Richmond, 14.12.2005 03:08

"We're back- to take it back!" This was the call of the fifteen hundred Katrina survivors and their supporters who marched on New Orleans City Hall this past Saturday in a March for Human Rights and Right to Return.

Prisoner rights talk at Info Shop

Richmond, 14.12.2005 03:08

On the evening of December 10th, 2005 a forum was held at Paper Street Info Shop in Richmond to discuss the condition of the prison system in the United States. A racially diverse crowd of about 30 people were in attendance. Earlier in the day a group of protestors gathered outside the Richmond City Jail to bring attention to abhorrent and unsafe conditions that the inmates are forced to endure. Both of these events were part of International Human Rights Day. Several activists, some local some not, discussed the current state of prisons in Virginia and abroad.

Target WTO - Derail, Dismantle, Destroy!

Aotearoa, 14.12.2005 00:38

Demonstrations against the 6th World Trade Organisation (WTO) Ministerial kicked off on Sunday in Hong Kong with a march with over 4,000 workers, farmers, migrant workers chanting "kong yee sai mau" (No to WTO!). On Tuesday another demonstration, which included 1,500 South Korean farmers, took place. "We will continue to struggle because we want to survive. The WTO is trying to kill us," a speaker from Via Campesina, an international movement of peasants, announced to the crowd. 200 Korean farmers also jumped into the cold water of Hong Kong harbour to reach the Convention Centre where the Ministerial Conference is deciding their future. [ Photos 1 | 2 | 3 ]

Korean protesters charged the police line that blocked the road to the convention center on the demonstration on Tuesday. They dismantled the funeral pyre prop they had been carrying throughout the march, lit the two-by-fours on fire and ran for the police line. Other protesters joined in, launching empty water bottles and other small objects at the police, who responded by spraying the crowd with a thick, orange, foaming substance that triggered reactions similar to those caused by pepper spray.

The capitalist media in New Zealand reports that Trade Negotiation minister "Jim Sutton is in the power centre that is running the negotiations." He was invited "to take part in the confidential inner-circle World Trade Organisation discussions" which blatantly shows the current government's commitment to neo-liberal policies. A anti-WTO concert was really successful in Wellington with Food not Bombs serving free food.

Vigil Tonight to Express Outrage at Verdict in Cardenas Killing

San Francisco Bay Area, 14.12.2005 00:08

On December 13th, a San Jose jury reached a "not guilty" verdict in the voluntary manslaughter trial of state drug agent Michael Walker. If he had been convicted, Walker would have faced a maximum of 11 years in prison for fatally shooting Rodolfo 'Rudy' Cardenas on Feb 17th, 2004. The Cardenas family has filed a wrongful death suit which is still pending. Family members and supporters will gather tonight in San Jose, to voice their outrage at the verdict, honor Rudy, and remember all those who've been wrongfully killed by police. The vigil will start at 6:30pm at the courthouse at 190 Hedding Street and then proceed to the scene of the killing, at Fourth St. & St. James Place, the scene where Rudy was killed.

Take action against cruel anti-immigrant bill that threatens millions: Vote may occur any day

San Diego, 14.12.2005 00:08

From United Farm Workers

The U.S. House of Representatives votes this week on a Republican-backed bill that would make it a felony to be an undocumented worker and gut the due process rights of legal immigrants and U.S. citizens.
On Thursday, Dec. 8, 2005, the House Judiciary Committee passed along strict party lines the measure by Committee Chairman James Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.). This GOP-sponsored bill, H.R. 4437, would among other things make the crime of being here illegally an "aggravated felony," meaning the entire undocumented population, including 1.6 million children, would be permanently barred from the U.S.

