Lower Voting Age in Portland / Multnomah County?

Portland, 09.07.2006 14:39

I'm beginning to craft a campaign to lower the voting age in Portland or Multnomah County. Here's what I'm thinking: Lower the voting age to 15. Arguments for this age include: many 15 year olds have part-time jobs, pay income tax, can be tried as adults for violent crimes, etc. Draft a resolution and submit it to either City Council or the Board of County Commissioners (BCC). I think both have their benefits. The BCC is generally more supportive of youth causes, but there might be some outcry from East County. Portland is geographically smaller, which would make organizing easier. Maybe shoot for both jurisdictions? I imagine one would adopt the resolution shortly after the other, anyways...

It'd be advantageous to time this right before an election. The officials who vote in favor of the resolution could be persuaded by all of those youth votes that'd be freed up... In 2008, two BCCers (Naito and Rojo de Steffey) are up for reelection, as well as two City Commissioners (Adams, Leonard) and Mayor Potter. So, 2008 seems like a good target year.

The Bush Visit: Dubya Does Daley

Chicago, 09.07.2006 10:08

Several hundred Chicagoans gathered outside of the Drake Hotel on Friday to protest the latest Chicago visit of George W. Bush at a $1.2 million fund-raiser for Republican gubernatorial candidate Judy Baar Topinka. The midday demonstration, initially called by local antiwar organizations to demand an immediate withdrawal of US troops from Iraq and an end to US intervention elsewhere, also brought out immigrant rights, LGBT and pro-choice groups outraged that Dubya was in Chicago being feted by the city's coporate and political elite. Signs calling for Bush's impeachment were everywhere. Photos: [ 1 | 2 ]

The President kicked off his 24 hour visit to Chicago Thursday evening with a gala birthday dinner hosted by Mayor Daley at the Firehouse restaurant in the S. Loop. Other guests included the chairmen of the CBOT and Merc, CEOs of the Illinois Manufacturers Association, the Black and Hispanic Chambers of Commerce and top honchos from Caterpillar and Exelon. On Friday morning, Bush held a lengthy press conference at the Museum of Science and Industry — the first in a series of 'on the road' press events White House media strategists hope will counter the President's plummeting approval ratings, particuarly around the war in Iraq. Asked by a reporter if his opinion of the Mayor had changed in any way in the wake of the latest City Hall corruption scandals — including Thursday's conviction of former patronage chief Robert Sorich, Bush replied it had not. Bush asserted that Chicago was his kind of town and Richard Daley was his kind of mayor.

Troops Home Fast in DC, SF, and Sacramento Area

San Francisco Bay Area, 09.07.2006 00:39

Thousands of people gathered across the US during the week of July 4th to protest the on-going war in Iraq. One of the largest demonstrations took place in Washington D.C and was organized by Code Pink. Code Pink also launched a nationwide fast to demand an end to the war. The fasters plan to stay in front of the White House every day until August 14th, when they will move the hunger strike next to President Bush's vacation ranch in Crawford, Texas. Fasters are also in front of Dianne Feinstein's SF office daily from 8am to 8pm through Wednesday, August 12th.

Mercadona: longa kaj digna striko, tie ĉi kaj nun.

Trail Building Weekend in the San Gabriel Mountains

Portland, 08.07.2006 16:38

July 1'st was another work day for the San Gabriel Mountains Trail Builders who once again devoted a day of hot, sweaty, unpaid labor toward repairing trails in the Crystal Lake camping grounds in the Angeles National Forest. Since I wasn't doing anything that day I decided to join them, my bicycle and camping gear being carried up in a pickup truck and Mike, Tom, and I driving up in a car to the Rincon Fire Station.

While we were driving up Highway 39, we passed through a cloud of smoke. I asked Mike if he might turn around so that we could check it out even though it looked like someone parked along the highway was working on her car. I got out and looked over the canyon wall down to the river below, then went back to get Tom. Since Tom fortunately wears a US Forest Service uniform, I asked if he'd come join me in asking the guy down below to put out his ground fire. The area was packed with humans, many of them with BBQ and stoves going, and this guy had a ground fire going, putting everyone's life at risk.

Contact City Council to Support Moratorium on Hayden Island

Portland, 08.07.2006 16:38

Over 100 residents of Hayden Island (commonly known as Jantzen Beach) attended a meeting Wednesday night to hear Commissioner Sam Adams proposal to place a moratorium on Hayden Island. His proposal would put a development delay on commercial development that significantly increase vehicle trip or threaten land needed to construct the new Interstate-5 Bridge. The moratorium would end when a neighborhood comprehensive plan is developed that addresses road infrastructure, pedestrian facilities, and modes of mass transit. Adams plans to bring a resolution to Portland City Council on Wednesday, July 12th at 3pm to start the 45-day public notice in order for Portland City Council to consider enacting a temporary moratorium.

Independence From America

United Kingdom, 08.07.2006 09:38

On 4th July 2006, American Independence Day, the annual Independence from America demonstration was held at NSA Menwith Hill [ Photos: 1 | 2 ]. It was a hot and sunny Tuesday and the 100 or so protestors were outnumbered by the massive police presence, after drumming, songs from Tom Neilson and some speeches there was a circumnavigation of the expanding spy base. One woman was arrested and later released after a 'caution', see the report from Lindis and Annie for the full story.

