May 1st 2006: General Strike | Huelga General | Boycott | Walkout | Buy Nothing | Sell Nothing
graphic by schock at riseup d0t net

Quick on the heels of the massive March 25th mobilizations and the student walkouts during the following week, April 10th was a historic day of action for immigrant rights across the USA. Tens of thousands of people took the streets in Los Angeles [ 1 | 2 ] and in Santa Ana, while 5,000 marched in St. Louis and 10,000 raised their voices in the largest march in Fresno's history. San Diego also made history with a march of up to 100,000 people on April 9th. There were mobilizations in the Bay Area, in Tennessee, in Rochester, NY, and in DC. In Portland, up to 8,000 marched, while thousands gathered in Love Park in Philly. Allies mobilized in Pittsburgh. In Arizona, people were on the move in Flagstaff. There were major marches and actions in NYC and Boston, and Houston Indymedia provided a blow by blow of actions in Texas. In Puerto Rico, hundreds took the streets of Barrio Obrero. (These amazing stories are just a small sample of coverage of April 10th actions across the country; for more go to your local IMC.) Congress has been forced to backpeddle on brutal anti-immigrant legislation, but they are nowhere near to meeting the demands of the movement, especially amnesty for all. So the movement for immigrant justice keeps rising, with more major actions planned in the coming weeks: April 15th is a student day of action, and May 1st will be a historic day of action, with calls for a general strike, boycott, no sales or purchases, walkouts, marches, and actions in financial centers and at anti-immigrant corporations throughout the country.

Go GE FREE now!

Aotearoa, 14.04.2006 13:40

During April and the start of May district and regional councils are accepting submissions for their Long Term Council Community Plans. Following on from the Waikato District Council Plan hearings GE Free Whaingaroa, based in Raglan, is encouraging people in other regions to submit to their own council that GE is an issue they need to address.

With encouragement from GE Free Northland and other groups the councils of Northland have commissioned a combination of legal reports and expert opinions confirming they not only need to regulate GMOs but that they can regulate their release into the environment. GE Free Whaingaroa built on this to construct a very compelling submission in it’s attempt to get Waikato District to become the first in the country to regulate for GMOs.

"I think even we were surprised at the success we had in engaging our councillors in this issue" said John Lawson from GE Free Whaingaroa. "As a fairly conservative council they would have preferred to steer clear of the whole GE debate but after our presentation they have decided that it is no longer an option and will be doing further research of their own."

The pursuit of justice for David Hicks

Adelaide, 14.04.2006 01:08

Adelaide-born David Hicks has been incarcerated in the United States' notorious military prison at Guantanamo Bay for over 4 years. Unlike other countries such as Britain which have successfully negotiated the return of their nationals, the Australian Government has consistently refused to negotiate for a fair deal for Hicks, who now faces trial under the controversial military commision system. Hicks, who has a claim to British citizenship, achieved a victory on 12 April 2006 when the British Court of Appeals dismissed the UK Government's attempt to overturn his citizen's rights. In Adelaide on the same day a public meeting was organised by Fair Go for David, bringing together Hicks' legal counsels and his father to update the large audience on the progress of the campaign to bring him home. Civil Rights: The Second Wave, Bostonians Call for a Humane Immigration Policy

Boston, 13.04.2006 23:09

Imagine trying to cross the border from Mexico into the United States in the blistering heat of the summer, a trip that many people don’t survive, and running into an enormous wall that stretches as far as you can see in both directions for miles upon miles. Imagine suddenly becoming a felon, not because you committed a felony, but because the government changed the laws. Imagine getting arrested and spending three years in a federal prison for giving food and clothing to an immigrant. Imagine getting deported. Imagine facing even more racial profiling and harassment from police than you already do because 11 million “criminals” are running loose with the same skin color as you. This will be a reality if Congress passes “The Border Protection, Antiterrorism, and Illegal Immigration Control Act of 2005,” also known as H.R. 4437. As Malena Mayorga, a community organizer for the local immigrant advocacy group Centro Presente, put it: “We’re not going to sit back and be obedient slaves.”

April 4th 2006 Legal Update regarding tre arrow

Portland, 13.04.2006 16:39

Hello to you all, it's tre here at wilkie. I'm doing well, and holding strong through this 23rd day of my hunger strike. I've received word from my lawyer that the minister of justice, Vic Toews, is postponing his decision on whether or not to surrender me for extradition. By Monday, April 24th, we will know his official decision.

Even if he decides to surrender me, this doesn't mean that I'm going to be swooped away to the states the next day! If the desicion is not favorable, my lawyer will file the necessary paperwork notifying the minister of our intention to appeal his decision. This appeal could take a long time, therefore, I most likely will not be leaving Canada anytime soon.

Thank you for your continued support, love, prayers, and energy. This extension gives us all an opportunity to send the minister, and all his associates, who are deciding my fate, much abundant light and positive intention to make a just and fair decision.

love, peace, and solidarity
namaste,

Wisconsin Towns Vote for Immediate US Military Withdrawal from Iraq

Portland, 13.04.2006 16:39

On Tuesday, April 4, 32 communities in the state of Wisconsin voted on referenda calling for the immediate withdrawal of all American military forces from Iraq. Of these areas, 24 voted for immediate withdrawal, and eight voted against. In the Milwaukee suburb of Shorewood, 70 percent voted for immediate withdrawal.
The referenda results represent a major embarrassment for both big-business political parties in the US, as well as for the media, which consistently present the Bush administration's "war on terror" as enjoying a popular mandate, while attempting to marginalize any opposition. What these referenda reveal is that while the war may be fully supported by the media and big-business politicians, it is widely opposed by the broad masses of ordinary people in the US.

