Senate Passes Comprehensive Immigration Reform

United States, 26.05.2006 16:37

On Thursday the Senate voted 67-31 to pass S. 2611, the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Bill, along with a long list of amendments, many of which contain onerous enforcement provisions that erode immigrant access to the courts and to due process of law, and place severe hardship on immigrants, and their friends, families, and employers.

One particularly harsh amendment would make English the "official language" of the United States. However, the bill contains provisions of both AGJOBS, which would allow a path to legalization to many immigrant agricultural workers, and the DREAM ACT, which would allow qualified students who were brought to the United States as undocumented immigrant children to pursue higher education in the US, and allows for the implementation of a three-year guest worker program. Most importantly, the bill opens a path to permanent legal status for many of the 12 million undocumented immigrants in the country. Now begins the difficult process of harmonizing it with the disastrous House Bill, HR 4437, the Border Protection, Antiterrorism, and Illegal Immigration Control Act of 2005.

Why do we need terrorists when we have Verizon?

Portland, 26.05.2006 10:39

Business Week has reported that the telephone companies that are trying to proclaim their innocence of not handing the Bush regime our private calling records without a warrant, subpoena, or court order may feel capable of lying because they likely hired out their felonies and treason to third-party companies.

These third-party companies are called "scapegoat" companies because they are often created in an attempt to isolate the heavily moneyed criminals and traitors from criminal prosecution and from civil lawsuits while the scapegoat company is allowed to be judically destroyed, leaving the real crooks and their corporations virtually untouched and unpunished.

Stop The "Divine Strake" at the Nevada Test Site

San Francisco Bay Area, 26.05.2006 02:38

Divine Strake is the government’s latest venture into the realm of broken treaties, state-sponsored terror and the desecration of Mother Earth - a “bunker-busting” bomb that will be detonated this June in the Nevada desert. The Shundahai Network, founded by Shoshone Elder Corbin Harney, says “this test could be a precursor” to a nuclear strike against Iran, “with massive civilian casualties.” May 28th has been declated an International Day of Action and dozens of indigenous, environmental justice and peace and disarmament organizations will converge at the Peace Camp outside the Nevada Test Site near Mercury, Nevada to protest the Divine Strake test scheduled for June 2nd, but now apparently postponed to June 23rd.

New charges vindicate Louise Nicholas

Aotearoa, 26.05.2006 01:10

Assistant Police Commissioner Clint Rickards and former cops Bob Schollum and Brad Shipton are all heading back to court again on more rape charges. Last month the three were acquitted by a jury of raping Louise Nicholas. “We believe that the further charges vindicate Louise Nicholas. We believe that these men systematically abused their power, and raped many women, and this further set of charges demonstrates that what they did to Louise Nicholas was not an isolated case” said Grace Millar of 'Women Against Rape'. The women handed out leaflets with suppressed information about the cops in the streets of Wellington but stopped when they found out that distributing the leaflets could inflict on this up-coming trial. [ Media Release ] Indymedia activists were aware of this too and it is for this reason that collective members were opposed to publishing the suppressed information on indymedia.org.nz. Feature 4th April 06 In Christchurch, two members of the group involved in a rally in support of Louise Nicholas have been approached by police concerning the leaflets which contained suppressed information about the case and were handed out during the protest. The officers stated that the police are going to be laying charges in relation to the dissemination of the suppressed material. “At the moment the legal system is heavily biased against rape survivors and the verdict in this case will only further deter women from taking future prosecutions, especially against men in positions of authority such as police offices,” said Frances Martin. The two activists are planning to defend themselves in court and are looking at being involved in further actions in support of Louise. United States, 25.05.2006 23:37

Divine Strake is the government’s latest venture into the realm of broken treaties, state-sponsored terror and the desecration of Mother Earth - a “bunker-busting” bomb that will be detonated this June in the Nevada desert. The Shundahai Network, founded by Shoshone Elder Corbin Harney, says “this test could be a precursor” to a nuclear strike against Iran, “with massive civilian casualties.” Read more

The Divine Strake Test, a test sponsored by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), is a detonation of a 700 ton buried heavy ammonium nitrate/fuel oil charge above a tunnel structure. The DTRA reports that the main purpose of the test is to study ground shock effects on deeply buried tunnel structures. Environmental activists and analysists predict, however, that the test is a preparation for the development of new nuclear weapons.

There are two actions against the 700 ton "Divine Strake" bomb coming up. This affects all of us, but especially the Shoshone People downwind of the Nevada Test Site. Oral arguments will be heard on May 25th and 26th, beginning at 11:00am at the Nevada District Court in Reno, Nevada.

An International Day of Action is planned at the test site on May 28th.

UC Regents Encounter Strong Resistance on Pension Cuts and Nukes

San Francisco Bay Area, 25.05.2006 15:38

On May 17th, students, workers and unions were at the UC Regents meeting held at UC San Francisco, primarily in response to University of California's plan to cut workers' pensions. The unions were united and unapologetic, cheering loudly as three California State Senators, including Figeroa (D) and Maldonado (R), called for President Dynes' resignation. For the second straight year, anti-nuke/demilitarization activists from around the state disrupted the second day of the UC Regents meeting at UCSF on May 18th. In addition to concerns of corruption on behalf of top UC officials, students continued the decades old tradition of opposition to UC's vital role in the production of weapons of mass destruction.

