Groton Residents Resist Proposed Military Training Facility

New Hampshire, 17.02.2006 18:09

The people of Groton, New Hampshire and the surrounding area haven't yet had the chance to be heard, but we know what many would say. They are opposed to a proposal to build a weapons training facility in their backyard.

In a recent informational meeting at the Groton Town Hall, more than 150 people showed up. The meeting was canceled because the town hall could not possibly accommodate the large number of people. It will be rescheduled for at least a week from now, after they are able to find a larger facility. This comes just four months after the Zoning Board of Appeals in Farmington denied a similar proposal in a meeting which drew 175 people.

The mercenary training facility has been proposed by the North American Training Lodge, whose president is William Gifford of Rye, NH, working with at least one partner, Ed Fasold, a retired Navy Seal. The facility would potentially provide weapons training for law enforcement, private security companies, and US military forces in the use of pistols, rifles, shotguns, and possibly even explosives.

Found to be in content of court in the USA the 26 managers of Fotut 2004

In April 2004 an Illinois Court (USA) passed a sentence against Forum because they haven't paid an assignment made to a North American company. Sentence has became final judgement and implies the pay of €3000 per day until Forum indemnify the company. The City Council has replied pressing charges of extortion against the company, but this report has been filed. This is another ridiculous (and expensive) chapter of the post-Forum, which values (multiculturality, peace, dialogue) seem now that they've transmuted in prosecution and the fines of civility by-laws, already in application, beginning with sexual workers.

Demonstrations Grow Against Anti-Immigrant Legislation

San Diego, 17.02.2006 18:08

Alarm and opposition is growing nationwide to HR 4437, the Border Protection, Antiterrorism, and Illegal Immigration Control Act of 2005. The proposed legislation, which passed in the house in December, would declare all undocumented workers "aggravated felons." [In-Depth Coverage on Indybay]

On Saturday, the Coalition of Latino Pastors of Northeast Ohio organized a protest at the new office of House Rep. Ted Strickland, one of 16 democrats who voted in favor of the bill. On Tuesday, hundreds gathered in Philadelphia for a day-long strike organized by El Paro. Strikers called on employers to wake up to the potentially devastating effects of the bill. Frankreich: Wiederstand gegen CPE geht weiter

Germany, 17.02.2006 15:39

Report from the Common Ground Speaking Event

Portland, 17.02.2006 08:08

Kerul Dyer and Sakura Kone' spoke at Reflections Coffee House (446 NE Killingsworth St.) on Sunday February 12th. Sakura came in place of Common Ground founder, Malik Rahim. Malik deeply wanted to come, but on saturday morning his aunt died and he had to stay to make funeral preparations for her. Sakura came on just a couple hours notice, for which we were deeply thankful.

After a video about Common Ground and the relief effort, Sakura sat down to talk to folks about what was really going down in New Orleans. After a short talk, he and Kerul opened the floor for questions from the packed room.

The overlying theme of this event was to help establish a "Common Ground Portland" ... or something of the sort. Common Ground rose up AFTER the hurricane and in response the the governments dissmisal of poor people. The idea is to start organizing for something catastrophic NOW so that we have a network already set up that even if the government decided to care, we wouldnt need them.

New Report Shows Tennessee in Top 5 in Income Inequality

Tennessee, 16.02.2006 22:09

The United States was built on the ideal that hard work should pay off, that individuals who contribute to the nation’s economic growth should reap the benefits of that growth. Over the past two decades however, the benefits of economic growth has been skewed in favor of the wealthiest members of society according to a new report from the Economic Policy Institute and the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities entitled, “Pulling Apart: A State-by-State Analysis of Income Trends.”

Report on Rossport Solidarity Camp speaking tour of Scotland and England

Scotland, 16.02.2006 14:41

After a very productive publicity tour of England back in November we decided it was time to do some more outreach, this time to Scotland. This has been an important part of our work over the winter months. Its important that we make as many links as possible so we can show that this campaign is not isolated that its part of a worldwide struggle against capitalism, a struggle against the profits of big business always being put before the needs of communities. Also this report will feature my trip to the World Social Forum in Venezuela where I got to give a presentation on the Shell to Sea campaign. Apologies for not reporting on this sooner but things are very busy here. During the g8 we had made some good connections in Scotland especially with other protest camps. So on the 3rd of February 4 of us from the Rossport Solidarity Camp headed off to Scotland in our trusty transit van.

Craig Rosebraugh Subpoenaed to Federal Grand Jury in Eugene, Oregon; ELF Investigation Continues

Portland, 16.02.2006 10:38

PORTLAND, OR - On Tuesday, February 14, 2006, Craig Rosebraugh received a subpoena to testify before a federal grand jury currently convened in Eugene, Oregon investigating a series of actions committed by the Earth Liberation Front. Federal agents approached Rosebraugh as he sat in his vehicle and demanded he roll down his window, presumably to accept the subpoena. He refused, rolled up the windows, locked the doors, and cranked the stereo. After yelling at him, the agents left the subpoena on his windshield.

The grand jury subpoena - the eighth Rosebraugh has received in the last nine years - commands him to appear in Eugene to testify at 9:00am on March 16, 2006.

Investigating ELF actions that occurred between 1996 and 2001, the grand jury convened in Eugene is responsible for indicting eleven people in January 2006 in connection with ELF activity throughout the Pacific Northwest and Colorado.

Rosebraugh served as an unofficial spokesperson for the ELF from 1997 through 2001. Receiving anonymous communiqués from the underground activists, he released the information to the news media and conducted interviews internationally in support of the group. In 2000, Rosebraugh co-formed the North American Earth Liberation Front Press Office (NAELFPO), a media resource organization based in Portland, Oregon. In February 2002, Rosebraugh was subpoenaed and appeared in front of the US Congress in a subcommittee hearing on "ecoterrorism." He pled the Fifth Amendment at the proceeding to 54 out of 56 questions, effectively stonewalling the hearing.

