Council Ignores Public Opinion in Demolition Skam

United Kingdom, 24.02.2006 10:08

"I can assure local councillors and residents that the views of local people are paramount and will be taken into full account before any decision is made." Councillor Newman, Manchester City Council's Executive Member for Housing.

On Feb 15th Manchester City Council proceeded with proposals to demolish the Kingsley Avenue Neighbourhood of Moston, despite public opposition from residents and stakeholders. MCC has decided to proceed with declaring the Kingsley Avenue Neighbourhood a clearance area for demolition. This is despite strong local stakeholder opposition from home owners and residents.

During a public consultation period in October formal representations showed that only 20% of respondees supported the demolition proposals. However, according to Save Kingsley Avenue Neighbourhood this did not give the result the Housing Department wanted who added in what they called ‘informal’ representations.

Environmental activist Rod Coronado arrested for "teaching and demonstrating" at a 2003 San Diego lecture

San Diego, 24.02.2006 07:38

Environmental activist Rod Coronado arrested for "teaching and demonstrating" at a 2003 San Diego lecture Arizona23 Feb 2006

Tucson environmental activist Rod Coronado was arrested Wednesday afternoon at his workplace by agents with the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF). The arrest is in connection with a Grand Jury indictment in San Diego charging Coronado with "teaching and demonstrating" to others how to commit arson at a lecture he gave August 1, 2003 in San Diego . According to the FBI press release, Coronado "taught and demonstrated the making and use of a destructive device, with the intent that the device be used to commit arson" at a public gathering in San Diego's Hillcrest neighborhood. Three animal rights activists in San Diego were jailed for contempt of court in 2005 for refusing to testify in the secret Grand Jury investigation.

Coronado is not charged with setting a fire 15 hours before his lecture that caused $50 million in damages and destroyed a large apartment complex under construction in the University Towne Center area of San Diego. Neighbors observed that ATF agents searched his home in the Dunbar Spring neighborhood for several hours.

Coronado’s arrest is the latest in the string of arrests across the country related to environmental and animal rights related actions.

Bush Administration vs seaport security

Philadelphia, 24.02.2006 02:38

A mere 13 days after the attacks of September 11 in 2001, two committees, one from the Senate and one from the House, agreed to ask the Secretary of Transportation to develop recommendations for strengthening seaport security, the issue was considered that important. Four years later, the Bush Administration has aroused bipartisan fury and astonishment by trying to hand control of US seaport security over to a company wholly owned by the United Arab Emirates. "The Bush administration says it found no security risk in the deal but would not elaborate, saying the details are classified."

The law does not make exceptions for women who seek abortions due to rape, incest, or threats to their health. The bill now goes to anti-choice Governor Mike Rounds, who will have 15 days to make his decision about signing.

No Bill Can Cure Dishonesty

Tennessee, 23.02.2006 23:09

Tennessee had its Tennessee Waltz scandal last year, and Washington D. C. is in the midst of its lobbying scandal. But, not to worry, our state legislators have passed a bill that will forever prevent this kind of corruption from happening in Tennessee politics again. And I am sure that our legislators in D. C. are right on top of this issue. The Comprehensive Governmental Ethics Reform Act of 2006 passed by the Tennessee Legislature and signed by Governor Bredesen mandates a better finance reporting system by lobbyists and public officials.

Can campaigners save Bristol's railways?