Mercadona: long and worthy strike, here and now.

Saturday 20/5 :: Day of struggle against Mercadona in all the state

It's been two months since workers of Mercadona's logistic center in Sant Sadurní started an indefinite strike [45 days, 50 days]. Death threats, dismissals, scabs brought from other centers and harassment to a staff where almost 100% of workers are migrants hired for the company in their country of origin. This practice is widespread to other companies such as Inditex and el Corte Inglés.
The pressure of the company is not enough, so the Government collaborates with it banning all demonstrations workers had called for all May.
Apart from the demonstrations, gatherings [1 + 2] and the boycott against the company, the fiscalia (office of the public prosecutor) studies the likely criminal behaviour of Mercadona. The date for this trial is set to next 22th May.
Solidarity has also been shown from sabotage.

Action at the Port Of Olympia Today

Portland, 25.05.2006 00:38

In protest of the illegal war in Iraq and the militarization of the Olympia Port, community members came together to take a stand. The day started out with a group of around 30 holding signs on the corners of State and Plum/East Bay. After 12 noon, much of the group moved closer to the entrance of the port. A group of 10 formed a blockade to stop one of the convoys around 1:30. Eight people were arrested after stopping the convoy for about 30 minutes.

A second group set up another blockade in front of the port entrance to block a convoy of strikers that had taken another route. Police brutally grabbed protesters trying to break them up. After a struggle the protesters were moved to the side and the convoy was let through.

Police said that the rest of the convoys for today were cancelled, but there is no way to be certain of this. Attempts to talk with soldiers about the war largely failed as the soldiers mostly refused to speak with the protesters.

Popular uprising against high-speed train (TAV) in Italy

Portland, 25.05.2006 00:38

With the Turin Winter Olympics and the Italian elections over, repression of the "NO TAV" movement has begun and pressure will be on to begin work on the Turin-Lyon (France)link of the Italian high-speed train network (TAV). Massive protests late last year finally forced the issue into national attention, and now eight subpoenas have been handed down from those protests. But the opposition is ready to continue their 15-year struggle.

This article was written before the subpoenas came down three weeks ago. The first appearances before the magistrate will be happening soon. One of those requested to appear is Beppe Joannas, mayor of Bussoleno, one of the more outspoken of the 38 or so Susa Valley mayors, who all oppose the project. It is unclear at this point what eventual charges may be filed. Also only slightly covered in the article is what effect the narrow election of Romano Prodi's "center-left" coalition will have on the TAV issue. Prodi was involved in the early stages of the TAV network's development, supported it while President of the European Commission, and still supports it. But some key members of his coalition, like Fausto Bertinotti of Rifondazione Comunista, who was elected as President of the House of Deputies (3rd highest position in the government) has opposed it. To learn more about the issue, read on....

The Enemy Within

Portland, 25.05.2006 00:38

Today, Mayor Potter publically revealed (and condemned) an effort by the FBI to place an informant within the walls of City Hall. A lesser man might have been tempted to let the matter drop lest, in hearing the news, his constituents might suspect that he "had something to hide," a phrase often heard these days. But Mayor Potter is not a man easily cowed into the corner. Thankfully, he's moved to bring Big Brother out of the closet. In an open letter to the people, he spoke out not only against this personal intrustion, but against the whole web of warrantless, lawless government spying so nakedly revealed to us recently.

I've had FBI agents knocking on the doors of friends of mine, and even dragging some of them away in the night. I've had them haunting my own nightmares. Probably, since I am a media activist, I've even had them listening to my telephone conversations and reading my mail. So I am well aware that we are not in Kansas anymore, as the saying goes. Still, somehow it shocks me to learn that they have been so blatantly skulking around in, of all places, City Hall. [ read more ]

Potter's Letter

On Thursday, May 11, 2006, a Special Agent of the Portland Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation stopped a City employee and showed her a badge and ID. He asked if she knew any City Council members. He asked if she would be willing to pass information to him relating to people who work for the City of Portland . He said that while he had duties in other areas, the agency was always interested in information relating to white collar crime and other things.

One important and legitimate role of the FBI is to investigate public corruption within government entities. For example, recently the FBI arrested a member of Congress for public corruption. But federal officials have told me they know of no public corruption in our city. Federal officials say they are conducting no investigation of the City of Portland.

The only conclusion I can draw is that the agent in question was trying to place an informant inside the offices of Portland 's elected officials and employees, in order to inform on City Council and others. [ read more ]

South Central Farm Issues Red Alert

San Francisco Bay Area, 25.05.2006 00:09

The South Central Community Farm in Los Angeles has been under consistent attack from the City of LA since the beginning of March. The farm, spanning 14 blocks, is believed to be one of the largest urban community gardens in the United States. On Wednesday, May 24th, the court issued a ruling paving the way for the sheriff to evict the farmers. Farmers and supporters have called for an encampment and defense of the farm by issuing a Red Alert. Supporters are travelling from Northern California and other parts of the country to join the encampment, and folk singer Joan Baez and tree-sitting celebrities Julia Butterfly Hill and John Quigley have started a tree-sit in the oldest tree on the farm.
