Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board Extends Pollution Waivers

San Francisco Bay Area, 25.06.2006 19:38

Fishing, farming, and environmental groups attended a packed Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board meeting on June 23 to oppose a controversial action that would allow for the continuing decimation of Central Valley rivers and the already imperiled Sacramento Delta. Despite the huge showing of opposition, the Board voted to allow a 5 year extension of waivers that allow for agricultural operations to pollute the waterways of already damaged ecosystems in the Valley.

Local Interview With Lt. Ehren Watada

Portland, 25.06.2006 16:08

Lt. Watada joined the army in March of 2003, believing Bush administration claims that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction and that Sadaam had strong ties to Al Queda and 911 He received his officers commission in December of the same year, served a year in Korea, and upon being redeployed back to the U.S., was informed that he would be deployed to Iraq within a year.

"At that time when I joined up I had no reason to believe that our leaders, the government, the administration would betray the trust of the people........I felt that it was my responsibility as an officer to find out everything I could about war in general in order to better prepare my troops and train them for combat deployment. I also began reading a whole broadbase of articles on the Iraq war on what was going on there at the time and what has led us up to that point. What I found was deeply shocking, not only as a person but also as a member of the military......learning that the administration had betrayed the trust of the people, had deceived us into going into this war that was totally unnecessary and unrelated to the war on terrorism."

About ten men and women carried signs with large print "TORTURE IS INDECENT." One fellow had a very beautiful 6 foot butterfly with words on the wings "Butterflies Not Bombs" Another sign read, "Dick Cheney and George Bush are indecent."

The Great Ashton Court Festival Debate...

Bristol, 25.06.2006 10:38

Has Ashton Court Lost its Way? summary Anarchist606 writes: I have watched the arguments rage back and forth about the Ashton Court Festival and the sponsorship of the event, the ticket prices and new things like the VIP passes. Ashton Court is an event beloved by much of the city, so it's not surprising to see passion aroused by the event. The argument of the festival organizers about costs is;"This year we reluctantly took the decision to put up our basic admission price to £9. This was because we have been hit with two unavoidable cost increases: Firstly, the controversial new Licensing Act has increased our licence fee from about £1,000 to £16,000. Second, new security industry regulations (known as SIA) have added about £45,000 to our costs. In addition, inflation in the industry is running ahead of normal price inflation, and the overall cost of putting on the event this year is going to be in the region of £600,000. Because we are a totally independent organisation we have to find all the money ourselves."OK – Lets take this apart a little. While the figures seems pretty massive, the sponsorship, including Orange, only generates 22% of the income. Compare this to the report by FilmBUZZ on film festivals where the sponsorship generated is on average greater than the 59% Ashton Court plans to take from tickets; "Festivals make the bulk of their income from corporate cash sponsorships. With a mean of nearly $100,000 annually per festival, the average total corporate sponsorship cash commitment is more than $40,000 higher than ticket sale proceeds, the second highest revenue source." For a minority cost of the event, Orange has managed to re-brand the name of the event and its decor in their image. Looking at some of the festivals cited by FilmBUZZ, despite a higher proportion of the costs being shouldered, the events are not renamed as part of the sponsorship. In short, I think Orange as getting a bargain and Ashton Court has sold itself cheap. Now consider the Brighton Festival – the level of sponsorship is is proportionally fairly similar to that of Ashton Court (£799,721 ticket sales vs. £416,924 sponsorship) – also not renamed by its sponsors – now this festival, unlike Ashton Court, does get council funding and their analysis is that this funding reaps a benefit of around £22 per £1 funding in spending by people who attend. Salmon River Timber Sale Loses in 9th Circuit

Rogue Valley, 24.06.2006 22:08

June 23, 2006: The Knob Timber Sale lost on all counts in the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. Knob is one of three old growth timber sales (along with the already cut Glassups sale and currently in court Meteor sale) making up a “mega-sale” on the wild and scenic Salmon River of Siskiyou County, CA.

Jeff Free Luers on Weekend of Resistance to the Green Scare

Portland, 24.06.2006 21:08

Today is my six year anniversary. I almost didn't notice to tell you the truth. It isn't just because one day blends into another in here. Right now I just don't really care that much that I'm in prison. I know how that sounds but that's brutally honest. I got careless, I got sloppy. I slipped up. I got caught.

Now the state wants to send a more powerful message. They sent in agents and infiltrators. They bought off activists and turned others into traitors with threats. The message is simple: the government sees this movement as a threat. And they are telling you that if you challenge them they will try and lock you away for life.

It's a powerful message. It's down right intimidating, to be honest. But, this last weekend (June 9-11) another message was sent by 43 cities around the world. That message was very clear: we will not disappear.

Hinchey Medical Marijuana Amendment Comes up for Debate and Vote

San Francisco Bay Area, 24.06.2006 20:08

Congress will debate and vote on the Hinchey-Rohrabacher Medical Marijuana Amendment to the Justice Appropriations bill this week-- as soon as Monday, June 26th. The Hinchey-Rohrabacher Amendment prohibits the U.S. Department of Justice -- including the Drug Enforcement Administration -- from using any appropriated funds to interfere with the implementation of medical cannabis laws in the 10 states that have approved such use. At least 20 California dispensaries and collectives have been raided by the feds since the Supreme Court gave the DEA a green light with its decision in the Raich case almost a year ago. Several organizations are asking for people to write to their Congressional Representative to urge them to support the Amendment.

