La memoria de los canallas

Canarias, 11.08.2006 00:09

Conquistas Genocidios y Otras Aberraciones

The Cottage Occupied Social Centre

United Kingdom, 10.08.2006 16:40

A community and youth centre in Sparkbrook, closed by Birmingham City Council last year, has been occupied by a group of activists, who, along with local people, aim to put the building back into community use. The Cottage of Content had been boarded up in May 2005 and scheduled for auction, allegedly for the old occupiers' failure to pay the rent and bills, 22 years after the Council stopped its funding.

Contrary to popular stereotypes about squatters and squats, the occupation was enthusiastically received by local people. A lot of 'neighbours', especially the youth, have been dropping in and attending meetings and workshops.

Whilst building up a campaign to compel the Council to to re-instate the community's youth and community centre, the space is being used, as a social centre, for a wide range of activities, from DIY and educational workshops, screenings and socials, to a meeting place for various grassroots groups. Regular, open meeting are held every Monday at 7:30pm.

NYCLU Sues NYPD for Harassing & Detaining Photographers

NYC, 10.08.2006 12:38

August 7, 2006 -- The New York Civil Liberties Union today expanded a
federal lawsuit to challenge the New York City Police Department's
treatment of photographers and filmmakers. In the amended complaint
filed this morning in United States District Court in Manhattan, the
NYCLU alleged that NYPD officers are unlawfully detaining photographers
and threatening them with arrest if they will not destroy their images
or show them to police officers.

Lieberman’s Defeat and the State of American Politics

NYC, 10.08.2006 12:38

The response of Connecticut Senator Joseph Lieberman and the Democratic Party leadership to Lieberman’s defeat in Tuesday’s Democratic primary election says a great deal about the politics of the Democratic Party and the state of American politics as a whole.

Lieberman, a three-term senator and the Democratic vice presidential candidate in 2000, lost by a 52 to 48 percent margin to Ned Lamont, an heir to the Lamont family fortune and multi-millionaire businessman, who ran as an opponent of the war in Iraq. Trapper Timber Sale

Portland, 10.08.2006 09:38

Despite Judge Pechman's recent ruling that the Bush administration's elimination of the the Survey and Manage Program is illegal, Willamette National Forest Supervisor Dallas Emch and District Ranger Mary Allison refuse to acknowledge the population of threatened red tree voles now known to inhabit the Trapper Timber Sale in the McKenzie River District. Last month N.E.S.T. volunteer climbers documented 30 red tree vole nest trees in the Trapper sale. Some nest trees were subsequently climbed and confirmed by leading scientist Dr. Eric Forsman of Oregon State University, and James Swingle, a Master's student and author of a thesis on red tree vole habitat. Under the Plan each active nest tree would be surrounded by a ten acre buffer, but Forest Service officials have so far refused to modify this controversial Old Growth sale to protect an important food source for the Northern Spotted Owl. LOGGING COULD BEGIN ANY DAY.

Idiotic Sidewalk Closures Illustrate City Hall's Indifference to "The Rest of Us"

Portland, 10.08.2006 09:38

You know, I didn't even really think about the absurdity of all the sidewalk closures in Portland until a friend pointed it out. I mean, it was a hassle, it was inconvenient, and it was often dangerous. I didn't like it, but I just kind of accepted it. I didn't really think about the fact that NO other city I have ever been to allows businesses and construction companies to just block off sidewalks like that until my friend pointed it out. And then suddenly, I realized she was right.

"I Didn’t Want to Remember" -- Reflections on Nagasaki

Portland, 10.08.2006 09:38

"It was kind of awesome to be there," are the words Joseph Mrosko of Pana, Illinois used to describe his tour of duty in Nagasaki, Japan at the end of World War II. Mrosko's job was to photographically record the results of the second atomic blast directed on the Japanese. Today, August 9, marks the anniversary of the Nagasaki bombing.

Owner of a well-established photographic studio in Pana, Mrosko, 59, had been a 2nd Marine Division combat photographer in the Pacific theater before being sent to Nagasaki within two months of the Japanese surrender.

Civilian Resistance in Lebanon

San Diego, 10.08.2006 09:38

Leaving from Martyr's Square in Beiruit, Lebanon on Sat Aug 12 7AM local time, a civilian convoy is to bring supplies such as medicine, food, water to beleagured civilians in the bombed south who are being victimized by the bombing of Lebanon. This movement is being started because no one else, nation or international body, is acting to help these people. The movement is apolitical and doesn't want to be co-opted by any political factions. Their sole intention is to help fellow human beings. By spreading word on the convoy, this will draw international attention to Israel's reaction to the convoy as they risk being shelled en route.

Oakland Residents Seek A Better Oak to Ninth

San Francisco Bay Area, 10.08.2006 06:39

The Oakland City Council recently approved a deal which would sell off the city's waterfront for a low price to a private developer. A BetterOaktoNinth.org is circulating a petition to save the city's waterfront and public space, and must gather all of its signatures by August 17th. The Oak to Ninth Project would wall off the waterfront, demolish the historic Ninth Avenue Terminal, build housing next to I-880, and create yet more traffic congestion. This project was approved in spite of the fact that voters voted in favor of a different plan, the Estuary Policy Plan, in 1999.

