Schumachers Present Rambling Diatribe Before City Council Today

Portland, 06.04.2006 08:38

This morning, Linda and Greg Schumacher, along with their security guard, their accountant, and a friend from Zell Brothers jewelry store (located across the street from Schumachers) all railed against what Greg called "domestic terrorists." To bolster their case, they brought along a sheaf of email correspondence and copies of various Oregon Revised Statutes, which they claim show that the city needs to start arresting people for demonstrating in front of their fur store.

Marines Patrol Streets in Toledo Ohio

Portland, 06.04.2006 08:38

Twice in the last month 20-30 marine reservists, fully attired in camo, and armed to the teeth with semi-automatic machine guns patrolled the streets of downtown Toledo, OH for an entire weekend. The Blade said they were authorized to fire live blanks at innocent civilians. I first noticed them outside the window of the school where I teach...they walked within feet of a bus stop where two schools worth of students stood confused, scared, and horrified. I took the following photo from my 4th floor window...

Haunsperger strikes again

Portland, 06.04.2006 08:38

I was biking home from work and, having not been downtown in quite a while, I ended up on Pine and then on 5th, the bus mall. I biked in the car lane, trying to figure out my escape route. A bus was on my right in the bus lane and I'd noticed an unmarked police cruiser sitting right by the driveway into Big Pink's parking lot. While I'm riding slowly, behind a bus, the cop flies up behind me, lights on, just as I get to Oak. Not knowing what's happening, I turn right in the crosswalk onto the sidewalk and disembark. When he got out, he gave me the ticket and said he'd cited me for an illegal right turn and riding in the bus lane- neither of which was true when he'd turned on his lights. I'd panicked and looked to get out of his way, and as a result, got a $600 ticket.

April 10th Day Without an Immigrant

San Francisco Bay Area, 06.04.2006 04:40

On April 10th, 2006, immigrants and their allies will continue the recent historic mobilizationsin cities all over the US to oppose HR 4437. They have been demanding real immigration reform that is comprehensive, respects civil rights, reunites families, protects workers, and offers a path to citizenship for the current undocumented and future immigrants to the US. In California, organizations in cities such as San Jose, Fresno, and Los Angeles are planning to show what California would look like if immigrants did not work in positions such as dishwashers, cooks, housecleaners, nannies, gardeners, office workers, and in dozens of other jobs.

United Nations slams Government over Maori Rights

Aotearoa, 05.04.2006 22:10

A recent United Nations Report of the Special Rapporteur, Mexican Professor Rodolfo Stavenhagen on the situation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous people in New Zealand has been slammed by the Labour government as, "disappointing, unbalanced and narrow."

The report itself is a damming indictment of the state of New Zealand race relations and sets out a number of recommendations for government to undertake in order to fulfil its obligations in order to "bridge the existing gaps and consolidate the achievements obtained so far to reduce inequalities and protect Maori rights."

UN Report On Indigenous Rights and Fundamental Freedoms

Moana Jackson on the Rapporteur's Report

Peace Movement Aotearoa-Resources on Indigenous peoples' rights (Aotearoa)

The power of international embarrassment should not be underestimated. The Report is not binding but its considered views and recommendations will be tabled at the UN and hopefully used by Maori and other fair-minded people as another tool to hold the government to account.-Moana Jackson

Jenin Anniversary Palestine Demo Gets Noticed at BU on Monday

Boston, 05.04.2006 18:09

Several Palestine solidarity activists protested a traveling recruitment fair for the Jewish state on Monday at BUs Marsh chapel. It was the fourth anniversary of the invasion and massacre in the Jenin refugee camp and the open presence of supporters of the apartheid occupation regime in Palestine was particularly offensive. Boston, 05.04.2006 17:09

A crowd of people gathered outside the site of BU's proposed biolab late Tuesday afternoon and fell down "dead," faces streaked with fake blood. "We wanted to show the public what an outbreak might look like," said Derek Garcia, a Boston-area resident. The street theater, which was staged by anti-biolab protestors, was intended to draw attention to the dangers of placing a Biosafety Level 4 (BSL4) facility in the middle of a densely-populated urban area. Participants included members of the direct action campaign Operation: Over, people from the Coalition to Stop the Bioterrorism Lab, and members of the Green-Rainbow Party.

