Community to rally against NAZi presence in town, with aims of building movement for racial, economic, and social justice Olympia, WA -- On Monday, July 3rd 2006 in Olympia, concerned community members from the surrounding Puget Sound region will be rallying to oppose the presence of a neo-Nazi group called the National Socialist Movement in our community. The rally will begin at 1:00 p.m. at the Tivoli Fountain on the capitol campus, with plans to conclude at sometime after 4:00 p.m.?the NSM has a permit to occupy the steps of the capitol from 2-4 p.m.

The Olympia Movement for Justice and Peace has played a central role in spearheading the organizing necessary for conducting the rally and we strongly urge other organizations to join us in seizing this opportunity to demonstrate, with a fundamental goal of building a sustainable movement working for racial, economic, and social justice. The direction and objectives of our demonstrations are intended to affirm and celebrate diversity. We seek to use this unfortunate occurrence, the rallying of a neo-Nazi hate group in our town, to create a celebratory afternoon of community solidarity, drowning out the negative message promoted by the NSM, forming an atmosphere of unity and compassion.

Come Join Us! Olympia responds to Nazis

The neo-Nazi group, National Socialist Movement, (NSM) is planning a major rally where they are inviting white supremacists from many States to Olympia. Their announced rally of hatred is planned for this coming Monday, July 3rd from 2 to 4 P.M. at the steps of the Legislative Bldg at the State Capitol. We hope to surround them on Monday afternoon and turn our backs on them and turn their rally into one for racial, economic and social justice, and to non-violently make it clear that Nazis are not welcome in Olympia or anywhere. Many of us will be dressed as clowns.

Ogni fuga dal controllo e' una piccola boccata d'aria, una questione affatto banale di sopravvivenza.

Court Report: Four Remaining Defendants in Oregon Case

Portland, 29.06.2006 04:39

Today in court, Jonathan, Nathan, Joyanna and Daniel were arraigned on superceding indictment II. I will have to compare indictments to see what is different from the last superceding, aside from the removal of the other defendants from the indictment, as all are now taking plea agreements. All four of the remaining defendants were in the courtroom with their attorneys, Nathan and Joyanna in shackles and "jail greens".

US Atty Kirk Engdall gave an update about discovery. He said 27,000 pages have been released to defendants, as well as 71 CDs, 4 DVDs and 3 cassette tapes. He said that 1000 documents related to Romania Chevrolet and UW would be released within 30 days, as well as documents and materials related to the testimony of cooperating defendants and unindicted informants.

Richard Perle: A Serial Warmonger!

Baltimore, 29.06.2006 01:08

Richard Perle is at it again! He tossed a hizzy fit when the Bush-Cheney Gang decided to have “talks” with Iran over their disputed nuclear program. The Mother of All Neocons implied President George W. Bush was a coward. He said the President “blinked” and that the Mullahs had “glared” him down. Perle has no shame! He helped to create the disaster which is the Iraqi War. Now, he wants to set the stage for a repeat U.S. performance with Iran.

What is appropriate behavior at pride?

San Francisco Bay Area, 29.06.2006 00:38

Estee Slaughter representatives gave away thousands of "RealityfoldTM" sleep masks at SF Pride on Sunday, June 25th. The black mask, which is emblazoned in gold with the ES logo and "Make the Occupation Disappear," includes text that explains the connections between the company Estee Lauder, the destruction of Palestinians' homes, and World Pride 2006. The representatives were told by SFPD officers to stop distributing the masks. Also that day, Senior Unlimited Nudes activist Tortuga Bi Liberty was told by police to "cover up" when he was picketing and handing out leaflets at Pride while in the nude.

Senate poised to destroy the Internet

San Diego, 28.06.2006 23:39

Network Neutrality — or "Net Neutrality" for short — is the guiding principle that preserves the free and open Internet.
Net Neutrality ensures that all users can access the content or run the applications and devices of their choice. With Net Neutrality, the network's only job is to move data — not choose which data to privilege with higher quality service.

The nation's largest telephone and cable companies — including AT&T, Verizon, Comcast and Time Warner — want to be Internet gatekeepers, deciding which Web sites go fast or slow and which won't load at all.

They want to tax content providers to guarantee speedy delivery of their data. They want to discriminate in favor of their own search engines, Internet phone services, and streaming video — while slowing down or blocking their competitors.

I swear that shit like this really puts a fire under my ass to get community wireless networks going, because the net as we know it is about to disappear, and we're basically at the mercy of rich guy senators doing what their corporate funders tell them to.

Senate committee approves broadcast flag, about to nix net neutrality

Local Indy Journalists Find Themselves Without Press Passes at Pride

San Francisco Bay Area, 28.06.2006 23:39

Dina Boyer is a photographer and videographer who frequently posts media to Indybay, and covers LGBT and police brutality-related issues. Ms. Boyer reports, "For the last 8 years I have been covering the Pride celebration in San Francisco... every year I obtained media passes." After having applied months in advance for her official press passes, she was denied her passes on Saturday. She feels that she was discriminated against, and that her First Amendment rights as a journalist were violated. She feels that her presence as a transgendered woman and a journalist will not be missed when she does not cover Pride events next year. The press credentials of Allen White, who wrote a story critical of the corporate nature of SF Pride for Beyond Chron, were also lifted.