Poverty in Boston, What Poverty?

Boston, 09.08.2006 17:08

That’s exactly what an editor for the business section at the Boston Globe said during class at Harvard when I proposed writing a story about the correlation between the rise in crime and poverty in our city. I was dumbfounded and almost answered, “All you have to do is look outside your window,” as I remembered the men standing day after day on the street corners looking for work at my Somerville neighborhood. Then again, I didn’t know where the editor lived and the suburbs isn’t exactly a Boston hub for the homeless. The story idea was shut down, and we both moved on with our privileged lives.

Santa Cruz, CA, 09.08.2006 11:38

On August 9th, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger was un-welcomed to Salinas High School by members of the American Federation of Teachers, Monterey Bay Central Labor Council, Watsonville Brown Berets and other demonstrators. With an escort of police in cruisers and on motorcycles, Schwarzenegger's vehicle drove past a group of protesters and into a back entrance of Salinas High. Police quickly locked out the people who, in the theory of US Democracy, are supposed to be represented by the Governor. Read more and view photos

In the Struggle of Unequals the Anti-War Movement Must Take a Stand

Santa Cruz, CA, 09.08.2006 11:08

Alessandro Tinonga writes: The war against Lebanon is absolutely shocking. According to the BBC, the number of Lebanese casualties may be as high as 900 after nearly four weeks of fighting. Almost one third of the dead are children under the age of 12. Latest UN estimates for displaced people in Lebanon put the figure at between 700,000 and 800,000.

The U.S. shares the responsibility of this aggressive war, because they give Israel nearly $3 billion every year. In 2007, the annual assistance package to Israel is comprised of USD 2.34 billion in military aid, in addition to USD 120 million in standard economic aid. Further, the U.S. government gives political backing it needs to appear 'legitimate'. Not only do they receive unanimous support form the Republican Party, but nearly the same amount of support from the Democrats including 'anti-war' politicians like Howard Dean.

For those of us in the anti-war movement, we must take a stand against the violence being perpetrated against the Lebanese and the Palestinian people. However, there is a clear point of division amongst the anti-war movement: how to address the issue of national liberation. This division manifests itself in many ways ranging from a political statements from major anti-war organizations like United for Peace and Justice, or the hesitancy of some elements of the Santa Cruz anti-war movement to have a united demonstration last Friday against the war. Dismantling the Bomb and Constructing Peace

Santa Cruz, CA, 09.08.2006 10:08

Eight members of the Santa Cruz Weapons Inspection Team (SCWIT) performed a street theatre skit to commemorate the 61st anniversary of the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima, Japan. The group, all dressed in white clothes, assembled at noon on the corner of Pacific Ave and Cooper St. in downrtown Santa Cruz for a dramatized reenactment of the nuclear bombing interspersed with a mock inspection and symbolic dismantling of a Trident II D5 nuclear submarine missile. Audio || Photos

Lockheed Martin, the world's largest weapons contractor, manufactures the Trident II missille and tests its components and subsystems at their 4,400 acre site in Bonny Doon. SCWIT has been trying to raise awareness about the safety of this facility for many years and used the Hiroshima Day event to build for a march on Wednesday, August 9th to the gates of Lockheed Martin. Community members are invited to join a carpool from the Holy Cross Church parking lot at 12:45pm. The march begins at 2:00pm a half mile before the gates to the facility on Empire Grade Road. SCWIT also holds a vigil outside the Bonny Doon Lockheed Martin site on the second Thursday of each month.

Buddhist Peace Fellowship Displays Names of Iraq War Dead

Each year on August 6, many peace activists, commemorate the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima, Japan, with protests & marches. Some use street theatre and satire to bring a message of peace. Others choose a more subtle approach, trying to connect with people on a personal level. One such group is the Buddhist Peace Fellowship of Santa Cruz. Members of the Buddhist Peace Fellowship used the Hiroshima Day anniversary to draw attention to the casualties of the war in Iraq. All day at the corner of Center and Lincoln Streets, the group displayed a three foot tall, hundred foot long, scroll listing 40,000 names of Iraqi civilians killed in the war. There was also a pair of booths created which listed the names, photos, and brief stories, of over 2,000 US and coalition soldiers who also died in the war. Vinny stopped by and chatted briefly with Annie Kelly, a member of the Buddhist Peace Fellowship. Audio || Photos

Resistance to Roadless Logging Escalates as Protesters Blockade Bridge

Portland, 09.08.2006 05:38

Early this morning, protestors erected a daring road blockade to halt logging at the Mike's Gulch Timber Sale in the Siskiyou National Forest, site of the first ever incursion into an Inventoried Roadless Area since the passage of the federal Roadless Rule in 2001. At least one activist is suspended in a cantilever off the side of the Green Bridge above the Illinois River in a manner that prohibits traffic across the bridge without endangering the life of the person hanging from it.

This dramatic action follows years of lawsuits, rallies, public comment periods and national media attention involving tens of thousands of people speaking out against the logging of the Biscuit. Over 2 million people submitted comments to protect our nation's roadless areas before the Biscuit fire and over 20,000 citizens submitted public comments opposing the Biscuit logging when it was proposed, and almost 100 arrests have been made of people engaging in nonviolent civil disobedience protesting the massive logging project.
