Pictures: Massive Turnout for Atlantic Yard Public Hearing

NYC, 24.08.2006 14:38

The public hearing over Bruce Ratner's Development project had little to do with addressing those in power. Instead, roudy supporters faced off with the tempermental opposition. People for the project, mostly Union Laborers and the unemployeed are badly in need of jobs. Those against, are worried that the jobs and affordable housing are just a ruse. The proposal for the Nets arena and 16 skyscrappers is the biggest to ever hit NYC, but the communtiy and oversite committees have been closed out of the process. Here are some pictures.

Portland, 24.08.2006 09:38

Thousands of protesters calling for Oaxaca Gov. Ulises Ruiz's resignation have occupied the southern city's center, taking over buses, setting up barricades and taking over radio and television stations to broadcast revolutionary messages. A group of masked men Monday fired on a government television station that the protesters have occupied since Aug. 1, injuring one man. Protesters responded by taking over 12 private stations and blocking the city's four main entrances with buses. read the full article...

Celebrating 1st Anniversary of Olympia's Nuclear-Free Zone Ordinance

Portland, 24.08.2006 00:38

A delegation of 24 members of the Japanese Peace Delegation came to last night's Olympia City Council meeting to thank them for taking a stand against weapons of mass annihilation. They were met by a crowd of Olympians who shared their dream of a world free of nuclear arms. Cranes with peace messages surrounded city hall.

The delegation shared their experience, and that of others, with the lasting horrors of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They looked forward to continuing to work with people in the United States to eliminate nuclear weapons to ensure they are never used again. Members of Beyond Hiroshima gave the Delegation strings of peace cranes to thanks the Delagation for their commitment to a nuclear-free world. Individuals from Olympia spoke as well, expressing their gratitude to the Delegation for reminding us how important it is to rid the world of nuclear arms. The former mayor spoke passionately about the risks of nuclear war, saying that the dangers are far greater than those posed by global warming.

Lost Ridge Trail Almost Completed

Portland, 23.08.2006 23:38

On 19/August/2006, the San Gabriel Mountains Trailbuilders returned to the Crystal Lake Recreation area to finish the trail work needed to complete the Lost Ridge Trail, a fairly easy hike where one end of the trail is at Deer Flats and the other meets Lake Road.

Hiking trails are established in these recreation areas in an attempt to concentrate foot traffic (and thus erosion and pollution) along official routes through the mountains while providing some measure of safety for hikers and campers. While the Crystal Lake Recreation area is currently closed and has been since 2002, the area is being worked on by professional, commercial companies and by volunteers such as the San Gabriel Mountains Trailbuilders.

Fresno Video Surveillance Project Gets Final Approval from City Council

San Francisco Bay Area, 23.08.2006 21:08

The Fresno City Council approved the start of a massive police video surveillance project at their Tuesday, August 22 meeting. The last hurdle to approve this project was the acceptance, by the City Council, of a policy manual to regulate the use of the cameras. While much of the policy manual came from The Constitution Project and was protective of civil liberties, there were several key elements of the manual that community members strenuously objected to.

TODAY: Portland Forum Confronts Misuse of Religion in Politics and Provides Practical Solutions

Portland, 23.08.2006 17:38

With congressional races heating up in Oregon and around the country, there is a lot of pressure for candidates to "look more religious," or to "talk more about faith." Meanwhile religious leaders want to help get out the vote, but need help navigating the fine line

between civic participation and partisan political activity.

How can the often divisive use of religion in politics be harnessed instead to promote diversity and strengthen our democracy? The Interfaith Alliance is dedicated to providing the very answers to that question.

The Interfaith Alliance is kicking off it's One Nation, Many Faiths, Vote 2006 program in Portland on August 23, 2006 at The Benson Hotel located at 309 SW Broadway. There will be issue trainings and skills building workshops as well as an evening town hall meeting to teach activists, religious leaders and candidates the skills they need to challenge religious political extremism, encourage civic participation, and promote religious liberty.

