Bush seeks to extend Guantánamo procedures to American citizens

Portland, 02.08.2006 00:38

In draft legislation prepared in response to last month's Supreme Court decision against the use of military tribunals for US prisoners at Guant?namo Bay, the Bush administration proposes to extend the practice of indefinite detention and summary trial by military commissions to include American citizens.

According to press accounts Friday, based on leaks from those with access to the draft, the bill would essentially legalize the military tribunals in the form decreed by Bush in 2001, with only minor changes, while for the first time making US citizens as well as foreign nationals subject to such summary proceedings.

Proposed Law Would Allow Gov't to Indefinitely Detain U.S. Citizens

A note to Portland from Josh Harper

Portland, 02.08.2006 00:38

To all my Portland friends and supporters,

I've been trying to find a way to thank all of you for your hard work on my behalf, but after two months all my efforts have come up short. I don't know what I could ever say that would properly express my gratitude so I hope you forgive this inadequate attempt.

For those of you who have not heard, my lawyer's fee has now been paid in full. This was no easy task, and it would not have happened without you friendly PDX folks. Seriously, no other community worked harder to help me out and I'll never forget it. All of the time you spent on organizing and attending benefits for me is amazing. I want you to know that those bake sales, rummage sales, spaghetti dinners, eBay auctions, movie nights, and other events really kept me going through a depressing time and that the money earned is giving me a fighting chance to beat this conviction on appeal. I guess now is as good of a time to announce this as any other. The outpouring of assistance and moral support from you PDXers has made me decide that I'll be moving to Portland upon my release from prison.

Third Death Procession Successful

Boston, 02.08.2006 00:08

On Monday, July 31, six Boston-area locals helped spread the word to other community members (and tourists) about the biolab and the dangers it poses to residents and visitors to our city. Unlike previous awareness-raising events by Operation: Over, this time participants also held a banner reading "Oppose the BU Biolab" at busy intersections (below). The event began at 4pm at the Park Street T Stop, proceeded down Tremont, stopped on the corner with Boylston (displaying the banner), continued to Copley where the banner was brought out again. By 7pm people had gone their separate ways, though one participant continued flyering back to Park Street.

The Oregonian Gazes Into the Blood on its Own Hands

Portland, 01.08.2006 13:08

I walked past a news stand this morning, to see that the front page of the Oregonian is smattered with the innocent blood being poured out over Lebanon. In the photograph, a man is walking through rubble, an expression of intense despair on his face, and a dead child in his arms. A child.

And on the radio, I heard a horror story from the front lines over there. I heard an eye witness describe all the little children lovingly laid out upon the ground. All dead. She described one little baby, whom she said still had a pacifier pinned to his dusty little shirt. Oh my God.

Oh my God.

Does anyone else feel overwhelmed?

Have you ever heard the sound of an approaching avalanche? Well, I don't suppose you have, or chances are you wouldn't be reading this right now, and I haven't either -- at least not literally. But in a metaphorical sense I can hear one right now. In fact, I started hearing the first few rocks tumble down the mountain about a decade ago. I shrugged it off though (most people didn't even pay attention).

Yeah, that Waco and Ruby Ridge were some dirty business. Yeah, it sure looks like Vince Foster and Ron Brown were murdered. Well, politics gets dirty sometimes. It's always been that way, hasn't it?

Hmmm ... the protests in Seattle were really getting somewhere and then *boom* -- there was a media blackout. The only way I could find out they were shooting rubber bullets at people was by checking out this new website called Indymedia. And there it was -- a cop aiming a rifle into the crowd.

Eugene Food Not Bombs Needs Help!

Portland, 01.08.2006 10:38

Eugene Food Not Bombs, aka Food Not White Supremecist Capitalist Imperialist Patriarchy, is currently looking for new people and houses to cook food. Since September 2005, the same collective has been providing free vegan meals every Sunday from 3-5 pm next to the Deer Mural in the Washington Jefferson Park. FNB usually feeds about 30-50 people each week, and we don't want this to stop! However, many of the people who have been bottom lining the project are now in the process of moving, or leaving Eugene altogether. The current collective will soon no longer has the infrastructure nor energy to keep cooking, so we're looking for folks to take on responsibility for the project.

