown Bag Event About Lynne Stewart's Case

San Francisco Bay Area, 13.11.2005 20:07

Radical human rights attorney Lynne Stewart was convicted of helping terrorists. She faces 30 years in prison. Attorneys feel that her arrest was meant as a signal to the defense bar to cease and desist zealous representation of persons criminalized by the government. They say that "With this conviction, the U.S. government attempts to silence dissent, curtail vigorous defense lawyers, and install fear in those who would fight against the U.S. government's racism, seek to help Arabs and Muslims being prosecuted for free speech, and defend the rights of all oppressed people." Stewart's sentencing date will take place on December 22nd, at 9:30am. A 9:00am rally will be held before the sentencing, at Thomas Paine Park, Worth St and Centre in New York City.

The New College National Lawyers Guild Chapter will be holding a "Brown Bag Event" Thursday, November 17th from 12:30pm to 2:00pm at New College of California School of Law, at 50 Fell Street, Room 212 in San Francisco. Speakers will include Jeff Mackler, West Coast Coordinator of the Lynne Stewart Defense Committee and Luke Hiken, from the Military Law Task Force of the National Lawyers Guild. They will address the constitutional issues that are raised by Stewart's case. Read more

Colombian Coca-Cola Worker Tours US to Expose Coke's Labor Abuses

San Francisco Bay Area, 13.11.2005 06:07

William Mendoza, who is a Coca-Cola worker and Vice President of SINALTRAINAL (Food and Beverage Workers' Union) in Colombia and Amit Srivastava, Coordinator of India Resource Center, will be speaking on Monday, November 14th from 12pm to 2pm at San Francisco State University, and from 7pm to 9pm at UC Berkeley. They will speak about the growing campaign against the Coca-Cola company for its violations of human rights, workers’ rights, and the environment in Colombia, India and globally. Details

On Friday, November 18th, a protest will be held at the entrance of the "World of Coca-Cola" in Atlanta, Georgia. An international movement for justice and human rights will come together to expose the Coca-Cola Company for murder, torture, pollution, and union-busting throughout the world. At 12pm there will be a rally and press conference with William Mendoza. Mendoza has been on a national speaking tour with United Students Against Sweatshops. This protest comes at the beginning of a weekend of actions in Fort Benning, Georgia to demand the closure of the School of the Americas.

Organizers say that they believe that they are at a turning point in the campaign to hold Coke accountable for violence in Colombia, India, Turkey, Indonesia and Guatemala. Activists say that Coke has been trying to discredit the union SINALTRAINAL in Colombia and grassroots movements in India and elswhere, and also to deflate the global student movement. Since 1986, roughly 4,000 Colombian trade unionists have been murdered. Most of these murders have been committed by right-wing paramilitary groups, known as death squads, on an ideological mission to destroy the labor movement. These groups often work in collaboration with the U.S.- supported Colombian military, and in some instances with managers at plants producing for multinational corporations. In the case of Coca-Cola, the company and its business partners have turned a blind eye to, financially supported, and actively colluded with paramilitary groups in efforts to destroy workers' attempts to organize unions and bargain collectively.

PDX IMC Tech Benefit: Report Back

So if you missed the benefit, you really missed a good time. The vibe was great. $2.00 beers and vary diverse bands. The "Fuck The Corporate Media" and "Novus Ordo Nuntius Seclorum" hand printed T-shirts and posters were awesome. I think there are still some for sale, but I think quite a few were sold. The amount raised was not quite enough to buy the new server(s), but it was a couple a hundred shy. So, it may take a while longer, but this site and all other supported social justice sites should be operating much faster and smoother in the not too distant future. [ read more ]