Bury the Powerlines not the People

Ireland, 14.12.2005 00:07

An interview with a campaigner against a pylon project in Roscommon and Sligo, plus a timeline of the campaign and lots of photos. In September I travelled to Boyle, Roscommon, to visit a community group which is opposing a 35 mile, 220 kv, 110 feet, ESB pylon line, in favour of an alternative which would put the powerlines underground. Hence the campaign slogan ‘Bury the Powerlines not the People’. Early in June I had heard of what was going on there, due to reports in the Western papers about threatened high court injunctions. On the 21st of June the ESB arrived at the Roddy household. As Martina Roddy relates: “Well let’s see this was our fifth letter from the ESB, and three of them, including the one of the 14th of June, threatened us with the High Court if we didn’t grant access on the 21st of June, so basically through our solicitor we were informed that there was ESB personnel coming to our house to seek access. So the people of the group and friends and neighbours gathered at the house, and the ESB came to the door, asked for Michael, and were refused access. As I say we were threatened with a high court injunction on that day, and we refused them access and we will continue to refuse.” The group cites the work of Professor Henshaw of Bristol University, who has spoken of a link between childhood leukaemia, brain tumours, miscarriages and overhead power lines. They point out the intense difference between a heavily insulated underground powerline and the open nature of pylons. A number of local protests at the ESB were organised over the summer, in Carrick on Shannon and Sligo, these gained a lot of publicity and spurred on more people to get involved. A national demonstration took place at the ESB HQ on July 25th , involving groups from around the country which have problems with ESB developments. The group in Boyle is well networked with other similar groups across the island, including ones in Cork, Dublin, Donegal and Galway. The following article consists of two parts; an interview with Frank, community activist and organic farmer, and parts of a timeline presentation made by Martina Roddy for the 10th Grassroots Gathering. Related Link: Donegal Alternatives to Pylons So how did the campaign get started? The whole thing started about five years ago, the first we heard was when we saw a big ad in the back of the local paper, the Roscommon Herald, saying that the ESB intended to bring a powerline from Carrick-on-Shannon to a place down in Sligo called Shrananagh and the landowners that were directly affected were written to, but everybody else was ignored. People that would be living in close proximity to the line were never notified of anything apart from this big ad in the paper. Directly affected they call it if it is to go on your land, but to me everybody is directly affected. If you weren’t to have a pylon on your land to the ESB you more or less didn’t exist. A group was set up, a committee was formed, you had several groups along the line, you see it’s a 35 mile line, and therefore you wouldn’t know people from one end of it, and so different groups formed along the line. Myself and the Roddys and a few other neighbours formed a group here in the Boyle area. All the groups then joined up together, and sent in objections, and looked for more information really, and this information was slow in coming. A lot of our questions were never answered. How many objections were made in the Planning Process? I’d say on the whole line maybe 10 to 12,000. They were basically all ignored. We asked a serious amount of questions to the County Manager, to the ESB. We asked what were the alternative routes. Those letters, were, to this day, never answered. What are your health concerns with this development? Most people are really worried about the health implications. More and more research has shown that living close to powerlines, or under them, or near them, is bad for your health to put it mildly. Research has shown a link between, for example, childhood leukaemia and over head powerlines. We are not trying to stop the line as such we are simply trying to get the ESB to put it in as an underground cable. How big, how high and how wide are these pylons and this pylon line to be? The entire line will have about 200 pylons, they will range in height from 100 to 130 feet. They are fairly big structures. They are a new type of design called lattice towers. I believe they are the first of their type in the country. How does that compare to other pylons? They will be one of the biggest groups of pylons in the country. They call this a ‘sterile corridor’, what does that mean in practise? There is a strip of land, 30 metres each side of the line, which comes to about 200 feet in width in total, and that’s the entire line. It is called a ‘sterile corridor’ as if you sign the ‘deed of easement’ you are actually signing away your rights to that property to the ESB, that strip of ground they will have control of, for ever. And once they have the pylons up they can add whatever they like to the line, extra lines, phone masts, and so on. Adrian Leddy, the IFA (Irish Farmers Association) Regional Development Officer, commented on your campaign to the effect that “we don’t live in the Dark Ages”, the IFA also sent out letters claiming they had negotiated a “satisfactory outcome” to this dispute. From day one every time we had a meeting, the IFA would have one contradicting what we had said. The IFA claim to represent farmers well if they do why didn’t they come to us on day one and say well what do you think of this. We don’t trust the IFA, the IFA as far as we are concerned are in bed with the ESB. There is nothing dark ages about an underground cable, that is real progress, there are underground cables in every town and village in the country. This is the sort of stuff we have had to put up with for five years they have bullied and threatened people unbelievably. A guy who is an engineer for the ESB, his name is Jarlath Doyle, he went to a neighbour of mine, a man who is not well at all, who is recovering from leukaemia, and Doyle said to him you still have your signs up and your gate locked, if you don’t take down those signs and open those gates and let the ESB in, we’ll take ya to the High Court and clean ya. TIMELINE: Proposed Project: 220kv ESB Power line going from Carrick on Shannon (Co Leitrim) to Sooey in Co Sligo on 215 pylon towers with an average height of 110ft. This project was started by ESB approx. 15 yrs ago when they made various attempts to go through other areas but much local opposition caused them to re-route the line in our direction in 1999-2000, where there is much afforestation and many elderly or single people living. Route is 35 miles long and will affect 15,000 acres of land in total. The ESB are attempting to gain access to lands using 1927 Electricity Act (amended in 1985) which gave ESB rights to enter any lands for the construction of any necessary structure. They have also enlisted the help of the Irish Farmers Association to negotiate with landowners and get them to agree to allow pylon bases to be constructed on their lands. The ESB need a landowner’s signature of a ‘Deed of Easement’ to ensure a type of ownership of the land beneath the pylon bases and the overhead powerlines. They are also seeking to take over a 60 metre wide ‘sterile corridor’. Timetable of events to date: May 2000: landowners first informed of proposal and given maps of route of lines. No consultation with landowners or locals before maps drawn up. Sept 2000: meeting between ESB officials and our local group, our feelings about plan clearly spelt out. Oct 2001: Planning permission granted by the 3 Co Cos Roscommon, Sligo and Leitrim. We appealed to An Bord Plenala and requested/paid for Oral Hearing which was refused and money never refunded. Oct 2002: An Bord Plenala upheld Co Councils permission and ignored advise of Mr. Wall their inspector who deemed the EIS to be 70% inaccurate and advised permission should be refused. June 2003: Complaint and Petition sent to Europe based on inadequate Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and the ESBs failure to comply with many EU Directives like consultation with the locals involved. Nothing positive heard back, EU pointed out that EIS was done and the fact it was 70% inadequate appeared irrelevant. Matter still ongoing. Nov 2003: first wayleaves issued to landowners who were notified of ESBs ‘intention to start work immediately but no later than Jan 04’. March / April 2004: work began in Coillte lands and on farmers lands where permission to enter lands was given. IFA and ESBs reps began visiting landowners to gain either verbal/written consent to access lands. Many older farmers/single people particularly in Sligo section were talked around and gave in. IFA worked out ‘great deal’ for all landowners €11,250 per pylon and €11.50 per metre of line crossing over lands. Oct 2004: we first received notification of thir intention to enter our lands, workers never showed up on date named by ESB after our solicitor pointed out strongly our opposition to plan. Between Oct 2004 – June 2005 we received 5 letters from ESBs lawyer stating their intention to ‘enter our lands as a matter of urgency’ and 3 letters contained High Court Injunction threats which would take place ‘without further notice’ if we made any attempt to stop ESB personnel entering our private lands. 2nd Feb/1st June and 21st June 2005: We were visited by 2 ESB reps. On 21st June we refused access outright and a crowd of 50 –60 gathered outside our home to support our opposition to pylons. 2 ESB reps called to our door on June 21st, 2 ESB jeeps with approx. 8 workers parked about 70m down the rd and a digger was parked about a 1/2 mile away from house. 2 Gardai also waited outside our front gate at invitation of ESB. July 4th : anti- pylon protest outside ESB premises in Sligo town about 50 attended. Much radio and newspaper coverage. July 25th 2005 : National protest with approx. 150 people outside ESB HQ on Lower Fitzwilliam Street in Dublin. INN and Irish Times coverage as well as local stations and newspapers. August 22nd 2005: Local protest outside ESB premises in Carrick on Shannon again much interest by local media. http://www.indymedia.ie/attachments/dec2005/esbmapsign.jpg http://www.indymedia.ie/attachments/dec2005/esbmichealandfrankpointingtopylonsite.jpg http://www.indymedia.ie/attachments/dec2005/esbchainingthegate.jpg http://www.indymedia.ie/attachments/dec2005/esbsigntwo.jpg http://www.indymedia.ie/attachments/dec2005/esbsignthree.jpg