The plant was shut down by PGE in 1993 following years of crisis and a large and growing citizen backlash.

GMO Disease Epidemics

Tryptophan -- A food supplement called Tryptophan had been produced for many years by various companies, including Showa Denko of Japan. These companies had been producing Tryptophan with the usual ingredients without ill effects. Then, Showa Denko, to increase profits, gene-spliced (genetically engineered) a bacterium into the previously harmless product. Result: 37 dead and 1,535 crippled. Another estimated 5,000-10,000 were afflicted with a blood disorder due to this new, strange and incurable disease (now called Eosinophilia Myalgia Syndrome, EMS). The corporation paid out two billion dollars to people who threatened to sue. [ read more ]

Hepatitis B Vaccine -- The Hepatitus B vaccine was genetically engineered. On account of this vaccine, during the 1990s there were, in the USA alone, more than 17,000 cases of hospitalisations, injuries and deaths, including the deaths of 72 children, reported to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) of the U.S. government. [Dr. Philip Incao's testimony to the Health Committee of the Ohio House of Representatives, 1 March 1999] Note: a former FDA (U.S. government Food and Drug Administration) Commissioner wrote in 1993 in the prestigious medical journal, JAMA, that a study showed "only about 1 percent of serious events attributable to drug reactions are reported to the FDA". Aspartame artificial sweetener -- This artificial sweetener bears no resemblance to 'saccharin' and 'sucaryl'. A well-known carcinogenic neurotoxin, Aspartame has been linked to cancer, paralysis, blindness, diabetes, cardiac arrest, not to mention death. In the United States, where the New Mexico legislature is currently discussing a proposal to ban Aspartame, the neurotoxin is found in 6,000 products consumed by 70% of Americans. A bill to ban aspartame is currently in the British Parliament also, sponsored by Roger Williams MP. [ read more ]

Critical Mass or Critical Mob -- July Report

San Diego, 01.08.2006 09:08

A group of people calling themselves San Diego Critical Mass rode through the streets of San Diego on Friday, July 28. The ride was characterized by self-focused jubilation, sexism, racism, danger, agression, hostile confrontations, and a police crackdown.

Although this ride resembles Critical Mass, I believe that ultimately it has little in common with the original concept of Critical Mass. The route is dictated by the same few, loud, controlling individuals, who also take every opportunity to spread out thinly and block motorized traffic, create violent confrontations with motorists, and invite crackdown from the police. The rides have nearly no outreach activity.

I can see that many cyclists enjoy themselves on the ride, and there is a palpable buzz among the cyclists. But the energy is one of self-focused aggression. Aggression for the sake of aggression. In other words, it's a mob. Its political philosophy mirrors that of the dominant US culture: Us-vs.-them, You're-either-with-us-or-against-us, Might-makes-right. There is no sense of outreach, sympathy, advocacy or democracy; little concern for safety; nor respect for all human beings. The ride is a Critical Mob, not a Critical Mass.

But I don't think it has to be that way.

They hope to move beyond the narrow confines of marriage politics as they exist in the United States today. They have written a statement, in which they outline the principles that they believe should influence strategies, and they want more people to sign on to show their endorsement of the statement.

Bigots Bash Queers Outside SD Pride Festival

San Diego, 01.08.2006 06:39

Three bigots attacked five queers with a baseball bat and knife following the corporate pride festival in balboa park saturday evening. Three queers were hospitalized, one with a fractured skull. Asshole in chief of san diego, jerry sanders, stated that the attack was "an isolated incident and clearly not the attitude of our citizenry." An easy statement for a white straight male lapdog of the elite jerk with a bodyguard to make. Any visible queer knows that the "citizenry" has little toleration for those who refuse to publicly assimilate to the heterosexual norm, except as oddball freaks for their occasional amusement.

