Bicycle Picnic in Grant Park

Portland, 22.07.2006 01:38

The picnic is a peaceful and fun show of solidarity that the radio stations actions ( see below ) are unforgivable and that we as citizens will no longer allow corporations to profit by exploiting public resources and putting us at risk.

On Saturday July 22nd bicyclist are meeting in Grant Park ( NE 33rd Ave & US Grant Pl from 11:30am to 3:30pm. This is a chance for bicyclist to talk to one another about the violent and threatening comments reported to www.bikeportland.org, the Mercury and the Willamette Week.

The nationally syndicated radio show, The Playhouse, and it's parent station Jammin 95.5 FM, are also holding an event that is open to the public in Grant Park between noon and 3:00pm. Almost all in the bicycling community agrees that the radio station should place the podcast of the morning show of July 13th back on it's Internet site, which they removed citing the sound of a can of "Rockstar energy drink being crushed" on the air is why the archive is not available. Rockstar, is a 100K sponsor of the show ... and for you that do not know Rockstar is owned by Micheal Savage's son.

We could really use a laptop that can get Internet in Grant Park. The reason for this is because we want to have a place where people can file FCC complaints against the radio station on line at out picnic. If any one has this ability please contact me.

More so please feel free to drop by and express your concerns to the bicyclist or the radio station. the organizers of the bicycle picnic are in the process of having out own fun events.

Castle Park Public Consultation

Bristol, 21.07.2006 17:38

Friday the 21st to Sunday 23rd in the Galleries in Broadmead summary Sprout writes: There is a public consultation on Friday the 21st to Sunday 23rd in the Galleries in Broadmead where the developers are showing what they intend to do. Its on the top floor, open 9 to 6 on Friday and Sunday and 11 to 5 on Sunday. Full Article. Kika writes: The 'developers' have got their claws into the only green bit of the city centre and are planning on 'enhancement' ( whatever that means- vague or what!) of the nice green bit opposite Wine Street and beyond. (Maps etc). Yes, you heard right, the only green bit of the city centre is going to be razed and turned into yet more 'vibrant shopping and living areas' which normal people can't afford. Ever relaxed with your shoes off in the city? Sat down with your lunch on fresh green grass? Well, too late now if you haven't, cos they're ALREADY STARTED DIGGING IT UP. Full Article.(Images: www.savecastlepark.co.uk. Above: 'the 'neglected' area full of people!') bigtallsimon writes (from the comments): That area of Castle Park is much loved by the people who are signing the online petition in their hundreds, the same people who use the park daily to escape from their offices at lunch time, especially in the summer. I think we can all agree that the buildings at that end of the park are an eyesore, but I strongly disagree that this, in turn, means that space currently used as park should also be built on ... When that area was first filled with buildings, the floating harbour (or even the river) would have been full of commercial traffic serving them. Times have changed and the heart of Bristol is not an industrial centre any more. There is too little green open space in Bristol and I am strongly opposed to the destruction of what's left. Stop Israel War! Demonstration: Interviews

San Diego, 21.07.2006 14:08

Following abductions of one Israeli soldier on the Gaza/Israel border on June 25 and two Israeli soldiers on the Lebanon/Israel border on July 12, Israel has engaged in massively destructive attacks on both Gaza and Lebanon, resulting in over 90 Palestinian deaths and over 325 Lebanese deaths to date, along with mass arrests of Palestinian elected officials, widespread destruction of crucial infrastructure in Lebanon and looming humanitarian crises in both Gaza and Lebanon. These war crimes have prompted protests around the globe, including a demonstration of about 200 people in downtown San Diego in front of Horton Plaza on Thursday.

Video interviews with protesters reveal information and opinions that are not appearing in the corporate media, including:
"... the overwhelming might of the Israeli army, the fourth largest army in the world, essentially means that Israel can continue to act with impunity, and that the Arabs are left to fight back or retaliate with very limited means and when they do we can see that Israel has no regard for international law, no regard for humanity, no regard for civilian life, no regard for anything except apparently for the master plan of destroying the whole region and being the sole power in the region."
"... Israel has 10,000 prisoners of war, meaning Palestinian or Lebanese, and ... on almost a daily basis kidnaps fighters from the opposite side. These fighters are held in long-term detention, they are tortured.."
"We want to ask our government to not support Israel, to not send our tax dollars to Israel, to spend it on education and not on war."
"... to sit home and just watch the news, which is so nauseatingly one sided, is very frustrating, it's very difficult for us to listen to the essentially Israeli line on CNN, MSNBC, FOX and all the other news stations..."
"This is the place where decisions come from, they come from the streets..."
"They had one civil war, which they rebuilt and now all of that is gone in a matter of nine days! It seems like people just have callous hearts. And we're trying to say, please wake up, people are dying! ... Hopefully this will get to someone, it will move someone to action."

