New York rolls out the unwelcome mat for the Republican National Convention

Richmond, 20.08.2004 19:35

The Republican National Convention is more than a week away in NYC. The city is positively abuzz with its defiant response to the Republican Party’s neo-conservative, rightwing agenda and the party’s plans to turn midtown Manhattan into a militarized police state during the convention. Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to take the streets in several marches the week of the convention.

Protest Organizers Listen to Grassroot Protests, Renew Request for Central Park for Rep Conv Protest

Hudson Mohawk, 20.08.2004 19:35

United for Peace and Justice, the organizers of the large protest rally planned for the Republican National convention on Sunday, Aug. 29th, are now rejecting the settlement reached with the City Police Department for West Side Highway and are asking again for Central Park. UPFJ leaders faced a stormy revolt at their last meeting from grassroots activists, many of whom announced they would go to Central Park even without a permit. Buses are being organized from the Capital District. A Green World is Possible Festival will be in Washington Square Park on Saturday, Aug. 28. On Aug. 31 / Sept. 1, there is a conference on universal health care with Amy Goodman, Tim Robbins, Michael Moore, and more.

Many Newspapers Plan Extensive Coverage of RNC Protests

NYC, 20.08.2004 15:40

Leading newspapers across the country are planning to pay a good deal of attention to those protesting the Republican National Convention, which begins here Aug. 30. Several papers, including The Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, The Philadelphia Daily News, Newsday of Melville, N.Y., and The Dallas Morning News, will have reporters on hand whose primary duty will be to cover protests and security.

But most of the editors and political reporters interviewed by E&P do not think this year's RNC protests will rival those of the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago or the 1972 Republican National Convention in Miami.

Emergency Hearing Today: NLG Lawsuit on Central Park

NYC, 20.08.2004 12:18

One of at least two legal attemps to force the city of New York to open up Central Park to peaceful political protest during the RNC, the National Lawyers Guild/Partnership for Civil Justice lawsuit to overturn Mayor Bloomberg and the City of New York's denial of free speech rights in Central Park has been scheduled for an emergency hearing in Federal District Court in Manhattan.

The hearing will be held at the Southern Federal District of New York Courthouse, 500 Pearl Street, this Friday, August 20 at 2:30 p.m. in the Courtroom of Judge William H. Pauley, III.

Also in the legal arena, United For Peace and Justice filed suit to force the city to open Central Park on Wednesday. The court rejected the city's motion to dismiss the suit outright, and the first hearing will be on Monday. Many activists are wondering if UFPJ has a back-up plan should they lose in court.

Bear Story III & The Ministry of Natural Resources

Hamilton, 19.08.2004 23:48

#media_3246041;right#Since writing about the events surrounding the death of a young bear near Greenville last month, the Ministry of Natural Resources has given some response to questions I still had regarding the tragic event. When asked what will be done to prevent such from reoccurring, Communications Specialist Bill Murch, stated that they have assessed the event and found no fault was found with any of the agencies involved. However suggestions have been made to formalise the Ministry’s response when dealing with a bear “outside” it’s range. The changes under consideration would aid the response of properly trained and equipped staff. See also: Bear Necessity Black Bear Killed in Greenville

Save Educational Radio in Detroit---Oppose the Leasing of WRCJ, 90.9 FM

Michigan, 19.08.2004 16:40

A broad group of community activists have formed a committee to oppose the leasing of Detroit Public Schools Radio, WRCJ, to private, outside interests.

Over the years more people have relied on 90.9 FM to provide an alternative, non-commercial approach to broadcasting, something that is rare in today's media world of homogenized broadcasting where the corporate community and federal government determines the limits of what topics can be discussed and what music can be played. With the increasing uncertainty over the future of the station, a group of community activists, professionals, media personalities, educators and businesspersons have begun to meet and plan a course of action aimed at continuing the non-commercial educational orientation of W-RCJ.

Stop Ethnic Cleansing In Essex

United Kingdom, 19.08.2004 13:01

Travellers or Roma have faced oppression, murder, sterilisation and genocide from successive European governments, including the Nazis and the current regimes. In Essex, the situation is currently worsening for Travellers. The British Nationalist Party have won 3 seats on Epping Forest District Council with their neo-Nazi pledge to drive out the local Gypsy people.

A young mother with triplets and an elderly couple, who had lived on their own land at Paynes Lane, Lower Nazeing, Essex, for l4 years, along with other families were evicted in June. Another man was sent to prison for 28 days for living on his own land, and a judge is threatening to imprison his wife and children if they don't move from land they bought at Colney Hatch. The council now hope to evict the last remaining couple from Paynes Lane on 22nd August, despite the fact that they have been paying council tax for over 10 years.

Anti-racist and Gypsy Council campaigners are planning a rally to counter the eviction at Paynes Lane 22nd August. The rally will include the unveiling of a Memorial Field for Roma victims of the Holocaust, and will celebrate the survival of Romani culture with music and food.

Chavez Wins Referendum

Aotearoa, 18.08.2004 23:34

Controversial left-wing president Hugo Chavez has defeated his opponents electorally in a referendum called to remove him from power. The Venezuelan National Electoral Commission (CNE) announced the preliminary result at 4:03AM on 16th August in Caracas: Chavez had gained 58% of votes cast. Hundreds of thousands of people immediately began partying in the streets while waiting to see what the anti-popular forces would do next.

The result has since been confirmed by the US-based Carter Centre and Organization of American States election monitors, although the right-wing opposition - despite a lack of evidence - maintained that massive voting fraud had taken place and called for a rally in the middle of Caracas... Subsequently, claims that "Chavez supporters" opened fire on the demonstration have not been verified, although reportedly 8 people were wounded; the Venezuelan opposition has had a history of faking attacks on demonstrations: [ 1 ] [2 ][ 3 ][ video ]
