El Pueblo Unido... A historic May Day in Chicago

Chicago, 06.05.2006 23:09

On May Day 2006, International Workers Day -over 1.5 million immigrants and their allies poured into the streets in over 200 cities and towns across the country to demand full legalization and dignity for undocumented immigrant workers. Many, responding to the national call for "Un dia sin immigrante" - "a day without immigrants" skipped work and school, closed factories and shops to attend the marches and rallies, which national organizers hope herald the emergence of the biggest multi-national civil rights/social movement ever seen in U.S. history. [US-IMC May Day 2006 coverage | Democracy Now!

In Chicago, Monday's May Day march reached truly historic proportions - dwarfing the originial 1886 march for the eight hour day. Crowd estimates varied, with Chicago police and corporate press accounts estimating the march at over 400,000. But March 10th Movement organizers and activists asserted that the day's turnout topped out well over 700,000 participants. While marchers from Chicago's Latino/a immigrant comunities clearly comprised a majority, the march also included large contingents from the city's Irish, Polish, Ukrainian, Indian, Pakistani, Haitian and Arab communities, along with union and neighborhood groups, churches, mosques, civil rights and social justice organizations. Feeder marches from various parts of the city converged in Union Park, spilling out into the surrounding streets. Marching down Randolph St, past Chicago's historic Haymarket Square enroute to an afternoon rally in Grant Park, the crowd erupted into chants of "Sí se puede" (Yes we can!) and "El pueblo unido jamás sera vencido" (The people united will never be defeated). Protest held yesterday at Mexican Consulate

San Diego, 06.05.2006 20:08

20 adherents of la otra campaña protested yesterday at the Mexican consulate in dowtown sandiego to support vendors in Texcoco.

The protest began yesterday at 3PM with at least 20 adherents of the EZLN's la otra campaña in front of the Mexican consulate located at India St. and Cedar in downtown San Diego. The protesters arrived to show support and solidarity for a group of flower producers in the town of Atenco, who have been subjected to repeated intimidation, injury, and murder, after trying to continue operating in a marketplace that has been sold to become a Wal-Mart. The EZLN issued a red alert calling on all supporters to take action and let the Mexican government know the we support the workers. According to the san diego indymedia article, PROTEST AT THE MEXICAN CONSULATE, San Diego (see http://sandiego.indymedia.org/en/2006/05/115596.shtml ) "The leadership of the Atenco movement has been brutally beaten and incarcerated along with hundreds of their supporters, several have been killed."

Mexican Repression Sparks Boston Solidarity Demonstration

Boston, 06.05.2006 14:09

Roughly 20 demonstrators gathered at the General Consulate of Mexican in Boston today at 4:00pm. They were protesting the recent wave of repression by the Mexican government against residents of Texcoco and Oaxaca. Chanting slogans such as “they killed that young boy in the street,” followed by “and said it met his human needs,” protesters marched in solidarity with the people of Texcoco, which is located near Mexico City. Mexican riot police have directed a brutal campaign of dislocation and eviction against residents there that left one fourteen year old boy dead. As a result, the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) suspended “The Other Campaign” and called for worldwide actions to support the victims of Mexican state brutalization.

Hate Monger

Portland, 06.05.2006 07:39

This comic introduced a new villian, the Hate Monger (who is still employed by publisher Marvel Comics, BTW). Note the KKK type hood the Hate Monger wears. Not subtle, but this was actually a pretty brave thing to do in 1963.

Two things are of particular note:

1) In the first panel, the Hate Monger says that you are either "with" him or "against" him. This predates a certain speech by George W. Bush by about 38 years.

2) Note how easily the Hate Monger incites the crowd against the foriegners.

Chevys Fresh Mex Workers Fired for Marching on May 1st

San Francisco Bay Area, 06.05.2006 07:08

The Chevys Fresh Mex in Tracy, CA terminated eight employees because of their absence from work on Monday, May 1st. The kitchen crew had handed a signed petition to the employer to indicate their desire to support the May 1st march for immigrant rights. Four additional employees have walked out of their jobs in solidarity with their fired coworkers, after their protest of the termination measure was ignored.

Get Activist - One guy's tale, "One Man Parade"

Portland, 06.05.2006 06:39

About 3 weeks ago, I decided that I'd had enough!! I have grown tired of feeling voiceless in the face of the GOP scandals surfacing weekly, the threat of nuclear war with Iran looming, the undermining of the integrity of our elections, our government's moral bankruptcy on the various human rights issues facing the world, and the utter dismantling of the civil rights guaranteed to Americans through the Constitution. I felt the need to try to stimulate more political consciousness, and more ACTION, among fellow progressives, and even conservatives, who believe that NOW is the time to ACT.

