The South Central Farm is under siege. If you live in LA or anywhere near there please make your way to the farm to keep the protesters and farmers safe. It is still unconfirmed but there are also reports that a protester was carried out on a stretche. Bulldozer positioned nearby have began breaking through the fences.

United States, 13.06.2006 18:37

Sherrifs evicting farmers 5:20 a.m. The sherrifs are at the farm. The eviction process is starting now. Farmers are calling all activists to converge to the farm for a massive protest (Alameda & 41st Street). The eviction might take up to 3 to 4 hours or longer.

9:00 a.m. Jake writes: 1) The sheriffs had already broken open the lockboxes that people were using to lock themselves down to prevent their removal from the farm.

2) About 10 people had been dragged out, and two people were sent away in ambulances. We don't know what happened to them or how they are doing.

3) Bulldozers were lined up outside the fences, ready to come in.

10:15 a.m. Bulldozers are breaking down the fences, and the tree is being cut. Traffic is bottlenecked around Alameda.

10:30 a.m. Bulldozers are on the farm. Cherry pickers coming in to farm now. Daryl & John still in tree. People still locked down around tree. About 300 supporters protesting outside now.

Students and Workers Rally to Demand Affirmative Diversity

San Francisco Bay Area, 13.06.2006 18:08

On June 6th, communities of color at UC Santa Cruz held multiple rallies and confronted Chancellor Denton to demand concrete infrastructural support for diversity at UCSC. While the University has made a rhetorical commitment to diversity, custodians continue to receive up to 30% less in wages than their counterparts at local colleges; the University has actively denied institutional support and failed to recognize the centrality of student initiated outreach and retention programs to making diversity viable at UCSC; and, large numbers of valuable senior faculty of color have been forced to resign due to hostile working environments.

Paul Gallegos wins Humboldt County DA Race

San Francisco Bay Area, 13.06.2006 18:08

The District Attorney who won fame and beat an attempted recall for filing a lawsuit against timber giant Pacific Lumber in 2003 won re-election June 6, 2006. After a bitter race between Gallegos and his police-supported challenger, Worth Dikeman, Gallegos walked home with nearly 53% of the vote.

The relationship between the DA's office and law enforcement was a central issue during the campaign. Gallegos, who did not seek endorsement by law enforcement, cited rules by the American Bar Association that state "prosecutors should take care to avoid any relationships with the police that might cast doubt on the independence and integrity of the office of the prosecutor."

Dikeman's close relationship with law enforcement failed to capture voter support. Dikeman's campaign manager, Dave Parris, is an investigator for the Eureka Police Department.

Demonstranci zorganizowali sitting i spalili kukłę przedstawiającą Giertycha.

Against The Wal Weekend Wrap Up

Arkansas, 12.06.2006 22:09

Clad in haz-mat suits and weilding rolls of caution tape, more than 40 concerned citizens from across Arkansas marched on the Wal-Mart Shareholders Meeting June 2nd in Fayetteville, AR to put the retail giant under "Quarantine." Holding aloft a banner that read "Wal-Mart : Hazardous to Worker Healthcare," we called upon the shareholders streaming out of Bud Walton Arena to reform the company's harmful labor and environmental practices. Surely, the richest corporation on Earth can pay a living wage and provide healthcare to all their workers. After the meeting, our haz-mat suited "Bureau of Worker Health" took our operation downtown to Fayetteville's restaurant/bar district where we again engaged many Wal-Mart shareholders as they ate and relaxed. This was but one action of many around the nation that occured during the Walmart shareholders convention. Other actions occured at Nashville, Chicago, Cleveland, Long Island, Philly, Denver, Atlanta, San Francisco, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Rhode Island, Iowa City, Urbana, Illinois, Tulsa, Eugene, Salt Lake City, and Mountain View, CA. Sick of Halliburton? I am...yet,