Portland Democrats Stifle Speech

Portland, 23.08.2006 16:38

It was round one of the Shame Campaign at 12:30 PM of 8/16/06 on 9th Avenue in Portland. Right in front of the Democrat Party of Oregon Headquarters. It was a self-proclaimed "Democratic Unity Event", and the Democrats were united, all right...against anyone who dares to question their immoral foreign policy decisions regarding Lebanon, Palestine, Iraq and Israel.

I am a 60-year-old 5-ft-4-inch man with a voice. Apparently this is enough to get you assaulted by Democrat goons.

While Earl Blumenauer was speechifying about how wonderful the Democrat Party is and how different they are from Republicans, I began to shout: "Shame on you for Lebanon. Shame on you for Gaza. You're complicit in war crimes." At About this moment, several thugs grabbed me by my arms and demanded that I leave. When I refused to leave, a no-neck skinhead wearing a union shirt threw me to the ground.

Workers Unite Against Mapp

Aotearoa, 23.08.2006 11:41

#media_7618;left##media_7613;centre# Five thousand workers converged on Aotea Square in Auckland today for a noisy rally in opposition of waynne mapps "90 days bill" this bill would have allowed employers to fire new workers at any time in the first 90 days of their employment without any recourse on the employee's part as well as stripping many of the workers rights. The crowd was enthusiastic and responded well to the speakers. Pita Sharples confirmed at the event that the Maori party will not be supporting the bill so it is unlikely that the bill will pass its next reading before the house. Celebrate 175th Anniversary of Nat Turner Slave Rebellion

DC, 23.08.2006 05:09

The Nat Turner Rebellion For seven days each year, beginning on August 21, we celebrate the Nat Turner Rebellion, a vicious slave uprising in Virginia in 1831 when a small army of black women and men, most enslaved but some “free”, rebelled against American bigotry. Gen. Nat Turner and his rebels hoped to organize the black nation and to crush racist slavery in America. This year, during the 175th anniversary of that rebellion, we hope to celebrate for three weeks. Today, it’s basically the same! Freedom fighters from the Black Panther Party and other organizations languish in prison after fighting against racism and injustice from about 1970 to about 1985. Like Nat Turner, these freedom fighters don’t get pardoned; they get prison! We need to liberate them from prison. In D.C. and Baltimore, we must do this for Marshall Eddie Conway and Jack Johnson, two Black Panthers imprisoned since 1970 for their political work in Baltimore. Find out how to help Marshall Eddie Conway and Jack Johnson. FOR INFORMATION, CALL THE NAT TURNER REBELLION: (202) 561-2898.

Violence in Sri Lanka Escalating

San Francisco Bay Area, 23.08.2006 05:08

Ongoing fighting between the Sri Lankan military and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) is creating a humanitarian catastrophe. More than 160,000 people have been displaced since the army launched a military operation on July 26th to seize the Mavilaru irrigation sluice gate inside LTTE territory.

On August 14th, the Sri Lankan air force bombed a school in an LTTE controlled district, killing 61 students and injuring more than 100. Controversy and international concern followed when Sri Lankan Government officials and military generals, openly declared that children were legitamate targets of the Sri Lankan armed forces, regardless of "age or gender" as the Government claimed the victims were all "child soldiers". The Government claims were rejected by the UN and SLMM officials. Unicef and other international bodies condemned the massacre as "shocking".

Violence in Sri Lanka has been escalating since Mahinda Rajapakse won the country's presidency last November. For months, the military and associated paramilitary groups have waged a covert war, aimed at undermining the 2002 ceasefire and provoking the LTTE into responding. Amid the worsening conflict, over fifty-thousand people were displaced between April and July and another 7,439 have fled to the nearby southern Indian of Tamil Nadu.

NYC, 23.08.2006 03:38

A group of more than 20 Jewish protestors staged a “Die-In” during rush hour this morning outside Penn Station, unfurling large banners and lying down on the ground to demand a cessation of continuing Israeli military aggression in Lebanon and Palestine. In a peaceful demonstration, silent protestors created a harrowing scene reflecting the large civilian death toll in Lebanon and the aftermath of war.