Knob Timber Sale Loses 9th Circuit Appeal

San Francisco Bay Area, 24.06.2006 18:39

Old-growth forest near Siskiyou County's wild and scenic Salmon River is headed for the auction block - and the chopping block - after losing a years-long battle in the court of appeals. The Knob Timber Sale is part of a large scale logging plan that included the Glassups Timber Sale which was cut in 2003, and the Meteor Timber Sale which is still winding through the courts.

Salmon River Timber Sale Loses in 9th Circuit Court

Portland, 24.06.2006 16:08

June 23, 2006: The Knob Timber Sale lost on all counts in the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. Knob is one of three old growth timber sales (along with the already cut Glassups sale and currently in court Meteor sale) making up a "mega-sale" on the wild and scenic Salmon River of Siskiyou County, CA. After years in court, the Knob sale will soon be auctioned and slated for cut there after. Some of the last intact oldgrowth forest in the United States can be found in these public-land timber sales.

In 2003 activists came together to stop the cumulative effects of the Glassups, Knob, and Meteor Timber Sales. That year, forest defenders rose up in three tree-sits in the Glassups sale. Although Glassups fell, the Knob auction was held off till now, a huge victory! But the struggle continues - Forest defenders of the Salmon River are committed to fighting the Knob sale through direct action! We are a diverse and colorful group of local concerned community members as well as activists from all over the country. The movement fighting to stop harmful and un-lawful logging is a multi-limbed creature. When the "arm" of litigation tires... the now rested and muscular arm of direct action re-emerges.

Citizens Worry About Health Effects of Mosquito Spray

Tennessee, 24.06.2006 15:09

Emmet Clifford of Donelson was sprayed at close range by a Metro Public Health Department spray truck in 2003. He was driving home with his truck window open unaware his neighborhood was being sprayed with pesticides. Clifford suffered immediate affects and has had long-term health problems since then. He has filed a lawsuit against the city. On June 20, his street (Summerlake Drive) will be sprayed again. Some people from the neighborhood have reported getting automated phone calls from the Health Department announcing the spraying on Monday giving them 24 hours or less to opt out. Others have not received the call because the system does not leave messages.

Fresno's Continued Attack on the Homeless

San Francisco Bay Area, 24.06.2006 04:14

On June 22, the city of Fresno stepped up its campaign against the homeless. City workers and police officers plowed down E Street razing an encampment and destroyed dozens of peoples possessions, despite efforts of the owners to save them. In the past, Fresno has run bulldozers through the camp demolishing everything in their paths, although some residents have learned to quickly move their belongings out of harms way. This time, however, It was not as easy to avoid the cleanup crew's aggressive attack, as police prevented some people from removing their valuables.

Weekend of Workshops

Portland, 24.06.2006 00:38

Portland Anti-Imperialists, Students for Unity, and friends are organizing a weekend of resistance skills workshops- Everyone striving for social and environmental justice is invited...Let's network, learn, and build our movements! Why: As sure as I am that we all have our own answers to that question, we also have common reasons why we organize and fight injustice. One reason is our hopes for future generations. Another is a love of the land; our desire for survival. Still another reason is our connections to what has happened in the past and the lessons to be learned. We are stronger together. As the government esclates repression against the environmental, human rights, and community movements, and targets immigrants, muslims, acitivists, and people of color as scapegoats for a flailing economy, we can't let ourselves be cowed into submission. Work remains to be done to determine the course of our society. For these reasons and more, we are doing what we can to build venues for our community to organize. Hope to see you there!

Help stop the Mexican wolf slaughter!

Portland, 23.06.2006 21:08

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is destroying yet another family of Mexican gray wolves - even though the agency has identified the species as the most endangered mammal in North America. The male of the recently released Nantac Pack was just shot and killed, and the female is being hunted down right now. Both members of this pack were survivors of past predator control actions.

In 1996, an environmental analysis of the Mexican wolf reintroduction program projected that the population would reach at least 100 animals by the end of this year. However, it is believed there are presently fewer than 40 grown wolves in the wild plus an unknown number of pups born this year.

Zachary Jenson Denied Bail Again; Eric McDavid Moved

Portland, 23.06.2006 21:08

Zachary Jenson, Lauren Weiner and Eric McDavid were arrested on January 13, 2006 in Auburn, California as part of the ongoing nationwide Green Scare. They are accused of conspiring to damage or destroy by means of explosive or fire public or private property. Lauren was released on bail and has recently plead guilty; taking a deal that requires her to testify against her co-defendants and assist investigators in every way possible, and we therefore consider her to be a government informant. Eric and Zach have maintained their innocence since they were arrested. They are both pleading not guilty and are still being held in the Sacramento County Main Jail awaiting trial.

Zachary Jenson had his second bail hearing on Wednesday, June 21. He was denied bail yet again; this time by Judge Drodz. After hearing oral arguments, the judge took a five minute recess and returned with his decision.

Eric was moved to a different floor over the weekend and his address has changed. Please continue sending Zach and Eric letters of support. They have both been in total isolation ("T-Sep"), since their arrest, and have little to no real human contact. Spending all but 5 hours per week in a single cell is extremely difficult, and both Eric and Zach absolutely cherish every letter they receive.

Historic building downtown to be demolished for condos

Portland, 23.06.2006 21:08

The Rosefriend is not only historic, it is also affordable housing. It will be torn down to make way for high-end condos. The only reason this is happening is so the church that owns the property can have underground parking for its congregation. Action even at this late date is possible. Maybe an occupation of some sort?

This is a more direct and immediate loss of home for lower-income people than anything happening on Mississippi and Alberta, yet I've heard not so much as a yawn on Indymedia about it.