Oklahoma, 12.06.2006 19:08

Halliburton Protest Continues O.k. so I don't know how to do a press release, but here's the info any way. People Before Profit! O.k. so I don't know how to do a press release, but here's the info any way. People Before Profit!    HALLIBURTON PROTEST In Duncan Municipal Court I pled Not Guilty last Wednes. May 31st. This Thurs. June 8th I'll Hopefully be "heard" in the courtroom. At 1:30 in Duncan in the Municipal Court. 714 Willow Rex Friend a lawyer from OKC will be asking me some General Questions and i'm working on my answers to be as concise and to the point as possible . First i need to adress crossing the line: Violation of Permit 1. I signed the People's Indictment as an individual, I crossed the line as an individual, I don't understand how could i be limited by a permit that i never saw? Obtained by a group OK Veterans for Peace, that i don't belong to, being that i'm not a Veteran? 2. When i knew i would be arrested, i thought that it would be a rather minor violation weighed in my head and heart of possibly preventing the greater harm which Halliburton's business practices continue to create, seemingly with little to No accountability. Hopefully this is when Rex would ask me a general question, ie perhaps, what harm is that? Harm to the Environment through Profit before Environment practices such as in Nigeria where they've been flaring gas for years. Harm to the Communities abroad where their Profit before People has devastated communities , Nigeria comes to mind again. Harm to Our Troops placed further in harms way by having to escort non vital to the security of Iraq, contractors of Halliburton such as * KBR employees , who travel there to check on Halliburton's interests and profits that have come before the health and safety of our sons and daughters serving our Govt.'s interests in the Middle East. Harm to our Nation's resources in the form of war profiteering, such as Halliburtons' KBR division's quarterly 284% increase in profit in July 2005, When audits by the Pentagon determined that KBR had 1 Billion in expenses the military considered "unreasonable" and 442 Million in "unsupported" expenses, as in No receipt or any explanation to the military to say how those expenses were disbursed. Is David Lesar or Halliburton itself held Accountable? Not by our govt. these were "let go", for all of the above. On May 17th the People themselves were trying to do what our Govt. Should do, and that's to bring some sort of accountability to a Corporation gone awry. We were not allowed to bring this to the shareholder's meeting, we were arrested. Before we'd even been allowed to go 20 feet we were met with handcuffs and then prison cells. We were each fined 89 dollars and had our mug shots taken. Held for hours in cells that i consider to be sub human enclosures. All this, while David Lesar and Halliburton were announcing an 80/20 split, Rewarding KBR division greater reign rather than even an attempt at adressing the very real concerns brought out by our own Pentaagon/Military. If it goes as i think it will, where the judge finds me guilty: if i get a chance, i'll say: The court Demands accountability from me, a private citizen exercising my First Amendment Right while still on Public Property of the Simmons Center Parking lot, the town of Duncan fined and imprisoned me for this, yet Halliburton is found to be in errors much graver to the global Ecology, Local foreign economies, placing our troops in greater harms way, All the while charging Us as Taxpayers who pay for our Nation's military, a Billion in Questionable expenses and 442 Million in Unsupported expenses, with No fines, no Accountability. I am More than willing to be held accountable for my actions, my choices and my spending (which considering it costs me at least 50 dollars in gas each time,to have come to Duncan),which i've done three times now, as well as my bail are not trivial nor easy. Yet , i would do it again to in some small way, help prevent the Greater Harm which IS Halliburton, and what our own Pentagon has determined, yet not acted upon, Immoral/Illegal practices of Halliburton and it's subcontractors, Especially KBR! Where is Their Accountability? As a Taxpayer, i want to know. As an American willing to be arrested and jailed for exercising my first amendment right and be held "accountable" by a system gone askew, i want to know, Where is the Accountability from David Lesar and Halliburton? Well there it is guys. I know it's long and i might not get half the time to say it. So i'm posting it here on Independent Media. ....and so i go.... National Lawyers Guild Condemns Operation Backfire as Unconstitutional

Portland, 12.06.2006 18:38

The National Lawyer's Guild has issued a press release making official their condemnation of the Green Scare. A hotline has been established to support activists targeted by the FBI and other government agencies.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 12, 2006:
New York. The National Lawyers Guild condemns the FBI's Operation
Backfire "green scare" tactics as an unconstitutional abuse of authority. The FBI has engaged in an orchestrated campaign of issuing subpoenas to environmental activists, conducting large scale roundups of activists, levying unprecedented penalties for property crimes, and using threats of severe sanctions to leverage fear of conviction and force individuals to turn state's evidence.

In 2004, the federal government launched Operation Backfire, a
wide-scale investigation of environmental and animal rights activists. It used paid informants and conducted warrantless spying on a range of
organizations. Since then, numerous individuals around the country have been arrested and charged with arson, destruction of property and conspiracy in the government's attempts to target the Earth Liberation Front (ELF) and the Animal Liberation Front (ALF). Others were subpoenaed to testify before grand juries. Some were charged with the use of "destructive devices," one count of which carries a mandatory 30-year sentence-two counts call for mandatory life in prison. The government is over-charging people with offenses that carry severe sanctions to force them to accept guilty pleas for a lower sentence or to intimidate them into turning state's evidence. The National Lawyers Guild believes that the government is misusing destructive device charges and engaging in selection prosecution.

Fouad Kaady Murder Solved But Unpunished

Portland, 12.06.2006 11:38

Fouad Kaady was murdered nine months ago, and his killers are still at large, and being paid by the citizens of Clackamas County. I think that they are hoping that this whole thing will just go away. PLEASE DON'T LET HIM DIE UNAVENGED!

Those familiar with the incident are still very much in shock at the gross way the Sheriff (Craig Roberts) and the District Attorney (John Foote) have failed to hold the two criminal cops responsible for gross misuse of power, reckless endangering, and yes, murder.
