Philippines: Agrarian violence claims more lives under Gloria Macapagal Arroyo Regime

Portland, 05.05.2006 16:08

Agrarian violence claimed two more lives this month. A leader of Task Force Mapalad (TFM), Rico Adeva, 39, was gunned down by three men as he and his wife Nenita were walking to their home in Barangay Dos Hermanas, Silay City, Negros Occidental on Black Saturday. He suffered seven bullet wounds - in the head, stomach, chest, and hand. Meanwhile, in Davao, the Secretary General of the National Coordination of Autonomous Local Rural People's Organizations (UNORKA), Eric Cabanit, was assassinated by two masked men while he was in a public market in Panabo last April 24, 2006. His daughter, who was with him when the shooting happened, was also wounded and is still in critical condition.

The killing of Adeva and Cabanit are clearly agrarian reform-related. Indeed, we expect more cases of violence because CARP is already in its last - and arguably most difficult - stretch. The government has already distributed non-controversial public and private lands, while controversial and large haciendas remain untouched. Big land owners have cultivated a sense of impunity hardened by the government's coddling of landed interests, private armies, and the lack of political will to redistribute lands.

Oklahoma State University students organize protest:

Oklahoma, 05.05.2006 16:08

Bring together individuals from across the state and political spectrum news Stillwater, OK -- Oklahoma State University students are organizing a protest on May 6 during the President George W. Bush commencement in Stillwater, OK. The event will run from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the southwest corner of Hester Street and Athletic Avenue.Student organizers Holly Licht and John McLaughlin have united support for the protest from students, Stillwater residents, and individuals around the state concerned with issues ranging from the Bush administration's abuse of executive power and violations of civil rights to the American military presence in Iraq and the increasing cost of higher education. Licht is a political science Junior and outgoing president of the OSU Young Democrats. “We are using the opportunity of Pres. Bush being here to show his administration that there are a lot of people, even in Oklahoma, who are very unhappy with its policies.” Licht said. McLaughlin wants to thank the administration at OSU. “We are very happy with the support from our administration and the fact that they want to work with us to assert our first amendment rights, despite the shadow of the Patriot Act,” he said Demonstrators will include people from across the political spectrum, including Jenna Holt, a member of the College Republicans at Southern Nazarene University, in Bethany, Ok. “I am protesting, as a Republican, as an exercise in political activism,” Holt said. “I feel this protest has been well organized and will be a great learning experience." “I am protesting because I think it is important to hold our leaders, particularly our President, accountable for their words,” Holt went on to say. “For the sake of my party, I hate to see that word and our credibility broken.” For more information, visit the Oklahomans for Democracy homepage at www.oklahomansfordemocracy.org.

Eskalation in Atenco - EZLN erklärt Alarmstufe Rot!

Switzerland, 05.05.2006 14:07

Linux-Terminal-Server-Projekt (LTSP) in Kamerun

Switzerland, 05.05.2006 12:07

Homophobic Police Assault In Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz, CA, 05.05.2006 05:38

Eyewitness account of the assault and false arrest carried out against Shane (Tammy) Maxfield by Santa Cruz Police Officer Brierly.

I am a witness in the case of Shane (Tammy) Maxfield, case #065-04163. Shane was handcuffed and forced to sit down against the chainlink fence on Pacific Ave/Church for "directing traffic." He was actually helping a friend and another witness, David Bliss jump David's battery to move his van out of the handicapped space.

The officer refused to give me his name and badge number. I begged him twice not to arrest Shane as he is severely ill with AIDS and has just started a dibilitating HIV cocktail of Trevada and Sustiva. He laughed at me and said "That's not gonna happen." I told him Shane might die of stress in jail and he guffawed and shrugged me off.

It was apparent the officer realized he hadn't charged Shane with anything yet as he pulled Shane up by his coat, slammed him against the fence and forced the top of Shane's head to barely touch him. He said: "Now I've got you for battery." This was in full public view of at least 40 witnesses at 1:00pm on April 25th, 2006. Before the sergeant could take stories from witnesses Shane was put in the police car and taken to jail. His arraignment is May 15th, 2006. The jail personnel were sympathetic and thought the whole incident ridiculous. Read more, including a letter sent to City Council

Zapatistas vs Walmart!

