Buses for people not profit

United Kingdom, 26.11.2005 01:07

300 people demonstrated in Sheffield on 19th November 2005 against bus fare rises and cuts in services [callout | reports and photos]. Fares on First buses in Sheffield have gone up four times in the last year and since the privatisation of the bus service journeys made iin South Yorkshire have fallen from 350 million a year to 112 million last year and there has been a corresponding increase in car usage, congestion and pollution.

The demonstration was organised by We want our buses back and they are planning a mass lobby of the next Sheffield City Council meeting on Weds 7th December from 12 to 2pm outside the Town Hall.

In addition to the demonstration a group of activists put on a free bus service"Some people believe in asking large corporations for cheaper services so that there is less profit made. Whilst we understand that this is a desirable goal we go one step further to ask for a co-operative way of living, where no profit is produced."

Anti War activist serving 28 days in prison

United Kingdom, 26.11.2005 01:07

Anti war activist Milan Rai of Justice not Vengeance is currently serving 28 days in Lewes Prison, for "wilful refusal to pay" a fine. The fine was imposed after an action in November 2004, when Milan stencilled anti-war messages onto the Foreign and Commonwealth Office buildings in Whitehall, to protest the impending attack on Fallujah. Actions against the invasion of Fallujah took place in several British cities around that time.

The Unoffical Action Taken By Irish Ferries SIPTU Members Deserves Our 100% Support

Ireland, 25.11.2005 20:37

A SIPTU Activist Comments on the myth of social partnership stripped bare The unoffical action and indeed the direct action taken by the SIPTU members on the two Irish Ferries Ships in Wales tonight should be commenended and supported wholeheartedly by the leadership of SIPTU and ICTU.Both leaderships should now publicly support in the strongest possible terms the action taken by the Irish Ferries workers without reserve. Surely now these workers must now be facing criminal proceedings by the managment and the owners of Irish Ferries?. While it is unfortunate and regrettable that the SIPTU members of Irish Ferries have been left with no other alternative but to resort to this desperate but principled and very admirable and brave stand, it must be causing the leadership and bueracracy of SIPTU an unwanted and untold headach of migraine proportions. The direct action that the Irish Ferries workers have taken has shown that the Industrial Relations Act of 1990 should never have been even contemplated nor considered The unoffical action and indeed the direct action taken by the SIPTU members on the two Irish Ferries Ships in Wales last night (November 24th) should be commenended and supported wholeheartedly by the leadership of SIPTU and ICTU. Both leaderships should now publicly support in the strongest possible terms the action taken by the Irish Ferries workers without reserve. Surely these workers must now be facing criminal proceedings by the managment and the owners of Irish Ferries? It is unfortunate and regrettable that the SIPTU members of Irish Ferries have been left with no other alternative but to resort to this desperate but principled and very admirable and brave stand. It must be causing the leadership and bureaucracy of SIPTU an unwanted headache of migraine proportions. The direct action that the Irish Ferries workers have taken has shown that the Industrial Relations Act of 1990 should never have been even contemplated nor considered acceptable by our trade union bureaucracy when it was both discussed and finally introduced as legislation. The Industrial Relations Act of 1990 prohibits actions of this very nature.Yet the leadership of SIPTU and ICTU have done nothing to have it repealed. IBEC and the Government have made their positions very clear right from the outset of this dispute. IBEC by their attack on the trade union movement in the early stages of this dispute and their sudden descent into total silence mean that we can take it that it is IBEC that are leading the "Shock and Awe" tactics of Irish Ferries. Were we ever in doubt as to who really was setting the agenda? This government say they can do no more in this dispute. What did they do in the first place? Act as neutral observers? Let us remind ourselves how neutral this goverment is when employers exploit workers. When the most widespread abuse of workers ever uncovered in this country was revealed on the construction sites of GAMA - what was the punishment that company recieved? A massive multi-million euro contract for the construction of one of the biggest road building jobs this state has ever undertaken. IBEC and the government have made their class allegiances very clear throughout this dispute. They are our class enemies. This dispute has stripped bare the myth of social partnership. What a headache this all must be for our trade union leaders. 100% support must be given to the Irish Ferries workers. Our futures depend on it. Thanksgiving Camp Casey anti-war protest in Crawford, Texas

San Francisco Bay Area, 25.11.2005 17:07

11/24/2005: Upon his return from China, Bush has again been met outside his ranch near Crawford, Texas by people from across the state and country who are demanding an immediate end the US occupation of Iraq.

Renewing the Camp Casey protest vigil in central Texas this week, a dozen anti-war activists challenged the county’s recent laws against camping or parking on the side of any public road, and were arrested. Those arrested included Daniel Ellsberg, former diplomat Ann Wright, and DeDe Miller, Cindy Sheehan’s sister. They are charged with trespassing and obstructing the road. They were sitting in the ditch along a county road, and no obstruction occurred. Each of these Orwellian criminal misdemeanors carries a possible 180 days in jail, and a $2,000 fine.

Critical Mass Documentary Touring Maine

Still We Ride is an action-packed cinematic glimpse into the shocking showdown between Critical Mass bicycle riders and police in New York City. This past summers crackdown in New York City during the Republican National Convention was the beginning of an ongoing effort to suppress free assembly for group bicycle rides. The monthly cycle of arrests and bicycle seizures has forced the cycling community into a legal battle with the city and politicized the very act of riding a bicycle.

Buy Nothing Day on the Day After Thanksgiving

San Francisco Bay Area, 25.11.2005 07:37

The Buy Nothing Day movement continues this year, with groups all over the country planning to not go shopping on the day after Thanksgiving. To counter the rabid consumer culture that has engulfed society, activists use this day every year to encourage people to curb their consumption for at least one day.

