After 70 years since the coup d'état that unleashed in Civil War, It's time to make justice?

During 20th Century numerous countries have lived through wars and dictatorial and authoritarian periods, but later, once advanced into democracy, they've made, one way or another, a revision, amends and justice towards the victims of these regimes and towards society as a whole. Spanish State, with one of the most long and authoritarian regime, is still behind many other countries like Argentina or Chile which suffered similar regimes later. May it not be that the alleged model transition, the gradual entry into democracy and a beautiful title for a law made us forget that justice must be done, historic memory must be recovered, fascism's remains must vanish from our towns and that it must be compensated the suffering of the victims of a terrifying dictatorship as was Francoism.

To make justice it's also needed to recover historic memory without cutbacks: Flat No to the Spanish government's law " Verguenza Histórica" (Historic Shame) ::: annoyance and disappointment in the comisión por la dignidad (commission for dignity) front the bill made public by Spanish government ::: request for the Francoism summary trials to be overturned and justice made ::: Ariadna Pi tribute to July 1936's fighters

N.E.S.T. finds 35 red tree vole nests in S.O

Rogue Valley, 07.08.2006 10:39

The Northwest Ecosystem Survey Team (N.E.S.T.) has been surveying in southern Oregon in three timber sales: Tennesse Lime, Anderson West and East Fork. We found 35 previously undiscovered red tree vole nests, when verified by the Bureau of Land Management, these nests will require protection that will lead to the reduction of these timber sales to the possible cancellation of certain timber sale units.
N.E.S.T. is going to continue it's surveys and we need new volunteers to continue this work.

AUDIO FILE: BRING THE SALMON HOME

Portland, 07.08.2006 10:38

On August 2, 2006 Native tribes who depend upon the salmon runs of the Klamath River for both subsistence and ceremony held a Rally in Portland Oregon to demonstrate the necessity that the dams on this river be removed.

The Rally began at Holladay park, near Lloyd Center. Arriving a little late I missed speakers, but caught the tail end of one impassioned speech by an Indigenous man. "We're fish people, we're people of the Klamath River; we were honored when we were born. Now it's time for us to give something back and honor the resource, and more importantly, honor the children. I want to say something about the Klamath tribes of Oregon. These guys have not seen salmon since 1917, and that's a travesty."

Interview with peace activist Brian Willson

Portland, 07.08.2006 10:38

On August 11th, 2006, The Veterans for Peace are holding their annual national conference in Seattle, Washington. One of the states goals of the VfP is to abolish as an instrument of national policy. Recognizing the links between the necessity of war to maintain the "status quo" of oil consumption and the United States Empire to the implausibility of reaching sustainability, Brian Willson and a number of other Veterans for Peace and peace activists are headed to Seattle, sans the fossil fuels.

Starting in Eugene, Oregon, the Veterans Human-Powered Ride for Peace and Sustainability is touring on bicycle and bio-diesel fuel to promote awareness of alternatives to oil, and the need to create more environmentally sound and sustainable lifestyles. While the tour visit Olympia, Washington, Free Radio Olympia dj Rhino caught up with Brian Willson to discuss the tour, Veterans for Peace, and sustainability.

TEL AVIV : thousands against the war

Portland, 07.08.2006 10:38

A young man mounted the podium. "My name is Zohar Milgrom. I am 26 years old, an activist in Yesh Gvul. I have got an emergency call up up order. Tomorrow I have to show up at the army and get sent to Lebanon. I will go there to declare that I am refusing. This is the only thing I can do in face of the public silence, in face of the war crimes committed in our name, in face of the leaders who have sent soldiers again into the Lebanese swamp. I will dedicate my time of imprisonment to all the people who suffer in this war, the Jews and the Arabs, the Israelis and Lebanese and Palestinians, to stopping the madness and saving their lives. Before I finish I would like to read to you the words of my friend, Isma'il abd-el Hal of Gaza, who would have liked to stand here in Tel-Aviv and address you, were it possible. This is what he asked me to tell you: Stop this war now! This war is the mother of terrorists and extremists! We are all in danger! We have to struggle together, to end this horror, to live together in peace, in two states!"

After he went down, to the sound of applause, a Yesh Gvul speaker announced a solidarity demonstration for next Saturday outside Military prison 6 at Atlit - where refusing Captain Amir Pester has been for more than week and where Milgrom will probably soon join him.

