Missione Civile Internazionale per il Libano

Switzerland, 03.08.2006 11:37

G8 2006 in St. Petersburg: "Kein ruhiges Gipfeltreffen!"

Germany, 03.08.2006 10:39

Update on Jeff Free Luers in the hole

Portland, 03.08.2006 03:09

Jeff is still in the hole; please continue to write to him!

We have received some updated information on Jeff's situation. He is still in the hole (solitary segregation). He was given a urinalysis (drug test) and the results were "too clean" so they gave him two more tests and both came up negative for drugs. He has still not had a hearing and his situation has been put "under investigation". At this point he is scheduled to remain in the hole until at least August 20th.

If they find him guilty, Jeff will lose his contact visits for a year. This means he will only be able to see his family and friends from behind glass. And, the visits will be limited to one hour, and may be limited to only a certain number per week. He also faces a $100 fine. His attorney is in contact with prison officials and we will continue to update you as we hear more.

Jeff still needs your letters of support, so please continue writing to him. It takes him a little longer to receive his mail but he is able to receive a stack of letters at a time. He has also requested some reading materials. If you are interested in purchasing a book for him (must by new and mailed directly from the publisher or Amazon.com) please contact us directly for a book title off the list he has requested. We are hoping to have books ordered THIS WEEK (by August 5th).

Stop the Bombing of Lebanon Protest (Photo Essay)

Boston, 02.08.2006 23:09

Several hundred Lebanese-Americans, religious leaders and concerned citizens gathered in Copley square Friday for a demonstration demanding an immediate end of the humanitarian and economic catastrophe in Lebanon as a result of Israel’s bombing and invasion of the country. Supporters lined the streets waving red and white Lebanese flags and holding signs and banners denouncing Israeli aggression and killing of civilians. A heavy storm moved in halfway through the rally but most of the demonstrators stood their ground singing, chanting and dancing in the pouring rain.

Critically ill AIDS Patient Evicted for No Reason

Santa Cruz, CA, 02.08.2006 22:38

Donna Deiss writes: Shane is a critically ill AIDS patient who has lived at the Riverview Apartments for five years in Santa Cruz but his name was never put on the lease. The landlord is evicting us on the basis of a very minor fire from a candle although they do not admit any reason. Any tenant can be evicted for any reason without cause in Santa Cruz County. Rent control has failed here four times. The Tenants Rights Union of Santa Cruz County has one remaining member, me, a 58 years old disabled marine pipefitter and caregiver for Shane. I won an Unlawful Detainer against the owner in 1997 due to retaliation for my tenants rights activities. The landlord gave us no warning and will not listen to us prefering to trust Santa Cruz Property Management which has harrassed us and used housing discrimination practices against us. A previous resident manager admits they have been looking for an excuse to evict me for a long time. Read more

Josh Wolf Jailed For Refusal to Hand Over Video of Protest

United States, 02.08.2006 19:37

Josh Wolf was taken into custody on August 1st after a 9am court hearing. He was found to be in contempt for exercising his first amendment rights and refusing to provide a federal grand jury with video footage he shot at the SF G8 protest last summer. He could be held until the grand jury expires next July. A press conference was held outside of City Hall at 1pm, and at 2:00pm, the SF Board of Supervisors was to vote on a resolution in support of Josh's case. The National Lawyers Guild (NLG) believes that the grand jury is being improperly used to obtain materials which would normally be protected under California's Reporter Shield Law. Sizzling Strike Action on Merseyside!

United Kingdom, 02.08.2006 17:08

With the scorching heat of another climate chaos summer very much upon us, what better time to air your genuine grievances and take strike action or protest against the bosses?

Many workers on Merseyside are making the most of the weather and getting out into the streets. Their causes are varied, but in each case they are fighting back against attempts to get more work out of people for less money. This is a battle that is being fought in every single workplace, so every wage slave should be organising amongst their colleagues for better pay and conditions. Together we are stronger than the bosses. United, the workers will never be defeated! Divided, we fall!

Here is a journal sent from Hanady Salman, editor of the Lebanese paper As-Safir.....
I feel I could have written it myself.
"We write the news while crying", she says.
hey, aren't we reporters supposed to be able to 'separate themselves' from their story....de-personalize it? I mean, we're supposed to be 'objective', "not take sides"....

somehow though.....we just can't keep from crying.

