Tom Fox Honored as a Peacemaker at Nashville Memorial

Tennessee, 17.03.2006 00:10

On Wednesday, March 15th friends and community members gathered at the Quaker meeting house in Nashville to celebrate and remember the life of Tom Fox, the Christian Peacemaker who was recently killed in Iraq. Fox, who had Tennessee ties having gone to High School in Chattanooga and to Peabody college to study music, was fondly remembered by friends and loved ones at the memorial service. The service, which consisted of a silent meditation and reading by Khaled Sakalla of the Nashville Islamic Center. Sakalla praised the work of Tom Fox and praised his quest for peace. Sakalla stated that the actions of those who tortured and killed Fox were not in line with the teachings of Islam. During the service the pariticipants held in memory the names Christian Peacemaker Team's Norman Kember, James Loney and Harmeet Singh Sooden who remain hostage in Iraq.

Franse Studenten in opstand tegen het CPE

Netherlands, 16.03.2006 21:09

Net Benefit: Fundraisers for FoE and Chiapas On Friday

Bristol, 16.03.2006 21:08

Friends of the Earth against the Airport, and Easton Basketballers to go to Chiapas Jane Stevenson writes: Bristol Friends of the Earth celebrate their return to full campaigning strength, with a benefit night at the Tube club. Having spent a little time in the doldrums, the group has been gaining in strength over the past year, and now needs to raise funds to maintain the pace of its high-profile anti Bristol Airport expansion campaign, and to help mount a challenge to the proposed south section of the Bristol ring road. Co-ordinator, Jane Stevenson, said: "Now is a great time to get involved with Bristol Friends of the Earth. People in rather high places are starting to take note of our Airport campaign, and we have a real chance of challenging the received wisdom that airport growth is always a good thing for the economy." "On Friday, people can help us to carry on fighting climate change, and have a great night out into the bargain. We'd like to thank the kind people at BlowPop for setting up this benefit night for us. Come along early, and all your door money will go into our campaigns." Meanwhile a contributor to the calendar offers a Party to celebrate imminent departure of Easton Cowgirls/boys basketball team to Chiapas, Mexico. Witnesses Report Police Brutality at Tesco Eviction

Bristol, 16.03.2006 16:38

Shepton Mallet evicted...... Shepton Mallet evicted...... Baliffs, entered the site of a new tesco, at around 0600 wednesday morning, but unlike the previous eviction the baliffs and police met serious resistance. The eviction was prolonged by people locked-on in tree houses and on the ground, several people in a net strung around 30-40ft off he ground, and others on 'walkways' (that is three ropes strung between trees, one for your feet two for balance) much higher up. Hwever, by midday, the eviction was over and by 4.00pm most of the trees had gone. You don't have to be a hippy to be gutted by how quick it is to destroy trees that were around when locals from shepton mallet were still smashing up spinning jennys....Overall,there were six arrests, of these four were for breach of the peace, and were later released without charge. However, there were two arrests for assaults, one for throwing a twig at a baliff, and the other for allegedlly assaulting a police officer....The person accused of the latter offence, was a local who had been involved in the campaign from the start, but had recentlu been extermley ill. In fact he had to walk with a stick. Witnesses said they saw him originally being peaceably escorted off the site by one policeman, and then another barged into him, a scuffle ensued and this poor man, who had never even been arrested before, was not only handcuffed, but had leg manacles on. He was then was stamped on by another one of Avon & Somerset's finest in the police van. He was later reported, to still being held at Yeovil Station, with among other injuries, a dislocated shoulder. People who have been assaulted by the police, often end up with police assault charges against them, to try and intimidate them from making a complaint. Witnesses to his initial arrest are needed...Full Article| shepton mallet evicted... | shepton mallet still going | day of action at shepton mallet | Shepton Mallet Eviction Alert | Tree Protest Camp established at Shepton Mallet, Somerset. Riots Erupt in France and Italy

San Diego, 15.03.2006 21:08

France: Student protests over 'Anglo-Saxon' job laws

THOUSANDS of students marched through Paris and blockaded universities across France as their revolt against the Government over a controversial new youth employment law intensified.

Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin has staked his reputation, and possibly his job, on a measure that aims to cut rampant youth unemployment with two-year contracts that enable employers to sidestep rigid French labour laws and fire young workers without reason.

From portland Indymedia: On march the 7th, 400.000 people demonstrated against a new law concerning workers, CPE. CPE "deregulates the job market. CPE means e.g. anyone who gets a new job can be fired within 2 years - at any day, without a cause... e.g. companies will now be allowed to let young employees work all night - if they are at least 15... and so on. CPE makes workers lose many of their rights...

All over France riots and Clashes with the police....some protesters heavily injured... In Toulouse protesters managed to occupy states´buildings... 300 pupils stopped a high speed train (TGV)... In Marseille 5000 pupils attacked police and police stations afters some arrests of demonstrators... schools are occupied by teachers and pupils, e.g. le college de france, or a school in Lannion and and and... in Lille states bulindings were occupied...

50 universities are on strike and/or occupied by students:

ITALY: massive riots in Milano

Italy, Milano. Massive riots started in the heart of the Italian financial capitol, Milano, when hundreds of antifascists attacked police because of their repressive behaviour. The police wanted to stop the antifascists from building barricades against a neofascists? march through Milano. Police lost control: Windows of Banks and Companies were broken, cars and buildings were set on fire, even a nail bomb exploded in a group of police men.... Many persons were injured, some heavily, 45 were arrested.

241-Mile March for Peace to Go From Tijuana to San Francisco

San Diego, 15.03.2006 21:08

Fernando Suarez del Solar, Pablo Paredes, Camilo Mejia, and Aidan Delgado will lead a "coalition of the willing" on a 241-mile quest for peace. They will start in Tijuana, Mexico on March 12th, go through Marine Corps Depot Camp Pendleton to the Cesar Chavez burial site in La Paz, CA (on March 22nd), and end in the Mission district of San Francisco with a memorial ceremony and blood drive on March 26th-27th.

Organizers say, "Latinos represent nearly 15% of the US population and 11% of the US military, with many serving in combat or hazardous duty occupations. In addition, an estimated 20% of the fallen service members in the early months of the invasion were Latino. With the continued growth of the Latino population and its vital importance to the future of this country, it is time the Latino community become an active and vocal part of the 60%+ of US citizens that oppose this War. It is also time to show the Latino community that they have a voice and a right to fight for peace and stability. We make this call not only to the Latino population but to all those who agree with our message 'No more bloodshed in Iraq'."

The March will pass through cities such as San Diego, Escondido, Santa Ana, Los Angeles, Rosamond, Keene (La Paz), Fresno, and San Jose. Read more, including info about the march route and initiators. The march is in need of help such as funding, volunteers, media, organizers, and donations.