BODY which is a diverse group of young pro-choice activists that are campaigning for safe and legal abortion services in Ireland lauched today. BODY stands for bold open decisive youth. The launch involved pro-choice women setting up a cage made of coat hangers from within which they leafletted passers-by. Click below for an interview by Tobie: Q: Can you tell us what you are here doing today. BODY: We are here representing BODY, a group of young people have got to getting to try and push for a pro-choice referendum in Ireland. We think that its completely unacceptable that women have to travel to Britain and far beyond to access full reproductive health rights. Q: What is the cage you are standing in right now? BODY: We have made it entirely out of wire hangers representing the way women are caged in Ireland with the lack of information, financial constraints and secrecy surrounding abortion in the country. The wire hangers were chosen to represent the rise and return of illegal abortions that have started to crop up again among communities that are not able to access abortion services abroad. Q: What is significant about the number seventeen? BODY: Every day at least 17 women leave Ireland to access abortion services abroad, mainly in Britain but her have heard stories of women going further afield; in Amsterdam, Russia and the united states to access abortion. The 17 women that we know of are attending British clinics alone and doesn't include the women that are going further abroad. Q: What are the demands that BODY are putting forth? BODY: We believe the time is right now for a pro-choice referendum. We believe that young people are ready now and vocal enough to push for this agenda. We think that enough there are enough groups among student, activist and pro-choice groups that are all ready and all willing to massive full abortion services and sexual reproductive health services in Ireland. http://www.indymedia.ie/attachments/dec2005/women_in_coat_hangers.jpg http://www.indymedia.ie/attachments/dec2005/full_shot.jpg http://www.indymedia.ie/attachments/dec2005/kitty.jpg