Bristol, 23.02.2006 21:38

Bristol threatens suburban rail sell-off Cat Hobbs reports on Friends of Suburban Bristol Railways' attempts to block the councils' sell off of local rail, despite them being presented with a 3,000 signature petition: The Partnership responded last week with a letter describing what they've done for local rail since the 1970's. The campaigners are disappointed because the Partnership's response fails to deal with the specific demands made in the petition. At Friday's meeting they will argue that meeting those demands requires the local authorities to maintain current subsidies. Bristol City Council plan to cut the annual subsidy of £134,000 to the Severn Beach line...First have stated that they could provide a half hourly service if the subsidy were kept. The cuts mean that services will be hourly rather than half hourly. Rail campaigners are asking the councillors concerned to reconsider cutting the subsidies in forthcoming budget meetings. There are also concerns that without these subsidies, First will need to raise the fares on local trains more... Cat notes a victory in the campaign: Councillors voted yesterday to maintain £90,000 rail subsidy needed for Bath-Filton Abbey Wood line. They hope that Bristol City Council will now follow suit and vote against their budget on Tuesday 28th February. The proposed BCC budget includes a cut to the £134,000 subsidy which could provide half-hourly services on the Severn Beach line. Campaigners will be lobbying councillors, both by email before the event and at 1.30pm on Tuesday outside the Council House. Write to your councillor to oppose the cut. Go to http://www.bristol-city.gov.uk/ccm/content/Council-Democracy/Elected-Representatives/councillor-finder.en to find out who your councillor is. | Rail campaigners call on councils to maintain subsidies | South Gloucestershire Council keep rail subsidy! | Friends of Suburban Bristol Railways |< a href="http://www.portisheadrailwaygroup.org/">Portishead Rail Action | attachments/feb2006/s_beach_1.jpg

Rod Coronado arrested for 2003 teach-in in San Diego

Portland, 23.02.2006 19:38

Details are sketchy, but a federal indictment was handed down by a Federal Grand Jury in San Diego charging Rod with "teaching and demonstrating the making of a destructive device" before a crowded room at the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Community Center in Hillcrest on Aug. 1, 2003, one day after an arson at the University Towne Center apartment complex under construction in San Diego.

Rod is already awaiting setencing from previous charges. 2 months back Rod and Matt Crozier were found guilty of felony conspiracy to interfere with or injure a government official (max 7 years), charges related to an Earth First! campaign to prevent mountain lions from being captured or killed by hunters in Tucson, Arizona in March 2004.

Prospective BU Students Informed of Biolab During Campus Tours

Boston, 23.02.2006 18:08

Seven Boston University (BU) campus tours were interrupted today by members of Operation: Over to inform the prospective students about BU’s proposed BioSafety Level 4 (BSL-4) lab in Roxbury. These interruptions were intended to promote the boycott of BU that Operation: Over has called. The boycott is calling for high school students who are considering attending BU to reconsider, on the grounds that their tuition money will go towards funding the proposed BSL-4 lab, which will be built in a densely populated, low-income community of color against its wishes.

decision to make; however, the unacceptable business practices of the

Nantes: Gegen alle Gefängnisse!

Switzerland, 23.02.2006 11:07

1800 People Killed by Corporate Timber and Human Ignorance

Portland, 23.02.2006 03:38

More than a thousand people have died in the Philippines, as a result of a tremendous landslide. As they slipped beneath the mud of the nearby mountainside, did they know who was to blame? As it turns out, logging was to blame. People of Cascadia, take note.

According to scientific analysis and preliminary government reports alike, the reason for the massive landslide that took so many lives last week is clear: It was logging. The steep slopes above the buried village were denuded of all their trees. Ancient forests had been carved away by greed and indifference. The delicate forest ecosystem had melted under the weight of machines and "progress," and so the ancient mountain then melted away onto the little village below.

Schumacher Furs Protest Report (I'd rather go naked than wear fur), February 18

Portland, 23.02.2006 03:38

While about twenty protesters stood out in the cold holding signs and passing out literature in front of Schumacher Furs last Saturday, another half dozen protesters stripped down to g-strings and shoes, some with strategically placed anti-fur stickers, others with anti-fur slogans written on their bare skin with black ink.

Meanwhile a crowd gathered across the street, fascinated by our protest, and more than usual amounts of educational literature were distributed. Why would people take off their clothes downtown in 37 degree weather? To drive home the point that we'd rather wear nothing than wear the product of intense animal abuse and suffering.

A Call for Economic Justice: Interview with City Director of Consumer Affairs Lance Haver

Philadelphia, 23.02.2006 01:40

In this Philly IMC interview Lance Haver questions why we've "created a society where 0.1% control 40% of the wealth of America". He goes on to raise a challenge that we must return our political focus to the "fight over a more equitable distribution of wealth." In this wide ranging video Lance focuses on the nature of democracy in our current consumer culture and how it relates to employment, welfare, wealth, the middle class, Walmart and most importantly, how to build towards alternatives.
