Early Morning Awareness on the Overpass

Portland, 19.03.2006 22:38

Some early risers took to the Everett Street overpass this morning, hoisting anti-war, anti-imperialist banners high above the freeway. Great job! (And me without my camera.)

As I was rushing on my way to another action this morning, I heard a car honk as I approached the crosswalk at the Everett St off ramp. I looked up to see a knot of colorfully dressed folks holding a sign admonishing people to stop war for profit. Looking across the road, I saw another crew, with a banner unfurled for the pleasure of the people on the freeway below. I recognized some of the good samaritans, others I do now know. I have to say, I love actions like this. Quietly organized without a big block of "sponsors," but tactically arranged to reach people with a message that ties this war with the root of all war. Venezuelan Labor Leader Speaks on Radical Unions and Democracy - Sunday!

Portland, 19.03.2006 15:38

Venezuelan union leader Luís Primo will speak Sunday March 19th, 7 PM at the United Brotherhood of Carpenters Local 247 (2215 N. Lombard). Sr Primo is the former president of the Caracas Transportation Workers Union and a leader in the new radical labor federation, the National Workers Union (UNT). He will share information about the Venezuelan Labor movement, Democracy, and novel ways the Bolivarian Revolution is fighting corporate globalization.

Venezuela is undergoing radical changes under the leadership of President Hugo Chavez. While U.S. officials like Donald Rumsfeld compare Chavez to Nazi leader Adolf Hitler, people throughout Latin America have increasingly followed Venezuela's lead in pushing back against Washington-backed economic orthodoxy and bringing the long-marginalized poor into the political process. While Chavez and Bush's public sparring grabs most U.S. headlines, a variety of social organizations and movements are responsible for having pushed Chavez into power and fueling what they call their "Bolivarian Revolution." Venezuelan union leader Luís Primo will speak to what is going on behind the headlines, specifically with regard to the labor movement's role in transforming Venezuela.

Keating Wins Green Nomination

Portland, 19.03.2006 07:39

Environmental activist Joe Keating won the Pacific Green Party's gubernatorial nomination today, marking the end of a down-to-the-wire race whose outcome hinged on a handful of provisional ballots. The week long wait to determine the winner followed a convention held in Corvallis on March 11. At that time, Ed Winslow, a pioneer in the socially responsible investing field, held a one vote lead over Keating.

M18: Rally in Eugene

Portland, 19.03.2006 07:39

March 18th, Eugene, OR: A March and Rally was held in Eugene to bring attention to the issue of peace in Iraq and all over. Here's a few things that people reported and photos they took from the open publishing newswire.

The rally was dry and the liberals wanted money, but a democrat called for class war and a young voice inspired me momentarily with a poem. Read More

Overall, I was impressed by the number and diversity of the attendees. It seems like an anti-war position is becoming more mainstream. Not a minute went by without people honking their horns in support or giving the peace sign and thumbs up.

Habitat of Newly Discovered Salamander Slated for Logging

San Francisco Bay Area, 19.03.2006 02:08

Environmental groups are suing over plans to log habitat for a newly discovered species of salamander. The Scott Bar Salamander, whose small habitat range lies in the Siskiyou Forest, was determined in May to be a separate species from the Klamath Mountains salamander, which is protected under the California Endangered Species Act. But upon learning the new status of the salamander, the Departments of Forestry and Fish & Game said protections would cease.

Over One Million Join Student Fight Against CPE

United Kingdom, 18.03.2006 19:38

Saturday 18th March: Update:
Over one Million people have demonstrated against the CPE in France following weeks of student unrest.
For breaking news see French IMCs: Paris | Lille | Toulouse | Marseille | Nantes | Liege | Auvergne | Grenoble and Libcom Blog

Since the start of March, protests, occupations and direct action against the new CPE employment law in France have been increasing, with university and school students leading the dissent. Railways have been blockaded, airports disrupted, and up to two thirds of France's universities have been occupied or disrupted, as well as many schools. Clashes with police have occured throughout the country.

On Thursday 16th March well over 300,000 people took part in growing protests throughout France [report and pics] as more universities were occupied, roads blockaded and the town hall in Rennes was occupied. In Paris up to 120,000 protested [report and pics | gallery] followed by clashes with police using tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannon [report and pics | gallery]. Around 150 arrests were made in Paris bringing the total to around 300, with over 40 police injured. (See also Censier University occupation report and pics).

Much international publicity came from the occupation and violent eviction by riot police of the Sorbonne university in Paris on Saturday 10th March [Video | Report + Pics | Gallery 1 2]. On Tuesday 14th the protests escalated as a student day of action saw thousands of school students taking part in occupations and blockades [report and pics | gallery] as well as more street fighting around the Sorbonne area [gallery].

The CPE is a new employment contract due to take effect in April. The CPE would allow firms to hire people aged under 26 for a two-year trial period, during which they could be easily dismissed without a reason. Students and others complain this will only increase the precarity of everyday life in France where unemployment currently runs at 10% and 50% in some areas.

March for Peace and Justice, Mobile to NOLA interview A brief interview with Huti Reynold's today. on the Veteran's and Survivors March for Peace and Justice from Mobile AL to New Orleans LA. A brief interview with Huti Reynold's today. on the Veteran's and Survivors March for Peace and Justice from Mobile AL to New Orleans LA. Huti our own Green Party of OK, Rural Greens, Tulsa Peace Fellowship, and Veterans for Peace member left Henryetta, OK for the March 11 am sun. with Jeri Reed and her son Daniel 18 years old and part time student at OU. They had car troubles in Dallas, so 12 hours later than they'd planned they got to Mobile, AL. Huti & Daniel slept on a warehouse floor in Pritchard, AL last night, about 10 miles from Mobile. At dinner they had a prayer over the food and Huti asked if he could say a Cherokee prayer over the food, and was welcomed to do so. This morning the Marchers met at a church in Mobile and started the March from there. Veterans Park in Mobile,AL had a ceremony.... Leg One from Stone St. Baptist Church to Veterans Memorial Park about 3 miles away. Huti started by carrying a sign and then got winded and rode for a bit. A hundred to two hundred marchers started. Huti called as they were pitching Jeri and Daniel's tent now at Bayou Le Batre, Mississippi. Locals are providing dinner. A 2000 DNC protester that Huti met, Grumble, is the designated cook. he's part of Food not Bombs. Huti met a local protestor of Veterans for Peace who said that his peace group gets about 5 to 1 support, kind of like us in Tulsa. I'm not sure about OKC. Huti says there are people there from all over, the farthest away is Hawaii. I asked him what signs he could see and he read one: "Walking to New Orleans, Veterans and Survivors March for Peace and Justice.".. There's a makeshift Shower set up with tarps, one for men and one for women. He just realized he didn't bring a towel or toothbrush! That's it for this report. Peace and Solidarity, joni
