June 9th Rally to Demand Freedom for Mumia

San Francisco Bay Area, 08.06.2006 14:41

There will be a June 9th press conference and rally for Mumia Abu-Jamal from 4-6pm at the Federal Building in San Francisco. The rally is part of an international effort to win new support for Mumia's appeal and to counter the efforts to execute him. The State of Pennsylvania recently filed an appeal seeking to reinstate the order to execute Mumia. Governor Ed Rendell has said that if the appeal is upheld by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, he will sign the third warrant for Mumia's execution. Barring the unlikely intervention of the U.S. Supreme Court, Mumia will have 90 days to live.

Students and Workers Rally to Demand Affirmative Diversity

San Francisco Bay Area, 08.06.2006 14:41

On June 6th, outraged communities of color at UC Santa Cruz held multiple rallies and confronted Chancellor Denton to demand concrete infrastructural support for diversity at UCSC. While the University has made a rhetorical commitment to diversity, custodians continue to receive up to 30% less in wages than their counterparts at local colleges; the University has actively denied institutional support and failed to recognize the centrality of student initiated outreach and retention programs to making diversity viable at UCSC; and, large numbers of valuable senior faculty of color have been forced to resign due to hostile working environments.

Halliburton Protest Continues

Oklahoma, 08.06.2006 14:40

In the Duncan Court system report one of the 16 arrested goes to court to Contest the Charge of Permit Violation from the May 17th Halliburton Demo.Non-violent Direct Action Protester to Stand Up for First Amendment Rights DUNCAN- Sixteen people from all over the Heartland attempted a citizens’ arrest of David Lesar at the Halliburton Shareholders’ meeting in Duncan Oklahoma. Hiram Myers, an attorney with a nephew deployed in Iraq, who felt compelled by his conscience to prepare a legal document outlining Halliburton’s violations, led them. Among those who joined Myers in leaving the protest pen, which fell under the weight of banners, signs, and chants of "This is What Democracy Looks Like!" was Tulsa Peace Fellowship member Joni LeViness. Aware of the risk, she maintains that her acts are part of a proud tradition of non-violent direct action that she hopes will impact the community in an immediate and powerful way. She feels so passionately that she has chosen to appear in court with anticipated charges of ‘Permit Violation’ to enter a plea of ‘Not Guilty’ "There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can’t take part;" LeViness shares citing a quote of unknown origin, "you can’t even passively take part, and you’ve got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you’ve got to make it stop. And you’ve got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you’re free, the machine will be prevented from working at all!" Halliburton is currently under investigations by the Security Exchange Commission, Department of Justice and the Pentagon for bribery, fraud and overcharging no-bid military contracts. Additionally, Halliburton also has business dealings in Iran, which are contrary to the U.S. sanctions currently being imposed. It is widely believed that Halliburton moved their shareholders’ meeting to Duncan, Oklahoma from Houston, Texas where their meetings in past years have been the target of intense scrutiny, protests, and civil disobedience. Their move appears to have strengthened the resolve of corporate accountability advocates, veterans, and concerned citizens. They want the world to know of the violence and injustice suffered by Colombia's poor majority, especially black and indigenous peoples, of their resistance and of their determination to achieve social justice and protect the natural environment. More InfoPlan Colombia was originally conceived during the Clinton administration, in co-ordination with the then President of Colombia, Pastrana. It has since been carried forward by their neo-con replacements, Bush and Uribe. Superficially, Plan Colombia has been prosecuted under the pretext of a 'War On Drugs'. Ashton Court festival stolen from the community of Bristol 50% Ticket Price Increase This Year - 22nd & 23rd July Updated (5th June) - Considering the strength of opinion given in the comments section in response to the below article, if you haven't done so already, you may wish to register your views directly on the Ashton Court Festival website. Feedback Form. You should know that providing an email is the only requirement of filling out the online form, which you may also object to. If so, give a false one.Bristol Born writes: Our once proud and free, community festival has been stolen and is being sold back to us at over inflated prices. What was once Europe's largest free festival, The Bristol Community Festival at Ashton Court has been stolen, privatised and now rebranded as the Orange(tm) Ashton Court Festival. After the theft of our free festival came the fences and 4x4's full of private security thugs designed to extract and maximise the profit from the event...This year ticket prices have increased by 50%, up from £6 per day to £9 and access to a new exclusive VIP area will cost £75. Bristol doesn't do 'exclusive VIP' ... I'd like to suggest an 'unofficial' community festival to take place this year on the outside of the separation barrier with accoustic musicians, community arts volunteers, jugglers, fireshows, face painting, food and drink to share and non-corporate good fun all round. How about it? Anti-Repression Demo, London 10th June 7:30PM Demonstration Against Repression. Saturday 10th June, 7:30pm. Meet outside Bank Tube Station, on the corner of Princes Street and Threadneedle Street, London. non writes: In the last few weeks and months there has been a dramatic increase of state repression of social movements. From everywhere on earth we are hearing stories of beatings, imprisonment, torture, sexual abuse, raids, arrests and other violence against those who resist political, social and economic domination of their lives and destruction of their planet. From environmental activists in the USA, adherents of the 'Other Campaign' in Mexico and student protesters in occupied West Papua, to migrants and peace activists in the UK, gay and lesbian activists in Russia and anarchists all across Europe, everywhere on earth there are examples of this. Full ArticleBRISTOL CONTEXT - MH writes: The Easton Cowgirls & Boys recently returned from a solidarity trip to Mexico where they took part in solidarity sports events and social activities. A few of the party are still there, whilst of course events in mexico are moving on fast with both repression & resistance. Kiptik, the Bristol based solidarity group recently hosted a film night at the Cube highlighting these events. Other Bristolians also recently took part in a protest at the mexican consulate in London ... Bristol's peace campaigners are subject to the new laws introducing military bases as 'designated areas', which increases dramtically the likelihood of any protesters breaching the perimters of bases of going to prison. And of course, charges were recently dropped against Bristol's last (known) G8 defendant, where the location of the G8 summit itself was a very large 'designated area'. Full Comment. The Tescopoly Threat to Gloucester Road - Updated