Portland, 04.05.2006 23:38

The fight against the environmental and social destruction promoted by Walmart is not just in the United States! The events of this week, a violent police crackdown on peaceful demonstrators in the heart of the country, have electrified people throughout Mexico. A Zapatista solidarity call for the people of Texcoco and San Salvador Atenco should resonate loudly with the people of Portland.

Family Fun Day = No Peace Groups

Bristol, 04.05.2006 23:38

Plymouth CND banned from taking part in Plymouth Lord Mayor's Day Mark Scantlebury writes: Plymouth CND have been banned from taking part in Plymouth Lord Mayor's Day, while DML (part of the US military contractor Halliburton , DML maintains warships and nuclear submarines and who own the dockyard) and the Navy have taken part before and will almost certainly do so this year....Our Secretary, Shirley Law, had previously been told in a telephone conversation that those groups which delivered the relevant paperwork on time (Plymouth CND had done so) would have no difficulty in being accepted as taking part in the Parade and, presumably, other events. Ms Law then received a letter from the City Council’s Marketing and Events Officer, "This might be disappointing news but, with reference to your application to be part of Lord Mayor’s Day, I have taken advice from other parties and it is felt that this is not an appropriate event for the Plymouth CND. Lord Mayor’s Day is a non-political and family fun day; therefore we have to decline your entry." Plymouth CND would be interested to know who these 'other parties' were when this decision was made. Plymouth CND would also be interested to know whether DML and/or the Royal Navy, both of which have taken part in previous events, will be allowed to take part while Plymouth CND are apparently banned from any involvement. John Kenneth Galbraith dead at 97

Portland, 04.05.2006 19:40

Liberal economist and activist, John Kenneth Galbraith, died Saturday night in Boston at the age of 97. The liberal PhD in Economics and author of more than a dozen books on sociology, economics, and relevant history has his obituary from the Associated Press listed below. However, the story does not fully pay tribute to his liberal credentials in life, so I've taken some time to pay respects and hopefully inspire Indymedia readers who are unfamiliar with his work to read some of his books.

Galbraith's legacy as one of the intellectuals behind the scenes of many New Deal programs and as a highly influential champion for the rights of the lower classes in society should be an inspiration to progressives everywhere.

May Day on Merseyside

United Kingdom, 04.05.2006 17:39

The long weekend beginning 29th April was a very active one for Merseyside activists. On the Saturday, a number of different groups gathered in Liverpool city centre and set out various stalls in an attempt to 'Make Our Streets Political'. Sunday evening saw Liverpool Social Forum host the first 'Free Screen' film night. And of course Monday was May Day itself, when hundreds made their way to Princes Park in Toxteth for a rally and family fun day.

David Zeiger – Interview with SIR, NO SIR Producer

Santa Cruz, CA, 04.05.2006 09:38

David Zeiger’s SIR, NO SIR is undeniably a gripping story about the suppressed and extensive GI rebellion during the Viet Nam war. In an era where home made and commercial video documentaries abound, this production is also an opportunity to learn the craft of making an exceptional documentary film.

There are reasons Zeiger’s 85 minute film embraced the Del Mar audience of 450 viewers into a state breath-holding silence and surprise eruptions of passionate emotion – amazement, laughter and tears. A powerful story is exquisitely enhanced by an exceptional mix of extensive research, technical and aesthetic excellence, and attention to the minutia of editing that propels suspense and drama.

The availability of recording and editing technology has generated a gush of well- intentioned ideological documentaries that lack potency and are, unfortunately, boring. Talking heads, difficult-to-read archive stills and repetitive clips of marches and raised fists – enough already. It’s time to take the leap and struggle with the craft. Read more

Update on Santa Cruz Police Spying

Santa Cruz, CA, 04.05.2006 09:09

Let's see, where are we? You already know the SCPD was caught spying on the New Years parade planning meetings in private homes for three months late last year. And if you were following it, you know the city council reversed their previous position in late May and agreed to work with the ACLU to limit police power and create a policy that protected peoples' first amendment rights. We even went so far as to provide a draft policy for Santa Cruz based on the first amendment policy of the San Francisco PD.

That's where we left it almost a month ago, trusting that the city council and city managers would make good faith attempts to put a strong policy together with the help of the Northern California ACLU. So what has happened behind the scenes so far? Not a thing. The first meeting with the ACLU was postponed and rescheduled by the city. Then the second meeting was again canceled by the city. In the meantime, the SCPD is still free to infiltrate community and political groups. Read more
