Eureka Recruiting Center Shut Down

San Francisco Bay Area, 21.11.2005 01:37

On November 18th, the Eureka Military Recruiting Center was shut down for the day by approximately 200 protesters. Present at the protest were students, peace groups, Buddhists meditating for peace and people young and old who are disgusted with Bush’s war for oil. Participation in this sparsely populated area was high, partly in protest of police brutality and the arrest of four cyclist on route to an earlier war protest. Like the earlier protest, a CHP helicopter brought in from Redding circled overhead and police used scare tactics with the presence of rubber bullet weapons and tear gas launchers. No arrests were made but at least 6 harassment citations were given to protesters for such things as riding a bicycle on the sidewalk and obstructing traffic. Read More

National Stand Down Day - An Inspiring Action!

Santa Cruz, CA, 20.11.2005 21:08

Just as the U.S. Senate is coming out of the closet with bold voices against this war, it seems like everyday people across the nation are becoming more vocal about their opposition to this war. This Friday -- in Capitola and all over the United States -- people took time out of their schedules for National Stand Down Day in a statement against this illegal war.

Report: World Summit On Information Society

San Diego, 20.11.2005 21:08

The second part of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) was held from November 16 to 18 in Tunis, Tunisia. The first part was held in 2003 in Geneva. Xavier Leonard of the non-profit Heads on Fire traveled to Tunis from San Diego to participate in this summit. This post contains a video that the SDIMC did some minor editing on and a report from Xavier's blog. I met with Xavier at a presentation he did prior to going to the summit. He stressed the importance of being involved with this process to insure that access to the internet and other communication is a right for the people of the world.

Twenty Thousand Gather at the Gates of Fort Benning to Shut Down the SOA

Tennessee, 20.11.2005 20:08

On the morning after a record crowd of 16,000 (Columbus Police estimate!) attended Saturday’s rally at the gates of Ft. Benning to protest the School of the Americas\Western Hemispheric Institute for Security Cooperation, an early morning crowd waited with anticipation for an even larger turnout expected at the annual vigil and civil disobedience. About 100 members of Veterans for Peace and Iraq Veterans for Peace marched in chanting an antiwar cadence to open the ceremonies. They were followed by a group from a Buddhist dojo that had been walking from Atlanta to Ft. Benning since Nov. 12.

A Former Fort Benning Ranger Renounces Violence at the SOA

Tennessee, 20.11.2005 16:08

In August of 1985, my dad pinned a Ranger tab on my shoulder to signify my graduation from US Army Ranger school here at Fort Benning. I have carried this Ranger tab in my wallet for the last 20 years. I stand before you today with this Ranger tab, a picture of me when my dad pinned on the tab, and my Ranger handbook. I am tossing these items over the gates of Fort Benning to symbolically renounce attachment to material things, the violence in myself and the violence of my government.

The So-Called Lozells Riots

United Kingdom, 20.11.2005 15:07

Over the weekend of 22-23 October 2005, the Lozells district of Birmingham witnessed unprecedented violence between Asian and Afro-Caribbean youths. And while some, on both sides, were quick to exploit the events for their own agendas, ordinary people from both communities were equally let down by the police, the mainstream media and self-styled 'community leaders'.

Needless to say, the problem is very sensitive and controversial; it involves a wide range of issues, from racial relationships to socioeconomic structures. It was often difficult to get balanced accounts of the events from local people without falling into exaggerations, arbitrary accusations and prejudgments. Nonetheless, here is an attempt to understand what happened, how and why.

Southern Oregonians Announce Plans to Travel to New Orleans for Hurricane Relief

Portland, 20.11.2005 14:38

The /a>Oxygen Collective, an Ashland, OR-based non-profit organization, and the newly formed Southern Oregon Gulf Coast Relief Network today announced plans to travel to New Orleans in early December. Members of both groups intend to support the ongoing grassroots hurricane relief efforts coordinated by Common Ground. Common Ground is a community-run organization offering assistance, mutual aid and support to the New Orleans communities that have been historically neglected and under served.

Local resident and educator Peter O'Connell traveled to the region two months ago to work with Common Ground. He is planning to return again with the Oxygen Collective and Southern Oregon Gulf Coast Relief Network. "I will never forget the images of desperate people suffering the initial tragedy of Hurricane Katrina. This tragedy has been compounded by the failures of FEMA and the federal, state and local governments to adequately address the needs of the affected communities. Into this void, Common Ground has stepped in to do the work that needs to be done," said O'Connell.