Qana Massacre Protested at State Department Rally

Portland, 02.08.2006 08:38

Washington, D.C. - It was steamy at "Foggy Bottom," the site of the U.S. State Department's headquarters, on Monday, July 31, 2006, near the campus of George Washington U., at 23rd and C St. (NW). The noon time heat and high humidity were only a part of it. It even got hotter as the passionate speakers/chanters ripped into the U.S. Secretary of State, Condi Rice; the Bush-Cheney Gang; and the ongoing wrongs of Zionist Israel in Lebanon. They were there to demand a ceasefire in Lebanon and to protest the Qana Massacre. The sponsors for the rally were Arab-American and Peace groups. It was attended by about 100 demonstrators.

Background: The Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) targeted for bombing a shelter at Qana (Cana), in Southern Lebanon on Sunday, July 30, 2006. The air strike cost the lives of 56 civilians, most of them children. The Israelis' lame excuse that it was "a mistake," rang hollow, especially coming after the recent IOF's attack on a UN outpost at Khiyam, also in Southern Lebanon, that took the lives of four unarmed observers. Media reports indicate the bomb used at Khiyam, a precision-guided U.S.-made weapon, was the identical kind employed at Qana. (1) Qana (or Cana) is also the same village the IOF viciously shelled on April 18, 1996, killing 110 civilians, many of them women and children. (2)

Global Warming: Cascadia’s possible future

Portland, 02.08.2006 08:38

Many people I know who live in the Portland area and the Willamette Valley think that as the sea levels rise we will be immune to the drastic changes. Some believe that only those living on seaboards will be displaced. However, as Gore's docu-movie and others point out. Not only are the ice caps melting but the tundra is melting (think permafrost). A huge body of fresh water is about to be released into ground water, streams and rivers, lakes, and the atmosphere. How will this affect people in the Cascadia? Aside from the affect on weather a great deal of underground water is about to be released into the biosphere. According to several sources, anyone in low-lying areas will be affected. And, people in high lying areas will find it hard to find potable water. Some say that the super-fund sites and chemical dumps that have been contained along rivers and streams and underground vaults (think the Umatilla Chemical Depot in Hermiston, Oregon or the areas of the Willamette River around North Portland) will add high level pollution to this released water. Beyond the discussion of pollution, there needs to be a discussion about water borne disease and increasing and changing insect populations.

Photos from the Lebanon/Palestine Rally

Portland, 02.08.2006 08:38

On Sunday I was greeted by more than 500 supporters of Lebanon and Palestine in what proved to be an amazing day of solidarity on this front. I managed to take lots of pictures including a couple of the TWO counter=protesters who were attempting to incite physical altercations...

The speeches said it all, Israel is occuping Lebanon and HAS been occupying Gaza for FAR too long. THe Anti US government sentiment was shared by Muslim, Christian, Jew and Rebel alike. It was shocking to me to see and HEAR so many voices coming together. When they had the rally a couple of weeks ago, things were relatively quiet, but not today. Voices were raised and they were raised with anger. I was a bit worried about my sign decrying the US and Israel as the new 3rd Reich, but those worries were soon aliviated when I saw the COUNTLESS signs comparing both countries to Nazi Germany. Nobody can deny the comparison. [ read more ]

Photos of the Rally against Israel's war crimes

About 1000 people were at a rally on July 30 in downtown Portland to condemn Israel's war crimes against civilians in Lebanon and Gaza.

Many of the protest signs and the speakers articulated these messages: our horror, outrage and condemnation of Israel's merciless and unrelenting killing of civilians (especially the children!) in Lebanon and Gaza; an immediate ceasefire; an end to Israeli occupation in both countries; justice and peace for the Lebanese and Palestinian people.

There was a palpable sadnesss in the air for as people sang and spoke about their love and support for Lebanon and Palestine, we all knew that these countries were/are still being destroyed, and more people are dying as Israel's war crimes and terrorism continue, with US money and complicity. Society and Ecology: Murray Bookchin Dies

San Diego, 02.08.2006 08:08

The libertarian socialist, anti-capitalist thinker, activist and founder of the Social Ecology school Murray Bookchin died on Sunday. See an obituary at nyc indymedia here.

