Fourth of July is a Time to Reflect on Meaning of the Flag

San Francisco Bay Area, 01.07.2006 07:08

On the Fourth of July, patriotic Americans everywhere celebrate Independence Day with fireworks, cookouts, and time with their families. This year, some celebrations will be interrupted by reminders that the United States does not give freedom to everyone. One activity was nearly made illegal this summer: burning the American flag. An amendment backed by the Bush administration to give Congress the power to "ban desecration of the American flag" received one vote less than was needed for passage. Fourth of July protests in the Bay Area will remind people that US imperialism in the Middle East is causing detention, torture, and death for many.

Rob los Ricos, Freed Political Prisoner Speaks Saturday at Laughing Horse

Portland, 01.07.2006 06:09

The self described 'one hit wonder anarchist rock star' Rob 'Los Ricos' Thaxton wasn't always a rebellious 'rock star', or an anarcho-activist, or a "punk" political prisoner. There was a time, not that long ago, when he was just another chavo chicano growing up in some forgotten field town called Pampa, Texas, Watching rebels, reformists, rioters, racketeers, and real rock stars tap dance across his tv screen. But while changing channels, culture, capitalism, corporatization, and the clarion call of chaos came crashing down in the form of the radicalizing revelations of the terroristic Tet Offensive; the political proclamation 'No Vietnamese ever called me nigger' of black (power) boxing champ Muhammad Ali; and finally, the seditious inspiration of the women fighters of the radical Weather underground who seized his catholic grade school for two years when he was a child. By the righteous (r)age of twelve, Rob began to work with various revolutionary organizations, and eventually left Pampa for the streets of Dallas, Texas, where he joined CISPES (the Committee in solidarity with the People of El Salvador), worked with ACT UP, and KNON-FM, a peoples (Pirate) radio station, where he served as program director. read more >>

Planning For Disaster

Bristol, 30.06.2006 11:38

Planes, cars and houses: the South West's climate black hole summary Crash writes: This summer, developers, airports and the government will be taking advantage of your holidays by sneaking through a nightmare vision of economic growth and environmental disaster through a series of short-lived 'consultations'. Massive expansion at Bristol airport, tens of thousands of new houses and the mother of all South West roadbuilding programmes are on the drawing board. Experience of fighting road, airport and housing schemes across the country have shown that it's far easier to kill off deranged plans for the carve up of our towns and countryside early on, rather than waiting for the builders to arrive. Some examples of what we're up against: Full Article + article summary below...Aviation: Bristol Airport's masterplan is due to be published very soon. In it they propose a doubling of passengers on current levels. The airport already produces more CO2 emissions than all of Bristol's traffic – by 2030 it will be producing 8% of all the South West's emissions. A report by a senior economics professor showed that Bristol Airport drains millions of pounds from the South West economy and damages tourism. Roads: You can't build a major airport without major roads. Once again, the taxpayer is likely to be asked to pour millions into road schemes to support car travel to the expanding airport. The recently published Greater Bristol Strategic Transport Study, published by engineering consultants Atkins (experts in winning motorway widening contracts ) proposes widening of the M4 and M5 as well as construction of a South Bristol Ring Road. Houses: The Regional Spatial Strategy for the South West was published for 'consultation' recently, with a closing date at the end of August ... It proposes 92,500 new houses for the Greater Bristol Area in the next 20 years. Unsurprisingly perhaps, its emphasis is on "reducing the impact" of climate change, rather than achieving absolute reductions in emissions.Planning for Disaster | Related Events: More Flights, more Floods (6th July) | Action on Transport (29th July) | Recent News: Local rail group meets Executive Member for Transport | Camp for climate action info | Commuters call on Council to invest in local rail | Also Of Interest: New SouthWest Web Portal is up and running! | New Report: Supermarkets DO NOT Mean Prosperity | New Supermarket on Gloucester Road |Contribute An Article

Boycott Bayview and Ralph's Thriftway

Portland, 30.06.2006 08:39

Ralphs and Bayview Thriftways owner Kevin Storeman has decided (based on his own moral standards) that the pharmacy located at Ralph's Thriftway on the Eastside of Olympia will not carry the emergency contraceptive known as Plan B. Local activists have organized a pickett line to take place Wednesday 6/28, Thursday 6/29, Friday 6/30, and Sunday 7/2 from 5pm - 7pm. There will be sign making supplies at the pickett line and plenty of free thinking individuals to support the protection of health care for all women in this day and age. It's 2006! Let's show Mr. Storeman how his decision affects our community.

Fort Lewis--Standing with Ehren Watada

Portland, 30.06.2006 08:39

The bridge spanning I-5 just outside the entrance to Ft. Lewis was crowded with Lt. Watada supporters. I am not sure how many people were there but the bridge was packed and people spilled out onto the grassy area near the base. With signs, banners and doves, they waved to the people in cars.

A steady stream of people leaving the base seemed mostly indifferent, but a few waved their agreement with the pro-peace crowd and a handful registered their opposition. However, after a short time, no more cars left the base, suggesting they may have left at another exit. A few state troopers and local police had a light presence and mostly ensure that traffic flowed and people did not wander down the entrance to I-5.

San Francisco Bay Area, 30.06.2006 04:17

On June 29, 2006, the US Supreme Court ruled on Hamdan v. Rumsfeld, concluding that US President George Bush overstepped his authority in creating military war crimes tribunals for Guantanamo Bay detainees. The Court, in a 5-3 decision, held that the Bush administration did not have authority to set up the tribunals and found the military commissions illegal under both military justice law and the Geneva Convention.

"Stop Torture Flights" Day of Action

United Kingdom, 30.06.2006 01:08

Saturday, 24th June, saw a day of protest at 5 British airports (Glasgow, Prestwick, Edinburgh, Gatwick and Birmingham International) against the so-called rendition flights, used by the CIA to secretly and illegally transport 'terror suspects' arrested or kidnapped around the world for 'interrogation' in other countries, where torture of prisoners is practiced. The protests were supported by Birmingham Guantanamo Campaign, Scotland Against Criminalising Communities, Save Omar Deghayes Campaign and Edinburgh Stop The War Coalition. The 5 are among tens of British and European airports where CIA-owned or chartered jets have been logged.

In Birmingham, about 20 people took part in a vigil on the A45 outside Birmingham International Airport to "demand action to put a stop to the CIA's torture flights". They were later joined by people from Oxford and Coventry. In Edinburgh, the protest involved about 35 people from different campaigns. Banners and placards read "Stop the torture flights", "Stop the War". In both cases, activists were dressed up in orange jump suits, worn by detainees in Guantanamo, and shackled and handcuffed. Similar protests took place at Glasgow, Gatwick and Prestwick airports.

The UK and other EU governments have repeatedly dnied any knowledge of such flights, despite the mounting evidence of their complicity. A report by the Council of Europe's rapporteur, Dick Marty, said European governments, including Britain, were complicit in these abuses. The report was debated by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe on 27 June. [the report in pdf]