It's time for us queers to stop paying assimilationist protection money to the corporate-controlled mobsters, who will allow the bigots to do just enough damage to scare us into submission, and instead take responsibility for our community's own protection.

West Papua: The Hidden Pacific Conflict

Aotearoa, 31.07.2006 22:39

#media_7430;left# Seminar on West Papua: The Hidden Pacific Conflict An Indonesian Human Rights Committee (IHRC) organised seminar is being held at AUT University between 18 and 19 August 2006. West Papua, New Zealand's Pacific neighbour, has been under Indonesian rule since 1963. At least 100,000 people have died in the ongoing resistance struggle. In Australia, West Papua is on the agenda because 43 West Papuan Asylum seekers became the focus of a diplomatic row between Jakarta and Canberra but the issues remain largely unknown in New Zealand. Wantok Pacific, Papua Merdeka! Pacific Unity and West Papua | Conference Website | PMA resources on West Papua | Indonesian Human Rights Campaign "The crimes committed against the people of West Papua are some of the most shameful of the past years. The Western powers have much to answer for, and at the very least should use their ample means to bring about the withdrawal of the occupying Indonesian army and termination of the shameful exploitation of resources and destruction of the environment and the lives and societies of the people of West Papua, who have suffered far too much." Areas in Davis sprayed with pesticide with no timely, advanced warning

San Francisco Bay Area, 31.07.2006 19:39

Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District (SYMVCD) sprayed portions of Davis with the pesticide 'Suspend SC' without timely warning to residents in area, including Arroyo Park, West Area, Drainage, and the cemetery this past week.

According to Stop West Nile Spraying Now (SWNSN), the effectiveness of adulticide spraying to prevent West Nile disease questionable at best. The group is also concerned about the harmful effects on people and animals. In the press release put forth by SWNSN on July 25th, the group stated"... there are known risks to humans from the pesticides being sprayed, and people with asthma and immune-compromised systems are especially at risk..." Additionally, the group is concerned about the lack of warning to residents of Davis.

SYMVCD held a press conference today to announce the results from the first spraying, and its future plans to exterminate all mosquitos in the Yolo/Sacramento county area

Civilians Massacred in Qana as UN and Israel Refuse To Stop Attacks

Israeli war planes scored a direct hit on a building in the Shiite village of Qana where destitute farming folk, including old people, women and children, had taken refuge in the basement from Israeli bombing raids. At least 54 died, as bodies are pulled from the rubble. 19 children are confirmed dead and another 11 are thought still to be in the basement. The Israelis say they had pamphleted the region demanding that all civilians leave, and high Israeli officials have openly said that anyone who remains is fair game.

PDX Impeachment Actions for Week of July 30

Portland, 31.07.2006 10:08

We've been bannering, posting fliers, petitioning, and putting the impeachment resolution before City and County Commissioners. Plus lobbying Oregon's Congressional delegation to join David Wu and 36 other co-sponsors of the House bill that will start impeachment proceedings immediately: Rep. John Conyers' HR 635. And all these deeds just earned "ink" earlier this week from the national impeachment movement (

One action—now—is to bring your homemade impeach sign to Monday's evening rush hour and join our bannering/flash-mobbing crew staging this week's rally at 13th and SW Clay Streets from 4:30-6 p.m. The din of all those horns/cheers and seeing all those thumbs-up/waves says most of the Portland area is for impeachment—and will lift your spirits immensely as you show the folks that impeachment's really possible.

