In The Hands Of Lunatics

Portland, 17.07.2006 10:39

Your rights to privacy on any level have been taken away and you still think you live in the world's great democracy---You are fooling yourself.

From the time the alarm clock goes off in the morning you, your family, friends, and the rest of the nation are under government scrutiny. When you go to bed, the government knows where you have gone, what you have read, what you have bought and whom you are going to bed with at the end of the day. Your file contains your daily existence just waiting for someone to pull it up and see if you are a "good" citizen of the state.

Metro Health Department Violates Policy

Tennessee, 17.07.2006 06:09

Nashville, TN: The Metro Public Health Department made claims they sprayed in Sylvan Park on June 21, 2006 because of the large numbers of mosquitoes found in their traps. However, some residents of Sylvan Park were reporting that the mosquitoes in the area did not seem bad before spraying. So, under the Tennessee Open Records Law, the No Spray Coalition requested any and all trapping results for all neighborhoods that were sprayed in June 2006. Based on the data Dr. Brent Hager and Dr. Sanmi Areola of the Health Department gave No Spray Coalition volunteers, the Health Department violated their own mosquito control policy which requires 35 female mosquitoes in a trap before they can spray. There were 17 female mosquitoes found in the trap their night before spraying took place.

Massacres Will Keep Happening as Long as Israeli Actions are Unchecked

DC, 16.07.2006 22:10

These photos were sent to Angry Arab by the editor of the Lebanese newspaper Al Safir. This is due to concern that few in the West will see them. angryarab.blogspot.com The photos show collective punishment against Lebanon in reaction to the kidnapping of 2 Israeli soldiers. This is the same form of collective punishment seen in the air war and invasion of Gaza, Palestine, in retaliation for the kidnapping of another soldier there. These types of actions are clear violations of the Geneva Conventions.

Maine Social Forum Summer Update!

New Hampshire, 16.07.2006 21:09

As the longest day of the year passes us by we are coming closer and closer to the first ever Maine Social Forum. This historical event will be an amazing opportunity to teach, learn, and grow the movement for social change here in Maine. Through a series of events, workshops, and panels organized by folks in Maine focusing on issues that are particular to us we will ask ourselves is “another Maine is possible?!”

A Review of An Inconvenient Truth

New Hampshire, 16.07.2006 21:09

I was urged to see An Inconvenient Truth by an activist friend of mine. She wrote me in all caps, so she really must have meant it. If you want a clear explanation of the science surrounding global climate change, this is certainly it. It's worth seeing for this alone, despite it's flaws. Gore's presentation is clear and well-articulated; the images of environmental holocaust and its horrific human consequences do inspire one to take action; and oh the graphs, so many graphs. It's flaws, however, are certainly present.

People's Forum in Mali

Austria, 16.07.2006 18:07

In Gao, Mali, fand von 15. bis 17. Juli 2006 das Fünfte People's Forum statt.

Ontario Police Raid Grassy Narrows Blockade: 17 Arrests Reported

Portland, 16.07.2006 15:38

July 15 - Ontario Provincial Police have reportedly arrested 17 people at Grassy Narrows in retaliation for Thursday's peaceful blockade of the Trans-Canada Highway near Kenora, Ontario. The blockade by Rainforest Action Network activists and Grassy Narrows First Nations people drew worldwide attention to the decade-long fight to stop clearcut destruction at Grassy Narrows

The latest reports from the camp say more than fifty police officers have cut off all access to and from the camp. Police set up a highway checkpoint yesterday and began arresting native and non-native people involved in Thursday's action.

The barricade on the Trans-Canada Highway Thursday included activists locked down to cement barrels and a Weyerhaueser logging truck, and one who perched at the top of a 10-meter tripod. The protests succeeded in blocking logging trucks from operations in Grassy Narrows for most of the day and evening. Police made no arrests at the time and did not attempt to remove the barricade, which was dismantled voluntarily around 10 pm Thursday.

Neo-Nazis in US military

Portland, 16.07.2006 13:08

Desperate for recruits, the US military is lowering standards and turning a blind eye to neo-Nazis joining up. Iraq is not only a training ground for the next generation of Al-Qaida, but the next generation of Timothy McVeigh-style domestic terrorists are getting combat training, combat experience, and even using the military to steal weapons and recruit new members.