The National Security Agency (NSA) base at Menwith Hill, near Harrogate, is the biggest US spy base outside America and it plays a key role in the interception of electronic communications, missile defence and star wars. The Campaign for the Accountability of American Bases (CAAB), the organisers of the demonstration, evolved out of the long campaign of protest at Menwith Hill, which have been going on since the 1950's, read on for links to reports of events held there over the last few years.

Another Example of Racial Profiling

Portland, 08.07.2006 03:38

Just after reading the front page of the Oregonian to see another example of continued racial profiling in Oregon, days later, my son and I became victims too.

I am a 63- year mother, tax paying citizen, and property owner who can now say my family and I can be added to the growing list of racial profiling victims in Portland, OR. On the evening of June 11, 2006 I was at my home doing laundry, and later heard the cries of my son screaming to me that the police are after him. As I emerged from my home, saw 10 police officers, my 18-year old son on his knees, in a controlled position, and a police officer standing over him pointing a taser gun at him, and telling him he would be shot if he moved, I thought I was seeing a movie.

Areas covered included Beach Boardwalk, Wharf, Depot Park, Downtown, West Cliff, Seabright areas, Mission Street, and Ccean Street. The handbills were created to bring to the surface the simering tensions between the business interests (and their lapdogs in the downtown association and city council) and the rest of the citizens of this town. Ft. Campbell Soldier's Wife Demands Accountability

Tennessee, 08.07.2006 00:09

Clarksville, TN: Civilian personnel frequently call the 101st Airborne Unit the "one hundred and worst" rather than 101st. It is unusual for someone from within the 101st to step forward and demand redress for improper procedure, but in the face of growing scandals, some people are stepping forward to talk about accountability and not the least of them is Stephanie Murphy. Stephanie Murphy is a soldier's wife. Her husband is currently deployed in Iraq and she lives at Fort Campbell. She has been active working within the system to bring awareness to basic issues she feels need to be addressed within the service, she wants to bring attention to problems both large and small in the 101st Airborne Division, Post at Ft. Campbell and for those soldiers currently deployed in Iraq. She feels that these problems are not just about her and her husband, but rather, they are only the tip of the iceberg.

$3 dollar donation requested. no one turned away for lack of funds

At St. Francis Church Saturday, July 8, a new film, "On The Edge," will have its first public screening in Portland. On The Edge is a documentary covering the brutal murders of hundreds of poor young women in the border town of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, murders that have been repeatedly ignored and unresolved by police and governments since 1993, despite the continued and persistent efforts of family members and activists to obtain justice for the victims. Rather than provide an easy, murder-mystery style solution to the crimes, the film sets out to explain the social, cultural, and economic factors that have created this situation where the killings can continue, and continue to go unpunished. Filmmaker Steev Hise, and guest speaker from PCASC will be in attendance.

Oaxaca Initiates Alternative Government

San Diego, 07.07.2006 21:08

The Popular Assembly of the People of Oaxaca (APPO, by its Spanish initials) declared itself the governing body of Oaxaca on the morning of July 5.

During a student march of several thousand, the Popular Assembly convened representatives of Oaxaca’s state regions and municipalities, unions, non-governmental organizations, social organizations, cooperatives, and parents. They met for several hours in the teachers’ building to decide the next steps of this social movement. Meanwhile perhaps 2000 citizens milled around outside in the zocalo.

The establishment of the Popular Government of the State of Oaxaca is an attempt to revitalize and broaden the historic form of government familiar to peoples in Oaxaca. This form of government is known as usos y costumbres (literally, “practices and customs”) and is recognized as a legitimate form of local self-rule in the Oaxaca state constitution. Usos y costumbres don’t acknowledge political parties; the system functions by consensus.

For the population of Oaxaca, the idea of governing by consensus remains part of the common cultural heritage. Therefore, as APPO was convoked, the modest people who comprise 80% of Oaxaca’s population, recognized it immediately. And they support it, despite the obvious difficulties of convening authorities from around the state. Since these authorities receive no pay, a trip to the capital city is not easy. But it’s happening.

MEXICO VOTE FRAUD: Obrador ballots found in public dump; up to 3 mil "thrown out"

Portland, 07.07.2006 20:40

Supporters of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador show electoral ballots that were found in a public dump. One of Obrador's aides, Claudia Sheinbaum, went on to claim that their party had found "very grave inconsistencies" in 50,000 polling booths, including 18,646 in which there were more votes cast than registered voters.

Obrador calls Mexican elections fradulent, and wants a full recount. Leonel Cota, president of Obrador's PRD party, vowed to "launch a battle for the legitimacy of the election," and a COALITION of the PRD AND TWO OTHER parties held a press conference and issued a statement.... --- Mexico's review of 41 million votes cast in Sunday's disputed presidential election started on Wednesday. Soon, media trumpeted unofficial gap between the two leading candidates, Calderon [a Bush-linked internationalist neofascist, straight out of the Mexican Energy [oil] Department, where he was once Secretary]...the other, Obrador, a [presumably nationalist] leftist, narrowed as a record of fraud increasingly mounted.

Thanks to Obrador's supporters, of whom many are poor ruralites and urbanites who have seen their standard of living fall more by NAFTA and neoliberalist policies, they are eager to see competitive democracy take root in Mexico. This election is seen as a vote for or against more neoliberalist policies. Obrador's supporters (ACROSS SEVERAL PARTIES) could take to the streets to defend democratic legality against an internationalist fascist Bush-linked candidate Calderon's coup. Such foreign interference in Mexican elections has already been noted: Mexican arrests of Bush family linked Choice-Point election corporation from the U.S., which was illegally found in possession of Mexican voter rolls, according to Greg Palast.