Bristol, 08.06.2006 14:40

One of Britains' last few surviving 'thriving streets' threatened with another supermarket! Tesco made £70 profit every second last year Updated (6th June) -'Tesco reported pre-tax profits of more than £2bn. Even though each employee generates an average of £95,000 worth of sales each year, no spare cash is left to pay workers during their tea breaks. Whilst the eight men who run Tesco earned £26m between them last year (2005 figures), Tesco have fought tooth and nail against the minimum wage. A 16 year old worker on such a rate would have to work for over 90 years to earn Sir Terry’s £3m annual salary ... Luckily for Tesco, competition laws classify convenience stores as a separate sector to supermarkets. Monopolies (includes 2006 figures) used to be recognised and prevented when a company controlled 25% of the market, but with their Metro stores, Tesco controls over one third of the country’s grocery business.' (Image right; Tree-top protests against new Tesco development at Shepton Mallet, March 2006)Gloucester Road resident writes: On a site tucked behind the existing Somerfield there are plans for a new "food store for Bishopston", as the PR company who is promoting the development call it. The food store is in fact a planned Tescos with 180 car parking spaces. In additon the the recently opened Tesco express and Sainsburys local a little further down the road, the new supermarket would inevitably put great pressure on local food stores and other businesses that have served the local community so well for many years (not to mention the increased traffic congestion!).

Native Youth Organize Run to Klamath Dam for Klamath Salmon

United States, 08.06.2006 14:38

Power to the Fish people.

This weekend Hoopa Native youth and supporters ran over 214 miles from the mouth of the Klamath to the Klamath dams to honor Klamath River Salmon and to demand dam removal. This run ended with a rally to Bring the Salmon Home to the Uppper Klamath Basin in front of Iron Gate Dam. Members of the four Klamath Tribes spoke, sang songs, and told stories of past salmon runs in front of the dam, which blocks hundreds of miles of the Klamath River to salmon. Due to the lack of salmon, over one hundred people had to share one Spring Chinook at the dam.

The Great Salmon Reley started four years ago after the Klamath fish kill, which killed over 64,000 Klamath Salmon due to low flows. This run has been organized by a handful of Hoopa teenagers for years, two of which won the David Bower award for thier efforts. These girls also created a movie about the Klamath Fish killl called Two Rivers, which has been shown in Portland several times.

UN-DAMMIT This years run was part of a monumental movement in the Klamath to remove four large dams through a FERC process which occurs every 50 years. These dams block hundreds of miles of habitat and create warm water and toxic alga. Pacific Power of Portland Oregon owns these dams. If removed, three out of four of the dams would be the largest dams removed ever.

Olympia Port Militarization Resistance Wrap-up

United States, 08.06.2006 14:38

Protesters worked to bring attention to the militarization of the Port of Olympia from Monday the 22nd until Wednesday the 1st of June. The protesters made a call to action in Olympia and 37 were arrested during the events. The height of the protest happened on May 30th when protesters took direct action against the port and tore off the fence at the entrance.

On that day, protesters outside of the port were at a stand off with the police. The police violence had become too much for those protesting the militarization of the Port of Olympia and U.S. imperialism. Rounds of pepper bullets, tazers, billy clubs, steal toe boots, and unwarned multiple fogs of pepper spray were just some of the tactics used in the attempt at squashing the demonstrators who had been at work since Monday of last week.

43+ worldwide events for Weekend of Resistance Against the Green Scare!

United States, 08.06.2006 14:38

The list of events continues to grow, but now stands at over 43 events planned worldwide for the International Weekend of Resistance Against the Green Scare June 9 - 11, 2006.

December 7, 2005, marked the beginning of the largest roundup of environmental and animal rights activists in U.S. history. There have now been nearly 20 arrests and many Grand Jury subpoenas. The nation-wide sweep of arrests, dubbed "Operation Backfire," has been described by the FBI as a major hit to environmentalists and animal rights activists who engage in destruction of property as a means to defend wild lands and lives of animals. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales stated in January that, "Investigating and preventing animal rights and environmental extremism is one of the FBI's highest domestic priorities".

Two other protesters from Vermont School of the Americas Watch were arrested as they attempted to gain entrance to the auditorium.