One year after the historic agreement with Taco Bell, the Coalition of Immokalee Workers and its allies embarked on a McDonald’s Truth Tour. The caravan bought its message of real rights for farmworkers to over 13 cities in 10 days.

In 2004 Taco Bell was the first player in the crowded field of fast food to take social responsibility for its supply chain. McDonald’s is not only balking at the demand of a fair wage, only a penny more per pound of tomatoes, but actively undermining the progress of the CIW and the agricultural industry. In response to the CIW’s request that McDonald’s come to the table with farmworkers, McDonald’s proposed that the fox guard the henhouse, otherwise known as SAFE , and ignored the core demands of the CIW.

Public Access Series: TheNational Summit To Save Our Elections

Portland, 05.04.2006 14:38

Beginning on April 4, 2006, on channel 21, a three month series will highlight the fraud and disenfranchisement which characterized the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections. This report provides audio files of featured speakers as well as playback schedules for the series.

This series is produced from presentations given on Saturday, October 1, at the National Summit To Save Our Elections, which was held in Portland Oregon, at the First Unitarian Church, September 30-October 2, 2005. Reportback: Tuesday Evening At The Recruitment Center

Portland, 05.04.2006 13:08

Tonight I went to the Military Recruiting Center up on 1317 NE Broadway. Every Tuesday from 5:30 - 6:30 a small handful of dedicated people stand outside the Recruiting Center with anti-war signs and hand out literature to passersby. They have been doing this weekly for many months now. Catholic Workers, and at least one Veteran For Peace, they stand as a counterpoint to the military machines recruitment center. They stand for truth, while recruiters use deception and lies to lure in young people as fodder for wars of aggression.

Schumacher Furs Protest Report (the Year of the Dog), April 1

Portland, 05.04.2006 13:08

About 50 protesters (ranging in age from 7 months to 80 years) showed up throughout the day Saturday to leaflet, hold signs, make sidewalk art, and chant against the fur industry's abuse of animals. It was a great day with new people, lots of enthusiasm, and lots of support from passersby. Many people thanked us for being there while others honked and waved as they drove past. The Oregonian, The Portland Tribune, and Channel 2 news showed up as well.

A few dismal manikins wearing dead animals stared blankly out from the glass display case windows, while the Schumacher folks, some also wearing dead animals, stared blankly out from behind the big glass doors (in actuality they're seething inside, evidenced by their public announcements and numerous threats to protesters). A cluster of police stood across the street, and police cars drove by periodically, but all was calm. A few people posing as customers went in - from appearances we doubt they were there to buy fur but instead to support the Schumachers amidst growing controversy - but there wasn't really much activity for Schumacher Furs.

Louise Nicholas - we believe you

Aotearoa, 05.04.2006 06:12

On Monday morning a group of women handed out over a thousand leaflets at the Wellington Railway Station and again in Manners Mall in the afternoon informing commuters about information suppressed - and still suppressed - in the Louise Nicholas police rape case. A spokeswoman for the group said "it has come to our attention that continuing to spread this information may negatively affect other rape survivors and this is the last thing we want. It is extremely frustrating that in this culture of secrecy we cannot even talk about why we are no longer handing out the leaflets. It is impossible for women to find justice within the misogynist legal system." It is unsure at this point if charges will be made against those who handed out the leaflets. [ Cop Media Release ] A dozen women protested at open day of the Royal New Zealand Police College on Saturday unfurling banners such as "We believe you Louise Nicholas" and "Cops Rape". They continued their campaign with a vigil in Cuba Mall on Tuesday.