"Stop this War!" - Protests across Aotearoa

Aotearoa, 07.08.2006 08:39

#media_7481;left#There have been demonstrations across Aotearoa as the Israeli war machine inflicts more and more casualties in Lebanon and Palestine. With the death toll in Lebanon estimated at up to seven hundred and fifty and no end in sight to this war, New Zealanders are mobilsing to demand that Israel end its agression immediately so that no more innocent people on both sides of the conflict die.

In Auckland around 300 people braved pouring rain to hold a lively march and rally to call for an end to US and Israeli imperialism in the Middle East. Demonstrators staged a die-in at the US consulate before burning US and Israeli flags. Report

In Wellington a few hundred protestors marched down Lambton Quay to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade as part of a Wellington Palestine Group protest to demand that the government not allow Israel to reopen its embassy in New Zealand until such time as Israel has ceased hostilities, demolished the separation wall, withdrawn from occupied territory and fulfilled its international law obligations on Palestinian refugees. Report

In Dunedin an emergency demonstration against the war attracted 250-300 people who marched on the Octagon via Labour MP Pete Hodgson's office and called on the government not to resume any military joint-training exercises with the USA (something Winston Peters was trying desperately to secure on his latest trip to Washington DC). Report

The National Distribution Union who represent packing and distribution workers in New Zealand has condemned the Israeli air strike on a Lebanese fruit-packing warehouse that killed 33 farm workers. [ Media Release ] A group called 'Aotearoa Jews for Justice' says they stand "in solidarity with the Lebanese and Palestinian people suffering at the hands of the Israeli army. [...] We draw from a long tradition of Jews who have campaigned for social justice and against racism and colonialism regardless of where it has occurred."

The 61st Hiroshima Day

United Kingdom, 06.08.2006 19:08

61 years ago on 6th August 1945 the first nuclear bomb, "Little Boy", a uranium bomb, was dropped on a civilian target, the city of Hiroshima in Japan, 3 days later on 9th August "Fat Man", a plutonium bomb, was dropped on the city of Nagasaki. These Americian acts of genocide, which killed as many as 210,000 people, were unnecessary and were designed "to kick-start the Cold War rather than end the Second World War".

CND (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament) in the UK have shown that 59% opposes the replacement of Trident, Britian's submarine-launched nuclear ICBM (intercontinental ballistic missiles) system. On Friday 5th August protestors handed in 53,000 signatures on a petition to 10 Downing Street calling on the government not to replace Trident or develop any new nuclear weapons system. On Tuesday 2nd August two peace activists were arrested after painting "Trident is Terrorism" outside Faslane naval base. In October Faslane 365 begins — a year-long continuous peaceful blockade at Britain’s Trident nuclear weapons submarine base.

Protests against nuclear weapons are expected to take place around the world, 80 protests have been organised across the USA: To mark the 61st anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, rallies, vigils, teach-ins, and nonviolent protests will be held in more than 60 cities in 24 states across the country to demand an end to nuclear weapons and wars. Antiwar, nuclear abolition and indigenous rights groups are focusing on facilities run by the Bechtel Corporation, one of the world's leading nuclear weapons contractors, war profiteers, and violators of indigenous rights. Activities will take place under the banner: From Hiroshima to Yucca Mountain to the Middle East: No Nukes! No Wars! End War Profiteering! Support Indigenous Rights!

Protests are also expected in Perth and across Europe.

The threat of thermonuclear genocide is now worse than it has been for many years — Bush's war plan includes use of nuclear weapons, Michel Chossudovsky argues that the US plans to use nuclear weapons against Iran and according to Nafeez Mosaddeq Ahmed UK Government sources have confirmed that war with Iran is on. Plans to nuke Iran are totally insane however this might not prevent it happening because "our 'leaders'... are are psychopaths"John Kampfner has reported that At a Downing Street reception not long ago, a guest had the temerity to ask Tony Blair: "How do you sleep at night, knowing that you've been responsible for the deaths of 100,000 Iraqis?" The Prime Minister is said to have retorted: "I think you'll find it's closer to 50,000."

Ardeshir Mehrdad has pointed out that "The struggles of the Iranian people and the peoples of the Middle East against Imperialism and reactionary forces are a struggle that will directly influence the destiny of humanity on our planet. In this battle we will either witness the burial of the architects of the New World order of slavery, and their twin allies in the backward religious movements, or the world will succumb to violence and barbarism. There will be few places left in the world that can remain immune to events in the Middle East."

The Doomsday Clock is ticking away, it has read 7 minutes to midnight since 2002, it is now, perhaps, much closer to midnight...