Schumacher Furs Protest Report (Bloody Valentine Reloaded), February 11

Portland, 16.02.2006 06:08

The real price of fur must be measured in death not dollars... The love could not be felt at Schumacher Furs last Saturday. The Valentine's Day sale appeared to be a gigantic flop as customers not fooled by those cute red hearts and colorful balloons in the windows chose to spend their money on less cruel gifts for their loved ones. Something tortured and dead just doesn't seem to say "I love you" to most people.

Every year a well-organized fur trade spends millions to glamorize the fur coat and to mask the real price of fur- pain, mutilation, and violent death for approximately 40 million animals per year. See http://www.furisdead.com for info and videos about what happens to animals in the fur trade.

There were two arrests at the demo this Saturday for the heinous crimes of spitting on the sidewalk and allegedly using sidewalk chalk too close to a department store (Nordstroms private property). These are terrorist tactics obviously gleaned from al-Qaeda. These crimes resulted in handcuffs and police car rides down to headquarters. As the protest grows larger with more and more new people turning out to express their outrage at the unregulated cruelty of the fur industry, there needs to be education as to legal rights and laws regarding protesting and freedom of speech. In Defense of Animals will be holding an informational meeting open to everyone on Sunday, February 26th at Free Geek (1731 SE 10th Ave)from 4:30 to 6:30 pm. The topics will include Legal Observing, Jail Support, and Knowing Your Rights as an Activist. Presenters will include Dan from Copwatch, an unnamed attorney, and Patrick from Lewis and Clark law school. [ Read More ]

Gold Mine on the Harpeth

Tennessee, 16.02.2006 05:11

Last month I was writing about the abandoned quarry that the Metro Solid Waste Advisory Board has approved as a new dump site. I got a chance to visit it a couple of weeks ago, and I want to share my findings and observations with you. It's huge. It's desolate, it's beautiful, it's dangerous, it's right on the Harpeth River, it has great acoustics and a beautiful lake and, yes, water is flowing into it from seams in the rock and, since it isn't getting any fuller, there must be water flowing out of it, too. The geology of the area is what is called “karst;” the rocks are shot through with wide cracks, through which water seeps or flows, sometimes creating caves. It would be easy for contamination from a dump here to enter the water table, and there will be no getting pollution out of the groundwater once it's there. These things happen—just ask the people of Dixon about it.

Solid Energy HQ Scaled and Banners Dropped

Aotearoa, 16.02.2006 04:10

Three Save Happy Valley Coalition activists unfurled banners while hanging 15 metres from the concrete facade of Solid Energy headquarters on Wednesday morning. The action was a solidarity protest with those people currently in Happy Valley occupying the proposed mine site since January 28th.

The three activists had secretly scaled the concrete wall during the night, evading regular security checks and an unexpected late night visit from cleaners. The next morning a protest began outside, with security puzzled at the interest by the film crew present with the top of the building. They were soon answered as the first of two banners came rolling over the top of the building. Shortly after, a second banner came down alongside two of the activists. [Press Release]

The rooftop door had been barricaded during the night and so police had difficulty reaching the trio. They eventually destroyed the door with a crowbar and sledgehammer, and brought them down 90 minutes after the protest first began. [Press Release]

Stanford Students Voice Opposition to Experiments

San Francisco Bay Area, 16.02.2006 02:09

Animal Rights on the Farm (ARF) continued its campaign against Stanford University's animal experiments with a demo on Friday, February 10 at the University’s Research Animal Facility (RAF). Stanford students converged on the RAF to voice their opposition to Stanford’s experiments on primates, dogs, mice, and numerous other animals. ARF seeks increased accountability for the experiments and calls on Stanford to begin its shift to more humane alternatives by eliminating what it considers the worst experiments.

Corporate Meida Lies AGAIN to Protect Killer Cops

Portland, 16.02.2006 02:08

Readers of this site know the story by now. The police shot and killed yet another injured, unarmed man. And last month, the killers of Fouad Kaady were "cleared" by a bogus investigation that concluded that, although officers attacked a man they knew to be unarmed, they did nothing wrong because they followed procedures. Throughout this ordeal, the corporate media has done what it could to protect the police state from any accountability. The nightmare continues. Emblazoned across the pages of this morning's Oregonian is yet another reminder that the corporate media's lies are dangerous to us all. I'm speaking of the yellow journalism of "reporter" Andy Parker. (See below for Mr. Parker's contact information. You will likely want to give him a call.)

Ignoring the CCSO's own piss-poor excuse for an "invesitation," Mr. Parker inexplicably asserts that the bran-eating, Bible-reading, hard-working Deputy Willard found himself "staring across his handgun at Kaady, an enraged, bloody man who was threatening to kill him." Clearly, Mr. Parker did not do his homework. If he had, he would have learned in the CCSO's own words, in Willard's own words, that Mr. Kaady had been sitting on the ground "in a catatonic state" ... Bike Riders of the Apocalypse vs 4X4

United Kingdom, 16.02.2006 01:38

Once again it is ordinary people who are taking the initiative tackling the threat of climate change. The first Saturday of the month, a group of cyclists pissed off with the ever increasing amount of dirty, dangerous and downright ridiculous 4x4s which are accelerating climate Armageddon took to their bikes and donned skeleton outfits to shame 4x4 drivers.

On a similar theme Manchester's Critical Mass - a street demonstration of the cycling alternative to car traffic - continues the last Friday of every month. Looking ahead Dosummat are starting to plan for a Manchester neighbourhood at the camp for climate action happening later this year, with the idea of building links in Manchester between people wanting to take action on climate change.