Close the School of Assassins!

Portland, 20.11.2005 05:12

This weekend, thousands gather at Fort Benning, Georgia -- one of the largest military bases in the world and home of the notorious School of the Americas (SOA/ WHINSEC) -- to confront injustice, to speak out for truth, to change oppressive US foreign policy and to shut down the SOA/WHINSEC and the racist system that it represents.

As the weekend's events to close the School of the Americas (SOA) started and thousands of people converged in Columbus, Georgia, we received sad news from our friends in the Colombian Peace Community of San Jose de Apartado. On Thursday, November 17, 2005, troops commanded by General Luis Alfonso Zapata Uribe attacked and killed Arlen Salas David, a leader of the peace community. His two small children will continue to walk besides us, building a different tomorrow in which there will be respect for life. Arlen, our tears accompany this horror but you are with us, giving us life. Thank you for your leadership, your committment. Someday history will judge those who murdered you."

122 Co-Sponsors to Close the SOA!
As of September 30, we have 122 co-sponsors of HR 1217, the legislation introduced by Rep. McGovern that would close and investigate the SOA/ WHINSEC. We are now in our strongest position to close this school since we won a vote in the House of Representatives in 1999!

SOA Watch is a nonviolent grassroots movement that works through creative protest and resistance, legislative and media work to stand in solidarity with the people of Latin America, to close the SOA/WHINSEC and to change oppressive U.S. foreign policy that institutions like the SOA represent. We are grateful to our sisters and brothers throughout Latin America for their inspiration and the invitation to join them in their struggle for economic and social justice.

Irish Ferries: Time To Break The Law?

Ireland, 20.11.2005 03:37

'Time to plagarise from the French' sez Wag 'Dunno about theorists but workers won't mind' The dispute at Irish Ferries is about greedy bosses, very greedy bosses who want to replace their staff with modern day galley slaves. In 1990 the Industrial Relations Act was passed in this country which brough many of the Thatcherite reforms of trade unions onto our shores. Along with Social Partnership, this has been described by many as a major loss by the trade union movement. The IWU classified it as one of those laws : "designed in democratic bourgeois societies like ours to keep the working class in their place". So when Trade Unionists discuss via political articles how to fight Irish Ferries type attacks on workers, the question of the law must come into it. Of course, we have to remember that other people have been fighting our battles for us already this year. Our unions have the power to shut down Irish Ferries until they agree to employ all of their staff on trade union rates of pay. However, doing this would bring our unions into conflict with the law. The Industrial Relations Act makes solidarity action unlawful. This is a big step to take but the choice is simple: break the law or allow the bosses to break our unions. If we let Irish Ferries get away with it, other bosses will, naturally, copy them. Many more jobs will be in danger. On the other hand, if our unions give Irish Ferries management a bloody nose, other bosses will learn a lesson and back off. The dispute at Irish Ferries is about greedy bosses, very greedy bosses who want to replace their staff with modern day galley slaves. Eamonn Rothwell, Managing Director of Irish Ferries, plans to get rid of 543 workers and replace them with migrants on €3.50 per hour. Rothwell earned €687,000 last year. That’s €338.00 an hour. But there is no talk about replacing him with a yellow pack boss from Eastern Europe! Our so-called ‘social partners’, government and IBEC are not complaining about his wages. Yet again it is ordinary workers who are being screwed to boost the profits of big business. Bertie Ahern pretended to be sympathetic when he said that the company was engaging in “sharp practice”. This is just empty guff designed to stop vote losses. The truth is that Bertie Ahern and his government support what Irish Ferries are doing. His fellow cabinet member Tom Parlon said that new employees of Irish Ferries would be better off than they would be in their own country because they would be getting €3.50 an hour and their board and lodging! This government has encouraged migrant workers to come to Ireland not just because there is a labour shortage but also so that business can underpay and use them to drive down wage levels. We have no argument with fellow workers from abroad, we simply want everyone to get the union rate for the job. SIPTU cannot sort this out with court cases nor with appeals to the government. A strike to shut down Irish Ferries would give Rothwell and his pals something to think about. A commitment by trade unionists in the ports of Ireland, Britain and France to refuse to handle its ships would quickly bring a halt to their gallop.