I decided to carry a sign wherever I go in Portland, essentially becoming, as one passerby dubbed me, a "one man parade." My aim is to try to make people think... "Wow, if this guy is so committed and so passionate that the Bush Administration (hereafter BushCo) is destroying the USA, he is carrying a sign and waving a peace sign on the way to and from work, maybe I should be doing more, or at least something... because I, too, am disgusted with the stuff that is happening to this country, under the leadership of a cadre that doesn't believe in Government!"

Schumacher Furs protest report (Too Legit to Quit), April 29

Portland, 06.05.2006 06:38

About 30 people and their dogs showed up at Schumacher Furs throughout the day Saturday to protest the fur industry's cruel treatment of animals. We stood together in the cold and pouring rain holding signs, passing out literature, chanting, and enjoying vegan food (doughnuts donated by Voodoo doughnuts, sandwiches, and cupcakes). A bagpipe player, and a boombox periodically playing "Too Legit to Quit" kept us entertained.

The "50% Off Everything Protest Sale (During Protest Only)" signs have reappeared in the windows. In typical low-rent Schumacher fashion, one sign had fallen and remained part-way down all day. Back to his old ways, Schumacher employee/attempted murderer Nick came out with a camera and pointedly took our pictures during the protest. I guess we're lucky that his "weapon of choice" for now is a camera and not a knife (Nick was previously sentenced to 70 months for attacking a woman with a knife) http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2006/04/338370.shtml More bathrobe-looking garments could be seen in the windows, one sporting unfashionably huge collar and cuffs. The only creatures this fur looked beautiful on were its original owners.

State Refuses to Allow DNA Test Before Execution

Tennessee, 05.05.2006 21:10

Untested DNA Evidence Pivotal as Sedley Alley Faces Lethal Injection Nashville: The state of Tennessee is scheduled to execute Sedley Alley on May 17th, despite serious questions about the reliability of his conviction and the availability of DNA testing which could put all doubt to rest. The state has refused to release evidence for DNA testing. Alley was convicted of the 1985 murder and abduction of Suzanne Marie Collins. At the time of Alley’s initial trial, DNA testing was not available. However, the state currently possesses a number of articles of clothing both from Ms. Collins and her abductor, which could be subjected to DNA testing to establish with certainty whether or not Sedley Alley killed Suzanne Collins. The testing can be done at no cost to the state and without any delay in the execution, should the DNA match Alley’s.

Bristol Local Elections - winners, losers and don't carers!

Bristol, 05.05.2006 19:08

Hung Council: Local Elections: Thursday 4th May 2006 . With election results for Bristol in, Election Watch claims a Lib-Dem 'Belly Flop': Promised Liberal Democrat gains in the local elections have failed to materialise. Bristolians tonight gave Janke's regime a massive thumbs down as the Lib Dems limped home with just a 27% share of the vote. The ailing Labour Party also got a 27% share and the Tories are the big winners on the night with over 30% of Bristolians opting for them. Good news for the Greens too who finally delivered Bristol's first Green councillor in Southville by just seven votes. Sacked Rolls Royce worker Jerry Hicks flying under The Respect banner also managed to beat Labour and take second place to the Lib Dems in Lockleaze. Full article anarchist606 sees it as 'Labour Hurt, Greens Gain'. : Still, voting is not enough (by a long, long way) for the work that needs doing in regard global warming, peak oil and the like. But when times are bleak (Iraqi police 'killed 14-year-old boy for being homosexual', Global warming driving polar bears to extinction) you've got to take the good news where you can get it!Full articleLib Dem election belly flop | Labour Hurt, Greens Gain |

A comment on Nepal

Portland, 05.05.2006 16:08

This was my response to the expert. In a lot of ways I agree with his basic premise. However, I have very strong opinions that differ from what he is saying.

Bhai means brother. Bahini means sister. "There is absolutely no basis to suspect and fear that we will impose one-party dictatorship once we assume power in Kathmandu. And this is a fundamental principle for their politics in the future too:" This is laughable and hilarious. First of all, you arbitrarily, as party, make descions that do not reflect the will of many of the common people. You say that you will cease fire and then you don't.

There are a lot of basic economic solutions for making Nepal a strong economically viable country. The problem that I see in Nepal are a bunch of feudal tribal interests being unaddressed in a constructive economic manner. The maoists are part and parcel of this. Because of the maoist war in the country thousands have had to flee to Kathmandu in order to make a living. This counter productive. I think that it would help if Nepal was the first Green Country who ran all of its services green and imposed huge tarrifs on tourist organizations. Nepal is a farming country that should make hemp products and should increase global demand for these products and energy systems.

The problem in Nepal is not political. The problem in Nepal is economic. The problem in Nepal are groups like the BBC and foreign intrests that have not paid to local governments ie Tengboche etc. If you were to say, Bhai, I would like you to run things, then I would also say that the villages were usually already communalistic. What communism do you want to bring to already communilistic villages? Rhetoric. Plain and simple. What Nepal needs is to legalize abortion, and family planning services and keep, Bhai, the gangsters from stealing and divvying up the resources that are supposed to go to the women.