Some people have called for creative protests to take place at Wal-Mart stores, but many other forms of protests will take place, as well. In Emeryville, the Shellmound Peace Walk will end at 7:00am at the Bay Street Mall. In the North Bay, the People's Revolutionary Organization will be hosting a full day of direct action, at a variety of shopping centers, starting 9am at Kohl's in Petaluma. In San Jose, Buy Nothing Day Bike Party will gather at 5:30pm.

A Fur-Free Friday march and leafletting event will start at 11:30am in the center of Union Square in San Francisco. Berkeley Women in Black will switch sides of the Bay, to appear in Union Square at 12pm. Riot Folk will be part of a free show that will include folk music, a poetry slam, dance performances, and more. People are encouraged to bring art, paint pictures, sing, dance, play, act, and to otherwise participate in the event. People will gather at 12pm at Powell and Market.
There will be a Buy Nothing Day event at Artists' Television Access at 8:00pm, with video screenings, art installations, and music.

Widerstand gegen das europäische Lager- und Grenzregime

Austria, 24.11.2005 21:07

Resisting Water Privatisation in Bolivia and Ireland

Ireland, 24.11.2005 17:07

Bolivian Water Activist To Address Public Meetings in Derry And Dublin Public Meeting about community struggles in El Alto and Cochabamba, Bolivia against the private control of water services. Bolivian water activist Julian Perez (El Fejuve, El Alto) and Joe Higgins TD (Socialist Party) speak about the resistance to water privatisation locally and globally. In January 2005 Bolivia’s second water war was launched in the city of El Alto. Armed with sticks, traditional indigenous Aymara flags and the words - ‘Fuera Aguas del Illimani! Aguas del Illimani must go!’ - the people of El Alto challenged Bolivia’s President and the World Bank to expel Suez - one of the world’s largest water corporations - and return water to public control. In a city of 800,000 poor indigenous rural migrants -the privatisation of water left 200,000 people without access to a water service and imposed a $500 connection fee on people living on less than $1 a day. Inspired by the success of Bolivia’s first water war in Cochabamba (2000) - which saw the termination of a 30-year private water contract with US engineering giant, Bechtel Corporation - the people of El Alto were determined to fight for their right to water. After an initial victory, the government rolled back on its’ promise of a publicly controlled company when Suez threatened to bring a multi-million dollar lawsuit against the Bolivian state. Over the last year, El Alto’s community interest group, el Fejuve has struggled to negotiate a fair and just water service for the people of El Alto. As a representative of El Fejuve, Julian Perez will speak in Dublin and Derry on the 25th and 26th November respectively about the citizen led campaign to reverse the privatisation of water service as demanded by World Bank lending conditions. In both venues he will be joined by local campaigners involved in resisting water privatisation on the Island of Ireland.COMPLETE EVENT NOTICE AS SUBMITTED TO INDYMEDIA IRELAND Public Meeting about community struggles in El Alto and Cochabamba, Bolivia against the private control of water services. Organised by Muireann de Barra & Aisling Crudden (Gaffer Productions) in partnership with the Latin America Solidarity Centre In January 2005 Bolivia’s second water war was launched in the city of El Alto. As a representative of El Fejuve, Julian Perez will speak in Dublin and Derry about the citizen led campaign to reverse the privatisation of water service as demanded by World Bank lending conditions. As Bolivians prepare to elect a new President next month, the nationalisation of natural resources such as water is seen as a key factor in determining future social, economic and political stability for the majority indigenous population and broad based social movements. Since the beginning of the new millennium, water privatisation has been criticised and abandoned in a number of cities in the developing world and has spawned a global water justice movement seeking to have water recognised as a human right and a public good. As one of the largest companies in the $200 billion global water industry, Suez has faced opposition to its’ operations in South Africa, the Philippines and Uruguay and has had its’ water contracts cancelled in France, the United States, Argentina and Bolivia. Joe Higgins T.D. will reflect on the importance to resist the privatisation of water services both locally and globally and will draw on the experience of the 1996 Dublin based campaign against water charges. Water must be seen as a precious resource and we must ensure that it is kept in public hands. dignas y libres de violencia machista

The Community that the Bar Built

Portland, 24.11.2005 11:39

The very first time I walked into a gay bar, I felt something that I had previously lacked in any public setting: security and community. The flashing of rainbow lights and the thumping of entrancing bass created an inviting atmosphere that was only enhanced by the flamboyant patrons and employees. At last I knew that I was someplace where I wasn't going to get my ass kicked if I let my wrist fall a little limp.

The Final Day of Testimony in Shaheeda Pierce's Breech Homebirth Trial

Portland, 24.11.2005 11:39

The final day of testimony in Shaheeda Pierce's trial took place on Thursday 3rd November. The day seemed to go very well for Shaheeda's case. There were several inspiring moments during the day's proceedings, including one particularly poignant instance during the testimony of "Upel" Hsieh Yu Chin, the client whose breech birth Shaheeda attended. As Upel was speaking, her daughter, the breech baby who is now a healthy, vibrant 2½ year old, ran up to her and wanted to nurse. Upel said, "My daughter needs to feed now." The judge responded, "Oh! I am up with that breastfeeding stuff!" and proceeded to share with the court that his daughter was now happily nursing his grandchild. Then he ADJOURNED THE COURT! He offered Upel a separate room where she could nurse her daughter peacefully, asking if she thought 10 minutes would be enough, or if she felt she would need more time!