"Collective Punishment" Fuels Middle East Crisis

Tennessee, 21.07.2006 13:09

In the light of recent events in the Middle East, policy makers in the United States must take a stand against state sponsored terrorism. We have a grave moral responsibility in this crisis to take a stand for peace and against retribution. The people of the United States must acknowledge the role we play in the current crisis in Israel, Lebanon, Gaza and Iraq. Our responsibility lies in our support of the state sponsored agression by our government and the government of Israel against innocent women, children and other non-combatants. The current round of actions against Lebanon, Gaza and Iraq violate the Fourth Geneva Convention, which sets out the obligations of occupying powers and specifically prohibits collective punishments, "targeted" assassinations, and destruction of the infrastructure of an occupied territory.

EFF's Spying Case Moves Forward - Judge Denies Government's Motion to Dismiss AT&T Case

Portland, 21.07.2006 09:38

San Francisco - A federal judge today denied the government's motion to dismiss the Electronic Frontier Foundation's (EFF's) case against AT&T for collaborating with the NSA in illegal spying of millions of ordinary Americans. This allows the case to go forward in the courts.

The court deferred to the government on one matter: the judge ordered that EFF can't compel AT&T to disclose whether or not the telecom participated in a separate program, first reported by USA Today, in which the NSA allegedly examines Americans' phone records without a warrant.

As World Evacuates Thousands... What About the Lebanese

San Francisco Bay Area, 20.07.2006 23:10

Nations around the world are struggling to evacuate tens of thousands of their citizens from Lebanon as Israel continues its bombardment of the country. Britain, along with other European countries and the United States, is using Cyprus as the hub of their operations for full-scale evacuations as the fighting intensifies.

Jonathan Cook writes for Electronic Lebanon: "If anyone doubted the racism of our Western media, here it was proudly on display. The BBC apparently considers their Beirut reporter's first duty to find out what meals HMS Gloucester's chef will be preparing for the evacuees. Lebanese and Palestinian civilians die unnoticed by the Western media (though not by the Arab channels) while we learn of onboard sleeping arrangements on the ship bound for Cyprus."

US And World Community Give Israel Free Reign To Kill Lebanese Civilians

San Francisco Bay Area, 20.07.2006 21:08

The US is giving Israel a window of a week to inflict maximum damage on Hizbullah before weighing in behind international calls for a ceasefire in Lebanon, according to British, European and Israeli sources. Canada's Conservative government has responded to the murder of eight Canadian citizens in an Israeli air strike with a shrug of its shoulders. The Canadians, four adults and four children aged from 1 to 7, were among eleven members of the Al-Akhrass family who were killed as the result of Israeli strafing of the south Lebanese village of Aitaroun. Of the three hundred people killed in the past eight days of fighting, the overwhelming majority have been, like Montreal pharmacist Ali Al-Akhrass and his family, innocent civilians.

While the US media seeks to present the current crisis in terms of equal suffering-Israeli civilians hit by Hezbollah rockets, Lebanese civilians hit by Israeli bombs-the reality is far different. More than 200 Lebanese have been killed and a billion dollars worth of damage inflicted on their country, compared to 24 Israelis killed, nearly half of them soldiers killed in combat against Hezbollah fighters.

Many Lebanese say the failure of the international community to resolve the crisis in their country is worsening the situation.

From Bush Ally To Victim of US Bombs

San Francisco Bay Area, 20.07.2006 20:39

On July 18th, Israeli war planes struck Lebanese army targets in an overnight raid in which 11 troops, including four officers, were killed and 40 injured. The target wasn't a Hizbullah barracks, it was the regular Lebanese army, which Israel says it would trust to patrol the Lebanese border with Israel, and which they wish would take on Hizbullah.

Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora pleaded for an immediate internationally-sanctioned cease-fire on Tuesday, saying the international community must have been aware that Israel was committing massacres against Lebanese civilians, including children, women and elders. He said that Israel was acting to destroy "everything that allows Lebanon to stay alive".

Siniora came to power as part of an anti-Syrian political movement supported by the Bush administration, dubbed by the American press "the Cedar Revolution" and thought by some to be a CIA front. As recently as April of this year George W. Bush said about Siniora:
I told the Prime Minister that the United States strongly supports a free and independent and sovereign Lebanon. We took great joy in seeing the Cedar Revolution. We understand that the hundreds of thousands of people who took to the street to express their desire to be free required courage, and we support the desire of the people to have a government responsive to their needs and a government that is free, truly free . . . We talked about the great tradition of Lebanon to serve as a model of entrepreneurship and prosperity. Beirut is one of the great international cities, and I'm convinced that if Lebanon is truly free and independent and democratic, that Beirut will once again regain her place as a center of financial and culture and the arts.