Queer Pride Events in San Diego

San Diego, 31.07.2006 07:38

San Diego held its 37th annual LGBT [Queer] Pride celebration July 28-30, and while most of the speeches, parade floats and festival booths were assimilationist, parts of the celebration did hearken back to the radical, liberationist roots of Queer pride. Rev. Troy Perry, founder of the Metropolitan Community Church, dominated the July 28 rally, though his sermon-like speech which opened the July 28 pride rally was nearly equaled by the heartfelt poem read by San Francisco-based Queer African-American rapper Juba Kalamba as a memorial to his friend, AIDS activist Rocky Williams, who committed suicide July 24 after he became homeless when he could no longer afford San Francisco's astronomical rents.

the tragic songs are already available for those preparing reports about new writing needs to be done, the old lyrics continue to apply. just pick up a record of lebanese singer fairouz from 20 years ago, put it on the phonograph, and you will hear the words describing, in sorrowful, tragic tones, what is happening again today. even the towns and villages where the massacres occurred back then as israeli forces invaded, led by the 'fearless' general ariel sharon, who had no problem wiping out villages full of civilians for the sake of the 'security of israel'......are the same villages being wiped out today, over and over and over and over again.

piles of bodies.....children, parents, grandparents.......the images are not new, for the people of lebanon......1978, 1982, 1996, 2000....and now, 2006......

Stop the Killing in Lebanon, Palestine and Israel

Portland, 31.07.2006 07:38

Here today Pioneer Square heard a different story than it heard Wednesday when a pro Israel rally was held. Yet, strong similarites exist. Both sides lament their dead, both sides voice their grievances, both sides are human beings reacting with pain, agony and horror at the loss of innocent life.

And this is the kernal of truth in this raw and seemingly never ending odyssy of tears, death and ongoing promises of revenge. While a few soldiers are dying, the people are dying in much larger numbers; sons, daughters, fathers mothers lay hemmoraging and dismembered in the rubble of bombs and missiles lauched from a safe distance. And those who survive are left to dig through that rubble for their loved ones, for pieces of their lives, and struggle to master their rising fear, hatred and despair. [ read more ]

AUDIO FILE: Speakers From the Peace in the Middle East Rally

About 500 people gathered to condemn the actions of Israel whose military incursions have killed a large number of civilians in their efforts to root out Hezbollah from Southern Lebanon. The Square was packed with signs calling for an end to the bombing in Gaza and Lebanon, descrying the lethargic response of the U.S. and much of the world community, and demanding an immediate cease fire and a genuine effort to support peaceful solutions.

All speakers brought their personal fire and a sense of justice to the podium. Each spoke passionately for the innocent Lebanese people suffering and dying at the hands of the Israeli army and air force, all supplied with American weapons. This file is about 40 minutes in length, each speaker speaking briefly and powerfully. [ read more ]

Oregon Zoo Lies, & So Does KGW

Pet, the elephant that Oregon Zoo is about to put down, is about 51. KGW blandly reported that elephants usually live to be about 44, lazily spreading the Zoo's calculated lie. Elephants may average around 44 in zoos, but it would've taken the reporter twenty seconds to learn on the 'net that Asian elephants normally live to be 80 in the wild & in sanctuaries. I hate the way this "culture" treats animals. I also hate liars. I also hate bogus reporters. So here's yet another example of how corrupt everything is.

Poop Scoop Clackamas County Dog Control

Portland, 31.07.2006 06:38

Cody - a healthy 14 month old Golden Retriever - frightened by fireworks - ran away from his home and his people around 10 p.m. on July 22. Unfortunately for Cody he was not wearing any identification when he was found by a West Linn cop - transported to Clackamas County Dog Control (CCDC) and placed in an inside kennel around 11 p.m. the same night.

According to Dow Hokoana - a field supervisor for CCDC - two shelter employees found Cody at 9:30 the following morning "surrounded by an abundance of diarrhea." Did they immediately seek medical attention for Cody who was obviously in a crisis situation at this point? Of course not ..... remember this is Clackamas County Dog Control! Instead they waited another hour and a half and then moved him to an outside exercise area where the temperatures were around 90 degrees. They left him there while they returned inside to clean kennels and care for other dogs.

When Cody's guardians arrived at the shelter an hour later he was still outside .... UNCONSCIOUS - the temperature had risen to 92 and the young Golden Retriever was dying.