"As a professional soldier, my goal is to fill the ranks of the United States Army infantry with skinheads. As street brawlers you will be useless in the coming race war. As trained infantrymen you will join the ranks of the Aryan warrior brotherhood." --Resistance magazine, 1999

HOPE Health Care initiative update

Portland, 16.07.2006 13:08

I wrote Mitch Greenlick to find out the status of the HOPE Constitutional initiative that would have made access to health care a fundamental right in Oregon. Here is his reply and my commentary.

We'll know in two to four weeks. But it seems pretty unlikely. We would need about 88% valid signatures and that doesn't happen very often.
This inititative would have likely made the ballot with another 5,000 raw signatures. That represents about 200 collective volunteer hours. Had each of us who post and reads Portland Indymedia invested 1 hour (or one additional hour) to gather signatures for this effort we would have made the ballot for sure.

G8 Summit, St Petersburg, Russia - Protests and Repression

Portland, 16.07.2006 13:08

NO G8, REPRESSION IN RUSSIA + GLOBAL SOLI DEMOS As President Putin continues to speak about the improvements of democracy in Russia to the international press, the repression against activists goes on. It's less than a day until the beginning of the summit and already over 200 activists of all stripes and colors and been detained, arrested, intimidated and even beaten. The number of violations against civil and human rights reaches more than hundred. [ read more ]

Anti-G8 Protest Successful in Russia With colorful pink costumes and free food for everyone, anarchists showed their resistance to the G8 in proper fashion, by holding an anti-capitalist carnival in the heart of Moscow. In typical celebratory carnival atmosphere over a hundred SPB8 anti-G8 activists held a bright and picturesque, quick and manoeuvrable action from Yesenin monument in Tverskoi boulevard to Smolenskaya square. Not a single person was been detained. [ read more ]

Russian pre-G8 repression begins This story - as if taken straight out of a detective novel - occurred on July 9-10th in St. Petersburg. Sunday night July 9th, in the northern part of the city two German activists who arrived in the city with the bicycle caravan were arrested on the street to "check their IDs". The German activists have shown passports at once, but they were nonetheless taken to the police station, together with Lyosha from Tyumen who came out to meet them wearing only his slippers. From Manila IMC: Killing Season in the Philippines

San Diego, 16.07.2006 10:38

MANILA - Political activist Cathy Alcantara was gunned down by unidentified assailants last December 5, outside the resort where she had helped to organize a conference on farmers' rights.

Two months later, the lifeless body of her activist friend, 19-year-old Audie Lucero, was found in a remote rice field. Lucero was last seen surrounded by police officers and soldiers in a hospital lobby, inexplicably crying.

Annaliza Abanador-Gandia, another left-leaning activist, had frequently marched with the two victims, often at the forefront of demonstrations calling for various sorts of political change, including the ouster of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, an end to US military exercises in the Philippines, and overhaul of the World Trade Organization's free-trade policies.

On May 18, it was Abanador-Gandia's turn to die. It's unclear exactly what happened, because she was alone inside her shop that night. Her body was found slumped on a table, eight bullets through her face, chest and stomach. The gunpowder found on her face indicated that she had been shot at point-blank range.

Fighting For New Orleans: Two Organizations In Full Force

NYC, 16.07.2006 04:16

With the year anniversary of Katrina less than two months away, two organizations made it clear that the city of New Orleans still needs help. For the Common Ground Collective and the New Orleans Worker Justice Coalition, the work has just begun, though they have both helped thousands of families, there are thousands more to go. “Across the city, workers are living in abandoned cars, working in toxic conditions, chasing after a web of subcontractors for their wages, and running from police and immigration authorities who have intensified their enforcement efforts while labor law enforcement is lax” ( http://neworleansworkerjustice.org/). Many former New Orleans inhabitants are forced to live on low wages and cannot find employment in the cities where they have since sought refuge. In addition, those who attempt to return find that they have no schools and no housing. This is why, both organizations felt the need to come out yesterday and spread the word that they are thriving, but need our help to keep on doing what they do.

Friday it came to a rally in de la Guerra Plaza around the resigned and still employed reporters and staff at the News Press.
