NYS Legislature Sets Record for Latest Budget

Hudson Mohawk, 10.08.2004 21:12

The State legislature finally began passing budget bills today, having already set the record for the latest budget. The state fiscal year began April 1. Last week the legislature missed the court deadline to come up with a new funding formula for poorer school districts. The budget rejects most of Pataki's proposed cuts in welfare and Medicaid, though co-pays and an assest test for Family Health Plus were instituted. Major cuts in Title XX for local social service programs were enacted. Gov. Pataki's $90 a month cut in benefits for poor PA households receiving disability benefits was not rescinded. Funding for higher education, including the TAP program, was restored. Details about revenue options have not yet been disclosed. However, the Governor was not part of the budget agreement and could decide to do line-item vetos; several years ago when he was excluded, he vetoed more than 1,000 items.

Pissed Off Garment District: Near Riot Outside RNC Info Session

NYC, 10.08.2004 20:08

10 minutes of getting claustrophpobic, and then word was sent up the from the dungeon below: the room is full. Come back tommorow. Entrance denied. Reschedule your life. There was an angry mob on the steps outside Parsons, with some poor spokesperson who was clearly out of his league. Typical exchange: Why not post this info on the website? Info is on the website. There is no concrete info on the website. Yes, but you can go there. Great. We are going to extraordinary lengths to protect these Republicans and I'm so sure they are very appreciate of our sacrifices. || July 21 Indypendent: Chelsea Is Not Bush Country

Protest Organizers Listen to Grassroot Activists, Renew Request for Central Park for RNC Demo

Hudson Mohawk, 10.08.2004 19:31

United for Peace and Justice, the organizers of the large protest rally planned for the Republican National convention on Sunday, Aug. 29th, are now rejecting the settlement reached with the City Police Department for West Side Highway and are asking again for Central Park. UPFJ leaders faced a stormy revolt at their last meeting from grassroots activists, many of whom announced they would go to Central Park even without a permit. Buses are being organized from the Capital District. A Green World is Possible Festival will be in Washington Square Park on Saturday, Aug. 28. On Aug. 31 / Sept. 1, there is a conference on universal health care with Amy Goodman, Tim Robbins, Michael Moore, and more.

NYC, 10.08.2004 19:06

Our August 12 issue will have a 200,000 print run and our our August 25 issue 100,000. This is believed to be the largest print run in decades by any radical grassroots newspaper in the U.S. Help us pull it off. We'll be distributing throughout the city over the next several weeks. If you would like to get involved, please contact us at indy_distro@yahoo.com or call 212-684-8112. || Issue #53: "The First Amendment Is the Only Permit We Need" || Issue #52: "Defend New York from the Republican National Convention" || "The Indy Hits 50"

UFPJ Says No to the West Side Highway

NYC, 10.08.2004 18:57

[from the open newswire] WE ARE MARCHING! On August 29, United for Peace and Justice will hold a massive, impassioned, peaceful, and legal march past Madison Square Garden, the site of the Republican Convention, to protest the Bush Administration’s deceit and destruction. But we will NOT be rallying afterwards on the West Side Highway. As we announced in a press conference today, exiling us to a remote stretch of sun-baked highway makes a mockery of our right to assembly: The deal is off.

Controversy Over 'Africa Meets Africa' Show on WPFW

DC, 10.08.2004 02:34

WPFW Censors Pan-Africanism

Addressing WPFW 89.3 FM Station Manager Ron Pinchback’s Canceling The Broadcast of "Africa Meets Africa" Because The Guest Hosts Are Not African Enough

John Henrik Clarke used to say that the ideology of pan-Africanism began as an immediate response to first the Islamic then European trade in enslaved Africans. Of today’s world he once wrote that, "Black people are African people regardless of immediate geographic location..."

Full Text From WPFW Station Manager

When Africa Meets Africa was created by me as Program Director, it was specifically developed to be an African public affairs program, produced, and hosted by Africans to address African issues. There are issues regarding the African continent that Africans need to discuss among Africans. This is the only show at this time on WPFW that does so and that is why I have to insist on African participation.

Hate is alive and well in Aotearoa

Aotearoa, 10.08.2004 01:39

This weekend saw the abhorrent desecration of Jewish graves and a Jewish Prayer chapel in Wellington. Many of us are shocked that this sort of hate crime could take place in our own city – supposedly a safe and friendly place to live – and with the holocaust in living memory. It’s sickening, and frightening. My sympathy goes out to members of the Jewish community.

As I flicked through the weekend papers, I was reminded of other victims of the holocaust. Some of you may not know that gay and lesbian people were also persecuted by the Nazi regime, and many thousands died in the concentration camps. Only a few years previously, Berlin had been seen as a “homosexual Eden,” with gay clubs, gay rights organisations and support networks. It was supposedly a safe and friendly place to live. These young people enjoying love and life in the 1920’s could not have foreseen that within their lifetimes they and their friends would be beaten and abused, subjected to crude experiments and operations, tortured, raped, and killed, all because of who they loved.
