Bunk and Debunking Battles

Portland, 19.06.2006 14:13

The most recent article on [9/11] published in Scientific American is a despicable piece by one of the magazine's stars, Michael Shermer. He postures proudly "debunking" our efforts for research into the World Trade Center demolition and for a more coherent version of the truth. (The event itself, the collapse of the towers seen as a demolition, seems to be almost a certainty by now.) Michael Shermer's article "debunking" that line of thought consists of 90% political sloganeering, cultural cliches, and "setting the mood" to predispose the reader with context that ridicules our explorations, and then adds 10% of pseudo-science. It's unbelievable that he is one of the leading establishment scientists of our time.

What happened at Pioneer Courthouse Square on Saturday?

Portland, 19.06.2006 14:12

My friend and I were driving on Yamhill towards Broadway when we saw cops speeding ahead of us screech to a halt past the intersection and then chase an African-American man wearing a dress across the intersection and in front of Banana Republic. The man was unarmed, and surrendering, he sat against the wall waiting for the cops to come arrest him. When they got to him, they held him down and proceeded to beat him mercilessly.

June is time to stop the Monsanto Law in California

San Francisco Bay Area, 19.06.2006 07:09

On June 28th, the California State Assembly Agriculture Committee will consider a bill (SB 1056) that would take away local government authority over seed regulation. If passed, this bill would override restrictions on genetically engineered (genetically modified, or GM) crops and seeds, as well as all other local regulation of seeds. Read more People who are concerned with food safety worry that GM foods are being rushed on to the market without adequate time to test the technologies and assure people that genetic engineering of foods is safe.

Several cities and counties in the state have voted to ban genetically-modified organisms within their territories, and these laws would be made invalid by SB 1056. SB1056 would prevent cities and counties from passing any local regulation on seeds, including a prohibition on GE crops, while undermining existing local ordinances that restrict GE in agriculture, and prohibiting any future citizen initiatives relating to food and agriculture. This would stop Santa Cruz from considering a ban on GMO's.

Food safety organizations are asking for people to call, email or fax their Assemblymember to ask him or her to oppose SB 1056. Info about contacting Assemblypeople.

2500 Dead Soldiers

Rogue Valley, 19.06.2006 06:39

Vigil to be held on Wednesday, June 21 beginning at 2 p.m., Vogel plaza in downtown Medford, Oregon (Main & Central).

A peace bell will be rung after the reading of each soldiers name. A coffin, draped with an American flag, will be placed in Vogel plaza to symbolize the resting places of all of the Americans lost so far in this misguided war.

The vigil will also honor the uncounted tens of thousands of innocent Iraqi civilians who have lost their lives in the war.

Independent Journalist Asserts Constitutional Rights and Resists Federal Grand Jury Subpoena

Portland, 18.06.2006 15:39

In a show of courage against an attempt by the federal government to obtain First Amendment protected information, independent journalist Josh Wolf refused to testify or provide video evidence yesterday to a federal grand jury convened in February. The grand jury is investigating events surrounding a July 2005 demonstration against the Group of Eight (G8) meeting that year in Scotland. Wolf asserted his First, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, and Fourteenth Amendment Rights as a basis for declining to answer the grand jury.

In a closed session, San Francisco District Court Judge William Alsup threatened Wolf with confinement for civil contempt if he did not comply with the subpoena. Making his position clear from the start, Judge Alsup ordered the hearing closed, barring a number of supporters and a San Francisco Chronicle reporter from the courtroom. The order ignored both Ninth Circuit case law and a previous order by Magistrate Maria-Elena James requiring that the hearings in the case be open.

The grand jury was convened ostensibly to investigate alleged damage to a police vehicle at the time of the July protest. However, the GJRP, a coalition of lawyers and activists working to resist politically motivated attacks by government, condemned the still-active investigation. The GJRP claimed that the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) are working together to misuse the federal grand jury to circumvent the California Shield Law, which protects journalists' files and notes. "What we saw today was the harassment and intimidation of a journalist and an activist," said Samantha Levens of the Grand Jury Resistance Project (GJRP), who observed the Marshals in the courtroom. "Yet, the dismissal of the subpoena shows how important it is to resist misuse of government power in order to obstruct political fishing expeditions and suppression of free speech rights."

On Wednesday, 14th of July, at 3am police units started to shoot teargas from helicopters on the encampment of striking teachers, from the Oaxaca Democratic Teachers’ Union, Section 22 of the National Union of Education Workers (SNTE in its Spanish initials). Shortly afterwards thousands of police, armed with tear gas, smoke grenade, stun grenades and firearms, stormed the occupied main Plaza in Oaxaca where teachers have been gathering for 23 days to protest against Governor Ulises Ruiz Ortiz and for better education.[ NarcoNews ] The union building was stormed and four journalists from Radio Planton were the first to be arrested.
After the police retreated, the teachers retook the central square. [ Statement of the EZLN ].
At about 6pm the University Radio was raided by police and the transmission cut off.

On Friday, hundertthousands demonstrated in Oaxaca against this police brutality and to demand the resignation of the governor Ulises Ruiz Ortiz.

Celebrating Sanctuary?! What Sanctuary?!

United Kingdom, 18.06.2006 13:08

At a time when enforced deportations are at their highest rate ever and corporate-run detention centres are packed with thousands of people, whose only crime was to seek sanctuary in this country; when dawn raids and the weekly reporting are constant nightmares for many asylum seekers; when the government is introducing increasingly more restrictive and racist immigration controls every day (asylum quotas, immigration point system etc.); comes Refugee Week (19-25 June) to "promote understanding and to celebrate the cultural contributions of refugees."

While the "nationwide festival" is, indeed, an opportunity for refugees and immigrants to make their voices heard, faced with all the "asylum madness" of mainstream media, there are many reasons to assume that the event is essentially a cheap public-relations exercise, both for the government and for some of the organisations and corporations involved. The events appear to be designed to deliberately overlook the real issues surrounding asylum and immigration. Serious political content is systematically suppressed. Besides the Home Office, some events -for example, Birmingham's Celebrating Sanctuary- are partly funded by such dodgy asylum profiteers as the Angel Group. Furthermore, the way in which things are organised mirrors much of Labour's discredited multi-cultural policies in terms of dividing refugees along ethnic lines.

"Places in pieces" is a series of unconventional documentaries with a focus on both the mundane and the peculiar. This visual documentary studies the rhythm and motion of different urban landscapes by using a contemplative direction style, which encourages the viewer to revisit initial perspectives of the urban aesthetic, allowing the ordinary to become cinema. Filmed in Western Europe, the documentary runs silent and will be accompanied by a live musical score, composed with manipulated field recordings.

Critique on the DHS Foster Care System

Portland, 17.06.2006 17:38

I have been in the DHS Foster Care System for 10 years now. Here is some of the bullshit that goes on within. Recently my DHS caseworker has been totally nonexistent so I have not been able to get the help and guidance that I need. Also being in the Foster Care System for so long, I have realized that it is all a BS Joke that is played. Most Foster Parents I have encountered are real pieces of shit who just care about recieving their monthly paycheck of $1500 per month. read the full critique...