Cambridge Reaction to the Carnage Inflicted by Israel

United Kingdom, 06.08.2006 16:08

The Israeli wars of aggression in Lebanon and Gaza have been now been going on for almost four weeks and there have been three protests against it in Cambridge. On Friday (28th July), there was a small meeting in The Market Square, which was attended by about 30 people, followed by a larger demo on saturday (150-200 people). [report] Other activists conducted leaflet drops in the Grafton Centre and from Great St Marys Church (leaflet). On Sunday there will be a vigil for the victims of Hiroshima.

Also in the region, it was revealed that US bombs bound for Israel have passed through Suffolk and Norwich people called for a ceasefire

Israel has been targetting civilians, journalists, the UN and ambulances using cluster bombs, depleted uranium munitions, bunker busters via Scotland and a catalogue of other illegal weapons. The USA is the main source of Israeli weapons.

Protests against the Israeli assult on Lebanon

United Kingdom, 06.08.2006 11:09

The Israeli war of agression against Lebanon has been now been going on for almost four weeks and there have been two protests against it in Sheffield, the first one was held on 22nd July and it involved a spontaneous march around the city cente in a downpour and the second was held on 2nd August, it involved a five-minute sit down protest in Pinstone Street and a speech from Jews against Zionism. On 5th August many people from Sheffield attended the London demo against Israeli attacks.

Israel has been targetting civilians, journalists, the UN and ambulances using cluster bombs, depleted uranium munitions, bunker busters flown in via Scotland and a catalogue of other illegal weapons, the USA is the main source of Israeli weapons. According to UNICEF: "Thirty per cent of those who have died are children and 45 per cent of those who are displaced are children".

The capture of two Israeli soliders, which has been used by Israel to justify the attack on Hizballah, has been shown to be a pretext: "Israel's assaults on the Occupied Territories and Lebanon were planned well in advance with the full knowledge and approval of the US." The Israeli government was given the green light to attack Lebanon by the United States and the other states attending the G8 in Russia. The US-Israeli goal for Lebanon appears to be, as a minimum, regime change or worse, total annihilation, as with the wars in Iraq and Afganistain the role of oil appears to be key. Wider Middle East war was predicted at the end of June and the unfolding events appears to be part of an imperialist carve up of the Middle East.

One response, from a branch of the CNT in France has been to say: "Just as we firmly denounce this military escalation, calling for an immediate cease-fire, and an end to the bombings, and withdrawal of Israeli troops from Lebanon and the Occupied Palestinian Territories, we believe, as internationalist workers, that one of our urgent tasks is to support the development of a third camp - the camp of the workers - in the Middle East, at one and the same time against imperialist domination and against Islamist oppression."

QUIT! "While members of the Lebanese queer group Helem are turning their community center into a shelter for refugees, their counterparts in Jerusalem are preparing for a film festival and beach party," said QUIT member Kate Raphael. "What is the message that this sends to the world about what our community cares about?" "Instead of being visible in Jerusalem, partying during an ethnic cleansing, we must be visible in the movements in our home countries calling for freedom and justice for all people."

'Enclosure Of Packers Field Begins'

Bristol, 05.08.2006 15:07

summary Sandra w writes: Trees in Packers field have been fenced off today (3/7/06). This means that construction work is due to begin. Three long years of legal challenge, opposition and protest by local people and other users of the field have been in vain-Packers field will not be saved. Say goodbye to our much loved green space thanks to Bristol City Council and the City Academy's greed. Another green space gone forever. Full Article. Brief Background: For the last three years residents living near to Packers Field (between Eastville, Greenbank and Whitehall) have been fighting to prevent the building of a private sports facility, and retain the field as a public space. Previous Front PageFrom The Comments: Ale writes: I think a lot of the requests of the packers field crew did get listened to so please don't see this as just a failure. As far as I know there is still right of public access, as well as a lot of changes to the plans - so no mega stadium. Still though, land commons being eroded, so you could argue that it's a failure because of yet another win of a big private institution against local people, but then people will just be disheartened and not stand up to this stuff and we won't even get the little bits of access and influence we did get this time... Woodsy writes: Packer's Field is just indicative of how the system is skewed against the local community. Sure, a few concessions have been wrung out of the Academy, but don't be fooled for a moment. There won't be any major changes in the way the planning procedure operates until it is amended so that the community is first asked for its opinions on what they want to see in their area and invitations sent to developers/landowners to implement the community's ideas, i.e. exactly the opposite to what happens now where landowners and developers call the tune. Somehow I can't see that happening. Add Your Comments. (Image: Packers Field Mayday 2006)| Enclosure of packers field begins | www.packersfield.org.uk | Previous Front Page | Contribute An Article