WTO Protest Action Hong Kong

Ireland, 13.12.2005 20:38

13th December kicks off the WTO meeting with 'People's Action Week' An estimated 5000-10,000 (still preliminary) protestors gathered in Hong Kong's Victoria Park and marched their way to the Exhibition Centre where the WTO 6th Ministerial Conference has just begun. Protestors from all over south-east Asia expressed their solidarity with cultural gatherings and workshops. But the most hyped group are the South Korean farmers who made headline news when Lee Kyeong-hae commited suicide at Cancun 2003. An estimated 5000-10,000 (still preliminary) protestors gathered in Hong Kong's Victoria Park and marched their way to the Exhibition Centre where the WTO 6th Ministerial Conference has just begun. Protestors from all over south-east Asia expressed their solidarity with cultural gatherings and workshops. But the most hyped group are the South Korean farmers who made headline news when Lee Kyeong-hae commited suicide at Cancun 2003. Only a short hour's march from Victoria Park to the assembly area near the Exhibition Centre, the loud but peaceful rally went through one of Hong Kong's busiest cosmomopolitan areas -- Causeway Bay and Wan Chai. With 9,000 police on duty, a third of Hong Kong's force, navy riot helmets and shields were as common as the ordinary spectator. An interesting point is that very few Hong Kongers took to the streets and many citizens were both simply annoyed and bemused at the event. Most can thank the mainstream media's pre-coverage, which was reminiscent of each year's MayDay in Dublin: news bulletins predicting doom and chaos. But, then again, since the protests are mainly about agriculture and manufacturing, these two industries are practically non-existent in Hong Kong (mainly services based), so that is why the WTO chose HK perhaps? One highlight was when 50 Korean farmers (they sure know how to make a scene) jumped into Wan Chai harbour and tried to swim towards the blockaded Exhibition Centre. Most were predictably picked up by the naval guards. Towards the end of today's rally there were short outbursts of violence, again mainly by Korean farmers. Pepper sprays were today's special on the menu. The People's Action Week continues till the 18th with many events and rallies along the way. Stanley Tookie Williams, Killed by the State of California