Significantly, when the same choice was put before the US Congress in November of last year, only 3 congressmen—less than 1 percent—voted for immediate withdrawal, and 403 against. Both the Democratic and the Republican candidates in the 2004 presidential elections were in favor of continuing the war in Iraq indefinitely.

The broad popular opposition to the war revealed by the referenda immediately provoked defensive remarks and denunciations from the Bush administration.

New article by Jeff Free Luers - on state repression

Portland, 13.04.2006 16:39

By now everyone knows about the arrests and indictments handed down to 11 people charged with ELF actions. The SHAC 7 have been convicted on all counts for maintaining a website. Rod Coronado has been arrested for explaining how he committed his arsons. Activists have been arrested in Sacramento charged with thought crime. Not to mention the various Grand Jury investigations around the country.

Like it or not, the radical movement has found itself in the middle of a war. The ELF, ALF, anarchists and other radicals have been declared the number one threat to the state. The FBI devotes more time and energy to activists than it does Al-Qaeda.

For every article I write, I wonder if this will be the one that lands me back in the hole. The FBI, in connection with the Oregon Department of Corrections, reviews all my outgoing mail. Some of my mail has been censored and not allowed to go out at all. I am banned from meeting with the media. None of those who were arrested are allowed to contact me, or allowed to be contacted by me.

I'm beginning to feel a lot more like a P.O.W. than a political prisoner.

"This is a state of emergency. Not only our success, but also our existence depends on your actions. The police state is here. Everything we've long feared is coming to pass. This isn't someone else's fight anymore, it's yours. What are you going to do about it?"

Organizer on death row to be executed

Portland, 13.04.2006 16:39

Hasan Shakur has organized concerts, organizations, events and put out newsletters from a death row cell dealing with liberation of black people and all people. Now the state of Texas has set his execute date for April 27, to silence his voice.

Working with the Human Rights Coalition, a prisoner family organizing project headquartered out of Philadelphia, I have had the amazing opportunity and honor to meet Hasan Shakur, aka Derrick Frazier ##999284. Hasan sits on the advisory council, the governing board of HRC. He also sits on Texas' death row, and has been there for all of his adult life. As I got to know Hasan, I was blown away by the work and commitment this brotha did. From a cell in one of Texas' most notorious units, without access to phone calls or human contact, he has been able to organize fundraising concerts to stop violence in the communities on the outside. He is able to put out a newsletter about prison issues more consistently than most organizations in the "free" world are able to.

And now the state is saying that Hasan's time is up. It does not care that Hasan was barely older than a teenager when the state decried he should die. It does not care that he was represented by ineffective counsel who was later disbarred, who did nothing to rebut the state's case against him, to prove his character and show any mitigating circumstances.

Please write and call the governor and ask for a stay of execution. Go to Hasan's website www.hasanshakur.com. Sign the petition to save his life at www.hasanshakur.com.

April 10th update on Darren Thurston

Portland, 13.04.2006 15:38

On Friday, March 26th Darren was put in lockdown at Multnomah Inverness for possession of another inmate's ibuprofen (Advil). Although Darren is allowed to have ibuprofen by prescription, he was given some extras by another inmate which corrections officials found during a shakedown of his range. For this Darren served five days in the hole, and upon completion was sent back to Multnomah County Detention Center for a 30 day period (in order to "reintegrate" him into the law-abiding population at Inverness).

* Darren will be transferred down to California for arraignment on the new charges likely at the end of the month. We expect this trip to be brief, as we hope that Darren's Portland lawyer (Dan Feiner) will be able to handle the cases in both states, which would necessitate Darren being moved back to Inverness in Portland to be within easy access of his legal support.

* We encourage people to keep sending letters to Darren at MCDC for the next couple of weeks (lots of letters right now would really help to boost his spirits, so get writing people!) Please stop sending books for the time being as he won't be able to take anything with him when he goes to Sacramento.

Young Jews Support Palestinian Rights, Challenge AIPAC and JCRC by Holding Seder Outside Their Offices

Boston, 13.04.2006 14:09

On Tuesday, April 11, at 5:00 pm, 20 young Jewish people gathered for a seder (traditional celebration of Passover) outside 126 High Street in Boston, the building that houses the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and Boston's Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC). The group expressed their support for Palestinian human rights and opposition to AIPAC’s and JCRC’s unquestioning support for Israel and its governmental policies. With a banner that read “Passover means liberation for all. Justice for Palestine,” they conveyed the message to the organizations inside and to the media that AIPAC and JCRC do not speak for all Jews.

Democracy in Action at Champaign Unit 4 School Board Meeting

Urbana-Champaign, 13.04.2006 06:16

On Monday evening, April 10th, on a lark, I turned on the community access TV channel, which for me, like for many folks, is sadly too often one more channel to click over in futile pursuit of substantial entertainment. There, in front of a jerky camera, an African American woman was making an impassioned plea to the Unit 4 School Board to withdraw their proposal to hire armed police officers to patrol inside our community’s schools. I listened for a few moments, and then reached for my jacket and car keys, hoping that by the time I drove the ten blocks down to the Mellon building, she would still be standing behind the podium and it wouldn’t be too late to show some sign of support.
