precariopolis Bolkestein's directive, the struggle continues

The "Directive for the liberalization of services within the domestic EU market", better known by the name of the Dutch ex-commissioner that promoted it, Fritz Bolkestein, has been strongly modified after its approval by European Parliament. There is no doubt the mobilizations against it had been a key element to force the modifications that have been made to the initial proposal.

But we can't lower our guard, because the discussion process of this directive has not finished yet. Next step is in European Commission, where it will be revised before arriving to EU state's ministers Cabinet Meeting, where the modifications that has been made in the parliamentary procedure last February 16th can be accepted or refused.

In spite of everything, the "background noise" was and still is a decided bet for service liberalization and an indirect de-regulation of the conditions for accessing and realizing economic activities.

Public service workers out to protect pensions

United Kingdom, 28.03.2006 18:09

There was a large turnout for East Midlands rallys supporting public service workers’ day of action to protect their pensions.

In Nottingham hundreds marched from the Forest recreation ground to the city centre, while in Derby strickers picketed there workplaces.

The actions were called as part of what was hailed as the biggest industrial action since the General Strike in 1926.

Nottingham's new-look rinky-dink Thingy - which still needs a name - also also made another early outing to provide musis for the occassion.

Thousands March in Boston for Immigrant Rights

Boston, 28.03.2006 16:08

Boston, MA--Although march organizers expected numbers only in the hundreds, an estimated four to six thousand people came to the Boston Commons to rally in favor of immigrant rights. Inspired by huge crowds of people that rallied this past weekend in Los Angeles (estimated at 500 thousand to 1 million people) Chicago, Atlanta, Houston, Milwaukee, and other cities across the United States, Bostonian immigrants came out in mass to make a stand against legislation like Rep. James Sensenbrenner’s (R-WI) bill HR 4437.

Repressione in Bielorussia

Switzerland, 28.03.2006 12:07

30-40 tende sono state distrutte e circa 500 persone sono state arrestate.

7. Antifaschistischer Abendspaziergang in Bern

Switzerland, 28.03.2006 11:07

Letter from a detained anarchist in Barcelona

Portland, 28.03.2006 09:38

Greetings to all those who love me and to everyone that feel and practice solidarity. After a month and a half kidnapped, i think it's time to explain to all of you in a public manner how i see everything, although i have to say that there are days in which i see things in a more optimistic matter.

It seems like we are being one of the first experiments of the mossos d'esquadra and of their fight against what they call "anti-system movements, and it looks like they have their lessons well learned, since, without having any real evidence, they have managed to keep us in prison inventing and falisfying evidences.

Voting Rights and Social Justice in El Salvador: Three Portland Election Monitors Speak

Portland, 28.03.2006 09:38

Three Portland residents traveled to El Salvador this March as international elections observers. The Portland residents were part of a mission of 36 observers from the United Status, Spain, Switzerland, and Germany. The mission traveled to El Salvador to witness the transparency in the electoral process, which is an element of the democratization as established by the 1992 Peace Accords that ended a 12-year civil war between a poor people's guerrilla army and a right-wing, U.S.-backed military government.

Delegates will share their experiences from El Salvador Saturday April 1, 7 PM at the Musicians Hall (325 NE 20th Ave, Portland). The event is free and open to the public.

Mike-D. Circus Protest Trial in Progress; Jury Still Out, Gathering Tomorrow at 9:30a.m

Portland, 28.03.2006 09:38

The Trial began at about 11:00 a.m., the judge stated he only had time for a trial ending today, with maybe an hour to finish up tomarrow, if need be. The Motions were made and most of them denied, in one form or another, with a partial granting here and there. The Jury Pool arrives, a high percentage of them being students, on spring break, most of the jurors had been to a circus, a few had been to some type of protest and/or had family involved with protesting. After Jury questioning and selection, the trial began first with state witness Julie Van Hee, a supervisor of security, for Coast-to-Coast Event Security contracted by the Rose Garden staff. After her testimony, direct and cross examination, with a quick re-direct. Judge Amiton sent everyone to lunch about 1:00p.m. telling all to be back at 2:00p.m. for the rest of the trial.

Schumacher Furs Protest Report ("The protesters just don't understand!"), March 25

Portland, 28.03.2006 09:38

Apparently, Greg Schumacher told someone this Saturday that protesters "just don't understand" - after all, he himself doesn't actually kill the animals. So, what's our problem with Schumacher Furs?

Hmm. While that Greg is certainly some logician, we'd probably have a problem with any business or person who orders and profits from the torture and killing of defenseless beings, whether they themselves are tightening the wire noose around the animal's neck, or skinning her alive. And those pathetic Schumacher commercials promoting cruelty as glamour, proclaiming, "Want more sex? Get more sexy!" with women in furs don't help the case.

Throughout the day, over 25 protesters stood in the cold and rain to leaflet, chant, hold signs and educate the public about the fur trade. Protesters drew pictures of some of the animals killed for the fur industry (foxes, minks, squirrels) in chalk on the sidewalk. One protester brought his guitar and enthusiastically sang anti-fur songs. We received many positive comments from passersby.