Ko Te Manamotuhake Oo Tuuhoe - Maintaining the mana of Tuuhoe

Aotearoa, 28.06.2006 13:39

Tame Iti (pictured) will be going to court once more this Friday in Rotorua to hear the verdict of his firearms case. He was charged with two counts of unlawfully possessing a firearm after a Waitangi Tribunal hearing in January 2005. At that powhiri in Ruatoki (Bay of Plenty), Tame Iti ceremonially shot the New Zealand flag "to show the disgust of Tuhoe of the atrocities that happened to Tuhoe." [ Indymedia Feature ] This flag is now available at an auction on an internet site. About the protest Tame Iti says: "We wanted them to feel the heat and smoke, and Tuhoe outrage and disgust at the way we have been treated for 200 years. (The Crown) destroyed people's homes and burned their crops and we wanted them to feel that yesterday. We wanted to demonstrate to them what it feels like being powerless. The confiscation and subsequent colonisation have had a devastating effect on Tuhoe over the past 100 years." Tame Iti | Aocafe | Tuhoe | Ngai Tuuhoe

Who in the White House knew about New Hampshire republican phonejamming during the 2002 election? How high up does the scandal go? Could republican strategist Karl Rove have been involved?

And even more importantly, if you could have Karl Rove wrestle anyone in a no-holds barred Battle Royale, who would you pick? I went to Manchester, a city where people like their wrestling, to find out.

AWOL in Canada – Soldiers Speak Out

Portland, 28.06.2006 10:38

According to the Pentagon, nearly 6,000 U.S. soldiers are currently listed as deserters, having been AWOL for at least 30 days. It is unknown how many of these soldiers have taken refuge in Canada, but as the war continues this number is sure to increase. Indymedia contributor, FluxRostrum, has recently filmed interviews with three of these soldiers. In the videos, the soldiers tell their story uncensored and provide a view into the reality of the war not presented by corporate media.

Requiem for a stolen bike

Portland, 28.06.2006 10:38

The bike in question is a red Trek 7200, a kind of hybrid bike?cross between a road bike and a mountain bike. Some might call it a "cruiser"?I think I've heard that term used before. A tall bike, so tall that it was a little too tall for me, and I'm 6' tall. Lowering the seat might help accommodate whoever's riding it now. I could never figure out how to lower the seat. (more description: the front tire was a unique Schwalbe tire, (unique to me) that's about ? the width of the back tire. It's like double-thick rubber so will last for a couple years perhaps. The crankshaft chain rings are worn to nubs in places, particularly the middle ring. Seat fabric is just beginning to fray. Back rim is bent. No back brake.)

comment: I, too, had a 15yr old hybrid Trek stolen from me just last week. My dad bought me that bike when I was 15, and bought himself a matching one which I acted like I thought was dorky but secretly loved. Since then I moved that heavy ass bike around from state to state for 15 years -- sometimes riding it, sometimes letting it sit for a while without a wayward glance (he didn't get much action from 2001-2003: "The Fuel Years"). Yeah, I'm ashamed to admit I took him for granted the way you do with a long-owned overworked and underprized dependable possession. I wish that damn donkey was here for me to apologize to right now.

Cheney Spoke of Need to Establish US Presece in Mid-East

Portland, 28.06.2006 10:38

Mr. Malloy had Greg Pallast on a few days later - investigative reporter for the British Guardian Newspaper - who has discovered and disclosed a document of the oil companies' written before the war which states that the goal of the occupation in Iraq would be to control oil production in accordance with what the Saudis wish. He said, essentially it called for "shutting off the spigot".....in order to raise prices. Now things make much more sense. Things are not going badly in Iraq. Things are going just as the oil giants had planned.

Day of protest against rendition flights at British airports

Portland, 28.06.2006 09:39

Saturday 24th June saw a day of protest at 5 British airports (Glasgow, Prestwick, Edinburgh, Gatwick and Birmingham International) against the so-called `rendition flights`. The protests were supported by the national Stop the War and by a variety of local campaigns.

The process of what is euphemistically called `extraordinary rendition` amounts to secretly and illegally shuttling people around the world for interrogation, very often to countries where torture is practiced.

It was hot and sunny in Olympia but people gathered to show their support for Lt. Watada and the other soldiers who are refusing to fight in Iraq. Mr. and Mrs. Watada were there to support their son's courageous act. Other parents and family members are supporting their sons and daughters who also refusing to take part in this illegal war. Courage and patriotism take many forms, including acts of conscience. There comes a point when silence is no longer an acceptable option but their decision to refuse to fight in Iraq cannot have been easy. I hope that we find ways to support the sacrifices they, and their families, are making. [ read more ]

Fighting Repression: Portland Events of Education, Agitation and Celebration

Portland, 28.06.2006 09:39

This coming weekend—Friday, June 30 to Sunday, July 2—will feature several events in Portland, Ore. relating to state repression and opposition to it. Each of these events was organized independently of the others, yet the scheduled events compliment one another well.

In combination, they form a curriculum of sorts for those attempting to understand government repression—from prisons in this country to the infamous torture at Abu Ghraib, from the current "Green Scare" prosecution to enduring institutional violence against communities of color. These events will also be an ideal starting point for those who would like to discuss what to do next, in order for a freer way of life to replace chains, coercion and complacency.

Police Produce Misleading Statements on Tasers

Aotearoa, 28.06.2006 05:09

#media_7234;left# A Campaign Against The Taser.com report of police statements about the proposed taser stun gun trial in September shows “a woeful mix of misleading statements and unsupported assurances.” Campaign Against The Taser.com has completed a comparison between police public statements and their internal policies regarding taser use.

“A clear pattern emerges from our comparison,” says Campaign Against The Taser.com spokesperson Marie Dyhrberg, barrister. “The Campaign Against The Taser.com’s report shows that internal police documents are frank about how the taser will be used while the public comments are intentionally misleading.”
