Leeds, City of Asylum Shame

United Kingdom, 18.05.2006 01:10

Leeds No Borders, a group of campaigners working to support refugees, asylum seekers and migrants in Leeds, including those who are detained and destitute, conducted an 'alternative' guided tour of the city on Saturday 6 May entitled 'Leeds, City of Asylum Shame'. The purpose of the tour was to educate local people about key Leeds institutions involved in the appalling treatment, destitution, detention and deportation of asylum seekers and to dispel the myths pedalled in the media about housing, employment and other issues.

South Central Farm Still in Jeopardy

United States, 17.05.2006 14:37

LOS ANGELES - May 14, 2006 – Less than two weeks remain on a contract option between the Trust For Public Land, (TPL) and the developer who wants to destroy the farm. The contract grants TPL the right to purchase the property and preserve the farm. One of the terms of the contract states that the local community must raise 1 million dollars towards the purchase of the land. Community organizers say they are still far short of that goal. Last month the farmers lost their legal challenge to the evictions in court. So at this time the contract option is all that is preventing evictions by force.

Developer Joe Shekou recently filed a frivolous lawsuit, aka SLAPP suit, against Gallinas Creek activists. The activists have been effective and vocal in stalling attempts by the developer to build a 3 acre indoor soccer complex on endangered wildlife habitat in Marin County. The wetlands of Gallinas Creek are home to the endangered clapper rail and marsh mouse.

Santa Cruz Parking Garage Paranoia Law Stalls Again

San Francisco Bay Area, 17.05.2006 13:09

On May 9th, after more than an hour of public comment and city council chatter, the “Parking Lot Panic” law was significantly amended. It now requires another vote on May 23rd to assure its final passage. Hence there is still time to educate the community as to how absurd, abusive, and unresponsive to real concerns this law is. It's not just a homeless issue, but one that radically changes how the entire community will be allowed to use their vehicles.

Young, Queer Latina Leader Comes Full Circle

San Francisco Bay Area, 17.05.2006 13:09

Mireya Gómez-Contreras of the Watsonville Brown Berets writes:
In 1998, I was one of four people to receive a Queer Youth Leadership Award for my activism around gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, questioning (queer) issues. As a young, queer Latina, I was saved from falling into the hands of drugs, violence and total depression because I became involved in my community. Queer activism specifically helped me deal with the added pressure of feeling I had to conform to a heterosexual world. My message to Santa Cruz County community members today is to step it up and really support teens, where I feel it counts a great deal to young people, through recognition.

As a young, queer Latina, I was saved from falling into the hands of drugs, violence and total depression because I became involved in my community. Queer activism specifically helped me deal with the added pressure of feeling I had to conform to a heterosexual world. Looking back, I don’t know where I would have turned had it not been for the youth group Gay And Proud, which formed in 1996 out of a Watsonville clinic, Salud Para la Gente.

This year, I find myself nominating a queer youth who, through her creative and ambitious activist work, reminds me that supporting youth is paving the best path possible for our future leaders. My message to Santa Cruz County community members today is to step it up and really support teens, where I feel it counts a great deal to young people, through recognition.

The Ninth Annual Queer Youth Leadership Awards, scheduled for May 21st at the Henry J. Mello Center in Watsonville at 4:00pm, is a project of the Santa Cruz County Task Force for LGBTIQ Youth, which is affiliated with the Diversity Center. For more information, call 831-427-4004. Read more

New Zealand imerialism in action in the Solomons

Aotearoa, 17.05.2006 05:10

Supported by the Green Party, the Labour government has rushed new troops to the Solomons to help oppress the local population. A 24-hour visit to the Solomon Islands by New Zealand Defence Minister Phil Goff on April 27 underscored the punitive and oppressive nature of the Australian-led intervention in the tiny Pacific country. In the wake of disturbances in Honiara, the capital, the New Zealand Labour government rushed a 100-strong contingent of heavily-armed military and police reinforcements to assist the Australian government in suppressing political protests and rioting. While the rioting erupted in response to the widely perceived rigging of the selection of Snyder Rini as prime minister, it reflected broader resentment over deepening social inequality and the occupation of the country by RAMSI, the so-called Regional Assistance Mission mounted by Australia and New Zealand. Since 2003, RAMSI has operated a neo-colonial administration, controlling police, prisons, the legal system, government finances and other key departments. It has propped up a corrupt local business and political elite while enforcing pro-market economic “reforms”. [Riots in the Solomons] [Solomon Islands: Howard Props Up Corrupt Regime]