Hundreds Protest Ann Coulter at Loyola Visit, Three Arrested

Chicago, 28.03.2006 07:38

Ann Coulter, right-wing pundit and author notorious for racist, reactionary and recidivist comments and quotes, faced hundreds of people who turned out in protest on the campus of Chicago's Loyola University on March 23, 2006, where Coulter was slated to give a speech. Three people were arrested at the Coulter protest, including one individual who was assaulted by police according to eyewitnesses.

Students subsequently entered the lecture, and the first arrest apparently occurred when law enforcement collared one individual for chanting. During Coulter's question and answer session the crowd chanted her down, and she fled the stage. Read more

OKC immigration rally SATURDAY!

Oklahoma, 28.03.2006 03:38

Announcement The League of United Latin American Citizens of Oklahoma are sponsoring a Rally on Saturday, April 1, 2006 at 12:00 noon, at the State Capitol (South Steps) 2300 N. Lincoln Blvd., to listen to our state’s ethnic and diverse cultural leaders and representatives speak on finding better solutions for immigration related issues facing Oklahoma. Day of Unity for Compassionate and Comprehensive Immigration Reform The League of United Latin American Citizens of Oklahoma are sponsoring a Rally on Saturday, April 1, 2006 at 12:00 noon, at the State Capitol (South Steps) 2300 N. Lincoln Blvd., to listen to our state’s ethnic and diverse cultural leaders and representatives speak on finding better solutions for immigration related issues facing Oklahoma. The day of unity is for collective prayer, understanding, compassion and moral strength to help us elevate the immigration debate from bashing immigrants to preserving American ideals and promoting our national interests. Proposed legislation is fraught with potential civil and human rights violations, it jeopardizes our economic future, criminalizes “good Samaritans”; its inherent racial profiling language marginalizes legal residents and citizens of color; it denies voters access. Without verifiable facts that immigrants are responsible for all our societal ills, this harsh legislation gambles our communities’ health and safety on myths and fear tactics. Better solutions to the broken immigration system will require respect, humane treatment and positive incentives to untangle emotion from reality in this debate. Oklahoma recognizes its positive growth has been immigrant-influenced. Removing the extremes from the immigration equation increases our state’s economic and societal prospects well into the future. A time to pause and endorse a state economic immigrant impact study is needed. Legislation without supportable facts is reckless. The state-wide Day of Unity encourages everyone to invest their time with us; join hands, pray with us and speak with one united voice. We also encourage everyone to make plans to arrive early to give your self enough time to find parking. Event: LULAC Day of Unity for Compassionate Comprehensive Immigration Reform Date: Saturday, April 1, 2006 Time: 12 Noon to 2:00 PM Location: State Capitol (South Steps) 2300 N. Coal Industry Lobbyists Create a Stink at Te Papa

Aotearoa, 28.03.2006 02:10

Today coal industry lobby group Coal Representatives Against Progressive Policy (CRAPP) protested against the 'Climate Change and Governance' conference, held at Te Papa. With slogans such as 'Kyoto Schmyoto' and 'Save My Six-figure Salary', CRAPP claimed that seriously combating Climate Change would jeopardise the massive bonuses and perks they get for producing one of the world’s most polluting sources of CO2 emissions. “Although today's CRAPP protest is light-hearted street-theatre, climate change is a serious threat to New Zealanders and the environment”, said Timothy Bailey, Wellington spokesperson for the Save Happy Valley Coalition.

Indymedia-AktivistInnen aus Weißrussland rufen zu Solidarität auf!

Austria, 28.03.2006 01:37

Hey, General Assembly of MD: ”Reverse Deregulation!”

Baltimore, 27.03.2006 23:09

Most Marylanders can expect their electric bills to go up by $743 a year-a 74 % increase! In 1999, the legislature deregulated the industry. In a sweetheart deal, BGE was absorbed by Constellation Energy and required to begin buying its electricity on the open market. Meanwhile, BGE’s electric-generating assets, originally paid for by the people, were turned over to Constellation in “a cash-free shuffle.” The ratepayers are now being asked to pay again!

Ban all non-biodegradable packaging

United Kingdom, 27.03.2006 21:09

producer pays? – well no actually Here's the thing thing. I get really pissed of when on the one hand as individual I am told recycle recycle and switch off my lights and don't have baths (blah blah like I need telling........) whilst at the same time corporations are left alone to light and heat corporate building 24/7, water companies make massive profits for shareholders while water pours out of unrepaired mains pipes and manufacturers of stuff, supermarkets and fast food chains produce mountains of unnecessary packaging loads of which cannot be recycled and is destined for landfill or incineration. We pay for the privilege of having a recycling collection service (if we are lucky) or we pay the financial, health and environmental costs of it all being chucked into and landfill or incineration. All to get rid of rubbish we don't need or want in the first place. Now that doesn't seem right.
