Stand in Solidarity with the Women of South Dakota! Planned Parenthood Action in Eugene

Portland, 09.03.2006 14:38

South Dakota Governor Mike Rounds signed a ban into law this week that criminalizes abortion in the state of South Dakota! This ban is part of a larger strategy by anti-choice extremists to eliminate the right to abortion in the United States.

Oregonians are nothing less than outraged by this severe attack on women's health and safety.

Planned Parenthood will fight the ban in court to protect women but we need you to join us in our efforts.

This Friday, March 10th, Planned Parenthood activists will hold an Hour of Solidarity. We will be gathering at the Federal Courthouse on the corner of 7th and Pearl at 11:45AM for a demonstration to convey the message that: "We Stand With the Women Of South Dakota!" All signs and materials will be provided

Biscuit Flares Up Again: Trials, an Anniversary and New Timber Sales

Portland, 09.03.2006 07:41

Arrestees from last year's civil disobedience actions against the Biscuit logging project are set to begin their trial hearings today, March 7th. This occurs on the one year anniversary of the day logging began within formerly protected old growth reserves in the Siskiyou National Forest. At seventy-two years old, Cave junction resident Joan Norman was the first of dozens to be arrested in what grew into a multiple month, community supported resistance campaign that gained national media attention. Joan would be going to trial today but she was killed in a car accident last July after spending 16 days in the Josephine County jail for her second Biscuit arrest. The remaining 20-some defendants are challenging the Forest Service and the legitimacy of the government's actions that allowed these unprecedented sales to move forward against massive public opposition.

The trials will take place against the contentious backdrop created by a wave of new reports that fundamentally challenge the science and economics behind the Biscuit logging project, as well as the Forest Service's recent announcement that they are planning to release two new, highly controversial timber sales in as little as ten days time. The release of these remote, Inventoried Roadless Area sales is a direct assault on the Clinton-era Roadless Rule, one of the most widely supported pieces of national environmental policy in decades.

Queer Democrats Discuss Military Issue

San Diego, 09.03.2006 05:10

The predomninantly Queer San Diego Democratic Club rated three Democratic challengers to incumbent Congressmember Duncan Hunter — who pushed through the triple border fence and wants to extend it across the entire U.S.-Mexico border — acceptable at their February 23 meeting. They also heard presentations from Tracy Jada O'Brien on Transgender issues and Bridget Wilson of the Servicemembers' Legal Defense Network on the rights of Queers in the military. Wilson said that even those opposed to the Iraq war and U.S. imperialism in general need to get behind the civil-rights issue of the right to serve in the military, especially since for many working-class Americans today military service is virtually the only way they have to go to college and work their way up in the world.

WHY: Latinos represent nearly 15% of the US population and 11% of the US military, with many serving in combat or hazardous duty occupations. In addition, an estimated 20% of the fallen service members in the early months of the invasion were Latino. With the continued growth of the Latino population and its vital importance to the future of this country, it is time the Latino community become an active and vocal part of the 60%+ of US citizens that oppose this War. It is also time to show the Latino community that they have a voice and a right to fight for peace and stability. Fernando Suarez Del Solar is committed to self-sacrifice. At 50 years of age he cares more about ending this war than even his own health. We make this call not only to the Latino population but to all those who agree with our message “No more bloodshed in Iraq”.

AFSCME Workers Take Struggle to UCSC Chancellor's Doorstep

Santa Cruz, CA, 08.03.2006 19:38

On the night of March 7, custodians of AFSCME 3299 and their families, along with student and worker supporters, marched to the gates of UC Santa Cruz Chancellor Denice Denton's on-campus home. The more than 200-strong crowd demanded the Chancellor support workers' struggles for dignity and justice, including wage parity with other regional colleges where workers make dollars more per hour for the same (or less) work.

The march, organized by AFSCME 3299 in coordination with MEChA de UCSC and the Student and Worker Coalition for Justice (SWCJ) continues the legacy of labor struggle at the UC Santa Cruz campus. On April 14 of last year, over 1,000 students and workers shut down the campus for the day as a part of a state-wide AFSCME strike for justice. Days later, the workers won a significantly better contract.

In the past year, student and worker solidarity and militancy has lead to significant gains for AFSCME, CUE (clericals), and Santa Cruz County bus drivers, represented by UTU. The struggle continues... Read more and view photos

Autonomous Region Under Siege by Korean Troops

Portland, 08.03.2006 09:39

For over four years, Daechuri and the nearby community of Doduri have defiantly resisted the siezure of their homes and fields for the expansion of a United States Army base. Barracaded inside the elementary school, rice farmers, elderly residents, and peace activists are holding out against sporadic, sometimes intense attacks by Korea's elite military police force. International support is needed to pressure the Korean government to halt its brutal assault.

Outraged and dissillusioned with the corrupt beaurocracy of an indifferent government, in February, farmers marched to Pyeongtaek city hall and burned their "residency cards", renounced their Korean citizenship and declared Daechuri an autonomous region. Within this rebel territory, a vibrant community has flourished. Artists, musicians, peace activists, and religious leaders have joined with the residents, repairing and occupying vacant houses, and creating a "Peace Village".

Santa Cruz Citizens for Sensible Marijuana Policy Initiative

Santa Cruz, CA, 08.03.2006 07:38

The Santa Cruz Citizens for Sensible Marijuana Policy are seeking volunteer signature gatherers to help place an initiative on November's city ballot that will: (1) Makes investigations, citations, arrests, property seizures, and prosecutions for adult marijuana offenses the City of Santa Cruz’s lowest law enforcement priority; (2) Enables the city to save tax dollars and police resources to be spent fighting violent and serious crime; and (3) Establishes a city policy supporting changes in state and federal laws that call for taxation and regulation for adult use of marijuana.

While we can't fully stop the war here in our city, we can set limits for the drug warriors in our midst. Equally important, we can put our city firmly on the side of ending marijuana prohibition and actively in support of sensible policies for adult marijuana use. We have till April 20th, literally 4/20, to gather 5,000 signatures. Read more

NWCRC Press Release re: Police Violence @ 3-4-06 Schumacher fur protest

Portland, 08.03.2006 06:38

"Last Saturday, Portland Police Bureau officers and at least one private security guard hired by Schumacher's Fur store appear to have used excessive force during the arrest of two protestors exercising their First Amendment rights. Video shot by fellow protestors and made available to the Northwest Constitutional Rights Center clearly shows Sgt. Larry Graham violently and intentionally twisting the arm of a protestor after he had been subdued to the ground.

"The video shows a private security guard believed to be working for Schumacher's pepper spraying observers and protestors as Sgt. Graham continued to twist the arm of the young man. The video also shows a second protestor slammed against the pavement by another police officer without apparent provocation.

All-out unofficial strike at Cottam Power Station near Lincoln

United Kingdom, 08.03.2006 05:11

A demonstration outside the power station at 7am on the 28/2/06 had Amicus stewards from Electricity Distribution in Mansfield, A Unison branch secretary from Ashfield, a couple of car loads of students from Nottingham, and supporters from as far off as Scunthorpe, turning up to join the picket line. They've gone back to raise money and other solid support.

50 construction workers, members of the GMB and Amicus, at Cottam Power Station near Lincoln are into the second week of an all-out unofficial strike. The issue is very simple: multinational companies are moving workers around the EU to undercut wages - in this case, as laid down in the Construction Industry "Blue Book". (Download PDF). They're trying to do an Irish Ferries on construction workers in Britain.
