Dublin Bus Drivers Victimised for Joining Union and Organising

Ireland, 22.08.2004 16:55

Three Drivers Suspended Without Pay . From the Newswire:Three bus driver employees of Bus Atha Cliath / Dublin Bus have been suspended without pay for almost four weeks now, for daring to join and be members of the trade union of their choice, the Independent Workers Union. While peaceably distributing information about their union, on request, in their own time and their own work place they were harassed and victimised by members of Dublin Bus management in clear violation of their constitutional, legal and industrial rights and in clear contravention of current legislation which protects workers in pursuit of their trade union rights. Suspension without pay is illegal and is a vicious attack not alone on the worker but on his or her family and dependents. Current legislation prohibits the suspension, harassment and victimisation of workers who legally carry out trade union activity in their work place. Other drivers in various depots of Dublin Bus are also facing suspension and possible dismissal, even some who are on sick leave, for being members of the Independent Workers Union, which is a fully licensed and legal trade union. Despite the best efforts of the employees and this trade union to have the matter settled in a fair, just and equitable manner the response of Dublin Bus management is more like what could be expected from the “Sopranos” rather than from a modern sophisticated management structure. Ironically this is from a company that was recently declared one of the top 50 Irish companies to work for; surely it must have been 50th from the bottom? In light of the hardship that our colleagues are suffering we are now appealing to members of the wider Trade Union Movement and to the public at large for their assistance and support. THE MIAMI MODEL screens in Ashland & Klamath Falls

Rogue Valley, 22.08.2004 12:25

In November, 2003, trade ministers from 34 countries met in Miami, Florida,to negotiate the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA). The FTAA threatens to devastate workers, the environment, and public services like health care, education, and water, and to destroy indigenous rights and cultural diversity across North, Central, and South America.

Thousands of union members, environmentalists, feminists, anarchists, students, farm workers, media activists, and human rights activists who gathered in Miami to struggle against the FTAA were brutally attacked with rubber bullets, pepper spray, electric guns and shock batons, embedded reporters and information warfare, all coordinated by the new United States Department of Homeland Security.

Back to Back Direct Actions for Cascadia's Forests!

Santa Cruz, CA, 21.08.2004 19:09

This week forest defenders across Cascadia united to expose the link between the politicans and corporations that profit from the destruction of US public lands. On Tuesday, 40 Cascadians occupied US Senator Ron Wyden's office. The following day, a protester dressed as a spotted owl locked to a 250 pound stump while others rallied, shutting down Umpqua Bank's flagship branch for several hours.

Both Umpqua Bank and Senator Wyden greenwash their images, depicting themselves as environmentally friendly while supporting and profiting from the destruction of Oregon's native forests. Senator Wyden presents himself as a green politican, and yet of all US politicans he is the fifth highest recipient of campaign contributions from the timber industry. Meanwhile, he sponsors earth-destroying legislation with eco-friendly names like the "Healthy Forest Restoration Act."

Similarly, Umpqua Bank markets itself as a new, hip, eco-conscious bank. In reality "StUmpqua" Bank is run by the dinosaurs of Oregon's ancient forest logging industry. With the past two days of forest actions, local activists are gearing up for the upcoming Earth First! Direct Action Rendezvous in Southwest Oregon the final weekend in August, near the massive Biscuit logging project. The National Earth First! Rendezvous will be held in Oregon in Summer 2005.

Trial By Fire: The SHAC 7 and the Future of Democracy

Arkansas, 21.08.2004 18:44

It remains to be seen if activists involved in other causes will truly understand the indictment of the SHAC 7 in its broadest social and historical context, thereby showing solidarity with the myriad of SHACtivists and other direct action militants on the front lines of protest, making sure that their voices are anything but a whisper. Meanwhile, the animal liberation cause continues to grow throughout the world, establishing itself as both an heir of the great human liberation movements and a transcendent force that carries the fight for rights, justice, and equality toward its logical fulfillment. The struggle for “civilization” continues.

Maintaining solidarity after the protests: Lessons from 2000

Boston, 21.08.2004 00:14

As the RNC draws near, this article looks at a few of the lessons learned over the 3.5-year solidarity campaign to support Camilo Viveiros, who was ultimately acquitted this Spring for charges stemming from the protests outside the RNC in 2000 in Philadelphia. A ocal tenant organizer, Camilo Viveiros, along with fellow demonstrators Darby Landy and Eric Steinberg, had stood accused of assaulting police officers, including then-Philadelphia Police Chief John Timoney, during demonstrations which saw over 400 people arrested. The cases against nearly all other defendants had crumbled long before, leaving these defendants, dubbed the “Timoney Three,” as the scapegoats on whose backs the city could try to prove that its repressive police actions were justified. Over the three and a half years between the RNC and the acquittals, Camilo's allies built a strong campaign to build support for him while also raising larger issues of injustice and repression. The support of community leaders and organizations helped supporters to cultivate favorable media coverage leading up to the case which reached a wide range of decision-makers, including the trial judge. This article is not a full accounting of those efforts. Instead, as the 2004 conventions grown near in an even more security-obsessed atmosphere, it is an attempt to identify some lessons which might be applicable now.