There's no question in my mind that Lebanon can serve as a great example for what is possible in the broader Middle East; that out of the tough times the country has been through will rise a state that shows that it's possible for people of religious difference to live side-by-side in peace; to show that it's possible for people to put aside past histories to live together in a way that the people want, which is, therefore, to be peace and hope and opportunity.

On July 18th Bush warned Syria to stay out of Lebanon as he signalled to Israel that it would have more time to carry out its military campaign. He said Israel had been asked to ensure that the government of Fouad Siniora survived, but the White House declined to comment on repeated Israeli strikes against Lebanese army units.

Sacramento Green Scare Update: Zachary Jenson Turns Informant

San Francisco Bay Area, 20.07.2006 19:10

Zachary Jenson, arrested along with Lauren Weiner and Eric McDavid on January 13, 2006 in Auburn, CA, agreed on July 18th to cooperate with investigators and plead guilty to USC 18 371 "conspiracy to commit an offense or defraud the United States," in exchange for a lesser sentence. Lauren signed a similar plea agreement on May 30th. Zach, along with Eric and Lauren was originally charged with USC 18 844(n) "conspiracy to destroy property by means of fire or explosives", which held a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison. Sacramento Prisoner Support, the group that was providing the bulk of the support to the trio, has published Zach's plea bargain and issued a statement which calls for the withdrawal of all support for Zachary as he is now joining Lauren in the ranks of those who will testify at the expense of others for their own personal benefit

War in the Middle East While the World is Watching

United Kingdom, 20.07.2006 14:10

For the 9th day in a row, Israeli forces have been bombarding Lebanon. So far more than 300 Lebanese civilians have been killed, over 1,000 wounded and some 500,000 displaced, compared with 29 Israeli deaths (15 civilians) caused by Hizbullah's Katyusha rockets. Reports from Beirut talk of a deserted, devastated city, with residential buildings, roads and bridges being hit by Israeli air strikes. Israel launched attacks on Lebanon after Hezbullah captured two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border raid so as to swap them for the remaining three Lebanese and an undetermined number of Arab prisoners held by Israel. However, the captive soldiers, both in Gaza and Lebanon, have already been deleted from the public agenda. Israeli officials are now talking not about "bringing the soldiers home" but about destroying Hizballah and Hamas, and perhaps Syria and Iran as well, "once and for all." And, apparently, they have got the green light from the US and other international "allies".

Meanwhile in Palestine, Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip continue, again allegedly to free a soldier seized by Palestinian militias on 25 June, whom they have offered to release in exchange for some of the Palestinians imprisoned by Israel. Tens of Palestinian civilians have been killed and many more injured, not to mention the periodic shortages of food, fuel, electricity, water and medicine. Many of those killed were Palestinian civilians, including children, who died during Israeli air force "targeted killings". As well as actual bombing raids, Israeli military airplanes have conducted nightly sonic booming raids over Gaza, with the aim of making the civilian population fearful that actual bombing is under way. In retaliation, Palestinian groups also continue to fire Qassam rockets at Israeli towns [see Human Rights Watch's statement].

Apart from the mass destruction of civilian infrastructure, there are reports that Israeli forces have been using internationally banned weapons, such as phosphorus incendiary bombs and vacuum bombs, both in Gaza and in Lebanon.

Although still small in scale, there have been a few protests against the continuing Israeli attacks on Lebanon and Gaza throughout the world. On 18 June, several hundred people demonstrated in Parliament Square in London. National-wide demonstrations have been called for July 22nd by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Stop the War Coalition and various Muslim organisations. Earlier this month, protesters blockaded EDO MBM in Brighton, which makes electrical weapons components for the Israeli military. [see also "Boycott Israeli Goods" National Day of Action].

90 Days later - Workers unite at Parliament!

Aotearoa, 20.07.2006 12:09

Close to 2000 workers rallied at Parliament today to protest against National MP Wayne Mapp's 90 Day probation bill. "Continuous rain didn't stop unionists protesting in Parliament grounds today. They came by the busload, mostly EPMU workers but also a few SFWU, AUS, PPTA, Dairy worker, NDU and others. There were also quite a few school kids, interested members of the public and a colourful street theatre effort by anarchists acting as National supporters." [ Report by Don Franks ] The Wildcat Anarchist Collective distributed a leaflet in which they point out that "National and Labour are very similar; they just differ in their tactics. National would like to strip workers of many of their rights, and propose 'work for the dole' schemes for those not working. Labour prefers to deny or reduce benefits like it did with 'Jobs Jolt' and appears to be proposing with the Single Core Benefit, or the corporate welfare of the 'Working for Families' package which is taking the pressure off employers to pay a living wage." [ Leaflet ] There will be a rally and march in Christchurch this Saturday (Victoria Square, 12 noon) and a rally in Auckland next month (23rd August, 12:30pm, Aotea Square). Time to ORGANISE!