From the Anarchist Archives, Bootkin's essay Society and Ecology:
The problems which many people face today in "defining" themselves are by no means personal ones. These problems exist not only for private individuals; they exist for modern society as a whole. We suffer not only as individuals from alienation and confusion over our identities and goals; our entire society, conceived as a single entity, seems unclear about its own nature and sense of direction. If earlier societies tried to foster a belief in the virtues of cooperation and caring, thereby giving an ethical meaning to social life, modern society fosters a belief in the virtues of competition and egotism, thereby divesting human association of all meaning--except, perhaps, as an instrument for gain and mindless consumption.

We live under the constant threat that the world of life will be irrevocably undermined by a society gone mad in its need to grow--replacing the organic by the inorganic, soil by concrete, forest by barren earth, and the diversity of life-forms by simplified ecosystems; in short, a turning back of the evolutionary clock to an earlier, more inorganic, mineralized world that was incapable of supporting complex life-forms of any kind, including the human species.

Whatever has turned human beings into "aliens" in nature are social changes that have made many human beings "aliens" in their own social world. The domination of the young by the old, of women by men, and of men by men. Until society can be reclaimed by an undivided humanity that will use its collective wisdom, cultural achievements, technological innovations, scientific knowledge, and innate creativity for its own benefit and for that of the natural world, all ecological problems will have their roots in social problems.

Heat wave Takes Toll on Livestock, Crops

San Francisco Bay Area, 02.08.2006 06:10

Parts of California's Central Valley endured 10 days or more in a row of temperatures in excess of 100 degrees in mid-July. Some 100 people perished in the heat, the majority of them senior citizens whose bodies don't cool themselves as well as younger people. Thousands of animals died on farms: over a million "pounds" of poultry, and thousands of cows, primarily dairy cows. Extra-hot temperatures, growth in the state's $5 billion dairy industry, and fewer rendering plants to dispose of the animals combined to cause a crisis for farmers in the state.

Fidel Castro's Health Forces Him to Step Down, Temporarily

San Francisco Bay Area, 02.08.2006 02:38

Cuban President Fidel Castro handed over power for the first time in his nearly 50 years at the head of the Caribbean island nation on July 31st. A recent trip to Argentina, as well as the July 26th celebration of the anniversary of the assault on the Moncada barracks, have taken a toll on the 79 year-old man's health. Castro was forced to undergo emergency surgery to correct intestinal bleeding and was reportedly recovering on Tuesday night. Castro "provisionally" delegated his presidential duties to his brother, for what Fidel predicted would be a period of several weeks.

Yvon Neptune Released from Prison to Seek Medical Care

San Francisco Bay Area, 02.08.2006 01:39

After more than two years in prison and a fifteen month hunger-strike, former Haitian Prime Minister Yvon Neptune was freed in order to seek medical treatment on Thursday, July 27th. Neptune is one of the most high profile political prisoners who have been detained by the U.S.-backed interim government in Haiti. He was jailed shortly after the 2004 coup that ousted Haitian President Jean Bertrand Aristide. The intermittent hunger strike has taken a heavy toll on the 59 year-old former Prime Minister's health.

HURRY - STOP the National Security Surveillance Act, S. 2453

Portland, 02.08.2006 00:38

Senator Arlen Specter's solution for the President's refusal to obey U.S. law requiring warrants for wiretapping Americans is to change the pesky law in order to make the President's warrantless wiretapping program legal. He is now trying to pass the National Security Surveillance Act, S. 2453. We Need To Stop This!

So far this has happened -- SAN FRANCISCO - The Bush administration appealed a court decision Monday that allowed a lawsuit to go forward challenging the president's warrantless domestic spying program.

In rejecting government claims that the suit could expose state secrets and jeopardize the war on terror, U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker ruled July 20 that the eavesdropping was so widely reported there appears to be no danger of spilling secrets. Walker also said he did not see how allowing the lawsuit to continue could threaten national security. Walker is the only judge to rule against the government's claim of a "state secrets privilege."

And this is where I as well as BORDC are asking everyone to contact their Senators now and at the very latest by Aug 2!