San Diego, 13.12.2005 18:38

Stanley Tookie Williams III was executed early this morning by lethal injection administered by the state of California. Williams, who was weeks from his 52nd birthday, is said to have been a co-founder of the Crips gang in Los Angeles. In 1981, he was convicted of the 1979 murders of four people in the Los Angeles area. After 6.5 years in solitary confinement on Death Row at San Quentin, he renounced his past gang affiliation. He wrote several books and started programs to discourage youth from joining gangs. A film starring Jamie Foxx entitled "Redemption: The Stan Tookie Williams Story," was made to tell his story. Williams never admitted to having committed the murders for which he was convicted. This was one reason that Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger cited for denying him clemency. Supporters of Williams tried to submit issues to various legal bodies in hopes of being granted a stay of execution. If a 60-day stay had been granted, it would have given time for courts to examine the legal issues that are outstanding in the case. It would have also given California's legislative bodies a chance to vote on AB 1121, the California Moratorium on Executions Act. Read more

Tookie interferes with CIA crack cocaine distribution

Portland, 13.12.2005 11:38

Despite the years of Tookie's efforts and success at preventing youth (150,00+) from joining steet gangs, Nazi Actor Arnold in Sacramento seems determined to end the life of this former gangster turned peacemaker. Maybe the CIA needs young African-americans to work for them and continue distributing crack-cocaine and automatic weapons in urban neighborhoods.

Stanley Tookie Willaims directly interfered with the CIA crack-cocaine importers when he wrote books and lectured to youth to avoid joining gangs. However many (150,000) young people Tookie has reached and have as a result changed their minds about joining street gangs are not going to be working (indirectly) for the CIA in distributing crack cocaine in working class neighborhoods in LA and elsewhere.. read more >>

California to execute Williams tonight!!

California will execute Stan Tookie Williams at midnight tonight. The Governor of our neighbor state to the south, the very man who ordered the word Rehabilitation added to the Department of Corrections name, denied Williams request for clemency this afternoon. Contra la especulación inmobiliaria: prácticas creativo-rebeldes

estrecho / madiaq, 13.12.2005 10:07

Stanley Tookie Williams, Killed by the State of California

San Francisco Bay Area, 13.12.2005 09:38

Read more

NO-TAV-Proteste in Italien: Zehntausende erobern Tal zurück

Germany, 13.12.2005 03:38

Desecration of Iwi sites

Aotearoa, 13.12.2005 00:08

Desecration of Iwi sites in Wellington angers local tribes. Archaeological evidence of local Iwi dwellings in the heart of the wellington CBD about to be destroyed by insensitive pakeha developers. kia Ora koutou On the corner of Taranaki and Manners street In Wellington, a large ancient Pa with three or more ancient dwellings dating probably to the 6Th and 7Th century or even later, were unearthed recently by developers on a half acre piece of real estate said local Iwi scientist Karena Puhi. This half acre site would provide for local Iwi a clear picture of the lives Iwi lived in the environs of the Te Whanga Nui A Tara area, one of its original names in pre-pakeha days. The developers are today or very soon going to cover this site with a high rise apartment block, which would destroy any hope of Iwi carrying out an extensive archaeological examination of the site for the next 100 to 200 years. We could find out who was there, what the area was used for, by whom, when and for how long also who was there before the Kupe. If you are of either Rangitane, Muaupoko, Ngati Ira, Kahungunu, Ngati Porau, Ngati Kuia, Te Ati Awa, Ngati Tama, Maru A Iwi, Te Tini a Toi, Ngai Tahu, Kati Mamoe, Kaikoura, Hokonui, Maniapoto, Taranaki, Takahanga Runanga, etc., then the chances of your great great grand parents maybe having had lived there or having had visited whanau who lived there are very real. Who wouldn't want to know that information, I would that's for sure. The chances of Iwi losing access to this very rich source of early Iwi culture and technology is for Iwi archaeologists tantamount to cultural genocide. The developers, the Mayor and all the supporters of the project are showing a total disregard for all the tangata whenua of this country by only holding consultation hui with pre-selected friendly Iwi thence disregarding the rights of the collective Iwi.
